Moeller proves it'~ a +J- ' 1~ legitimate contender 3
Crusaders pound Elder I
By Tom Gamble Post staff reporter
Despite winning eight of their first 11 games, the Moeller baseball team and coaching staff still had something to prove. . "We had to prove to ourselves that we were a good team," said Moeller coach Mike Cameron, · whose team is tied for 11th in the Associated Press state rank· ings. "We've been inconsistent and haven't really put together a complete game." . That is, until Wednesday. Facmg Elder, one of Greater Cincinnati's early-season surprises and the No. 2-ranked tearri in The Post's Division I coaches poll, Moeller parlayed an explosive of· fense, quality pitching and time~ ly defense into an 11-7 victory at Dunham Recreation Complex in Price Hill. The loss, Elder's second straight after opening the season with eight victories, dropped the Panthers to 8-2 overall, 3-2 in the Greater Catholic League South Division. Moeller is 9-3 4-2 in the GCL. ' The performance, said Cameron, was his team's most consistent to date. Moeller had a little of everything: • Hitting: Moeller collected 16 hits, 10 of them for extra bases. Six Crusaders starters had at least two hits, and junior left fielder Paul Blomer had four hits, including a pair of doubles and a home run. "You get a lot more confident after the first hit," said Blomer, whose tworun blast in the sixth helped put the game away. "You become more relaxed Shawn and just go up Brennan there (to the plate) and wait for your pitch."
• Pitching: Cameron got a quality start from senior right-hander Shawn Brennan, a transfer from St. Xavier. Brennan held Elder scoreless through three innings and recorded eight strikeouts before leaving after 5Va innings. After Brennan had allowed the first five hitters to reach base in the sixth, junior left-hander J.D. Heilmann came in to work out of a one-out jam. Heilmann retired all five batters he faced. • Defense: An early-season weakness of the Crusaders, said Cameron, Moeller came up with a number of big defensive plays against Elder. With two on and two out in the fourth, Blomer tracked down a deep line drive by left fielder Kirk Kirkendall to end the inning. First baseman Joe Cameron, known for his defensive skills, came up with three pivotal plays to ensure his team's victory. His biggest play was a diving stab of a line drive off the bat of Jason Poland in the fourth. After Elder catcher Dave Becker had singled to lead off the inning, Poland hit a shot that appeared headed for right field. But Cameron dove, picked off the ball and outraced Becker to the bag to turn a double play. The ne:::::t three Elder batters reached base, but Cameron's play prevented a big inning. "This is our biggest win so far," said Brennan, who improved, his record to 3-1. "We• have played some good teams, but none the caliber of Elder. This will g'tve us confidence. Now we know we can play with the city's best." MOELLER ELDER

Moeller, Elder meet rOrsectiOnal title : ~:. Mike Cameron, Moeller's veteran coach, was cautiously optimistic going into Tuesday's Cincinnati Division I sectional semifinal game against La Salle. After all, the Crusaders fell to the Lancers the past two seasons in the sectional tournament and LaSalle was one of four teams to down Moeller during the regular season. But senior pitcher Shawn Brennan was in complete control, pitching and hitting the Crusaders to a 4-1 victory over La Salle in the Cincinnati Division I Sectional at Blue Ash. Besides driving in one run with a single in the first and scoring another in the third, Brennan went the distance, striking out eight while scattering four hits. In the Cincinnati Division I semifinals at Blue Ash, jason Rusk struck out 11 and yielded a harmless infield single in the sixth inning, leading Elder to a 7-2 victory over the Walnut Hills Matt Kirkendall delivered the key hit for Elder, a two-run double in the first inning. Moeller and Elder will meet for the sectional championship at Blue Ash Thursday. . It will be the third meeting between the Panthers and Moeller. , Shawn Brennan, who helped Moeller get Division I district The Crusaders won both, 12-7 and semifinals, is one reason the Crusaders have a 10-game win streak. 3-2. In the Oxford Division I section¡rournament schedules al semifinals, Brian Wilhelm's three-run home run in the fifth inning sparked the Hamilton Big Blue to a 6-1 victory over the Harrison Wildcats at Fairfield. Brlan Estridge pitched a complete game for Hamilton, limiting the Wildcats to four hits. ¡ "We went into the game with two 2oals," Hamilton coach Dan Bowling said. "The first was to beat Harrison and the second was not to use pitcher Ricky Stone. We accomplished both." If someone would have told Moeller coach Mike Cameron three months ago that his team would be district champions this season with a chance to win a state title, he probably would have dismissed the thought very quickly. Well, on Thursday afternoon the Crusaders accomplished their first step on the way up the state ladder by knocking off arch-rival Elder 3-2 to win their third -ever district championship, and first since 1989 when they won the state title. Coach Cameron said, "No one gave us much of a chance In the pre-season. We were picked to finish last in the GCL, which with the number of starters we . had coming back (four) that was a fair pick. I did know that we had a group of players who would work very hard to prove people wrong. because they are great competitors." Competitors the Crusaders definitely are. Take junior pitcher J.D. Heilmann for instance. His third pitch of the game was crushed by Elder's Dave Becker over the 383 sign in center field. Heilmann said, "I made a mistake to Becker plain and simple. But, I also knew it was a seven inning game, and I had to keep my composure and not let Elder score any more runs." While the crafty left-bander did allow one more run In the fourth inning, his array of offspeed pitches had the Panthers totally baffled for most of the game. Following Becker's home run, Hellmann quickly retired the next two batters, and the first three of the second inning. Moeller's offense tied the game up in the bottom of the second inning, 路When Shawn Brennan sliced a triple down the right field line to lead off the inning. Joe Cameron then brought him home with a sharp single to right to tie things up. The top of third inning saw the Panthers open the inning with a single. A sacrifice bunt moved the runner to second, but on the
Crusaders had left third base un-covered, so the Elder runner took a shot at taking the base, but shortstop Dan Feichtner raced to the bag and took a路 perfect throw from first baseman Mike Bell for the out. Heilmann then evened up the score with Becker when he struck him. out on a nasty curve ball to end the inning. The Crusaders took advantage of the momentum swing irt,the bottom of the third. Jeff Raussen- doubled off the ~e~ ter fielcl, wall to open the mnmg. An intended sacrifice bunt by Kevin Hughes proved to be so good that it rolled past the charging Elder pitcher for a base hit moving Raussen to third. ' Bell brought Raussen home when a he hit a rocket to third base that the Elder third sacker couldn't handle. Brennan was next up and he was walked to load the bases with no outs. A fielder's choice out at home plate brought up junior Paul Blomer who produced a sacrifice fly to right field that scored Bell to give Moeller a 3-1 lead. The Panthers got one of the runs back In the top of the fourth when following a nice play on a chopper over the mound by Feichtner for the first out, the next batter doubled down the left field line. A bloop single moved the runner up to third, and he scored on a sacrifice fly to center field. The Panthers' next big chance to tie the game came in the top of the sixth Inning. Becker led off with a walk. and advanced to second on a passed ball. The second batter flew out harmlessly to centerfield for the frrst out. The next batter hit a ground ball to Feichtner at shortstop. When Felchtner came up to throw, Becker was standing right in front of him In "noman's land". Feichtner made an easy toss to Joe Bianchini at second base for the big second out. , Heilmann then recorded the inning's final out on a ground ball to Cameron at third. Moeller made an attempt to
add a run In the bottom of the. sixth when Brad Hronek pinch hit with a two-out base hit. Bianchini hit a sinking line drive to center that took a a sliding catch to record the out and end the threat. The Panthers did not go down quietly in the seventh. Pinch hitter Matt Kirkendall led off with a single. and reached second on a sacrifice bunt. Lightning struck the Panthers twice on the next play when Nick Englnger hit a one-hop ground ball to Feichtner at short, and wouldn't you know it Kirkendall was standing right in fn;mt of Feichtner in a replay of the sixth inning. Feichtner once again made an easy toss to Bianchini for. the second out. It was only fitting that the final out be a ground ball to Feichtner that he tossed to Bell to start the wild celebration behind the pitcher's mound. Cameron said, "I was really proud of Dan Feichtner. He had a rough game against LaSalle with three errors, but he came back and made some great plays in this game. I also have to give credit to our assistant coaches. They convinced me to go with J.D. His competitive edge and junk really kept them off balance." The win advances Moeller to the regional tournament at Wright State University Friday afternoon at 4:30 p.m. against Beavercreek. The Crusaders had advanced to the district championship game by knocking off LaSalle 41 on Tuesday. The Crusaders rode the strong arm and bat of Brennan to the win. The senior struck out eight Lancers and provided two hits to the cause. 路 Adding two hits as well were Bell and Raussen. Moeller now stands 22-4 on the season. R~ggie Sanders, annointed by manager Lou Piniella to be next year's center fielder for the •Reds, was in Cincinnati Friday for a baseball card show at Moeller·High School. With Eric Davis being traded to Los Angeles this week, Sanders is in the Reds' sp'Otlight. But he isn:t exactly set for lifE;l. · For example, there's this problem about his uniform number. When he came up with the Reds last August, he wore No. 53. How about a new number? Like 44, the one Davis wore as the Reds' regular center fielder? "I don't know," Sanders said sheepishly. "I wouldn't take it unless it's all right with Eric. I'd have to ask him about it. I -love

Fairfield trounced Clayton Northmont, 12-2, Saturday in what coach Gary Yeatts called the "best performance of the year" by his team. The Indians played solid fundamental baseball as they executed the hit-and-run, hit well-placed grounders and line drives and laid down a successful suicide squeeze bunt. "They're not going to beat themselves," Cameron said. "They do the little things right, and usually that's the difference in the ball game." It was the difference April 23, when
the Indians beat the Crusaders, 8-6. "For us to win, we can't give them runs which we did in the last game, which means playing a fundamentally sound defense," Cameron said. Junior left-hander ].D. DAYTON, Ohio - It was a game of redemption Sunday for Moeller shortstop Dan Feichtner. In the first two innings of the Division I regional semifinal against Beavercreek, the junior had committed his team's only two errors. Th~y resulted in two Beaver runs. "I didn't play very good defense today," Feichtner admitted. Understatement. "Fortunately I was able to hit a little," he added. Big understatement. Feichtner went 2-for-3 with three RBI and two steals to lead the Crusaders to an 8-4 victory in front of about 500 partisan fans at Wright State l)piversity. A self-proclaimed fast-ball hitter, Fcichtner (.295) said Beavercreek fastballer Steve Martin was "throwing what I wanted to see." "We went into the game thinking that maybe we could get a couple of his fastballs," Feichtner said. "He threw me a lot of stuff outside and I was able to drive one to right field." Beavercreek coach Rick Wolfe, who suffered his second defeat in three years in the regional ..semifinals, was disappointed in the loss, but applauded his team's performance this yeac "It's hard to take right now, but in three days I'll look back on the season and smile," Wolfe said. Wolfe's team faced both Moeller and Fairfield this year. He said today's game may be decided by the bullpe'ns, Beavercreek (15-8) lost a 3-1 decision to Fairfield. "Both teams impress me, but I think Fairfield has the advantage because they've had a couple of days to rest their pitchers," Wolfe said, "and that could be the difference." J.D. Heilmann paced behind the Crosley Field pitchers mound, trying to regain his composure. Rattled by a towering 400-foot home run by Elder catcher Dave Becker on the third pitch of the game, the Moeller left-hander wondered if Thursday would be his day. "I made a mistake and got the fastball out over the plate," said Heilmann, a junior. "It kind of shook me up and I knew that I had to get it out of my mind or I was in trouble." He succeeded. Mter the blast, Heilmann was outstanding, scattering five hits as the Crusaders pulled out a 3-2 victory over the Panthers in the Cincinnati Division I sectional championship game at Blue Ash.
