Woodward rally Shooting star shines as 'Dogs nip Moeller By Tom Gamble Post staff reporter

Even when Damon Flint is not shooting well, Woodward High School basketball coach Jim Leon tells him to keep firing away. Sooner or later, Leon figures the 6-foot-5, 190pound junior guard will settle down and find the range. Friday, that's exactly what Flint did. After hitting just two of 12 field-goal attempts in the first half, Flint came alive down the stretch and dominated the final five minutes- scoring Woodward's last 13 points to lead the Bulldogs to a 58-57 victory against No. 2-seed .Moeller in the upperbracket final of the Cincinnati Division I sectional at Shoemaker Center. ¡ Flint, with Indiana's Bob Knight and Ohio State's Randy Ayers among the college coaches watching, finished with a game-high 27 points and six three-point goals. He has scored 71 points in Woodward's three post-season games. Woodward (18-5), unbeaten since a mid-season loss to Taft, advances to meet Oxford sectional champion Lakota (19-4) in the district final Saturday, March 14, at noon at University of. Dayton Arena. Moeller (18-5) had its 11-game winning streak snapped, but ended the season by winning 16 of 19

games. "I tell Damon not to stop shooting," said Leon. "He's that good, and he has to maintain his confidence. Damon's always telling me, 'Coach, I'm the money. I'm the money man.' So, I told him to go ahead and get it done.'' Flint did. With Woodward trailing, 55-53, Leon called for a play designed to free Flint for a three-pointer. Flint, who scored 21 points in the second half, came off a pick and nailed the long-range shot from the right corner to put the Bulldogs ahead, 56-55, with 1:02 remaining. Moeller, which had trailed by as many as nine points in the second quarter before rallying to take a three-point halftime lead, regained the lead, 57-56, on a field goal by senior Chris Green with 42 seconds left. But, after a Woodward time out, Moeller senior guard John Harpring fouled Flint with 25 seconds left. Flint calmly sank both free throws to put Woodward back in front, 58-57. Moeller, however, still had a chance to win. Harpring, attempting to direct the offense, was stripped of the ball by a Woodward defender. Moel¡ ler senior Dan Maehlman retrieved the ball, but couldn't connect on a potential game-winning shot with three seconds remaining. Flint grabbed the rebound as time expired. "Our record was 6-5 when I decided to sit down and talk with Damon," said Leon. "I think he was feeling a lot of pressure. I said, 'Damon, you don't Please see BULLDOGS, 2B

Flint soars, carries Woodward over

Moeller, 58-57 which included Indiana coach Bob Knight and Ohi:J State coach Randy Ayers, who apparently were doing a little window shopping. "This was better than beating a Withrow or an Aiken," said Flint, who also connected on six threepoint field goals. "This game really means a lot to me. Everybody thought we didn't have a chance just because they were seeded third." The 18-5 Bulldogs, now winners of 12 straight, meet Lakota in the Division I district finals next Saturday at University of Dayton Arena. Flint overcame a sluggish first half before assuming command. point-forward position. He also led the Crusaders in assists w~h 73 for the year. While the Sycamore Aves did not have the season they had hoped for in a tough Greater Miami Conference, Eddie Ball was able to post some nice numbers. , The senior forward led the Aves in scoring wtih 11 points per game while usually guarding the other team's best player. Innis was also a bright spot for the Indian Hill Braves. The junior · guard led the area in scoring at 20 poi;rts a game. On the girls side of the floor, Country Day's Mary LaMacchia closed out a nice career by leading the Indians to the district championship game. The senior guard scored 17 points a game this year to finish her career with 1,343 points. She also is the career assist record-holder for the Indians with 504 for her career. Madeira's Diana Boehnlein was another player who ended her career on a good note. The 6-3 center averaged 21 points and 13 rebounds per game to give her career totals of 1,280 points and 1,098 rebounds which are both school records. Indian Hill junior Pam Purcell was definitely a big factor in the Lady Braves' season. The junior center averaged 14 points and 11 rebounds to easily lead Indian Hill in those categories. The Sycamore Lady Aves had one of their most memorable seasons in memory with a district title, and two big reasons for this were the play of juniors Amy Scalcucci and Alison Cohen. Scalcucci led the Lady Aves with 12 points and six rebounds a game, while shooting an outstanding 76 percent from the free throw line. Cohen was nam~d to the first team AII-GMC after averaging 10

points and six rebounds for the year. No player can have a successful season without the guidance of a good coach. This area is fortunate to have an abundance of outstanding coaches, but there are two whose leadership abilities really stood out. Country Day's HoY{ard Brownstein overcame a tough schedule (and late start because of the football team's playoff success) in leading the Indians to a 24-2 record and the school's first regional championship. Brownstein's ability to mesh his players into a cohesive unit that accePted their roles and played with great intensity was one of the ma'1n keys-4o this year's team. Brownstein is the boys Coach of the Year. Basketball is a team sport, and no team in the area displayed this better than the Sycamore Lady Aves, under the direction of coach Steve Imhoff. The Lady Aves were definitely a fun group to watch play. This group of girls did not know the meaning of the word quit. They battled hard until the final buzzer. Their achievements are a direct result of the guidance and commitment that Imhoff portrays to his team. Winning the district title aga'1nst tough odds is a great testimonial to all the hard work and efforts that Imhoff and his team put in over the past year. My hat goes off to Imhoff and the Lady Aves by naming Imhoff coach of the year! Members of the All-Area second team included: (Boys): John Harpring and Chris Green of Moeller, Jamal King of CCD, Brian nus of Sycamore, and Ed Hausgen of Madeira.

The Moeller Crusaders spent the first week of Christmas break· playing In the Sidney Holiday Tournament. Things went well for the Crusaders as they captured the tournament title with wins over Dayton Stebbins 71-48 and Sidney Lehman 83-48. Moeller got rolling early In their game with Stebbins on Thursday as they ran out to a 19-7 first quarter lead. Sophomore center Bobby Brannen keyed the activity with eight points for the quarter along with a stifling defense. The Crusaders took an early 14-0 lead behind the play of Brannen, and a pair of threepointers by Dan Maehlman and Mike Bell. · Stebbins settled down ·m the second quarter and crawled back Into the contest. Stebbins hit the quarter's first two baskets before Joe Pletrek answered with an offensive stick-back for the Crusaders. Bell then countered three points by Stebbins with another three-pointer. Following two John Harprtng free throws. Stebbins scored seven points, but Bran, nen cooled them off with a basket. ! The quarter came to a close when Pietrek scored off an offensive rebound to make the score 31-22 at halftime. Stebbins made a quick run at the Crusaders to start the third quarter cutting the lead to 3731, but Pie trek's conventional three-point play quieted Stebbins.

They are very quick. but we handled their pressure early In the game to neutralize their quickness." · The Crusaders received the same effort In the championship game Friday night against Sidney Lehman. The Crusaders got things going early racing out to a 22-14 first quarter lead. The game got away from the Cavaliers In the second quarter. as Moeller pushed the lead 4 7-23 behind some fine defensive work and sharp shooting. The second half saw the Crusaders put things on cruise control with frequent substitutions to roll to the 37-polnt victory. · Kremer said. "It was good to get Mike Bell back Into the flow of things. He really shot the ball well and played solid defense." "We now have to get back to work. This Is the start of a bl_g stretch of games coming up for us. How we do in these next four games (St. X. Dayton Wayne, Elder. Chamlnade) will be key for our season." Bell led a balanced Crusader scoring attack with 15 points. Chris Green was next with 13 points while Harprtng and Brannen contributed 11 and 10 points respectively. In addition, ·Bell was named the tournament's most valuable

player for his performance. also joined him on the All-Tournament team. Moeller Improves to 5-2 on the season. They will have a busy weekend coming up as they will entertain league-rival St. Kavler Fpday, and powerful Dayton Wayne on Saturday. Br~en

Frontline~ • raises Moeller sights By Joe Minster J ff.' Press Contributor ~'

Things definitely are looking up in basketball at Moeller High School. A tall front line that averages almost 6 feet, 6 inches, could help the Crusaders reverse a 6-14 1990-1991 season that included a last-place 1-9 finish in the Greater Cincinnati League. "We play a tough schedule," pointed out coach Carl Kremer, "but I'm optimistic because we have a physical club with decent size and quite a bit of experience." Three reasons for Kremer's optimism are two returning forwards, 6-6, 225-pound Dan Maehlman and 6-5 Chris Green, along with a talented 6-6 sophomore center, Bobby Brannen, up from the freshman team. Maehlman, second-team member All-GCL, averaged 16 points and 10 rebounds last season while shooting 85 percent from the foul line. Green averaged 11 points and six rebounds for Moeller and Brannen, a 195-pounder, compiled a 17-point mark for the frosh cagers. ·Rounding out the senior contingent are ~1 John Harpring, 6-1 Jason Brown and 6-2 Jeremy Staun. · Harpring·, a · transfer from Marist High in Atlanta who was a cornerback on the Crusader football team, is a candidate for the point guard position vacated by the graduated Mark Simmons, now playing for Kenyon College. Brown, wide receiver for the Crusaders, is out indefinitely with a shoulder injury. !"Topping the junior group is 6-2 Mike Bell, son of former Cincin~ nati Red Buddy Bell, who averaged eight points as a sopl)omore. other juniors are 5-9 J.D. Heilman, a point guard; 5-9 guard Joe Schimpfj big Joe Pietrek, 6-4 245-pound center; 6-4 forward Eric Kappler and 6-1 Please see MOELLER,
