By Joe Bruening The Crusader roundballers went up against a much-improved Elder club last Monday but unlike :their previous meeting Moe could not topple th~ Panthers.

The contest saw Moeller struggle against a wellrounded Panther squad and at the half, the Crusaders were down 3726. From this point on, the Crusaders and Panthers traded baskets, with Moeller not being able to. cut down the deficit. The final score was Moe-45, Elder-58. · Center Tim Jolley did well on both ends of the court, snaring 13 rebo~nds and scoring 10 pomts. Greg Fritz was the high point man, notching 11, while Ron Askin had eight, and Steve Apke and Bob Hill had six points ft .....

Moeller's basketball team finished the regular season with a 9-11 record and will play Hughes in the sectional tournament.

The Crusader swimmers entered the sectional tournament last Wednesday at Sycamore and looked just as impressive as they did during the regular season. By Joe Bruening The Crusader hoopsters entered post-season tournament action with a bang as they out-gunned Hughes by a score of89-77.

Moe took the early lead of 2-0 and never looked back enroute to its tenth victory of the year. Hughes closed Moe's lead to one bucket on two occasions in the second half, but the Crusaders showed a little fl~ue of their own, putting 21 points on the board in the ·final quarter, which eaded Hughes' season afnuptly. ;sophomore guard on Larkin topped his vious 29-point game by ring 33 to lead all rers. Following closely behind, Greg Fritz netted 26 points for the Crusaders, and center Tim Jolley hauled down 14 reh.ounds and a like number of points.

turned in one of his more memorable days, breaking the school record in the 200 Free, placing seventh in the 100 Free with a personal best-ever time, and swimming his quickest split this year in the 400 Free Relay. Scott Barlow swam to a 7th place in the 200 I.M. and a 6th in the 100 Back, and finally Paul Franer took 5th in the 100 Back.

Moe's swimmers will compete during the weekend of Mar. 5-6 at the state meet in Canton, and all are hopeful of finishing in the top five as a team, thereby fulfilling their final season goal.

Post-season action turned out to be not quite as victorious for Coach John Yost''S wrestlers as they grabbed a ninth ' place io the sectional tourney. Three Crusade'rs did excel in the competition and advanced to the districts to be held next weekend at the Dayton Hara Arena. Wrestling at 119 lb.s Mike Melink finished third, and Matt Macke (167) did likewise.

Eric Clark (142) ended up fourth, while Joe Hossenlopp (98) was selected as an alternate to the ·competition.

The score was 21-8 early in the first quarter, and it 路looked like the Anderson Redskins were on their .way to the districts with an easy win over Moeller.

But the coaches and players knew they didn't want to end an up-and' down season on such a sour note. With a little bit of luck and a lot of gutsy play by all, the Crusaders came back strong, and when the buzzer sounded, Moe "upset" the topranked Anderson 61-57.

That early 13-point lead of Anderson's was their largest ofthg contest, and even that didn't last long.

Moe pulled to within a point at the half and was only down a bucket with eight minutes to go. In that last quarter, the Crpsaders played as well as they ever did, putting steady pressure 路on And~rson which resulted in two of the staring five to foul out. Combined with some convenient technicals on the Redskins and clutch shooting by Greg Fritz, Byron Larkin, and Steve Apke, Moe was able to take the lead with two minutes remaining and proceed to earn their 12th

CURRENT EVENTS A. BASKETBALL: The Varsity may be the best 4-5 team in the city. The Crusaders retained the Ol'Oaken Bucket by downing Sycamore 64-55. The win was costly though, as top rebounder Tim Jolley went out with a sprained ankle. He may miss a total of 5 games.

The team then lost to LaSalle 56-43 even though the game was tied 35-35 with 4 minutes to play. The next night brought perhaps Moeller's best showing of the year in an exciting 59-58 loss to Kettering Alter - the states second ranked team. Senior Bob Hill led the way with a strong 20 points and 13 rebounds. For the year, Sr. Co-Captain Greg Fritz continues to lead the team with a 14 ppg average. Next games include Purcell, Walnut Hills, Roger Bacon and Princeton. The Reserve Team is having a fine season with a 7-2 record - both losses coming in overtime. If they can overcome injury problems, the season looks bright for them. The Freshmen .led by Coaches Dave Kaple and Jim Fay have run up an 8-1 record. They have a long way to go but the team is working hard and having fun. On a happy note, John "Juice" Gruber has recovered from his appendectomy and is back with his team.

B. WRESTING: The Varsity turned in a fine. performance at the Indian Hill Tournament (Jan. 8,9). They finished second to a strong Roger Bacon team (152 to 150 pts.).

The Crusader's weren't beaten until the last match of the meet. Moeller sat third going into the consolation finals but 7 of 8 wrestlers won 3rd place,· ·boosting Moeller into 1st place. Moeller's top finishers were: 2nd Mike Melink; 3rd Joe Hossenlopp, Paul Hossenlopp. Rob Hoekzema, Eric Clark, Joe Magliano, Matt Macke and Dusty Stoy; 4th Clay Parker. The next matches will be against Milford and Sycamore. The Reserves record stands at 4-1 with wins over Bethel Tate 29-12, Scott 29-15 and a big win over Elder at Elder 37-33. The reserves have worked very hard and the season looks good for them if they keep it up. The Freshmen are trying to overcome a lack of wrestlers which has caused several forfeits in various weight classes. When they were able to put a full team on the mat, they came up with a win against Purcell 38-33. A loss to Elder followed 45-23 but it appears they will have a complete team for their final four matches.

C. SWIMMING: The swim team has started strong posting a 3-0 dual meet record. In the 9-team Mariemont Invitational, the Crusaders placed 2nd in a field comprised of all the top schools except St. X. The Swimming Honor Roll is made up of several Moeller swimmers. 200 m relay - 1st; Scott Barlow - 4th in 200 IM & 100 BK; Paul Fraher - 1st in 100 BK, 2nd in 50 FR; Ed Anderson - 1st in 50 FR & 100 FR, 2nd in 100 BR; Ed has already qualified for All-American consideration in the 50 FR with a 21.78 time.

IMPORTANT EVENTS A. The Boosters are having a SO's Dance on February 20th, 9:00- 1:00 am in the school's gymnasium. Admission is $15.00 per couple. MC is the Music Professor- WLW's Jim LaBarbara. Tickets can be obtained through the Athletic Department.

B. Ad Drive Dates: CAPTAINS MEETING - February 17; WORKER-CAPTAIN MEETING- March 10; Final turn in - April 21.

GENERAL After five years as "Meat Sales Director" Mrs.Koegel has asked that by the end of this school year we find a replacement for her. Saturday against Mariemont.

The meet, won by Moe 97-74, was an organized team effort highlighted by exceptional individual times from a number of Crusaders. Junior Matt Foley churned out three personal best times including a school record in the 200 Free and a :49.4 split on the first-place 400 Free Relay (Foley, Ralph Moher, Greg Dyson, l)ave Bidwell). In the 200 IM, Scott Barlow set a school record and turned in a personal best in the 100 Back. Also swimming individual fastest times were Jeff Siekman CWO IM, 100 Breast) and Greg Dyson (200 Free). Additionally, the Crusader men of the high boards, Jim Judd, Steve Eddingfield, and Steve Vollmecke, grabbed 1-3 in the diving segment. Last, but not least, underclassmen Steve Stiles and Larry Dolan stroked at the top of their forms in the Butterfly.

On Saturday, the Crusaders will match wits· in an important quadran~ular meet featuring St. Xavier, Sycamore. and Roger Bacon. The meet starts at 7 p,m. at Keating Natatorium and should be a showcase of local talent.

All are encouraged to attend.

First the good news. Moe's ··determined swimmers ·racked upthehighesttotal -"t>oints ever in the G.C.L. championships, exclud. ing one other team. One of the goals of Coach Dick Beerman's state-bound squad was to ···accumulate the highest total, not including ·powerhouse St. X., which they did, and additionally ·they broke three league· ·records i~ the process. process. · Moe's seemingly unbeatable 200 Medley Relay ' 'of Paul Franer, Scott Barlow, Ralph Moher, and Ed Anderson were at their ·best as they clocked a new league mark of 1:39.37.

Individually, Anderson had his "usual" banner · day, setting league records in boththe50and100Free.

Senior Paul Franer earned a first in the 100 Back to round out Moe's first placers.

As in all the previous meets, though, ifitweren't for those third and fourth places and personal sacrifice and commitments ofotherindividuals, such frequent team victories would be impossible.

Senior Scott Barlow swam to a third place in the 100 Back in addition to his personal best time, and

While the swimmers played up to and even surpassedexpectations, the hoopsters of the hardcourt fell below par and dropped two contests despite the home court advantage. /' ·,./On Tuesday, Mae hosted the McNicholaS Rockets who tenaciously shot down the Crusaders in the finalmomentsofplay.The Rockets led from the outset and at one time held a 12point margin over Moe in the third quarter. Moeller ·rebounded late in the contest, going up for the first and last time 65-54 with one minute remaining. During the final ticks of the clock, McNick got the better half as they connected on a half-dozen free throws to doom the Crysaders 70-67.

Friday's match-up against the LaSalle Lancers prov.ed to be even worse for B1g Moe. The Crusaders' two-point deficit in the initial period grew and grew as the Lancers outjumped Moeller off the boards and then provided a steady offensive attack. In the 79-57 defeat, Greg Fritz scored 17 points, and Steve Apke connected for 15. Others scoring were Steve Spatz9, Bob Hill and John Bruening f'>-apiece,'and Tim Jolley and Rob Heintzman, 2 points each.

Sectional competition starts next week at Norwood against Hughes.

The Crusader Grapplers also clashed in the G.C.L. tournament last week, but they couldn't put it all together amidst stiff competition from St. X., Purcell, Roger Bacon, and Elder.

Even though Coach John Yost's squad finished at the bottom in standings, commendable individual matches were turned_ in by Joe Hossenlopp (98), Mike Melink (119), and Dusty Stoy ( Hvy.), who all were runners-up in their divisions. Matt Macke (167) finished third, while Rob Hoekzema (145) and Jim Morrison(126)eachplaced fourth--

The Crusaders hosted McNicholas Feb. 9 and will play LaSalle on Feb. 12 and then Elder the following Monday.

Moeller's swim team has nearly concluded its regular season with the last meet being at Sycamore on Friday Feb. 12. Over the past week, the Crusaders competed in two dual meets-one against Walnut Hills and the other against the state's Ill-ranked team,
