Women's Results The 1997 State Meet produced many thrills and memorable stories. The Mogadore Field boys and girls became the first school to win two championships in the same meet. Coach Bill Huntington did an outstanding job, winning twice in one day, most coaches only dream of doing this once! His girls ranked second behind powerhouse . Beaumont, but when senior Liz Fauret of Beaumont dropped out due to an asthma attack, the door was open for Field. The Field boys came from a 19th ranking in the final coaches poll to number one on race day! The closest any team came to a double, prior to this year, was 1982 when the "AA'' Bellevue boys were second and the "AAA" Bellevue girls were State Champions! Division III also had a first for the state meet. Attica Seneca East produced both boys and girls team runner-ups.

Division I-Girls: Colerain proved why they were number one all year and fourth in the nation. The Cardinals put five in the top twenty to destroy the field with fifty-six points! Coach Ron Russo ran on the 1978 team that gave Colerain its first boys state title and now has coached the girls team to its first State Championship. Senior Jen Wollam of Alliance won her second title in a row with a 18:02.5 despite going twenty-five yards off course. She then provided a thrilling finish by catching Oregon Clay's, Katie Sekinger, who ran 18:04 for second place. Centerville's junior star Kristen Jumer was third in 18: I 9, to make her the·favorite for next year.

Dhision II Girls: Mogadore Field won its title behind sophomore Emily Mars fourth place, over-all finish with an 18:44. Junior Heather Patch was thirty-fourth in 19:53 and sophomore Kathy Shell thirty-fifth in 19:53, also for Field. Senior Kelli Litten won in 18:35 to 18:37 for Beaumont's Vonnie Downing. Litten is from Canal Fulton. Salem finished third behind three sophomores and two juniors with Mary Baumon leading the pack with eighteenth in 19:34. Beaumont should be strong again next year. Sophomore Lindsay Nemastil was !12th after finishing seventh in 1996. Nemastil didn't complete a race from September fifth until Districts, due to a sciatic nerve problem.

Division III Girls: Liberty Benton's, Carrie Smith, finished second for the second year in a row and Madeira's Amanda Blackwelder made it three in a row in third place. Smith, the junior, gets another chance. Blackwelder, a senior, will not. Seneca East's Briana Shook, a junior, will be back to defend her title after the meets fastest time of 18:01.4. Shook was fourth in 1996 with 18:39 and runner-up in 1995 in Division I while at Columbian. Barnesville came from ~n eleventh place finish in 1996 to the top of the awards stand in 1997! Freshman Jennie Castle set the pace in eighth place with a 19:20, and her four teammates were in by 20:17! The good news for Coach Mark Brown is that he has his top seven back for 1998. Third place finisher Elmore Woodmore, led by three freshmen and Amanda-Clearcreek, with its top five returning, should be contenders.
