Caravan rol!s over Cn-asaderrs Moeller should reclaim crown Moeller, dominant for better than two decades in the GCL, is picked by the league's coaches to succeed Elder and reassume the. top spot in 1990. Moeller appears to ha \'C the right components for a GCL title: a dangerous running back in Carlos Collins, good size, and a desire to achieve after losing in the state title game a Yl'ar ago. Elder lost more to graduation than Moeller, and is picked second by the coaches. St. Xavier has good size, but question marks on defense; La Salle has a new stadium and a team with po-
tcntial, while Roger Bacon may have a hard time making up ground over the rest of the k·ague. PREDICTED FINISH 1. MOELLER 2. ELDER 3. ST. XAVIER 4. LA SALLE 5. ROGER BACON • Defending champion: Elder (10-1, 4-0 GCL). • Games to watch: St. Xavier at Elder, Sept. 21; St. Xavier at Moeller. Sept. 28: Elder at Moeller, Oct. 5. • Player to watch: Elder defensive tackle Mike Stallmeyer, at 6-foot-4, 240 pounds, should be a force. He is a highly regarded recruit, with Notre Dame among the pursuers.

POTPOURRI OF MOELLER SPORTS Coach Tom Kennedy, the Head Coach of the LaCross Program, was honored by his peers as the Ohio High School Coach of the Year. 1990 graduates Adam Hyzdu and David Bell inked professional baseball contracts shortly after they graduated. Adam was the 16th player selected overall in the draft. He signed with the San Francisco Giants organization and played Class A ball out in Everett, Washington. His final numbers came to be quite respectable at season's end, particularly in the power categories. Dave signed with the Cleveland Indians. He spent about six weeks in a Rookie League. While there, he put up some very impressive numbers. After that he moved in Class A, but he had the misfortune of sustaining a broken hand which sidelined him.

Brad Hindersman is busy with fall baseball down at the University of Kentucky. Mike Beerman '90 saw quite a bit of action in Wittenberg University's season opener. He has also been told he'll be on the Tiger's traveling squad. Te~tes Jeff Crable and Chris Asbrock are busy in the Mid-American Conference football wars over at Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana.
Scott Schaffner, after enjoying a 2-year starting role for the Minnesota 'Golden Gophers' is in a heated battle for his job at QB in 1990.

Reserves Review It could be called one of the greatest comebacks in Moeller Reserve Football history. Mt. Healthy dominated the game for almost 3 full quarters, but it's wasn't enough as they came up short 21-19. Mr. Healthy was winning 13-0 at halftime on Moeller turnovers and a few mistakes on defense. In the 3rd quarter, we still couldn't turn it around. Then Tom Zinkan scored on a 12-yard run to make the score now 19-7. Mt. Healthy thought they were in the driver's seat. We really got pumped on a spectaclar aerial grab by Brad. Hronek. He literally .. flipped .. in the air. Then with about 4 minutes left in the 4th quarter, J. B. Lind hit Jim Kennedy on a 20-yard touchdown pass to make it 19-14. Mt. Healthy got the ball with 2 minutes left, the defense held them on 3 plays. Mt. Healthy lined up to punt and the punter kicked it into his own man's back. Chad Nahrup then picked the ball up and ran for a touchdown. This great victory improved our record to 3-0. Outstanding performances were turned in by the whole team in the 4th quarter and especially Chad Nahrup for the game's winning touchdown. Our next game is against PurcellMarian. By J. B. Lind

CRUSADER CROSS COUNTRY The 1990 Crusader Cross Country team has the potential to be one of Moeller's best teams. The team gave up two individuals to graduation but has a very strong varsity team returning. This year's varsity squad will be led by senior Captains Mike Brewer and Matt Holland. Mike and Matt will provide the leadership and backbone for this year's team with their strength and determination. Senior Mike Brewer returns from an outstanding past season in both Cross Country and Track and is expected to do well this year as he sets his sights for a repeat appearance at State competition. SeniorMattHollandhasalso been working hard and will significantly strengthen the varsity squad in
its bid for the GCL Championship. Juniors Doug Kohls and Ryan Lutz plus sophomores Ben Callahan and Robby Trapp will round off the Varsity squad and are expected to do well. One position still remains open on .the varsity squad and competition for this spot is expected to be great as the remaining teammates strive to achieve a position on this year's potential State contender. This year's team will be coached by TimErdmannandRickGemereth. Both are active and competitive runners with years of experience behind them in distance running. With all things set in placeand the hard workanddedication of this year's team, the coaches are optimistic that this year's Cross Country Team will be Moeller's best yet!

THE DRIVE First and foremost, it ~ust be understood. There would not have been any drive without the outstanding effort by the Moeller defense which held Massillon on a fourth and less than a yard on the Moeller 22-yard line. Jason Knecht made a tremendous play and Sean Flynn helped him finish it off as they stuffed the Tiger back. Then, with 1:23 remaining in the game and trailing 23-17, the Moeller offense had its chance. But it needed to go 78 yards to paydirt, a field goal would not help. Down &

We've made the trip to the Tiger's den twice now and the collective opinion of the entire Moeller contingent - coaches, administrators, players, fans is unanimous. It is the of an athlete's experience and the Massillon lifetime community is a first-class group of folks. They know their football and they are very generous in their towards remarks and courtesy their opponent. If you ever get the opportunity - especially those who love high school football, you've got to attend a game at "Pau 1 Brown - Tiger Stadi urn".
Vada Murray '86 calls the alignments for the Michigan Wolverines defensive secondary. An interception against the Fighting Irish in the season opener adds to his already impressive career total. Vada hopes to completes his degree work at Ann Arbor by December. Ken Griffey, Jr. '87 has posted some outstanding numbers for the Seattle Mariners in this 1990 campaign- .298 average, 170 hits, 21 HR, 85 runs, 71 RBis. Since being joined with his dad, Ken, Sr., for the final months of the season, he seems to be rejuvenated after a somewhat 'flat' stretch in August. '90 - After a Dave Bell brief time back home, has returned to Florida for a six week stint in winter ball.
CRUSADERS IN ACTION PAST & PRESENT Brian Willism '86 and Ray Hilvert '86 were both in the thick of the Ohio State vs Boston College action in Boston last Saturday. Both young men are in their final year for the Eagles while working on their graduate degrees. Ray, an Eagle captain, is pursuing a Master's degree in Business. Brian's graduate work is in communications. Trevor Ryals '86 is anchoring the offensive line of the 11th ranking 3-0 Virginia Cavaliers at offensive center.
Scott Egbers, Scott Gregory and Tim Morrissey, all of the class of 1988, are gearing up for their Junior year of action for the Wright State University Swim Team. All three have been instrumental in the Raider's success the past two years. Moeller Senior Mike Brewer has led the Crusader Cross Country Team to a fifth place city ranking. So far in the 1990 season, Mike has won first place in every major invitational in which the Crusaders have participated. This past weekend's performance came in the high competitive Mt. Healthy Invitational in which the team posted its best every finish, 3rd place.

CRUSADER SOCCER TEAM
CRUSADER SOCCER The 1990 edition of Moeller Soccer could well be the most talented team in the school's history. Last year the Crusaders finished 7-8-4 and third place in the GCL. Although four key players have graduated, the team will return nine players who started on a regular basis in 1989. Tri-captains Scott Schawper, Doug Culler and Matt Clark should provide leadership and ability for an experienced 1990 squad. Schaeper, an All-State Midfielder returns to help direct the attack and anchor what should be a strong defense for the coming season. Culler was AllConference in 1989 as a defender but will probably be moved into the midfield to help provide some offensive punch. Clark returns to help anchor the defense that has only allowed one goal a game average the past two years. Also returning will be seniors
Joe Goodall, Jeff Leinberger, John Ferguson and Juniors John Santoro, Tyler Rotte, and Kevin Balsly. The Crusaders will try to generate more attack into their offense that struggled in 1989. The men of Moelller played what many believe was the toughest schedule lln the state in 1989 and 1990 will be just as tough. The Crusaders will play seven teams ranked in the Cincinnati Top Ten and also will play perennial Dayton soccer power Beavercreek. This is in addition to the City's toughest soccer conference, the
GCL Randy Hurley returns for his third season at the helm of the Crusader program along with last year's staff of Goalkeeper Coach Steve Mourer, Reserve Coach Bob Brunner and Freshmen Coach Bill de la Vega. The Crusaders have won 20, lost 12 and tied 6 the past two years and have gone into the final game of the season with a
chance to win the league title. 1990 may be the year Moeller captures its first GCL title since 1973.

OV~rt Friday, September 21, 1990, the Moeller Varsity Football Team defeated Dayton Dunbar 52-0 on a wet, muddy Galbreath Fie1d. The scoring got underway in the second quarter with Moeller earning 24 points. Joe McCullough caught a 9-yard pass from Neil Dougherty. Carlos Collins rushed for a 38-yard touchdown. Terry Knecht kicked a 24-yard field goal. Carlos Collins closed out the scoring with 4-yard run. In the third quarter, Junior fullback Joe Reardon scored on a 1-yard run. LaMont Mills scored the final three touchdowns in the 4th quarter for the Crusaders on rushes of 25, 11 and 46 yards. Terry Knecht kicked 5 of the 7 extra points with Erik Bryant adding the other 2. Because of the elements, Moeller had to use their rushing attack more than passing. Of the 832 yards of total offense, 304 was gained on the ground. Moeller recorded 17 first downs. Defensively, Chris Woycke and Chris Ryals had interceptions. The defense also held Dayton Dunbar to zero first downs. Moeller's record now stands at 4-1 at the mid-way point through the season. Reserves Review
MOE
GOES
The Reserve Crusaders beat Purcell-Marian 21-6 to up their record to 5-0. The offensive side of the ball was led by Mike Bell who had 2 touchdowns. One was a 40-yard catch and the other, a nice 6-yard run. The other touchdown was scored by Gannon Millman from 1 yard out. The offensive line was equally impressive. They were led by Mike Stofko who opened holes for our backs to "walk .. through. The defense was outstanding as it did not allow a touchdown. Purcell's only score was on a fumble recovery. Mark Abel and Ken Pflanz both had key interceptions. In the trenches, Mike Horan and Tony Ancona led the way by stopping their running game before it got started. The Cavaliers passing attack was also shut down effectively due mainly to the relentless pressure of the QB. by J. B. Lind

Friday. October 5, 1990, the Moeller Varsity Football Team remained undefeated in GCL play by defeating the Elder Panthers 20-17 in the closing seconds of regulation. Moeller scored first when Carlos Collins (32 car.-221 yds.) rushed for a two-yard touchdown early in the first quarter. Elder then sacked quarterback Neil Dougherty, scooped the fumble and raced 61 yards for a touchdown. Dougherty was injured on the play and junior quarterback Jeff Raussen finished the game for the Crusaders. Carlos Collins scored again before the end of the first half to give Moeller the 14-7 halftime edge. Neither team scored in the third quarter. Then Elder tied the game at the beginning of the 4th quarter on a 3-yard touchdown pass. Moeller marched down the field on their drive and Terry Knecht booted a 29-yard field goal. Moeller now had the lead 17-14 with under 5 minutes of play. Elder then took the ball down the field. A 4th-down pass, tipped by three Moeller defenders, was caught by an Elder receiver, keeping the drive alive. Elder was forced to settle for a 37-yard fieldgoal a fieldgoal which banked off the right upright and over the crossbar.

With less than a minute left, the Crusaders started with the ball inside their own 25-yard line. From their own 45, Moeller's Collins caught a short pass and raced down the Elder sidelines to the 11-yardline. With 6 ticks lefts on the clock, Terry Knecht booted his second field goal of the night, a 28 yarder, which gave the Crusaders their 6th win in seven games. Moeller's defense forced 4 interceptions, 2 by Chris Ryals and one each by Chris Woycke and Jason Knecht. Moeller's next game is at LaSalle on Friday, October 12th. by Sean Tunning

FRESHMEN FOOTBALL Frosh Football smashed Elder 20-3. The Elder Panther football team was soundly thumped in the Pit on October 2nd. Elder's opening drive stalled after being 1st and goal over the 5-yardline, settling for a field goal. That was the extent of the Elder Panther offense, as Moeller's Defense shut them down the rest of the way. Offensively; Mike Green threw two TD passes to Brian Balsly and Dave Lapham. Brian Balsly scored another. The Freshmen record is now 5-0. continued on page 3

Reserves Review The Reserve Crusaders pulled out another come-from-behind win over St. Xavier. Nothing went right for the Crusader offense in the first half. The only bright spot for the reserves was the blocked punt by Paul Blomer for a safety. The offense moved the ball some but most of the drives broke down. It didn't look good for Moeller going into the half losing 13-2. In the second half, the team looked 100S different as the offense took the opening drive and scored. The defense held tough and gave us the ball right back. At the beginning of the 4th quarter, the Crusaders scored again and that was all we needed. The defense held tough again causing a fumble that was recovered by Chris Lape. The offense then ran out the clock winning their sixth game in a row. Outstanding performances on the offense were Mike Bell who had big fourth down receptions from Dan Feichter. Chris Kent also had a big reception while the offensive line gave good protection in the second half. The defense was led by Chad Nahrup, Solomon Chinn, Mark Abel, Tony Ancona, Mike Horan, Paul Blomer and J. P. Harmeyer. They proved to be the real winners as they didn't allow St. X. to get a 1st down in the second half. by J. B. Lind

RESERVE FOOTBALL We finally dug a hol too deep to climb out of. Even though the Crusaders didn't stop fighting until the gun sounded, they lost 14-0. It seemed the offense couldn't get in sync and Elder came up with the big play at the right time. Though the score was 14-0, the game was much closer. In the 1st quarter, Denny Marinich returned a punt 65 yards to give the offense great field position. The Moeller "0" fell apart due to a sack and penalties. This wouldn't be the 1st time the Crusaders were penalized as the yellow flags hit the ground all day long. The offense was led by Brad Hronek and Mike Bell who had nice catches from passes by Dan Feichtner. The running game was led by Kelly Davis who had nice runs. The defense was led by Mark Able, J. P. Harmeyer, Tony Ancona and Mike Horan. by J. B. Lind CROSS COUNTRY On September 29th, the Moeller Cross Country finished 3rd at the St. Xavier Invitational. Outstanding performances were turned in by Freshmen John Flotz who finished 1st in the Frosh race. Junior Doug Kohls who finished 1st in the J. v. race and Senior Mike Brewer who finished 3rd in the Varsity race. SOCCER

MOELLER CHEERLEADERS The Moeller Cheerleaders attended the National Cheerleaders Association Summer Camp at the University of Kentucky in July. Over 400 cheerleaders from the Midwest attended this camp, where they were taught cheerleader techniques and dance routines. They also discussed ideas for spirit raisers. Each night the girls performed a cheer on which they were judged on technique, style and enthusiasm. Ribbons were a warded on the basis of their performance, with the blue ribbon being superior, red-excellent, and white-good. The Freshmen received 4 blue ribbons, theReserves-I red and 3 blue, and the Varsity-4 blue ribbons. Because of their outstanding efforts, both the Varsity and Reserve squads were named as Finalists to compete for
l
l
the Award of Excellence. To have 2 squads in this prestigious competition is a testament to the strength of Moeller Cheerleading. The Spirit Stick is another award which is given out at camp. It is given by the camp instructors to the squads which show the most enthusiasm and spirit, while also demonstrating friendliness, leadership and exemplary behavior. All three Moeller squads consistently received the Spirit Stick, the only school to be so honored. In addition to the above a wards, the girls received the "Spirit A ward", the most prestigious award given at camp. Each squad in attendance voted for the award, which is based on cheerleading technique, unity, friendliness, cooperation, leadership, and sportsmanship. The Moeller squad was overwhelmingly chosen for this award.

During the season, in addition ,to practices, game performances and competitions, the girls make signs for the locker room, do individual letters for each player each game, and decorate each Senior's home once during the season. They are also involved in several fundraising efforts. Congratulations to all the Moeller Cheerleaders for their hard work, dedication and enthusiasm. They are doing an excellent job of continuing the Moeller Tradition and keeping the Family Spirit alive.

ONE MORE for GCL title I The Moeller Varsity Football Team defeated the LaSalle Lancers 21-0 in a pivotal GCL game Friday, October 12, 1990 at Lancer Stadium. The Crusaders are now 7-1 overall while the Lancers drop to 6-2. The win clinched at least a tie for the GCL Championship. The defense came up with a great goalline stand in the first quarter. On fourth and goal inside the three yardline, Chris Ryals came up with a touchdownsaving tackle keeping the game tied at 0-0. The momentum then swayed in the direction of the Crusaders. Carlos Collins carried the ball into the endzone from two yards out capping a 16 play, over aminute drive. Terry Knecht kicked the extra point and Moeller led at halftime, 7-0. In the third quarter, LaMont Mills scored on a 2-yard run which again capped another long time-comsuming drive. Quarterback Neil Dougherty added the insurance touchdown in the fourth quarter on a 6-yard touchdown run.
20
The Moeller offense amassed nearly 250 yards of total offense in the muddy turf while the defense held the Lancers to 71 total yards. LaSalle didn't complete a pass - all 71 were gained on the ground. Next week, Friday, October 19th, the Crusaders will travel to Roger Bacon to complete their schedule against GCL opponents. A win for Moeller against the Spartans will earn the GCL championship with an undefeated 4-0 record in the league. Game time has been scheduled for 8:00 PM. by Sean Tunning

Talawanda faces a •tough' opponent in Miamisburg and could possibly be upset. If they are, their total would drop to 109 points also. Middletown goes against Lakota. A1though they wi 11 be favored, it would not be a major upset for Lakota to win. If that occurs, the Middies are out completely as they would finish Week 9 with only 84. 5 points. A Lakota victory would at best give them a total of 99 points and a 'possible' shot at the playoffs, especially if Talawanda should lose.

RESERVE FOOTBALL The Reserve Crusaders got back on track Saturday beating LaSalle 8-6. The Crusaders not only had to battle the Lancers, but had to battle the elements. The offense took the opening drive to LaSalle 10 yardline, but the drive broke down and we were stopped on fourth down. The next drive, the offense took the ball down the field and Dan Fiechtner scored on a 1-yard run. Dan then scored the two point conversion for the only points of the game. Also, we had a spectacular catch by Mike Bell and Brad Hronek. Mike tipped it in the air and Brad came down with it on the 15yardl ine. The defense won the game for Moeller as they stuffed everything but one big play for LaSalle. Mike Horan had two big sacks and Jeff McDonough had a sack to stop the 2-point conversion attempt. The rest of the defensive battle was a total team effort. On special teams, Denny Marinich kicked 4 punts for an average of 34 yards. by J. B. Lind

FRESHMEN FOOTBALL On Tuesday, October 9th, the Freshmen Football Team stunned LaSalle, 12-0, in a well-played game despite the sloppy conditions. Pat Hamill and Kevin Guber Collected an interception and a fumble recovery, defensively while Shane Guice and Wolfgang Scholz scored touchdowns.

Last spring the varsity baseball team was State and City Poll champions, GCL and Coaches Classic Champions along with being nationally ranked by USA TODAY. Their final record was 23-4; the state poll honor was the first in the school's history. The varsity squad was not the only team to enjoy a championship year. The junior varsity won their third straight league title (8-2) and finished 15-4. The freshmen nine recorded a 14-1 season which was the best winning percentage on that level in the school's history. Lost through graduation were 12 seniors, including five starters and three pitchers. Three of the starter: David Bell, 38, Brad Hindersman, catcher, and Adam Hyzdu, CF, were three year starters. Bell ( Cleveland, 7th round) and
Hyzdu (San Francisco, 1st round and 15th pick over all ) were drafted and signed by the major leagues. Hindersman accepted a basebaE scholarship to the University of Kentucky. Also graduating were two year starters Todd Ille, LF, first baseman Jerry Storm and pitcher Jeff Helle, who was 8-1 on the year. Twenty three year head coach Mike Cameron and long time assistant Paul Smith (18 years) will build the 1991 team around eleven returning seniors. Two were starters, shortstop Scan Flynn, .276, 21 hits and outfidder Derrick Davis, .257, 21 hits. Pitchers returning are first team all league selection Todd Burwinkel, 8-0, Neil Dougherty, 1-0, Joe McCullough, 1-1 and Pat Schafer, 0-0. Other returning players include catchers Jim Coleman, .400 and Ryan Porter, .161; infielders Doug Schnci-
der, .100 and Steve Larkin. Bart McMannon, .400 is a returning outfield. McCullough and Schafer are also outfielders. Coach Cameron is very fortunate to "'lave very capable assistants. Besides Paul Smith, this spring Bill Brewer (4 years) and Chuck Wene (2 years) will head up the freshmen program while Barry Borman (7 years) and Bob Paola (2 years) will handle the junior varsity program. It is th,..ough the efforts and dedication of the assistant coaches that allows Moeller to have the baseball program they do. The players and coaches hope you will come out often to see them play, both on the road and at their bcautifllll home field which is at the Blue Ash Sports Center.

Moeller's Lamont Hills (26) breaks through for a short gain in the first quarter Friday against Princeton.
page
Friday, October 26, 1990, the Moeller Varsity Football Team defeated the Princeton Vikings 28-0 at Galbreath Field. This victory clinched the City Championship and improved Moeller's overall record to 9-1. Princeton dominated the football game in the first half and the Vikings nearly scored twice. The first threat saw Princeton drive down field to the eight-yard line. However, a great defensive stand stopped the Vikings on four straight downs. Moeller obtained possession but soon was forced to punt out of their own endzone. Princeton, having great field position, bought the ball down deeper into Crusader territory. Two field goal attempts in the closing seconds of the second quarter proved to be unsuccessful, the first falling short of the crossbar, the second attempt, set up by a Moeller penalty, was wide to the left. At halftime, Princeton led the statisic battle with more first downs and more total yards. Yet the score was still tied 0-0. Carlos Collins scored Moeller's first touchdown early in the third quarter on a 29-yard romp, breaking tackles along the way. Princeton's ensuing drive proved fatal for the Vikings. Driving all the way down to the one yard line, the ball fumbled and pounced on by defensive linemen Dan Krimmer and Mark Mazuk. The Moeller offense then mounted a 99-yard drive capped by a 17-yard touchdown pass to Steve Langenkamp from Neil Dougherty.

RESERVE FOOTBALL The Reserve Crusaders beat Princeton Saturday 16-0 to end the year with a 9-1 record. The Crusaders proved to be strong as the defense was the difference. The Crusader Defense recorded a ZIP and forced 3 turnovers. They were led by Mark Abel who had an interception and a nice return for a 65-yard touchdown. Mike Horan, Tony Ancona, Willie Rodriquez, J. P. Harmeyer and Denny Marinich shut down the option and forced Princeton out of their game plan. On offense, the Crusaders had a couple nice drives led by Brad Hronek, Mike Bell, and Jim Kennedy's receptions from Dan Fiechtner. The ground game was led by Gannon Nillman and Kelly Davis running through the holes made by Mike Stofko, Kevin Wiwi, Mike Bowman, Robert Brady, Matt Redding and Dave Wirth. Chad Siegert scored the only Moeller offensive touchdown. by J. B. Lind

IF a II ---Best EVJERS CROSS COUNTRY REGIONAL QUALIFIER
FALL - BEST "EVERS" Soccer - Sectional Finalist The 1990 Moeller Varsity Soccer Squad became the first team in the history of this sport to reach the Sectional finals. Although the No. 3-seeded team going in, the team battled it's way into the finals with victories over Lemon-Monroe 4-0 and a 3-0 triumph at Fairfield. In the championship game against the number seeded Lakota Thunderbirds, the Crusaders fell behind 1-0 in the first five minutes of play. They battled the 'Birds' evenly until with about 8 minutes remaining in the game, the officials ruled that a 'blocked' goal had actually broken the plane of the goal. The final 2-0 outcome was a bitter loss for all, but of course, it was especially tough for the outstanding group of Seniors. The final tally of 12-6-3 brings the three-year record of Coach Randy Hurley and his staff of Steve Mourer, Bob Brunner and Bill de le Vega to a solid 32-18-
9.
The school is very proud and appreciative of the efforts of everyone connected with the program.
This squad served to round out what might be the best ever fall sports season in the history of the school. Coming off a regular season invitational schedule of eight they major meets in which finished no lower than 3rd place in seven of the eight, the team finished 8th in the final city poll. They were determined to prove this vote to be a bit inaccurate and they ran a beautiful District Meet race to capture 4th place and with it a berth in the Regionals. In accomplishing this objective, they became the first Moeller squad to ever do so. Although the Regional outing was not a good one, Coach Tim Erdmann and his dedicated staff of Forrest Brandt and Rick Gemereth saw yet another plateau reached. There will be losses due to graduation as there must be in the persons of Senior CoCaptains Mike Brewer Cone of our best ever over his entire career) and Matt Holland. Our sincere thanks and congratulations to everyone!
Thank you •

Four former Moeller graduates were once again playing football on the same field recently. But this time, two were on each side of the ball at the Boston College vs Penn State game at Alumni Field in Boston. All four Moeller grads turned in stellar performances. On the B.C. side of the ball was fifth-year senior cocaptain Ray Hilvert. Ray is a wide receiver and a 1986 graduate of Moeller. Brian Williams also a fifth-year senior plays defensive/corner back for B.C. and also graduated from Moeller in '86. On the Nittany Lion side of the ball are two 1988 graduates of Moeller. Greg Huntington is a red-shirt sophomore and an outstanding offensive guard for Penn State. Bill Spoor is also a red-shirt sophomore and a wide receiver and extra point, field goal holder for the Nittany Lions. In addition to all four see1ng a lot of action during the game, it afforded them an opportunity to meet and renew old acquaiantances after the game. (Actually only 3 of the 4 as Hilvert received a concussion and was being treated.) submitted by Adele Iwanusa

The Moeller Fighting Crusaders Hockey Team has started yet another Hockey season on a positive note. Behind the coaching of veterans John Basalyga, Rob Lubanski and Pete Buscani, this year's hockey team has the potential to be one of the most talented and determined teams in the making. The Moeller leers go up against a strong schedule this year but feel very confident that the outcome will be in their favor. The defense will be headed this year by Seniors Eric Miller, the previous most valuable defenseman, and Mike Godar. While the offense will be headed by Seniors Dave Raymer, the previous top scorer, Randy Homoelle and Rob Empie. With the teams' ten-game home schedule, it is expected that there will be excellent turn out and extreme excitement this year at Northland Ice Center. Moeller's first home game is on November 17 against the Columbus Capitals.

WINTER SPORTS BEGIN ..... BASKETBALL The 1990-91 Varsity, Reserve and Freshmen Basketball Teams began practice on Monday. October 29th. On the Freshmen level, first-year (Moeller) coaches Terry Jenkins and Dave Bidwell, MHS '83, greeted approximately 45 candidates. Under the alert eyes of these two coaches, plus those of the Reserve and Varsity Staff, the number is slowing being reduced to a 16-18 member squad. First opinions of these rookies indicates excellent size and above average team speed. The Moeller Sophomores will be the charges of Bill Brewer, who is hoping to carry the winning spirit of this group up to the Reserve level. The challenge will be greater than ever as it is possible that one or two Sophs might be seeing considerable Varsity time. At the present time, Coach Carl Kremer and Mike Cregan are working with 12 Varsity candidates as they await a group of 4-5 BKBaller's to complete their Football season. This figures to be a very young Varsity Squad which will have slightly above-average size, good shooting and average speed. All the candidates are certainly giving their best and if their current intensity can be translated into team play, it will be a fine season on all levels. A special-added dimension to the staff for the 1990-91 season will be the presence of Coach Dave Hammer who will be assisting the program at virtually every level. Dave has most recently been a vital cog in the Woodward Bulldog's success. We welcome Dave back to Moeller High School.
SWIMMING AND DIVING It is difficult to believe that Co-Coaches Lynn Marggrander and Anne Schoenberger will be in their fifth season as the Moeller swimming mentors. Jon Borman, MHS '88, will be in year three of his duties as our diving coach. One of the primary goals of this trio will be to get our number of participants back up to our norma 1 25+ or greater. Early indications give high hopes of this becoming a reality. The 90-91 team will be led by State Qualifier Senior John Matanguihan and Junior Jason Glorius. John has been a twotime qualifier in swimming, while Jason has qualified in diving in both of his first two years. For the first time in about six years, the team will be training at Sycamore High School during the evenings.
WRESTLING The proof that organization, hardwork and dedication can foster a 'solid, winning program' can be found in the Moeller Wrestling Team. Head Coach Jeff Gaier has impressed everyone that he has come in contact with. He is a dedicated, caring and extremely knowledgeable coach. Although the program may still lack numbers in the Reserve and Freshmen weight classes, the Varsity squad should be solid and very competitive. State Qualifier Scott Ostholthoff will be returning for his junior year at 189 pounds and last year's freshmen sensation, Ron Zinkan, will be back to bolster the lower weight classes. There will be veteran performers returning in approximately nine weights.
