After the Moeller golf team played poorly in the Troy Invitational on Sept. 21, coach Rick Bohne could see that his players were pressing. "It seemed like the kids were trying to be too perfect and were putting too much pressure on themselves," Bohne said. "I told them not to focus so much on results, just play your best and the scores will come.'' The Crusaders evidently used that advice Wednesday and won the Cincinnati East Division I sectional tournament at Glenview Golf Course. Moeller shot 306, eight strokes better than second-place Milford and 11 ahead of Sycamore, which earned the third and final qualifying spot for next Friday's district tournament at Weatherwax Golf Course in Middletown. All four Moeller scorers shot in the 70s, paced by junior Tom Yost's l-over 73. Sycamore was led by Adam Dumes, who had a hole-in-one on the 127-yard, par-3 14th hole in his round of 74. Princeton senior Jason Dingman shot 70 to win the medal. It's the fourth straight year in which he's qualified as an individual from a non-qualifying team. Also qualifying as individuals were Lakota's Jason Harter and PATRICK REDDY /The Cincinnati Post Walnut Hills' John Fischer. Junior Tom Yost, who led Moeller to the sectional championship with a They finished at 76 with Glen 1-over 73, takes aim at the cup on the 1Oth green at Glenview. · Este's Mike Heppner, who was

knocked out in a playoff.

Division II golf Indian Hill was declared, champion on a tiebreaker with Loveland after both teams shot 323 at Glenview. In the tiebreak-~ er - the score of each team's · fifth man - Indian Hill's Andy~ Boehm shot 88 compared to 93 · for Loveland's Craig Dickey. The' sectional title was the fourth' straight for Indian Hill. Hamilton Badin, headed by' medalist Jim Zettler's l-over 73, was the third and final qualify-• ing team, at 329., ·· Qualifying individually were Purcell Marian's Paul Snyder; (74), Bethel-Tate's Bronell Partin (75) and New Richmond's" Craig Fisher (76).

In Division II, the pressure will be on jim Zettler to carry a Badin team that qualified for the state tournament last season. Summit Country Day has led the way among Division III schools this season, while Cincinnati Country Day could prove to be a spoiler .

The uniform isn't exactly what Mike Rocawich had in mind, but the 15-year-old Moeller sophomore isn't complaining. Instead of putting on shoulder

. Prep sports pads underneath a Crusader football jersey on Friday, Rocawich will be wearing a Moeller golf shirt at Weatherwax Golf Course for the Division I district tournament. The Crusaders, along with 11 other Cincinnati-area teams, will : compete in the District Tournament, with the top three teams in each division earning a berth in the state golf tournament. Besides Moeller, Sycamore, St. Xavier. Fairfield, Milford (Division 1), Badin, Loveland and Indian Hill (Division II) and Cincinnati Country Day and Summit Country Day (Division III) will compete for the trip to Columbus. "When Dad (Mike Sr.) was transfered to Cincinnati in july, he looked for a home in the Moeller school district," Rocawich said. i "He wanted me to play football at ' Moeller." A starter for the reserve team at Dublin last year as a freshman, Rocawich immediately attended tryouts at Moeller, hoping to make it as a linebacker. "They wanted me to play the offensive line," Rocawich, a sixfoot, 190 pounder, said. "I was told I wasn't quick enough to play linebacker." Rather than fight the issue, Rocawich contacted Moeller golf

coach Rick Bohne about playing golf. "One of the first questions I asked Mike was how long he had been playing golf," Bohne said. "When he told me about three months, I didn't hold much hope for him." Bohne told Rocawich that team tryout consisted of playing in the Cincinnati Recreation Commission junior Golf Tournament. Rocawich finished a respectable eighth in the tourney. "Mike also told me that he had never played any competitive golf before the tournament," Bohne said. ''When I saw him play in the

city tournament, I couldn't believe it." On three occasions this season, Rocawich earned medaiist honors as the Crusaders compiled an 8-6 record. "We don't have a senior on the team," Bohne said. "Other than St. Xavier, I think this tournament is as wide open as I've seen it in eight years of coaching." City champion St. Xavier, a balanced and deep team, will be led by Pete Kelly, Mike Isaac, Matt Thiemann and Steve Kline. But Milford, Fairfield, Colerain and Sycamore have the capability to run away \vith the top prize.

The jack Nicklaus Tennis Center will be the site of the Division I district girls tennis tournament Friday and Saturday. Cincinnati's Division II district qualifiers will play at Thomas Cloud Park in Dayton in an attempt to earn a berth in the state meet in Columbus on Oct. 17-18. The outlook for Cincinnati Division I players isn't bright because of the presence of the entire Centerville team, which has dominated Southwestern Ohio recently. Cincinnati's best chances in doubles rests with the Ursuline team of ]eni Becker and Tara Hardin along with Sycamore's duos of Joan Marshall-Meta Rascov and Lauren Casper-Jill Korach. Talawanda's Julie Peirson, Ursuline's Cindy Kroth and Anderson's Amy Hathaway could advance in singles. In Division II, Donna Thomas of CCD along with Margie Spray and Arlie Eiseman of Summit should advance in the singles competition while the CCD's doubles team of Paige Heimann and Cindy jeffers appears to be a lock. The top four players advance to the state tournament in Division I while the top five advance in the Division II tournament.
