GOLF ALL-STARS BOYS' FIRST TEAM Dave Tepe, Lakota East

The senior tied for third with a 158 in his first state appearance.

The senior shot a 159 at state and tied for sixth. He tied for third at the district tournament with a 71.

Sean Keating, St. Xavier The senior shot a 77 in the second round to lead the Bombers to the state title. He was tied for third overall at state and committed to play at Dayton.

John Beringer, Moeller The senior shot a 158 overall to tie for third at the state tournament and made the GCGCA first team.

Matt Buse, St. Xavier The senior was the Greater Catholic League South division player of the year. He has committed to play at Dayton.

Andrew Dorn, Moeller The sophomore tied for 14th at state with a 162 overall and was first-team aii-GCGCA.

Simran Magowan, Moeller

The senior tied for 20th at state with a 165 overall and was first-team aii-GCGCA.

The senior was the GCGCA Divisions II-III player of the year with a 37.2 average during the regular season.

The junior tied for 11th at the Division II state tournament with a 161 overall. He was third at the district tournament with a 76.

Moeller golf coach Rick Bohne !bas no idea who his best player is, and that's a problem he would iove to have every year.

Bohne laughed - and dodged the question - when he was asked to name his top player. ''Who is the better player? I don't know," Bohne said. "It de[)ends on the day. We really have three kids that on any day can shoot 70-73 with no problems."

Sophomore Michael Irwin has been the surprise of the preseason, Bohne said.

"He was a kid who we thought would be able to help us as a junior and senior," Bohne said, "but he may be proving that he's a varsity player right now."

Mason's depth so good 'it's almost unfair'

In his years of coaching and following area high school girls' golf, lakota West coach Tun Lambert has seen dozens of talented players and great teams.

But Lambert, a local PGA pro, has never seen a team as loaded as this season's Mason girls.

"It's the best top-to-bottom :lepth I've ever seen," Lambert said. "'They should set a new state ~coring record if the weather is good and they learn to bond as a mit."

The Comets, who finished as Division I state runners-up, return six ill-district players from last season, including first-team honorees >enior Alexis Nelson and sophomore Emily Wright.

'There are definitely high schools that have had better indi-

vidual golfers," Mason coach Fred Reeder said, "but our team depth from one through six is just amazing. It's almost unfair.''

Wright placed 16th at the state meet last year as a freshman and had a busy offseason, winning the Girls' Junior Met and placing second in the Girls' State Champi- Nelson unship in July.

Reeder said he thinks Nelson will be the squad's top scorer, but is excited about Wright's potential.

"She'll play wherever she wants to (in college),'' he said. "Her swing is just amazing."

In addition to Nelson and Wright, the Comets return second-team all-district members Elizabeth Nebraski and Erin Micqel, as well as third-team mem-

Old, new powers .ready for tourneys

The beginning ofDivision I golfs postseason brings some high hopes. A loaded Mason girls' team looks to improve on last year's state runner-up finish, while on the boys' side, new challengers have their sights set on traditional· powerhouses St Xavier and Moeller.

But as Sycamore boys' golf coach Paul Phillips says: ''With a one-day event like this, you never know who might get hot" Here's a quick look at the fields:

BOYS • Top teams - Moeller and St. Xavier:

When you've made it to the state tournament the past six years (Moeller), six of the past eight years (St Xavier) or bring back three starters from a state<jualifying team ..-------, (both), you have to be considered the favorites.

Four-year starter Wes Denny and fellow seniors Alex Roth and Stephen Hesterberg top the A\<iators' lineup.

'There's motivation there - the kids know what they need to do," said Sycamore coach Paul Phillips. "It's a good, veteran bunch."

A similarly experienced Lakota East squad hopes to rebound from a disappointing second-place showing in the Greater Miami Conference tournament Seniors Aidan Javed and David Tepe are the Thunderhawks' heavy hitters.

"I'm looking to see how they respond to getting thumped (by Sycamore)," said Lakota East coach Jeff Combs. 'They've had very high expectations all season."

Players to watch:

• St Xavier's Sean Keating owns the lowest scoring average in the GCL, while teammate Matt Buse was the South Division's Golfer of the Year.

• Moeller's Andrew Dorn was the top local finisher at last year's state tournament, tying for seventh place.

• Lakota East's Aldan Javed was an individual state qualifier last season and ended up tied for lith.

Chris Conway's opinion that lakota West sophomore Korey Ward is Cincinnati's best high school golfer probably seemed biased. ¡ After Wednesday, the Frrebirds coach is looking as objective as Solomon.

Ward overcame wind, suddenly chilly temperatures and a late dose of rain to shoot what is believed to be a record 34-33- 67 and earn medalist honors at the Division I boys sectional .tournament over a 6,425-yard, par-72 course laid over halves of two courses at Glenview.

"It was amazing," Ward said. "I was 5under through 12 and parred the last six. I didn't take advantage of the last six holes. I hit the ball real well. I only missed two greens. I did everything right I didn't make any mental mistakes."

Ward's sectional perfonnance extended a season in which ht!'s already logged rounds of 66, 67, 68 and two69s. '!Korey's an elite golfer," Conway said. "His game is very, very mature.

He plays a game not many high school players play. He works hard atit, and he's reaping the rewards." fJbere are no official records, but longtime Milford coach Doug Kasseh and Moeller coach Rick Bohne believe Ward's round bettered the 69 shot by Crusader Ryan Reichoff in 1993.

Team scores are compiled from the scores of each squad's top four finishers.

The top four teams and the top four individuals from the other teams earned berths in the district championship next Wednesday at Middletown's Weatherwax Golt Course.

Milford junior Nick Regueyra shota37-39-76to lead the individual qualifiers. Amelia senior Bill .Rhinehart followed with a 37-40- 77.

Moeller had to overcome a poor perfonnance on the front nine, Bohne said.

'The way we came back on the back: nine made me proud," said Bohne, pointing out senior Chris Cutter, who shot a 40 on his front nine and 35 on the back. "He her geyed each of the first five holes and playeG the last 13 2-under. That typifies the way we came back."

Feltner, Van Skaik clinch state trips Enquirer staff reports

Middletown Christian senior Kristie Feltner and Madeira sophomore Brooke Van Skaik earned trips to the state tournament Wednesday with their efforts in the Division II girls' district golf tournament Feltner shot an 80, while Van Skaik had an 82 at Heathetwoode Golf Course in Springboro.

It is the second consecutive state berth for Van Skaik, who was 27th last season in Division I. 'It is the first state appearance for Feltner, who missed the district tournament last season by two shots.

"Kristie played really well (Wednesday)," Middletown Christian coach Dr. Gary Cobb said. "She was very consistent, hitting all but one drive well and when she did not hit the green, she was able to get up and down for pars probably six tinles."

Cobb said Feltner is the first Middletown Christian athlete in any sport to capture a state berth in an Ohio High School Athletic Association tournament Tippecanoe (353), Alter (361) and Gt'aham (364) earned trips to state as teain qualifiers. Scott Foster of Princeton also shot a 73 to qualify for the district tournament as an individual. Talawanda's Willy Davidge, Harrison's Dylan Ramsey and Oak Hills' Brandon Freeman also qualified as individuals.

John Burger finished fourth with a 76 to lead La Salle, Kevin Hartoin finished fifth with a 77 to lead Elder, and Adam Zuleger tied for seventh with a 79 to lead Fairfield.

Roundup Middletown finished first with a 319, followed by Centerville at 321, Vandalia-Butler at 328 and Huber Heights Wayne at 330.

Michael Roberts shot a 74 to finish in second place for the Middies.

Roberts, along with Conor O'Hea with an 80, were the top two individuals for Middletown.

Division I sectional at Reid Part<, Springfield: Wilmington's Craig Osterbrock shot a 77 to help lead the Hurricanes to a first-place finish.

Phillip Gilmore finished in a tie for second place with an 80, Brad Fuller tied for eighth place with an 84, and Kirby Seeger tied for lOth place with an 85 to round out the Wilmington golfers among the top 10.

LakotabEast caps tough week with state berth

The lakota East boys' golf team has been on a mission since finishing second in the Greater Miami Conference tournament.

Coming in third in last week's Division I sectional at Glenview only fueled the Thunderhawks' feiVor, to the point that they participated in extra practice sessions going into Wednesday's district tournament.

Passion and practice paid off as lakota East, the No.3 team in the Enquirer Division I coaches' poll, rang up a 297 team score -12 strokes better than its collective sectional card- to win the district championship and earn its first state tournament berth since Lakota split its high schools for the 1997-98 school year.

"We're very excited," coach Jeff Combs said. "I will say this: Our guys are phenomenal players, but they've worked the hardest over the past week that they've worked all year. They recommitted themselves. I told the parents that you can tell they've gotten better in one week. They rededicated themselves."

No. 1 St. Xavier finished second and fifthranked Moeller third, extending to seven years the longest current streak of qualifying for the state tournament, Crusaders coach Rick Bohne said.

The Bombers shot a collective 146 on the back nine, a 10-shot improvement over their front-nine score.

"Tilis is the first time I can remember that we had all five athletes finish in the 70s," said lith-year St. Xavier coach Brian Shircliff.

The top three teams and top three individuals from non-qualifying teams earned berths in the two-day state tournament next Friday and Saturday at Ohio State University's Scarlet Course. lakota West sophomore Korey Ward shot a 2-under-par70 over a 7,000-yard layout at Middletown's Weatherwax Golf Course to share medalist honors and earn one of the individual berths.

Seniors Aidan Javed and Dave Tepe each shot 1-under 71 to lead lakota East to Columbus. The Thunderhawks practiced last week on what normally are days off, including a couple of days on their own, Tepe said.

"We knew there was room for improvement," said Tepe, who was able to capitalize on greens left soft and wet by overnight and morning showers. "Actually, I thought it created some lower scores. The wetness helped the greens hold and even let you get some spinback. I like the soft feel."

COLUMBUS- Today could be fu:ll of rewards for several area teams and individuals in the Division I boys' golf state toumament on Ohio State's Scarlet Course.

Moeller, Lakota East and St. Xavier all are within eight strokes of the lead in the team stan rungs, and Lakota East senior David Tepe and Lakota West sophomore Korey Ward are tied with Dublin Jerome's Aaron Siekmann for first individually. Each shot 74.

The Crusaders also were second after the first day a year ago but were 10 strokes back Heading into today's final round, Moeller is second with 325- just two strokes behind defending champion Dublin Jerome (323) -and Lakota East is tied for third with Watterson (326). St. Xavier is seventh (331).

Senior John Beringer is fourth individually after carding a 77 to lead Moeller. Also competing for the Crusaders are Andrew Dom (80), Chris Cutter (83) and Simran Magowan {85). ''We competed hard, but we lost some shots out there that we were kind of disappointed about," said coach Rick Bohne, whose team shot 652 a year ago to finish second behind Jerome. "We made some mental mistakes with some course management. We've got to really stay patient and di.sciplined.v Ward and Tepe both believed that the key to their strong opening rounds was their putting ability.

'The only thing going well for me honestly

was my putting," Ward said. "My goals were to be up there at the end of day one. I really wasn't that nervous about it because I've played in other toumaments. ~ Tepe was particularly strong on the front, where he shot 35. "My first nine holes I had an unbelievable short game going on,"Tepe said. "I only had 11 putts through nine holes, and I also had a chipin.

"As a team we're only three back and we ended UI> taking a 92, so obviously there's room for us to bring our score down."

SUCavier, which took fmuth a year ago, has an all-senior lineup that tearures Matt Buse (80), Sean Keating (81), Colin Crane (85), Colin Reenan (85) and Andy Schweer (89).

It's the Bombers' fifth consecutive trip to state. 路 "I think for everyone, the course played ex路 tremely challenging,'' coach Brian Shircl.iff said. "I think we're feeling good about the way we played and we're looking forward to (today)."

Princeton's Scott Fuster is tied for 29th with Cutter after shooting 83. He started off with a 38 on the back before shooting 45 on the :front.

"I thought that anything under 80 is a good score," Foster said. "Early on I was putting well, butit started to get to where I couldn't do anything well. I'm happy I got here, but I'd just like to put on a little better showing (today)."

Bombers finish strong, watch foes faltet St. Xwins first golf title since 1995

COLUMBUS - The St. Xavier boys' golf team entered the final round of the Division I state tournament Saturday on Ohio State's Scarlet Course with six teams to pass after what it considered a notso-great opening round Friday.

After being one of the first six teams to turn in their scores, it occurred to the members of the Bombers that the 322 they had posted for a 653 total might be just

enough to keep them in contention.

It was a hunch that proved correct.

Most of the team then went back out to watch as opening-round leader and defending state champion Dublin Jerome stumbled to a 655, Cleveland St. Ignatius turned in a 656 and Moeller finished with a 658 to give the Bombers the championship.

It was St. Xavier's first title since 1995 and its third overall, with the other coming in 1957.

"When we were done, it was the

State boys' goH best score up there so far so we decided to go back onto the course and maybe put a little pressure on the other teams," senior Sean Keating said. "I've been dreaming of this since my freshman year."

Keating led the way with a 77 Saturday and a two-day total of 158 that left him tied for third overall with Lakota East's Dave Tepe and Moeller's John Beringer.

Lakota West sophomore Korey Ward, who was the co-leader with Tepe after the first round, turned in a 77 for individual medalist honors

with a 151. Jerome's Aaron Sickmann (153) was second.

'This was my goal and it was my expectation after winning confer· ence, sectional and district titles," Ward said. 'Through four holes I was 1-under, but the next three I went 4-over. Then on the back I bogeyed four straight holes, but I made sure I scrapped out a good 77.

I'm happy I accomplished this."

Tepe stumbled to an 84 Saturday after shooting 74 on Friday in his first state appearance. ·'I'm just happy I finished in the top five," Tepe said. "Obviously I didn't play well today, but getting third overall, I can't complain."

For St. Xavier, it was a group of five seniors - as it was when the Bombers won the 1995 title - that competed at state. Following Keating were Matt Buse (161), Colin Crane (165), Colin Reenan (169) and Andy Schweer (177).

Crane made an eagle on tl1e opening hole Saturday that sparked the comeback.

'This is a challenging course, and to see our guys fight so hard on it, it's just such an incredible thing," St. Xavier coach Brian Shircliff said. ''1be guys really reacted after Colin Crane made that eagle from about 165 yards on the first hole. It took five guys to really play solid golf on

this golf course."

Also competing for M~er were Andrew Dorn (162), ~1 Magowan (165), Chris Cuttei-Jt5) and Nick Tenhundfeld (176). ,.
