From President Marshall Hyzdu: Financial success will involve maintaining and boosting financial support in addition to the use of state money for specific needs. The school will focus on increasing named scholarships to further solidify student financial aid through endowment.
Welcome to another school year at Moeller High School. This year our doors opened to new hallways, new classrooms, and a new excitement that all of these changes bring. With about a third of Moeller’s Strategic Plan completed, the school embraces the 2018-19 school year with a feeling of success coupled with a determination to reach new heights of accomplishment. We expect this to be another remarkable year in Moeller’s storied history. We have made three recent appointments to continue our tradition: Carl Kremer has assumed the role of Principal after a year as interim. He is a true leader at Moeller and highly respected by students, parents and teachers alike. He is focused on developing this new administrative team to provide the best leadership for our students and families. n
Mike Shaffer has taken on the role of Dean of Student Life after many years of being one of Moeller’s best teachers. He will handle student issues ranging from discipline to student development. This role is an integral part of developing the whole student. n
n Dr. Christine Brookbank, Ed.D, has been hired as Academic Dean. She is focused on defining our academic vision and the professional development of our teachers. Moeller is fully committed to investing in our academics and our teachers.
Also Noteworthy Academic investment, a key area of importance, will see Dr. Brookbank working with faculty to develop a clear vision to lead our already top tier academic programs. Professional development will target increasing teacher investment to accelerate recent academic successes in college entry test scores, college preparedness and more. Facilities continue to be an area of major importance. The Classroom 2.0 Project has changed the learning environment, from how teachers teach to how students learn. We are constantly involving teachers in discussions about how to best utilize the new learning environment. The final phase next summer will be the school’s third floor classrooms and main building restrooms. 4 • ARCHBISHOP MOELLER HIGH SCHOOL | ANNUAL REPORT 2018
As part of the financial strategy Moeller plans to utilize auxiliary funds from the State of Ohio to support teacher and strategic initiatives for the school. For example the upgraded technology in the classroom enhances the learning environment for students and increases interaction with teachers. The Strategic Plan is driving positive change throughout the school in everything from academics to alumni to technology to faith. Safety School safety is being addressed in many ways with investment in cyber-security, ALICE training, and mental health training. In addition, an increase in security hardware – cameras, door locks – and the institution of new locker policies are all steps to protect our students. Moeller’s Culture In addition to facilities, finances and academics, Marianist Brother Ron Luksic is leading an initiative to train students and staff on the tenets of Marianist Hospitality to create an even more inviting atmosphere at the school. Classroom 2.0
The halls of Moeller change every year. The lockers fill with new books, schedules are updated, freshmen students enter and students renew their goals. This year, however, the second floor hallway and classrooms looked very different. Over the summer, lockers were removed from the hallway and rooms were transformed from their 1960 vintage to 21st century, state-of-the-art learning environments. This project, known as Classroom 2.0, included several upgrades including: n projection systems to allow students and teachers to display and discuss work n new, flexible furniture n numerous data ports and charging stations n carpeting for improved acoustics n LED lights to become more energy efficient n air conditioning to extend the use of the classrooms Thank you to all of the generous donors who made the first phase of Classroom 2.0 a success. Emerging Leaders – The Future Built on Moeller Alumni Moeller alumni excel in many ways, they anchor the school tradition and become guides to the future. Many Moeller alumni give back time, talent and financial support — all with the hope of providing the next generation the Moeller experience they value and appreciate. Younger alums, while busy making their ways in the world, continue giving back. About Charlie Fiessinger ‘11 Charlie came to Moeller in the footsteps of his brother, Jimmy ’09. For Charlie, the “shadow day” made the difference. “I immediately knew it was the place for me.” During his time at Moeller, Charlie was actively involved in the House System — first as a member of Eveslage House and then as School Captain his senior year. He was a member of the football team, the Academic Team and a Kairos retreat leader. Charlie went on to the University of Notre Dame where he studied applied and computational mathematics and statistics and then settled in Chicago to pursue a career as an investment banking analyst. Charlie remains active in the Moeller community by attending alumni events held in Chicago and visiting the school when he returns to Cincinnati. As Charlie began his own career, he felt the need to give back. Through his gratitude, Charlie is considered an Emerging Leader in the Marianist Society. The designation was created for younger alumni who have annually donated $250 or more. When asked how he felt about the importance of giving back Charlie said: “I truly can’t describe the impact Moeller had on my family. I can only hope our contributions will allow future Men of Moeller to have similar experiences.” Learning that Moeller’s donations and endowment lag behind other all-boys high schools in greater Cincinnati was eye-opening for Charlie. “I view my contribution as a small piece to continue improving the Big Moe.”

Fiessinger Family Scholarship Since Jimmy’s freshman year, the Fiessinger family has been very involved in Moeller activities. A key part of the involvement was creating the Fiessinger Family Scholarship. “Moeller has had an incredible impact on my family,” said Charlie. “Obviously, my brother Jimmy and I attended the school, but I think we’ll both say that was where we became the men we are today. We view our family’s scholarship as a very small way to pay back Moeller for everything it has given us and hope that Moeller will continue to evolve and improve its tremendous legacy.” Emerging Leaders are a vital segment of Moeller alumni. They constitute a cadre of recent graduates who support the opportunities Moeller provides and want others to share in that legacy. As they grow in their lives and careers, their support of their alma mater remains steadfast and grows as well. Many go on to become Marianist Society members and scholarship donors, thereby allowing the traditions of Moeller to continue for generations to come.

Brother Ron Luksic celebrates 50th Jubilee On Saturday, September 22nd over 400 family and friends gathered to honor Brother Ron Luksic and to celebrate his 50th anniversary as a Marianist brother.
Brother Ron’s impact on Moeller has been endless. Debbie Geiger recalls meeting Br. Ron in 1992 when he was an admissions director. Debbie was a Moeller parent who volunteered to run the Main Event. Together, she and Brother Ron created the tuition assistance paddle portion of the evening. Today Debbie and Brother celebrate the success of this program and the millions of dollars that have been raised. Brother Ron’s focus has always been on tuition assistance, and through his current role in advancement he’s been able to spearhead the named scholarship program. This program has started and funded over 80 named scholarships which has allowed many young men to attend Moeller. His Marianist commitment is part of everything he does at Moeller. He played a key role in starting Campus Ministry to elevate faith and spiritual growth among students and staff and helped to start the house system – an integral part of community and Marianist tradition at Moeller. To celebrate Brother Ron, his commitment to Moeller and his lifelong quest to make a Moeller education possible for every young man, an endowed scholarship was established in his name. Over $115,000 has been raised to date – certainly a testament to Brother Ron and his impact on others.

Support Moeller Charitable Giving
Through the generosity of alumni, parents, and friends, Archbishop Moeller High School is able to provide a quality Catholic education in the Marianist tradition to all of our students each year. There are many ways to make a gift to Moeller. Regardless of the method of giving you choose, please know that your gift is greatly appreciated, and that every dollar you give directly impacts the educational experience provided to the students at Archbishop Moeller High School.
Gifts for Current Programs Gifts of Cash: Moeller accepts gifts made with cash, or a debit/credit card. Gifts of Stocks or Bond: Making a gift with shares of stocks or bonds is a wonderful way to support our Mission, and helps avoid paying capital gains tax on the shares of stock used to make this gift. IRA Charitable Rollover: Gifts can be made directly to Moeller from your annual IRA distribution. Matching Gifts: Please check with your company’s human resources department to see if they will match your gift to Moeller – it’s a great way to increase the impact of your gift!
Gifts Planned for the Future There are many ways to support the Mission of Moeller High School through your estate: Bequest: A bequest is a gift made by a provision in your will or trust naming Archbishop Moeller High School as beneficiary. You can also include Moeller as a beneficiary of an existing life insurance policy, an IRA or other retirement plan. Charitable Gift Annuity: This gift allows the donor to receive income for his/her lifetime and qualify for a charitable tax deduction. Funding this type of gift with appreciated assets also allows the donor to avoid capital gains taxes on those appreciated assets. Charitable Remainder Trust: This form of support transfers assets to a trustee, who in turn manages the trust and pays an income back to the donor for life or for a specific time. When the trust terminates, the remainder passes to Moeller. Key benefits to the donor may include an income tax deduction, the avoidance of capital gains tax (when appreciated securities are used), as well as an estate tax reduction. Life Insurance: This gift names Archbishop Moeller High School as a beneficiary of an existing policy, or creates a new policy that names Archbishop Moeller High School as the owner and beneficiary of a life insurance policy – and the premiums may be a tax deductible gift.

As Moeller’s football coach, Gerry Faust was as fervent about his Roman Catholic faith as he was about the sport – perhaps even more so – and he never had any problem mixing his passions. That’s why the players on his 1975 Moeller football team weren’t surprised when Faust had them recite the Prayer to St. Jude, the patron saint of hopeless causes, before every practice. “I think it was good,” recalled Tim Koegel, the Crusaders’ junior quarterback. “We were pretty much open to anything Coach Faust suggested. I think back to that time, as far as being Catholic, he was the best possible coach we could have. We were always going to Mass and getting Communion after morning practice.” Faust started praying because Moeller had qualified for the Ohio High School Athletic Association Class AAA in 1973 and 1974, only to lose both years in the semifinals. Whether it was the prayers or simply their talent and coaching and experience, the Crusaders were able to qualify for the playoffs again in 1975 and, this time, capture the area’s first Class AAA (big school) state championship. That season’s Moeller team didn’t seem to be blessed with off-the-chart talent. Koegel, now a presentation coach who has written New York Times and Wall Street Journal bestselling books and operates The Presentation Academy in Annapolis, Mary., finished third in the area in passing yardage and fifth in passing points during the regular season. No Crusader running back gained more than the 559 yards rushing compiled by Steve Givens. Senior fullback Mike Burns added 443 and Bobby Massong finished with 343 while leading the team with 20 pass receptions for 339 yards. back Steve Givens, both part of the 1975 state championship team. Senior offensive guard Gary Cooper made the Associated Press Class AAA all-state second team, while Koegel was a third-team pick. Koegel suspects Faust’s coaching method was a major difference. “He wanted to be so tough on you that nothing on the field would intimidate you,” he recalled “In my sophomore year, he got on me really bad.” Koegel recalled an incident during the championship season when Faust’s intimidation backfired. Koegel and center Rob Wirthlin fumbled a snap on third down during the Princeton game. The Vikings recovered, leaving Faust even more upset. “When we were coming off the field, Rob and I were each taking the blame for the fumble,” Koegel recalled. “Coming from a program where you take responsibility and don’t make excuses, he said something like, ‘Sorry I messed up the snap,’ and I was saying something like, ‘No, I might have pulled out before I had the ball.’ Then we heard the screaming voice of Coach Faust and saw the anger on his face as he moved toward us, and asked, ‘Who’s fault was that?’ That’s when Rob and I simultaneously pointed at each other. “He had such a presence.” The balanced Crusaders finished the regular season undefeated to earn their sixth Enquirer coaches’ poll championship in seven seasons and capture a playoff bid for the third consecutive season in the fourth year of OHSAA-sponsored post-season play. In those days, each of four regional champions in three divisions qualified for the two-round playoffs, and Moeller met Findlay in the state semifinals at Dayton’s Welcome Stadium.
Senior linebacker John Bauer intercepted a Findlay pass at Moeller’s three-yard line and raced 97 yards for a touchdown that gave the Crusaders a 21-10 lead early in the fourth quarter. On Findlay’s next offensive play, Bauer came up with another interception on the Trojans’ 29-yard line, setting the stage for Massong’s six-yard touchdown run that clinched the 28-16 win. Moeller’s other touchdowns came on a Givens five-yard run and Koegel’s 38-yard touchdown pass to Dave Condeni.

The Eagles again went for two and, again, their pass fell incomplete. “If I had to do it all over again, you’d better believe I’d kick it,” St. Edward coach Mike Currence said. “You just watch next season. I’ll kick after every touchdown.” The Crusaders clinched their first title when sophomore linebacker Bob Crable fell on a St. Edward fumble at Moeller’s 18-yard line with 1:21 left in the game. What stands out in Koegel’s memory of that season is the close-knit senior class, one year ahead of his group.

Moeller almost didn’t make it to the game, Koegel said. “We got stopped in traffic, because there was a train Photo: Enquirer file photo stopped across the road,” he said. “Coach Faust went to the conductor and said, ‘Hey, we have players all ready to play for the state championship, and we’ve got to get to the stadium.’ The guy backed the train up. “They might have their schedules, but if they didn’t match his schedule, then you’ve got to move the train.”
“I remember as a freshman watching how well they played together and supported each other,” he said. “There were no real superstars. They were talented, but they weren’t All-Americans. “We weren’t a dominant team. We had to play each game. It was one of those years where we had to be ready every week, because we knew we weren’t that much better than whoever we were playing.” They were just good enough. St. Edward got on the board with a touchdown with 39 seconds left in the half, but the Crusaders’ pass rush forced the Eagles quarterback to throw an attempted two-point conversion pass into the ground. Bill Long’s interception set up Moeller’s second touchdown, a two-yard burst by Burns that capped a timeconsuming, 73-yard drive consisting of 11 consecutive running plays. Burns, Massong and Givens all took turns carrying the ball with Givens picking up 52 on seven carries on his way to a game-high 117 yards on 24 carries. Moeller’s ground-chewing attack allowed Koegel to have to throw the ball just nine times, completing four for 46 yards. Thirty Years of Selfless, Humble Service “He approached each day with enthusiasm, excited to tackle the variety of challenges Moeller presents. He always wanted to do things the right way, even if it took a little longer. He always had time to answer questions and provide direction, which was invariably colored with a history lesson.” – Nathan Beiersdorfer, Chief Financial Officer, colleague and friend. Besides steering one of Cincinnati’s largest private Catholic high schools through the sometimes turbulent waters of financial health, Bill Balbach’s mind houses the institutional history of Moeller. He was always quick to share it. And some of that history is his. “As a 1972 alumnus, some of my fondest memories of Moeller come from my time as a student. Although I was not an athlete, I was still included with the football team as a student trainer and participated with the basketball team as a statistician. I learned the importance of being a small part of something really big, no matter what role I played. This vision was consistently articulated by Football Coach Gerry Faust from the first days of the school. The dynamic is still in play to this day,” he said. Nathan Beiersdorfer, who has assumed Bills’s CFO position, knows he has big shoes to fill and is proud and thankful to have worked under Bill’s tutelage. “His career was marked by integrity, and a desire to do only what was best for Moeller,” he said. “His role evolved dramatically over the 30 years and he managed to keep the ship sailing during incredibly difficult times, while always trying to keep his own skill fresh and sharp. Bill was Moeller’s chief historian, knowledgeable about and friendly with just about every family who came through the doors.” Bill left the Hudepohl Brewing Company and began his career at Moeller in 1988 as business manager. As the school grew in the 1990s, Bill shepherded its financial health by implementing sound financial policies and controls and was named treasurer. He also embarked on a teaching career offering accounting classes for several years. Bill helped the school navigate a time of 42 • ARCHBISHOP MOELLER HIGH SCHOOL | ANNUAL REPORT 2018
both physical expansion and increasing enrollment in the 2000s, maintaining cash flow during hard times and keeping the school in sound financial shape. Bill was named treasurer and CFO in 2014. Bill noted that while not originally envisioned, “but developed as part of my years of experience and personal growth, I gradually transitioned my early focus from going after and collecting late tuition payments (to) partnering with families who needed some help to negotiate more palatable payment arrangements for their tuition commitments. Adopting that approach proved to become more helpful for our families as well as for our school — and, it felt better.” An Eagle Scout, Bill also holds a bachelor of business administration (BBA) in Finance, a BBA Certificate in Accountancy and an MBA, all from the University of Cincinnati. In 2016, Bill was awarded Moeller’s “Alumni Dad Award,” for his devoted service to the school and his family. “If you are lucky enough to be Bill’s ‘dear friend,’” Beiersdorfer said “He will walk to the end of the earth for and with you.” The Men of Moeller are grateful for Bill’s 30 years of selfless, humble service to the mission of his beloved school, and wish him all the best in a well-earned retirement. It promises to be busy and beautiful as he and his wife, Jayne, plan to visit many of the country’s 59 national parks, 14 presidential libraries, and 30 major league baseball parks. He has also been named to the board of directors of the OTR Brewery District Community Urban Redevelopment Corporation to help preserve and celebrate Cincinnati’s architectural assets that were the 35 breweries thriving more than 100 years ago. His great grandfather, Wilhelm Balbach, was brewmaster at Cincinnati’s John Hauck Brewing Company.
Thirty-three years of hard work and dedication “Greg , through his unique approach in the classroom, had this ability to connect, encouraged each student to take the leap, trust the process and to try something new.” – Jacquelyn Sommer, chair, Moeller Art Department, friend and colleague. In his 33 years of teaching and leading the Moeller Art Department, Greg Stanforth guided a program second to none in the Greater Cincinnati high school community. He has retired content in knowing so many of his students went on to careers in the world of art. Greg crafted a program averaging more than $3 million in collective scholarship offers – a program built on the elements and principles of art and design. In his students, he developed discipline and a strong work ethic. Greg fiercely believed in putting in the hours. His mantra of sorts: Anyone is capable of earning a top scholarship with hard work and dedication. “I had the pleasure of working with Greg Stanforth over the last six years,” said Jacquelyn Sommer, Greg’s colleague who has assumed his former position. “The core of our current curriculum was designed and implemented by Greg. It focuses on the elements and principals of design. Greg and I understood that drawing and special understanding were the key foundational pieces every student needed to know. Therefore, every assignment was designed to teach and reinforce those concepts. “While at Moeller, Greg documented much of the school’s history,” Sommer noted. “If there was a photograph taken, odds are good it was taken by Greg. He was committed — providing a rich educational experience for every student who walked into his classroom. A personal standard he held for himself was simply: Anything less than exceptional was not tolerated.”
Greg holds a Master of Arts in Art Education from the University of Cincinnati and a Master of Fine Arts from the Rochester Institute of Technology. He was honored as one of the 30 Most Admired Educators of 2014. “Greg Stanforth enabled me to remember to trust myself, push back when necessary and to always fight for what was best for our students,” Sommer continued. “Greg understood my strength and potential, before I did. The same can be said for how he understands his students. There were times when our guys were unsure of themselves, not sure if the rigor of our art program was for them. As a department, we supported our students when they were fearful and nervous about the next step in their art and in some cases their lives. “Greg pushed our students to accept nothing but their best. Greg has taught me what it takes to be a true Man of Moeller and, more specifically, what it means to be an “art guy” here at Moeller. To be a true Man of Moeller in the art department, you need to have work ethic, integrity, conviction, drive, perseverance and grit. “Without those qualities,” Sommer said, “we wouldn’t have been able to break (scholarship) records. Greg’s final year of teaching at Moeller was capped with our students earning a record scholarshipbreaking $2.5 million in collective offers.” All Men of Moeller offer their sincere thanks to one of the school’s most liked and memorable educators and friends.
