CRUSADERS TRIUMPH IN SEASON OPENER Friday, August 30, 1991, the Moeller Crusaders opened the 1991 high school varsity football season at Galbreath Field against Michigan's defending Division III State Champions Detroit Martin DePorres. The Crusaders won 2112 in a see-saw, hard-fought confront at ion. DePorres first dented the scoreboard halfway through the opening quarter as running back Charles Winter galloped 37 yards into the endzone. The two-point conversion attempt was unsuccessful and the Eagles led early 6-0. With 7:55 left in the season quarter, Moeller running back Ryan Jackson dove in from two yards out tying the score 6-6. Place kicker Erik Bryant added the go-ahead extra point and the Crusaders led at halftime, 7-6. Moeller's defense collected its first interception of the 1991 season. Cornerback Shawn Lucke made a spectacular grab for the pickoff early in the third quarter. Soon thereafter, the Eagles got the ball back after a missed field goal attempt. On this possession, DePorres promptly scored on Ron Ceustin's 62-yard pass reception. A twopoint conversion was attempted, but once again proved unsuccessful. At the end of the third quarter, the Eagles led 12-

GAME TWO - A MOELLER NEMESIS?? As the Moeller Varsity enters its 29th football season, it has only lost 26 regular season games. Curjously enough, six of those came in game two. The defeat this past Saturday at the hands of the Ramblers of Erie Cathedral Prep extends this tr2nd to seven of twenty-seven. Erie Prep 21, Moeller Crusaders 19 The home team got the first break on this rather muggy, but sunny afternoon when a blind-side hit on the Moeller QB caused the ball to pop loose. It was recovered by Erie at the Crusader 23 yardl ine. In one play (a play they would go to with regularity), the Ramblers swept in for a score. The conversion from placement was good and with 9:29 remaining in the first quarter, they led 7-0. The second possession for each team was uneventful, although Moeller did pick up a couple of first downs before punting. Following a Prep punt, the Crusader offense began at its own 45 yardline and drove down to the Erie 18. A nice mix of run and pass caused the Moeller hopeful to take renewed heart during this drive. On a 3rd and one, the Rambler defense made a big play and forced a 4th and one. It was at this point, that the Men of Moe suffered a very untimely 'delay of game' penalty. They failed to pick up the first down and Erie took over. Once again, the defense was up to the task and after three downs, the Ramblers punted. Agatn, the Crusaders began a nice drive from their own 27 yardline. Highlights of this drive included a nice 30 yard-plus run by Kelly Davis and a couple more receptions by Senior Co-Captain Jason Brown. This drive stalled out at the Rambler 27 and on 4th down, the Crusaders had to punt.

.,. F~llowing the touchback, the Prep squad began at its own 20. In three big plays, they moved to the Moe 28 yard 1 ine. From there, it took seven plays (four of which were identical calls), but with 1:11 to go in the first half, they punched in the score, converted and led 14-0. The offense still tried to rally; beginning at their own 19, they completed a pass to Jason Brown which carried to the Erie 34. Two additional plays produced no gain as time ran out in the first half. During the fifteen-minute intermission, the Moeller staff and players worked hard to find the proper adjustments to get back into this contest. After forcing the Erie squad to punt on its first possession, Moeller took over on its first possession. A quick first ¡down came on a pass to Jason Brown, another on a nice run by Davis. Facing a 3rd and long, Shawn Brennan escaped the Rambler pressure and fired a TD strike to Jeff Baur of 51 yards. The conversion attempt was wide to the right and the score stood at 14-6.

.Just about when the Moe 11 er sidelines were visualizing a 'patented' comeback, the Ramblers returned the ensuing kickoff 57 yards to the Moeller 44 yardline. Thjs fine effort re-ignited the Erie offense and they proceeded to tack on another score and conversion. With only six seconds remaining in the third quarter, the Crusaders were staring at a fifteen point deficit, 21-6. Undaunted, the offense took the ball at its own 15, following the kickoff and began a beautiful 85-yard TD march. Again, the drive featured some fine receptions by .Jason Brown and good running by Kelly Davis. The offense line was solid throughout this drive. The TD came on a nifty 8-yard strike to Brown. The very critical 2-point conversion was well defensed and the score stoorl at Erie 21, Moeller

DAVE BORMAN SENIOR

DT The first-up Crusader defense shut down the Prep attack and forced a punt on 4th down. This was blocked and the Moe offense took possession at the Erie 32 yardline. However, an interception on third down, gave the ball back to the Ramblers. Enter the Moeller defense. At this stage, this group was playing as hard as it could, so much so, that with a 3rd and 16 situation, Erie elected to punt. It was blocked again, Moeller recovered at the Erie 8 yardline. In one quick strike, Brown hauled in his 12th reception of the contest and his second TD. Fo llowt ng the conversion, Erie 21 Moeller 19 . The only remaining flicker of hope as only 1:17 remained in the game, was to recover an onside kick. It was not to be, Erie had 'its greatest victory ever' in the rdtO:(t'Jlq f.if ~ t ~ flf'i~f':.t),

I Crusader Golf The 1991 Golf season promises to be an exciting one for the Crusaders despite the loss of several key performers, the squad returns three starters who will form the nucleus of the team. The three players, Mike Cassity, Mike Stark, and Tom Yost are all juniors and will serve as tri-captains. All three had strong sophomore years. Tom had the squad's second lowest average and was named to the GCL All-Star team. Mike Cassity was a district qualifier and missed by three strokes of qualifying for State. Juniors Andy Dunlap, Jason Laub, and Paul Gessing are all seeking to make their impact on the varsity. Andy

had the low average on last year's junior varsity team. The schedule is once again one of the best in the City. League rivals St. Xavier and Elder will be the teams to beat in the GCL. Perineal state power Milford, along with Oak Hills, Hamilton, and Dayton Oakwood will provide tough non-league competition. Crusader Ice Hockey The 1990-91 season will go down as the greatest in Moeller history. The Hockey Crusaders advanced to the semi-final round of the State Tournament and on their way, garnered more wins than any other team at Moeller. Rob Empie, Mike Godar, Randy Homoelle, Eric Miller and Dave Raymer were the nucleus of a team that brought great honor and attention to our school. At the same time, these Seniors showed excellent leadership during the Championship season. The 1991-92 version of Moeller Hockey will be just as promising Look for Ted Cwiok, Matt Godar, Sam Mason, Jon Raymer, Rick Weast, and Ryan Westerfield to lead the way. Bryan Bardon, Brian Barrigan, Dan

Byerly, Joe Dyer, Nate Horvath, and . Tom Stout will add hustle and depth. No hockey team can do without a good goalie, and Andy Ralles will return to the net for his third year as a starter. Big things are expected of Andy. John Basalyga and Rob Lubanski are Co-Head Coaches this year. Coach Basalyga's philosophy and strategy will be the same as other years: be in shape, "Skate, Skate, Skate" and don't be afraid to take a man on, or the ice. Quickness, physical strength and power have marked the Moeller teams of the past With the large number of returning veterans, the 1991-92 season will be no exception. Coach Lubanski will be directing the offense again this year. Coach Lubanski has shown himself to be an

outstanding tactician of the game of hockey. The team will be playing as tough a schedule as they can fmd in order to prepare for the state playoffs. The team has the outstanding support of the Moeller Student Body. Our fans have proved to be our "man up advantage" on many occasions. We hope to see you at the Northland Ice Arena beginning in November. You can also catch the games live on radio or in retelecast on Access Cable Television. Or support the team by becoming a hockey patron in our outstanding ad book. And don't miss the excitement of the third annual Moeller Alumni All-Stars versus the varsity held late in December.

I Crusader Swimming & Diving The success of the season for these young men will depend heavily upon the turn out of new faces. The program has suffered a very significant drop off in numbers in the last few years. We are very optimistic that we will be able to bring our total participation up to the 18-20 norm. On the positive side, the diving program will be returning all three members. Leading that unit will be Senior Jason Glorius (a 3-time State Qualifier). Classmate Scott Lambert, as well as Sophomore Fletcher Cundall, are rates as 1992 State Qualifiers as well. The swimming phase will be in good hands as Seniors Eric Murphy, Matt Reynolds, and Dave Moeggenberg will provide continued excellent performance and leadership. Juniors Pat Abell, Jamie Case, Alex Lang and Randy Mayne will continue to provide significant help as well as Frank D'Andrea and Dave Mulshine.

CROSS COUNTRY - The Varsity placed third at the Harrison Invitational. Outstanding performances ¡were turned in by Junior Robb Trapp C3rd), Senior Doug Kohls C9th) and Junior Mike Jordan ClOth) ......... . Freshmen came in 4th with Gus Hartman placing 9th and Brandt Schroeder finishing lOth. SOCCER - The Varsity lost to Elder 1-0 and their record is now 2-4-1, 2-3-1 in the GCL. Terry Knecht, who had battled for the kicking job as a walk-on, won a kick-off during the week with the scholarship starter. His 39-yard field goal and equally critical extra point were obviously also very timely coni: ri but ions.

1991 GRADS GRAB SOME HEADLINES On SAturday, October 5th, Carlos Collins had a fine performance for the University of Kentucky against Kent State. He gained 66 yards rushing in just 9 carries as he was the Wildcat 's leading rusher. He also caught two passes. Teammate ~nd fellow Moeller grs.duA.te Steve Langenkamp has been getting a 'taste' of the collegiate action in this first year also. A week later in the small town of Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, classmate Neil Dougherty and Terry Knecht rallied the Miami Redskins to a 10-10 tie with Central Michigan. Nei 1 had been laboring in the background as the 4th quarterback and running the scout team unit. A series of unforeseen events unfolded, culminating with a shoulder injury to the starting QB Jim Clements late in the first half and Neil was 'the man'. He completed 8 of 14 passes for 79 yards and brought the team back from a 10-3 deficit.

The Reserve Football Team lost it's first game of the season to Fairfield 7-6. This had to be one of the hardest hitting games on this level in a long time. The offense was led by Mark Hilvert who had the Crusaders' only score. Mark played both tailback and flanker in this game. Defensively, the Reserves were led by middle linebacker Troy Tuck who actually collapsed after the game from the heat and total exhaustion. Also for the defense, Chris Brisben had a key interception. FACTS

Touching bases: An interesting article in a recent Sports Illustrated had significant Moeller overtones. The article itself focused on the basic logic that goes into starting up a major league franchise. In a poll of the GMs in both the National and American Leagues, the most cri t ica 1 question was 'If you were starting a franchise from scratch and could pick any current player in your league as the first player or the cornerstone of your club, who would your choice be'路 The National GMs choose Barry Larkin, MHS '81. The American GMs choose Ken Griffey, Jr., MHS '87. Congratulations to both and hats off to the General Managers for their choices. Moeller Senior Jason Glorius was notified in the early summer that his diving accomplishments during his junior year had merited him All-American status. Jason has been a state qualifier during each of his three years at Moeller. He is projected as a top six perfomer in this year's state competition. Dave Bell, MHS '90, has enjoyed a very so 1 id and productive second season of professional baseball. At Class 'A' Columbus, Georgia, he is batting about 250 plus with 5 HR, 23 Dbls, and 65 RBis. He will be home for about five days beginning on Friday, Sept. 6. Adam Hyzdu, MHS '90, is also completing his second season with a BA of about 235 and modestly productive HR and RBI stats.. . It has been a period of cont1nu1ng adjustment for Adam, but the ~an Francisco organization rema1ns highly supportive of their number one draft choice. continued
