Moeller, 1976
The statistics don't lie when it comes to picking what some might argue to be the best high school team Greater Cincinnati has ever seen. Coach Gerry Faust's Crusaders scored 490 points in 10 games, while yielding just 40. And that was with seven juniors starting on defense. Moeller finished first in the final AP poll, and beat Gahanna Lincoln 43-5 in one of the most lopsided state championship games. In the state semifinal game the week before, the Crusaders crushed Youngstown Mooney the AP's No.2 team- by a 48-0 score. "We lined up in the same defensive scheme on every snap," said Bob Crable, a linebacker who went on to play for Notre Dame and the New York Jets. "It was nothing fancy back then. We just outmanned whomever it was that we played." Quarterback Tim Koegel opened up the team's offense by throwing the ball consistently well to receivers Dave Condeni and Bobby Massong.

Picking an all-city team isn't an enviable job but, at least in this case, going against annual tradition and selecting a linebacker player of the year wasn't a trying decision. Moeller's Bob Crable, who never tasted defeat while leading Moeller to three straight state titles, is the first full-time defensive player to be named The Enquirer's player of the year, heading a star-studded lineup which include five of his teammates on the first teams. , Wyoming's Bob Lewis, who coached his way through the state AA playoffs with a·team he admitted didn't have the personnel of some of his previous squads, is The Enquirer's coach of the year. Lewis has earned that honor twice before, .and to give you an idea of how long he's been around, the last time he received th~ honor was 1962.

ooney 's Best Bid Falls Inches Short Moeller Tullies On First Possession While Moeller's attack enjoyed success on the ground and through the air, Mooney encountered a miserable situation all night. The Cards were able to get past midfield only three times in the game. Moeller let it be known early in the first period it packed a powerful arsenal. On its first possession, the CruI saders qrove 55 yards in ll plays to ring up a 7-0 advantage. Good field position fol-. lowing Dave Bucci's 17 yard punt gave Moeller possession on its 45. In 11 plays, they hit paydirt, the husky Givens going a yard to cap the maneuver. Enroute, Tim Koegel, Moeller's 6-5, 190pound AU-Ohio quarterback, set up the marker with a 27yard strike to Steve Puthoff to Mooney's three. A couple of penalties against . Mooney shoved the pigskin to within a foot of the goal prior to Givens' dash. Minutes later, Moeller in~ creased its advantage to 14-0, l taking control at Mooney's 49 .·following Dave Bucci's 18: yard punt which allowed for , good f1eld position again. i Koegel, who has been ! sacked only twice attempting ; to pass all season. found little harassml:'nt from the Mooney defense as his offensive line provid<'d him fantastic protection.
In Moeller's second to movement, Givens and speedy Bob Massong ripped off eight yard gains for a first down to the Mooney 33. Koegel rifled a pass to Kirby Clark to the 28, where an unsportsmanlike call against Mooney added 15 more ·yards to the 13. From that point, Massong reeled left, hustling past two Mooney defenders for the touchdown. Ken Naber, a most-accurate kicker, made it 14-0, the clock showing 2:25 left in the opening period.
Moeller, hit with 11 penalties for 115 yards during the night, had one of the major infrac· tions put Mooney in contention for a short whlle. ; Bucci, attempting to punt from deep in his own territory again, got off a boot to the 43. lBut, he was roughed up follow!ing the kick, Mooney advancing with first down activity at the33. . · From there, the Cards put together their best series of the night. A Jeff Bruno pass to Bob Stoops accounted for 13 yards to the Moeller 45. A face-mask penalty against Moeller col-· lected 15 more to the 26. Jack Loew, called .by the Moeller coach as one of the finest runners he's seen all year, cracked through for a big 18 yard gain to the eight, After Joe Croft lost a yard, Loew rammed to the Moeller five. Bruno appeared to be in. for a score on a "keepft"' call, but got ruled down just inches short. On fourth down, Croft attempted to hit the middle, bu~ got stuffed, That was it for M90ney. ·.·our goal. line stand eoukll ,~e been· .the · itel)l that\ ' -.mornetltUJn back 1 us," Faust said following the 1game. Discussing the same situaon, Bucci said, "We lost all r momentum when we dn't score. It might have en a better game if we had," ended. . 1

Moeller Scores Third Touchdown
1
Midway in the period, Moeller got possession again following Mark Wilson's fumble after catching a pass from Bruno. Moeller. took over at the Mooney 48 and behlnd Koegel's tosses, ran the margin to 21-0. Koegel hit Puthoff for 17 to the 13 and.after reaching the Mooney eight, found Puthoff open in the end zone for the score. This came with 4:31 to go in the half. "Believe me, 21-0 is not a safe lead against a good football team. And, I have a ·Jot of respect for Don Bucci's coaching, We were going to go hard in that se.cond half," Faust had stated. And hard they went. So hard and so fast, in fact, that they scored three more touchdowns and shut off Mooney the only two times the Cards had the ball. When the firing ceased, Moeller had itself a41-0 edge. Steve Givens registerd following the second half kickoff to culminate a 65-yard drive. Dave Condeni hauled in a short· eight-yard toss from Koegel that upped the margin to 35-0 and Givens showed why he should possibly be AIIOhlo on a nine-yard TD jaunt with just 18 seconds left in the third frame. On hls run, Givens got hit by four Mooney defenders, shaking them off to reach the end zone. The three touchdowns tied ·him for the playoff single game record set by Mike Spiva of Warre~ Reserve and Ted Bell, the 1\.uoney ace in 1973 who sing!e-handedly destroyed the Moeller team in semifinal action in Cincinnati. In the fourth period, with Moeller subs on the scene, Mooney managed to cross midfield on two occasions. But, both times bids to avoid the shutouf failed at the Moeller 27 and 30 yard stripes. MMMY
