paper tigers? Choice in DII-111; Milford given nod over Mason in DI I

By Tom Ramstetter tramstetter@enquirer. com

Local ·coaches had no trouble overlooking a somewhat ordinary finish for the Summit Country Day boys' soccer program last season. With a wealth of talent and every starter returning, the Silver Knights had been voted No.1 in the Divisions II-III preseason coaches' poll. "On paper we have an unbelievably talented team," coach Barnard Baker said. "Hopefully that translates well on the pitch." The Silver Knights finished in third place last season in the Miami Valley Conference with a 5-1-1 league record and a 10-5-1 overall record. If that is to improve and Summit Country Day is to live up to the early expectations, the area's leading scorer will have to match his contributions from a year ago. Junior Alex Priede scored 31 goals to go with 10 assists in 2007 and was named to the All-Southwest "Ohio team. Priede played mostly as a defender as a freshman two years ago, but was moved to striker in 2007 and flourished. Priede will be joined by All-Ohio :first-teamer senior Dan Dwyer, AllSouthwest Ohio senior· Henry Meininger, sophomore Jude Austin and transfer Joe Colak, a senior who was a first-team all-state performer last season in Vermont. Seven Hills, Mariemont, CHCA and Madeira round out the top five.

Division I Milford: Coach Brian Croston said his team should be one of the top two or three teams in the region and local coaches agree, voting the Eagles No. 1 in the Division I preseason coaches' poll, just ahead of Mason. Croston welcomes back senior keepers Ryan Grothaus and Tommy George to mind the net. Also returning are senior midfielder Ben Jones and senior forwards Nathan Hudson and Tyler Huerkamp. Mason: All-area senior midfielder Zach Patterson returns with four other starters for the second-ranked Rockets. · Seniors Jordan Grant and Mike McKinley will join Patterson in the middle while senior defender Andy

Cook and junior forward Caleb Eastham also return. But there will be holes for Paul Reedy's team to fill. "(We) graduated 12 seniors last year on a tremendous team," Reedy said. "Players who came off the bench and played JV last year must step up for the team to be able to contend for the league title." Elder: The Panthers welcome back five starters from last season's regional and Greater Catholic League South champions, led by four-year varsity letterman Jimmy Rice, a senior mid:fielder. Also back for Matt Ruehl's club are senior forward Steve Schaefer, a three-year varsity letterman, senior defender Brian Rusche, senior mid:fielder Zac Sergent and junior forward Chad Thornton. "Expectations · outside of our team are not as high as the past two years and we have taken some lumps in the preseason, but we still set our goals quite high and will continue to build on the winning culture we have had the last two seasons," Ruehl said. "We will be a hard-nosed, tough team that will be difficult to score on with speed up top that will keep opposing defenses honest

Wmners and losers have been hard to come by recently when Moeller and St. Xavier face off in soccer. 路 Goals have been almost as rare.

But on Saturday, the Bombers needed just one, and they got it from Robert Ortner to defeat the Crusaders 1-0 at St. Xavier's Ballaban Stadium. The Crusaders and Bombers tied in their three previous matches over the last three seasons. The previous two matches have

finished knotted at 1, and the teams were scoreless in 2005. The two teams once again air peared to be on the ;yay to a scoreless tie Saturday night - until Ortner found himself with the ball 10 yards in front of the Moeller goal and only Crusaders goalkeeper Daniel Noel to beat The St. Xavier senior, who had taken a skidding indirect kick from junior Nicholas Crowley, fired the ball into the iower left comer of the net to give the Bombers the victory- the first actual decision in the series since St. Xavier's 2-0 win over Moeller at home in 2004. 'Thafs exciting," Ortner, a forward, said. "It shows that it's a team thing. We held together as a team." Said Moeller coach Randy Hur: ley: "Give St. Xavier credit. They played hard and made the play

when they needed to." The Bombers (7-3-2, 5-0-2 Greater Catholic League), leaJr frogged over the Crusaders, (73-2, 5-1-1) into first place by a halfgame in the GCL's South Division. 'We have high expectations," said St Xavier coach Henry Ahrens, whose team hasn't won an undisputed league championship since 2002. 'We want to get back to contending for the league championship every year. There's along way to go. We have four matches left, and they're all tough ones." 路 Saturday's match featured two teams that were rolling. St. Xavier, the No. 6 team in the Enquirer Division I area coaches' poll, was (H)..2 in its previous eight matches after losing its first three of the season. Moeller. unranked in the Enquirer preseason poll,

had moved up to No. 10 while going (H)..1 in its previous seven matches after a 1-2-1 start. Each team managed one shot on goal in the first half, but the Bombers were able to maintain more pressure offensively, earning three comer kicks to none for the Crusaders. But all of St. Xavier's scoring chances fizzled out, primarily because of Noel's talent for cutting off centering passes before they lead to shots. "For a while toward the end of the first half, we started jamming it in there," Ortner said. "We go tit back together in the second half." The play was more balanced in the second half, but Moeller still was able to squeeze off only one shot on goal for the game, helping Bombers senior goalkeeper John Feister log his third shutout of the season.
