NEW COACH, NEW SEASON FOR MOElLER SOCCER ~sp-r ,, 88,

•with a 5-11-1 season last year, Moeller's new head soccer coach Randy Hu;rley is proud that his team has gone 5-0 during its pre-season.

"The soccer program has struggled .for three· or four years ... we haven't had. a winlling season in (a while)," he explained.

Hurley has been coaching soccer since 1975. He was an assistant coach at Lakota High School from 1983 to 1986Then he spent last year at Mason High School as head coach. Additionally, Hurley is a district coach for the Olympic Development Program.

Senior midfielders Brian Bonham and Shawn Pierce, sophomore midf1elder Scott Schaepher, and stopper Dave Guller, senior, are among the Crusaders' strong team members. Junior Mike McMillan, goal 1keeper,-has transferred from Sycamore to Moeller.. "He's made a big difference already,"' Hurley said.

"We have the potential to have a winning season, and to have a top ten program (in the city)."--

Moeller toasts its top season

The Moeller soccer· team held its awards banquet Nov. 13, toasting the team's best season ever under the leadership of coach Randy Hurley of Mason.

Hurley completed his first year as Moeller's head soccer coach, compiling a record of 13-4-2 including a 6-2-2 reeord in the GLC for a second-place finish in the league. .

Hurley earned honors as the Southwest Ohio Soccer Coaches Association District Coach of the Year <East). He has also been named as the East all-star coach.

A number of players were honored with specific awards: · • M!>st Valuable Player: Brian Bonham <Mason). Bonham was one of the captains of the soccer team and was the leading scorer with 19 goals and seven assists. He also was named to the GLC allstar team and the Southwest Ohio Soccer Association .<SWOSCA> all-district team and the Cincinnati Post ali-city team.

"It's a fantastic organization!" he said.

Working with .the first group- to come in to the program is "unique. They are kind of wideeyed at first... then they wonder if they're good enough ... it's -interesting to watch them develop."

-Hurley has experienced a challenge in a different way.

'You're working with the 18 most developed players in an age group ... it's exciting to watch ... (iri the under 17 group) they can do more, and you can do more with them," he stated.

At the tryout the coaches look seriously at all the players. If one coach believes a player is exceptional. but the other coaches· graded ·the player above average, the coaches discuss the difference of opinion. One coach may see potential in a player that the other coaches did not. ''There is a lot 'of communication between the coaches," Hurley reassured. · Many of the young men who make the national team go on to play at he Olympics. Rob Martella, a Turpin. senior, was invited to train with the vational team last year. .

The men's world cup will be played in the United States in 1994. It's the 'World Series of Soccer," described Hurley.
