GlenOak's Hanson 2nd in event; Xavier, Hawken team victors ByBETHSHEBOY Cincinnati St. Xavier's Aquabombers outswam all contenders as the team won back the state title after a two-year absense while Gates Mills Hawken took the girls crown here Saturday in the state high school swimming and diving championships at the C.T. Branin Natatorium. The 18 boys competing for Xavier scored 248 points to regain the crown the school had held for an Ohio prep record 12 consecutive years. Akron Firestone slipped in and won it last year and in 1982. Firestone finished fourth Saturday with 85 points behind Upper Arlington with 115 and Worthington with 109. GlenOak's boys were 12th while North Canton tied for 17th with Fremont Ross. Two other state records fell in the

evening finals program before a record crowd of more than 2,500 spectators. Three youngsters, Rod Bowman of Dayton Wayne, Aimee Berzins of Centerville and Kim Rodenbaugh of Cincinnati Oak Hills, won two events each. Kim Hanson of GlenOak (which was fifth in the team standings) and Patty Schuld of Perry (which was 12th) were the only Stark Countians to reach the championship finals. Hanson, a senior, was second in the 100 freestyle with her best time of 51.15 behind Berzins, who clocked 50.50.

Hanson qualified with a third finish in the morning preliminaries with a time of 51.82. Berzins also edged Hanson in Friday's 50 freestyle. The other double wins were by Bowman, who won Saturday's but· terfly in 49.97 and set a state record Friday in the 200 freestyle, and Rhodenbaugh, who won the breaststroke in 1:03.88 having set a record Friday in the individual medley. Schuld, a junior, qualified in sixth place in the 100 butterfly and finish· ed there in the evening finals with a time of 59:08: Her morning time was 58:50.

The Aquabombers scored in all 11 events and ended the two-day meet with a record-setting swim in the 400 freestyle relay. Mark Jechura, T.J. Anderson, El-B Bourgraf and George Rathman bad a half-pool length on all the other squads in the finals, clocking a record 3:05.14. The old mark was 3:07.10 set by Akron Firestone in 1983.
