Moeller's far-flung swim program Lack of pool no barrier to excellence

With the exception of traditional powerhouse St. Xavier, Moeller has more talented swimmers than any team in the city and is ranked second behind the Aquabombers.

That in itself may not seem too overwhelming, but consider (1) Moeller has no home pool and (2) Moeller's "committee of coaches" don't see the' best Moeller swimmers until the day of the meet.

Because Moeller has no pool, most of its top swimmers practice at the Blue Ash YMCA, where they can get in two-a-day workouts.

Those swimmers who do not practice at the Blue Ash Y practice at St. Xavier's Keating Natatorium under the direction of Lynn Marggrander arid Ann Schoenberger.

Dick Beerman, who coached Moeller from 1977-82, is the program's coordinator.

Top senior swimmers Scott Gregory, Tim Morrissey, Scott Egbers, Kevin Bach and Ron Matanguihan swim at the Blue Ash Y under the direction of Mike Stewart.

"We just can't offer them the pool time that they can get at Blue Ash," Beerman said.

"Mike Stewart works closely with Lynn and Ann," Beerman !>aid. "He comes to our meets and helps set our lineups. They would not get into anything like a stroke correction before consulting Mike first."

Prep swimming But as Morrissey noted, "sometimes during meets, Lynn and Ann will notice little things that we're doing wrong and tell us."

Marggrander and Schoenberger also coach Ursuline's swim team.

Both would like a more nearly ideal coaching situation, including a home pool for Ursuline and Moeller, but neither minds too much a setup that's in its second year.

"It's been workable," Marggrander said. "(The coaches) communicate well. It's not an ideal situation by a long shot, but the kids have really adjusted well and it has worked.

"We see the (Blue AshY) swimmers every so often to get together and go over what the schedule is· and talk about team goals," Marggrander said.

Seniors Gregory, Morrissey, Egbers and Bach are the heart of the Crusaders' team. · Egbers has the city's best times . in the 200 freestyle (1 minute, 58.21 seconds) and the 500 freestyle, 4:51.54. Gregory has the city's best time in the 100 freestyle (:48.20), while Morrissey has the third-best. time in the 100 · butterfly at :53.61.

Equally as important is the uncommon depth Moeller has· this year.

"We are a good two-deep at every event except maybe the 100 backstroke," Beerman said. "This just happened to be a real good senior class. The kids realize how good they are and that made them want to work that much harder to be successful. l' think they have all pushed each other."

Despite having swimmers and divers spread throughout the city (diver Matt Borman practices under the tutelage of Charlie Casuto at UC), Morrissey said they still have a "team attitude."

"We might not all practice together, but we see each other in school," he said, "and we are all swimming for Moeller."
