Howell Maaler's first champ since 1989 While he was the favorite in the 20Q-yard individual medley going into the state swimming championship last weekend, Moeller's Brian Howell wasn't sure where that would leave him following the race. 'I was kind of surprised that I won the state championship, just because I thought that Jared Miller would go a little faster,' said Howell of the Lakota East swimmer who finished third in the event 'So ifs pretty exciting.' Howell, of Evendale, captured the individual state title in the event with a time of 1:51.91, just.04 seconds ahead of second-place finisher Jake Epperson of Toledo St John's Jesuit Howell, a junior, becomes the first Moeller swimmer to capture a state championship since Steve Busse won the 50-yard freestyle event in 1989. '(Howell) was a little off last week's time at the districts, but he swam a really strong race~ Moeller head coach Bill Whatley said. 'He was seeded first going in, we were just hoping he would be able to hold that position.' Howell also finished ninth overall in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:36.37. He was also a member of the 400-yard freestyle relay team along with Michael Krone, Kevin Koenig and Joe Albers that finished 14th overall. Albers also continued his improvemen~ finishing 14th overall in the 1ooyard breaststroke. His time of 1:00.83 was a personal best

'He had a great weekend~ The Crusaders finished the meet in 17th place overall. Howell says by winning the championship this season, he is more motivated to repeat going into his senior year. 'There is going to be some great competition coming back so I'm going to have to get even better,' Howell said. 'If I would have gotten second, with the time I swam I would've beeA pleased, but ifs nice to win.' The Mount Notre Dame swim team saw improvements in the times of both of the relay teams. The 200 and 400yard freestyle relay teains of Annie Johnson, Megan Nunan, Kim Recinena and Emily Creevy placed 20th overall in each event. All four swimmers wiH retum for the Cougars next year. 'It was great experience getting all of them up (to Canton)~ said Whatley, who also coaches the Mount Notre Dame team. 'They should all improve for next year.' CANfON - It's hard to argue against the suggestion that St Xavier swimming coach Jim Brower deselVes to be honored with a building named after him. Brower officially became the most successful swimming coach in Ohio history Saturday night when St Xavier won the boys' Division I state title at C.T. Branin Natatorium in Canton. The Aquabombers finished first with 250 points, followed by St Charles Preparatory School (177) and Columbus Upper Arlington (162). The win marks St Xavier's ninth consecutive state championship 29th overall - and Brower's 14th state title as the Aquabombers' coach. Brower broke a tie with former Canton McKinley coach Ted Branin, for whom the building that hosts the state meet is named, for most state championships. "It's great You never take anythiru! for mmted." Brower said.

"The guys work so hard. It's just nice to be able to do it every year." Brower, though, was humble as usual when asked about breaking the record for state titles won by a swimming coach. "It's pretty insignificant compared to everything we've done," he said. "I think the big story is David Mosko breaking the state record (111 the 500 yard freestyle). The guy whose record he beat was a gold medalist in the last Olympics." Mosko. a senior. broke Dan

She finished with a score of 432.85. Millbury uike senior Brittany Teneyck won the championship with a score of 457.55. "She was disappointed after prelims because she was fifth," Monroe diving coach Diane Wilson said of Brehm. "After that, she really stepped it up, and her last three dives were phenomenal." Wilson credited Brehm, who placed third at state as a freshman, with renewing her focus after the slow start. ''I was very proud of her," Wilson said. ''I think if she keeps working on what she is doing, she will be fine. The judges I have talked to throughout the season have said she is continuing to improve. I also think she has to continue to get stronger and more determined." Wilson is confident that Brehm will be making her fourth state trip next February. ''I already told the people at the Holiday Inn in Canton, 'We will see you next year; she will be back,' " Wilson said. Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy Results, C2

"I didn't even realize I broke the record," Howell said. "I figured it was like a 1:49 or something. I wasn't thinking about breaking the record -just winning the race." The bt>ys' and girl's Division II district meet is scheduled to conclude with diving Sunday at Miami after being postponed from the middle of the week because of inclement weather. The girls' diving starts at 3 p.m., followed by the boys' diving. "I was happier with what Brian Howell did," said Spraul, referring to his teammate on the Cincinnati Marlins. Howell lopped more than six seconds off last week's sectional time of 1:56.97 and more than three seconds off his previous personal best of 1:55.00. "It was a good combination of a great taper and working hard," said the Crusaders junior, who qualified for last year's state meet in the 200 IM and 500 free. "Last year, my (butterfly) was a little weak, and I've been working hard on thal" Moeller coach Bill Whatley said he wasn't surprised. "I think he's gotten better all around," Whatley said. and Mike Dyer mdyer@enquirer.com
The 2006-07 Southwest sectional boys' swimming meet begins today and is the start of St. Xavier's quest for its ninth consecutive state title. '1 think the guys are ready," St. Xavier coach Jim Brower said. '1 think they're as ready as any team I've had." There are 104 teams competing at two venues, St. Xavier and Mason. St. Xavier, Princeton, Lakota East and La Salle are favored in the St. Xavier sectional. · St. Xavier's David Mosko and Jim Barbiere, Lakota East's Jared Miller and Princeton's Doug Spraul are individual favorites. Top teams at the Mason sectional are Greater Miami Conference champion Sycamore and Fort Ancient Valley Conference Buckeye

'1 would say that the focus for this weekend is just to get to next weekend," Ursuline coach Tun Beerman said. 'We want to focus on keeping people healthy and keeping them racing...!Yell."
Notebook e.- ct - e> 1 The favorite in the Mason Division I sectional is Mason, with freshman Danielle Jansen leading the way. Anderson and Sycamore also look strong. Mariemont and Indian Hill head the competitors in the Mason Division n sectional. WRESruNG: Reading coach Dick Engel doesn't mess around when it comes to preparing his Blue Devils for the Cincinnati Hills League meet. As part of tradition during league championship week, Reading holds a 6:30 a.m. practice each day. It seems to work - Reading has won 11 of the past 21 CHL titles. The Blue Devils won the league last season, with 14 wrestlers achieving topfour finishes. "The league is the No. 1team goal every year," Engel said. Fmneytown al!d Madeira are ex-
pected to challenge Reading at the CHL meet, which begins at 10 am. Saturday at Taylor. • Lakota West is the clear favorite at the Greater Miami Conference meet, which begins at 9:30 am. Saturday at Oak Hills. The finals begin at6p.m. • The Greater Catholic League tournament begins at 10 am. Saturday at St. Xavier, with the finals at 4 p.m. Moeller has won the past four Greater Catholic League South titles, and Roger Bacon has won the past two North titles. •The Fort Ancient Valley Conference tournaments will begin at 10 am. Saturday and will be held at Wmton Woods (Buckeye Division), Amelia (Cardinal Division) and Norwood (Scarlet Division). Harrison (Buckeye) and Ross (Cardinal) are defending champions. • Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy, Cincinnati Country Day and
North College Hill are expected to vie for the Miami Valley Conference title when that meet begins at 10 am. Saturday at CCD. • The Southwest Ohio Public League meet begins at 10:30 am. Saturday at Dayton Dunbar. Dunbar gets the nod as favorite for the league title. GYMNASTICS: Lakota East won the Anderson Invitational Feb. 3, setting school record with 137.625 points. It was the highest score by a local team this season. "Breaking the record was huge for us,"· Lakota East coach Margi Sammons said. "But as high as that was, there are still so many skills that the girls are working on in practice that will raise their scores even higher. So we also have a lot of room for improvement" Lakota East, the top-ranked team in the Enquirer poll, beat 15 teams at the invitational, including No. 2 Turpin and No. 3 Mason.

The diving championships will be held Monday at Miami University, and the swimming championships take place Wednesday at St. Xavier's Keating Natatorium. Classic gives St. X, other swimmers postseason gauge By Joe Rudemiller jrudemiller@enquirer. com
In the 23-year history of the Southwest Ohio High School Swimming and Diving Classic, there has been only one boys' champion, St. Xavier The Bombers look to defend their title as the Classic takes place this weekend, and the sheer size of the meet means lots of competition for the defending champions. "Centerville has a good team, as always, and Mason and Sycamore are good," St. Xavier head coach Jim Brower said. "But the primary focus isn't so
much on the team aspect as it is getting individuals into the finals. This format mirrors the state championship format so I think it's a good way to gauge where guys are at." Started in 1984, the Classic has grown into the largest high school swimming and diving invitational in the United States. More than 100 schools and 2,700 swimmers and divers will participate. Preliminaries are being held at seven locations. The finals will take place Sunday at St. Xavier's Keating Natatorium. BOYS'BASKETBALL:Thesecond annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Classic will be played Mon-
day at Xavier University's Cintas Center. Three games are scheduled, beginning with Clark Montessori vs. Shroder at 1 p.m., followed by Hughes vs. North College Hill at 3 p.m. and Withrow, ranked No. 8 in the Enquirer Division I area coaches' poll, takes on No.9 Winton Woods at 5 p.m. The event is hosted by the Cincinnati Public Schools StudentActivity Foundation. ''Thisisimportantbecauseit'sa venue for kids to participate in athletics," foundation executive director Brian Leshner said. "But we include the essay con· test and dedication because we
feel there should be an educational component to the event and an understanding that there is a reason for this day, and that reason is to honor Dr. King." GYMNASTICS: Cincinnati Country Day hosted the Indian Cup on Jan. 6, and as expected, the meet was extremely close. Clayton Northmont won the team title with a score of 132.35, but the top six teams were separated by just three points. Turpin's Kristen Frooman won the individual title witli an allaround score of 35.2. Frooman won two events, bar (9.0) and floor (9.125), and finished second in another, vault (8.475).
BOWLING: On Jan. 4, McAuley's Andrea Dollenmeyer rolled a 429 two-game series in a win o-q-er Purcell Marian, and Amelia's Chris Pfaffroth had a 516 series 41 a win over McNicholas. Pfaffroth followed that performance with a 494 against little Miami on Tu'esday. Also Tuesday, St. Xavier freshman Chris Weber had a 507 series as the Bombers narrowly def~at ed Colerain 2,897-2,865. Elder's Craig Sherrill leads ,all local bowlers with a 229 averag~ this season. Wilmington's Katie Hale ha.s .a 194 average to lead all area girls.

St. Xtunes up with dual meets· against top programs By Joe Rudemiller jrudemiller@enquirer.com
The St. Xavier swimming and diving team kept busy over its holiday break, hosting University School from Shaker Heights on Dec. 27 in what has become a Christmas tradition for the schools. For the past five years, University School has made the trip to Cincinnati for a dual meet with its cross-state counterpart. "lf.s usually a pretty good day for everyone involved," St. Xavier coach Jim Brower said. 'They're one ofthetopteams in Ohio, so it's nice to get together and have a

good workout and then have a dual meet." On Dec. 30, the Bombers continued another tradition when they Brower faced one o~ the top programs m Kentucky - Louisville St. Xavier. "We've been getting together for 14 or 15 years now," Brower said. 'They're the perennial Kentucky state champions. We're teams that are similar in size and
tradition." Despite the rivlj!ry and tradition in those two meets, Brower sees St. Xavier's local opponents as the best tune-up for the postseason. "Our best competition is right here at home," he said. "In Cincinnati, we face the best opponents in the state from an individual standpoint." GIRLS' BASKETBALL: New Miami's Amberly Rison was the first of multiple area girls' basketball players to reach 1,000 career points this season. The senior guard topped the mark in her sixth game, a loss to Cincinnati Country Day on Dec. 16. Turpin senior Jess Slonim
followed suit five days later, scoring her 1,000th point in a 52-34 win over Clermont Northeastern. BOWLING: Among the early highlights of the newly sanctioned sport are a 298 game rolled by La Salle sophomore Kyle Scott and a 533 two-game series bowled by North College Hill's Kyle Black. Two of the leading girls' bowlers are Oak Hills' Lauren Stoffel and McAvley's Amy Wormus. Both girls have a 200 average this season. GYMNASTlCS: Area gymnasts have their first meet since the holiday break Saturday. The winner of the Indian Cup, hosted by Cincin-
nati Country Day, could be any . team because of the parity in this. season's field. 'This is going to be a very inter- ;· esting year, because this is the • most balance I've seen between·· · teams in my 13 years of coaching," Anderson coach Stacey Bailey . said. While the teams are on equal. footing, Turpin's Kristen Frooman · stands out as a threat to take the individual crown. "She brings everything to theta-· ble. She practices hard and she performs hard," Turpin coach Gail · Maundrell said. "She is a competitor from the bottom of her toes."

Depth, experience appear to be Ursuline's top assets By Mike Dyer Enquirer staff writer
Ursuline coach Tun Beennan admits he's a bit more pumped up about the swimming season than usual. Coming off a fourth consecutive Division I state runner-up finish, Ursuline is poised to be the top girls' team in the area this season. Depth is the most significant asset for a squad that should cany 31 swimmers and eight divers. "I think our talent base is strong," Beennan said. "Who knows what the end result will be, butwedon'twanttofocusonsome mythical plan (to upset defending state champion Upper Arlington). We have our work cut out for us." • Junior Sarah Radke was part of the state champion 200 freestyle relay team and runner-up on the 200 medley relay. • Junior Amanda Rom was 14th in the 100 breaststroke. Juniors

Stephanie Conklin and Katelyn Ishee also were state qualifiers. • Sophomore Kinsey Kowalski was on the 200 medley relay team. • Junior Sarah Tanner finished second in the 200 individual medley and placed third in the 100 butterfly. • Seniors Kate Bowlin and Katie Gorsuch should also contribute on the relay teams. 'They will be just as good if not better than last year," St. Ursula coach Ann Gartner. "It's a great rivalry (with St. Ursula). The competition brings out the best in both schools." St. Ursula, which was third at state, returns four state qualifiers. Seniors Kelsey Vehr (Miami), Ashley Miller and Ashley Sohngen (Xavier) and sophomore Casey Ridge should be strong. The Bulldogs placed third in the 400 freestyle relay. Vehr finished sixth at state in the 200 freestyle and Miller was

fifth in the 500 freestyle. Anderson senior Anita Beck, who signed with Ohio State, was The Enquirer's Division I swimmer of the year last season. "Anit:a hasn't even tapped her potential yet," Anderson coach Ed Bachman said. As a junior, Beck won the state 200 and 500 freestyle events. "We have a good balance this year," Bachman said of Anderson. "I will be disappointed if we are not in the top four at the state meet." Sycamore, which was eighth at
state, returns juniors Erica Kao andKenzieKassoff-bothofwhich compete in the 50 freestyle. Sophomore Shannon Conners will compete in relays. In Division II, Indian Hill will be without diving coach Bob Farr, who has retired from coaching and teaching. Farr was The Enquirer's Division II coach of the year the past two seasons. Fonner Miami diver Jason Glorius succeeds Farr. Indian Hill had four of the top seven divers at state. Senior Amanda Smith (Indiana) won the Division ll state 500 freestyle and was second in the 200 freestyle. Junior Margaret Fish was second in the 200 individual medley and third in the 100 backstroke. Junior Natalie Fritz was on two state relay teams. Divers Kirtley Krombholz (Cincinnati), Rose Farruggia and Izzy Krombholz return.

St. X not content to just tread water By Mike Dyer Enquirer staff writer
St. Xavier boys' swimming coach Jim Brower said his Bombers are competing with a purpose this season. 'This year, the idea is we can do something pretty special," Brower said. 'There has been intensity at the workouts and a new intensity in the weight room." The Bombers brought in former Boston College offensive lineman John Richardson (St. X class of 1997) to help conduct weight training. Brower said he's already seen the effects during practice. The weight room has brought a new focus. Although the Bombers won the state title last season, their eighth straight and 28th overall, it was the first time they didn't make the Swimming World magazine Top 10 national ratings. As one of the top programs in the nation annually, the Bombers

"He has been seething at the mouth since last year," Brower said. "We don't have to convince him." • Senior Charley Hessler, who has made an oral commitment to the Naval Academy, was part of the state champion 200 medley relay team and state runner-up 200 freestyle relay. • Senior Joey Deters was part of the 400 freestyle relay and 200 freestyle relay. • Senior Bart Ginocchio, an Indiana recruit, was second in the 500 freestyle and fourth in the 200 freestyle. • Junior Jim Barbiere was the state champion in the 100 backstroke. • Sophomore Matt Columbus, a state finalist in the 500 freestyle, has shown potential. "He has done some things that
have been motivated by missing that distinction, Brower said. "Our senior class has been a strong class since they were freshmen and have been waiting to grow up for three years," Brower said. "We have a solid group of leaders." Senior David Mosko, who has signed with Stanford, won the 500 freestyle and was second in the 100 butterfly. He was also part of .the state chan1pion 400 freestyle relay and 200 medley relay teams. Brower said he would like Mosko to have a breakout perfonnance at the state meet and believes he has something to prove. 1
are very reminiscent of what David (Mosko) was doing as a sophomore,'' Brower said. While St. X is the team favorite, there are several individuals who can make an impact at the state meet. Mason junior Spencer Hewes was state champion in the 100 breaststroke and finished lith in the 200 individual medley. Lakota East senior Jared Miller (Michigan) was state champion in the 200 individual medley and fifth in the 100 breaststroke. Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy senior Justin Farra, who was in the top eight in the 100 breaststroke, has signed with Ohio State. Sophomore diver Scott Kelley qualified for state last season. In the coaching ranks, Natalie Plunkett takes over at CHCA for Brad Cunningham.
