"But here we are at state with a chance to finish in the tap three." Coach Bill Whatley left the Moeller team before the beginning of the season in November. Moeller athletic director Barry Borman called Frentsos, who was coaching at Fairfield. Frentsos moved to Moeller and later added coaching duties at Mount Notre Dame as well. "It was tough in the beginning," Frentsos said. "But I wanted to make sure our seniors knew I was 100 percent behind Moeller. I wanted everything to
run smoothly." So Frentsos retained former Moeller assistant Chris Berling. He also made a call to Louis Dissel, a certified financial planner in Cincinnati whom Frentsos used to coach at the Fairfield YMCA Dissel had been a scholarship swimmer at Xavier University, and his wife, Elizabeth, coached at Norwood. A one-time club coach in West Chester, Dissel was thrilled to get back into the coaching scene, even if it was on a parttime basis, working as-Frentsos' assistant. "Jay has always been. kind of like a father figure to me," Dissel said. 'There's no doubt it was difficult for us at first at Moeller. But we had good swimmers to work with." There was certain advice Dissel could offer before Friday's meet began that came with his
unique perspective. He was at the World Trade Center on Sept 11, 2001. Atrainee with Morgan Stanley, Dissel was on the 6lst floor of the second tower that morning whenherodetheelevatordown to go outside for a break. "As soon as we got off the elevator, the first plane hit," Dissel said. ''We looked up, and it was right above us." Thinking about the odds of surviving that day, "creeps you out," Dissel said. So when he talked to Moeller and Mount Notre Dame swimmers at the state meet, he told them to relax and enjoy the moment "You trained hard to get here, just go out and swim," Dissel said. CANrON -The joy of being a state champion has eluded Joe Albers the past three years. Albers, a Moeller senior, is hoping to experience that excitement tonight Albers was in championship form Friday night in the preliminary round of the 82nd annual Boys State Swimming and Diving Tournament at C.T. Branin Natatorium. He qualified for the finals in the four Division I events he swims. He had the top times in both of his individual events, the 200-yard individual medley and the 100 breaststroke, and was a member of the Crusaders' 200 freestyle relay that had the top time and the 200 medley relay team that had the fourthfastest time. "It would mean a lot to me," Albers said of standing on top of the podium. 'The training I put in this year was a lot more than in I had in the past I worked with weights more and went harder in the practices." Albers had a time of 1:51.62 in the 200 individual medley and 57.42 seconds in the 100 breaststroke. Jay Frentsos, who serves as coach for Moeller and Mount Notre Dame, said Albers' dedication to the sport has been on display this season. "He's a hard worker and a really mentally tough kid," Frentsos said. "I also think with it being his senior year, he realizes this is his time." Albers placed seventh last year in the 200 I:Vt and was on the 400 free relay team that was dghth. "Joe's a great competitor," Frentsos said. "He has really stepped up this season. He swims hard from start to finish. He's a year older, a year stronger and a year more experienced." Albers, a four-year state qualifier, said he is receiving interest from the swimming programs at Ohio State and Miami Cniversity. Seniors Michael Krone, Kevin Koenig and David Sanders joined Albers on the 400 free relay. Albers and Koenig combined with freshman Christian Josephson and sophomore Kevin Schwab on the 200 medley relay. Administrative mixup lands Moeller in 3rd By Mart Schmetzer Enquirer contributor
OXFORD - Moeller finished third behind St Xavier and Centerville instead of second in Friday's Division I district swim meet because the runner-up Elks got 11 points from a diver who some believe reached the finals due to what one official called an "administrative error." Centerville junior Curtis Fowler finished eighth in the district diving meet, helping the Elks score 285 points, six more than the Crusaders. After the semifinals, Fowler was 17th. The top 16 divers were supposed to quaJif1;for the finals, but Fowler was one of two extra divers who mistakenly were allowed to continue competing, said assistant district meet manager Pat Lunsford, who is in his 40th year of officiating high
Boys' diving school swimming and diving. The mixup wasn't brought to his or the diving referee's attention until after the diving portion of the meet was complet~d Wednesday, Lunsford said Saturday. Lunsford was part of the three-member committee that decided after a 30-minute meeting to allow the results to stand. "If we knew about the error prior to the completion of the event, we could have made the correction," he said. · Lunsford reported the mixup to Ohio High School Athletic A& sociation officials, who decided that rules prohibited them from overturning the meet committee's decision. The mixup had no impact on the seven divers who qualified for next week's state meet

OXFORD - Moeller finished third behind St Xavier and Centerville instead of second in Friday's Division I district swim meet because the runner-up Elks got 11 points from a diyer who some believe reached the finals due to what one official called an "administrative error." Centerville junior Curtis Fowler finished eighth in the district diving meet, helping the Elks score 285 points, six more than the Crusaders. After the semifinals, Fowler was 17th. The top 16 divers were supposed to qualify for the finals, but Fowler was one of two extra divers who mistakenly were al¡ lowed to continue competing, said assistant district meet manager Pat Lunsford, who is in his 40th

Lunsford was part of the three-member committee that decided after a 30-minute meeting to allow the results to stand. "If we knew about the error prior to the completion of the event, we could have made the correction," he said. Lunsford reported the mixup to Ohio High School Athletic A& sociation officials, who decided that rules prohibited them from overturning the meet committee's decision. St. X lead after Day 1 Colerain's Weaver wins 2 events By Jeff Wallner Enquirer contributor
The 26th annual Southwest Ohio Swimming and Diving Classic is billed as the largest of its kind in the nation. With the sectional tournament looming in three weeks, the event also seiVes as a measuring stick for area coaches in determining how well their teams are positioned for the postseason. 'This Is a unique meet because you have to earn your Janes in the morning," said St Xavier coach Jim Brower of the two-<lay event 'Then you have to get up the next morning and earn your lanes again. It really challenges you mentally and physically." The Bombers, ranked No.1 in the Enquirer Division I coaches' poll, are swimming for their 26th consecutive Classic title. Ursuline, ranked No.2 in Division I, is looking for its fifth straight title. With strong competition this year, in particular from Moeller and CenteiVille, St X is aware that its streak could be in jeopardy in today's finals. 'This is the toughest competition we've seen here," said Brower. "We're taking it in stride. Regardless of what happens, we11 learn from this. We'll try to pick up some flaws and prepare for the postseason." Entering today's girls finals, Mason is in first place, just ahead of Turpin. Moeller is trailing first. place St Xavier. Colerain junior Lauren Weaver delivered one of the top individual performances Saturday, capturing the finals of both the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard butterfly in consecutive swims. "The adrenaline kicked in," said Weaver, whose time of 56:61 in the 100 fly was the second-fastest in the Classic's history. "I had to try not to get too excited after winning the first one. I had to focus on the next one. After I won the (100fly), I was like, 'OK, I'm done for the day.'" Saturday night featured a first for Fairfield senior Bekka Westrick, who'd never won a race at the Classic. She won the 200-yard
freestyle in 1:52:41. "(The 200free) is not my favorite event," Westrick said. "It gets boring and tiring. A lot of my coaches try to sign me up for it I was close to winning last year here in the lOOfly, but the last lap killed me." . The Southwest Ohio Classic features 112 schools and more than 2,600 swimmers and 170 divers. The preliminaries are held at seven locations. The meet concludes with swimming finals at7p.m. today at Keating. The diving finals will be held at 9 am. today at the University of Cincinnati. Oak Hills senior Luke Rhodenbaugh, a fonner middle Iine backer on the Highlanders football team, won the 50-yard freestyle Saturday. "I've been swimming the 50 free my whole life," said Rhodenbaugh, who's considering West Point "I trained hard and had a very strong swim." Michael Hart, a senior from Lakota West, swam the 100-yard butterfly in 51.05, the second-best time in meet history. Wyoming senior Celia Oberholzer won the 100 breaststroke in 58.87. Mason's Danielle Jansen never trailed in winning the 500-yard freestyle in 4:59:19. She also helped lead the Comets to a victory in the 400-yard medley relay. John V!gar. a senior from Anderson, captured the 200-yard freestyle in 1:44:04. For Indian Hill, which is in a rebuilding mode with three strong freshman girls, including talented Hannah Vester, the Classic is a chance to gain valuable experience for its young swimmers. "Our kids are getting the O!)portunity to swim amid a lot of excitement," said Braves coach Da¡ vid Coffman. "You can't mimic this in a dual meet, swimming against kids you know. This is a great learning experience against high-level competition." Moeller capped the evening by winning the 200-yardfreestyle relay in 1:26:43. The Crusaders also won the 400 medley relay.

Power St. Xavier turning to youth Looking to bounce back from runner-up finish By Chris Delotell // ... 3 i:) •• 0

After last season's second-place finish at the state meet, St. Xavier coach Jim Brower would love if he had most of his key contributors returning this season. Unfortunately for the Bombers, however, that is not the case. St Xavier instead will attempt to recapture the state title with an inexperienced roster. "We have a very small senior class, so that makes us a veryyoungteam," Brower said. "The challenge I presented to the team is for people to see themselves in a light they've never seen themselves before. We showed them all the voids left behind and basically said that someone has to step up and fill those holes." The Bombers do return three swimmers and one diver who scored at the state meet last season, Brower said. Senior Matt Columbus has committed to South Carolina, while classmate Evan Schwartz will go to Duke. Fellow senior Will Lawley and diver Mason Meier have yet to make college decisions. Other local coaches expect St. X to remain the area's top team. "It's bee·n that way for a while, v said Mason coach Mark Sullivan. "'The tradition has been strong there. They just have numbers. They are able to reload every year. They may not be quite as good as they've been in the past, but they should
still be able to dominate the Southwest District." Brower said St. X's past success motivates his swimmers. "I think it helps the guys to stay focused on holding that tradition," he said. "We have a saying that tradition without the present is history." La Salle also expects to have a strong team, returning four district qualifiers in swimming and one district-qualifying diver. "We expect to be a very solid team in every event," coach Mike Lienhart said. "We have the potential to send three relays and three individuals to state this year, provided everyone steps up and fulfills their role on the team." New this season is a second division of boys' competition. The Ohio High School Athletic Association added it in hopes of providing individuals and teams from smaller schools opportunities to compete for state championships. The OHSMalso hopes it encourages greater participation among students at a wider group of schools. Cincinnati Hills League powers Indian Hill and Wyoming figure to benefit from competing in the new division. The Cowboys return three members of the 200.yard medley relay team that finished 15th at state last season. Indian Hill diver Michael Grainger placed third at state last season as a junior.
