for Lakota. He transferred to Fairfield this season and picked up right where he left off. Moving to 145, he mowed down every opponent this year. Coffing pinned all but one of the opponents he faced during the regular season.

Three of Coffing's teammates at Fairfield join him on the first team.

Van Reid (132 pounds), Jeff Saylor (155) and Todd Taylor (185) were also named to the first squad. Reid finished with a 25-3 record, while Saylor and Taylor each finished at 27-2.

SYCAMORE HAD two flrstteamers in Steve Garrett, who finished 31-3 at 112 pounds, and Mark Mather, who put together a 24-3 record at heavyweight.

Others named to the first team included Mike Dodson of Oak Hills at 98 pounds, Jim Shepherd of Northwest at 105, Derrick Strahorn of Walnut Hllls at 126, Don Wolbers

But perhaps the second-best wrestler in town didn't make the first team. Anderson's Wilson broke national records this year in both the tooyard butterfly and 100-yard backstroke to win first-team recognition in both events. He won both events at the state meet.

Others named to the first team in more than one event included John Ravenhall of Sycamore in the 200-yard individual medley and the 500-yard freestyle and Greg Higginson of Sycamore in the 100-yard freestyle and 100-yard breaststroke.

Higginson won both his events at the state meet, while Ravenhall won the 200 1M and finished second in the 500 free.

ANOTHER STATE champion on the first team is St. Xavier's 200yard medley relay team, which consisted of Mike Conaton, Kyle McMurry, Victor Lee and Mike Bergman. The Bombers' 400-yard freestyle relay team, which finished second at the state meet, also earned first-team honors. Bergman, Doug Evans, John Stires and Scot Nelson made up that team.

Overall, the Bombers' nailed down 12 of the 31 first-team and honorable mention spots on the allcity team. And that tor a team which was supposed to be one of the weakest St. X teams in recent memory. But Loomis and his team held on, despite a couple of disappointing dual-meet losses this year, to Win the state meet by a margin of

St. X Takes Wrong Turns But Still Finds State Swim Title

CANTON-The St. Xavier Aquabombers won their lOth consecutive crown in the Ohio high school boys' swimming and diving championships Saturday at Branin Natatorium here, but for St. X coach JLm Loomis, the victory was hardly rou, tine.

-"It's different every year," said an emotionally-drained Loom is, whose Aquabombers overcame runnerup Akron Ffrestone by 44 points.

"Last 1 year, I couldn't .have been more pleased. Everything went r.ight. This year, almost everything \l,'entwrong." .

I . , As Loomis, dripping wet, posed for photographs while holding the team's enormous gold state championship trophy, one couldn't determine whether he was more bedraggled from the victory dunking O!: the meet itself.

"I'M TIRED," Loomis admitted.

"I wish we had swum better . But I'lJl pleased we swam as well as we did."

St. X, which triumphed only In the 200-yard medley relay (swum by Mike Conaton; Kyle McMurry, Vic, tor Lee and Mike' Bergman) and had two swimmers disqualified for making illegal turns, finished with 186 points.

Akron Firestone, a public school that shares its pool with other area high schools, was a surprise runnerup With 142 points, stunning Upper Arlington, which finished third With 129 points. Upper Arlington, runnerup last year and eight times since 1968, had wallopped Akron Firestone, 109-63, in a dual meet earlier this season.

Sycamore flnslhed fourth with 113 points, behind first-place finishes from Greg Higginson in the 100-yard fr~estyle and 100-yard breaststroke, and another from

John Ravenhall in the 200-yard individuaL medley. Higginson broke the state record of 57.731 seconds he set in the 100 breast in Friday's preliminaries with a time of :57.617.

ANDERSON, WITH a team of only five swimmers, finished sixth with 57 points. Wilson eclipsed the backstroke mark of :51.374 he set in last year's state meet with a time of :51.140.

Flnneytown, led by John Oswlan:v.'s runnerup performance in the 100 fly and fourth-place finish in the 200 individual medley, finished 12th with 24 points. A total of 78 schoo-ls were represented in the meet. , Perhaps the most dramatic race was the 500-yard freestyle, in which

, Firestone's John Smith surged past defending champion Ravenhall O!l the 20th and final lap and sprinted to a record-breaking victory. Smith shattered Ravenhall's state ~;ecord of 4:34.822 with a time of 4:32.771 and defeated Ravenhall by nearly oneand-a-half seconds. Smith also posted a state record in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:41.296.

In the meet's most dramatic moment, the crowd stood and cheered senior Dave Wilson for about as long as it took him to set his national backstroke mark. Earlier, spectators had risen to watch Wilson swim the· 100 fly in hopes of seeing him set another record. But Wilson's time of .:49.051 was shy of his state record of :49.013 set in the premllinaries and his nationaL mark of :48.5 set in the district championships last weekend.

Wilson breaks mark

It was really no surprise that Anderson's Dave Wilson set a new National High School record for the 100-yard butterfly. He· had quqlified for the southwestern Ohio district meet last week at UC with a 49.96 clocking. It was just a matter of time before Mark Spitz' only remaining record was erased. But, what the overflowing crowd at Keating Natatoriun didn't expect was the 48.50 time he recorded, sending Gary Hall'~> natatorium record out with Spitz'.

Wilson's new National high school record highlighted the district meet. the final step to the state championships in Canton, Oh., next weekend.

Another non-surprise was the fact that St. Xavier ran (swam) away with the team title, far ahead of runner-up Sycamore.

The spectators were, of course,

filled witli swimming knowledge. As the announcer began announcing the swimmers for heat three of the 100 fly, even a non-swinner had to know something was about to happen.

When Wilson was announced, there was a sudden roar from the stands ..

Wilson broke out fast (22.81) in the first 50 and when the split went on the timeboard, the crowd started cheering because they knew the record was his.

"I knew I had broken the record when I touched," explained Wilson. '.'1 could hear the crowd during the final 25 yards and when I touched, it felt like the roof was caving in."

Wilson said that he felt good tonight but hadn't really been working on butterfly that much in practice.

Three events later, Wilson was entered in the 100 backstroke, an event that he already holds the Nationar high school record in. When the water had settled, it was thought that he had bettered his mark but a

computer mistake had printed a 51.0 time on the timeboard when it was really a 51.8, which was still a district record but five-tenths off his national mark.

Wilson's national mark overshowed some impressive times.

Sycamore's John Ravenhall won two events as he set a district record in the freestyle with a 4:36.69 clocking and won the 200 individual medley in 1:55.71.

St. Xavier tightened its clamp on local high school swimming with· a 92-75 victory over Sycamore Saturday night at Sycamore's pool in the · battle of Cincinnati's top swimming teams.

"No one 1n the state has the depth and talent to beat them," Sycamore coach Larry Lyons said before the season. "That's just the way it is. They just have too much."

Lyons was proved right Saturday as depth was the"difference.

Withrow moves Withrow High School has moved it~ Feb. 2 game against Hughes to Cincinnati Technical College at Central Parkway and Ludlow Avenue.

"There's a lot of interest in this game so we're switching it to the bigger CTC gym to accomodate more fans," said Withrow AD Bill Melloy.

Withrow leads the Public High School League with an 8-0 record while Hughes is in second place arid 10-3 overall.
