COLUMBUS - La Salle coach Frank Russo stood in the center of the infield of Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium Saturday night filled with enough pride to cover the Ohio State University campus.

For the first time in 14 years, the Lane· ers made it to the stand as a team when they finished as the Division I runner-up af the boys' state 'track and field meet The Lancers finished with 41 points just three points behind state champion Cleveland Heights.

La Salle was projected to finish fifth, but garnered· significant points thanks to championship performances by seniors Chandler Burden and DeVier Posey.

Walnut girts capture pair of relay titles • It was a good day on the track for other area athletes at the state meet.

Walnut Hill's 800-meter relay team of Shauniece Steele; Landi Wilson, Kelly 'Thomas and Ashley Liverpool ran to a title with a time of 1:38.'60. Steele, WiiSIDn and Liverpool also teamed with Nicole Patterson to set a meet and state record with a tim·e of 3:45.89 in the 1,600-meter relay.

Mason's Zach Willis won the oltler area Division I boys' title, finishing first in . tlie 3;200 meters with a time of 9:15.34.

• The Badin baseball team's quest for a state title came up one game short, as the Rams lost 8-0 to Canton Central Catholic in the Division Ill championship game.

today," Russo said. "I thought we maximized what we could possibly do up here today. Our guys laid it out on the track and on the field. I couldn't have been more proud of how we competed up here the past few days."

It was the first state track runner-up finish for La Salle, which won the state title in 1994, and was third in 1995.

Burden became the first La Salle thrower to win a state titlewhenhewontheshotputand then came back a few hours later to win the discus.

"He's real quiet and stoic," La Salle athletic director and throwing coach Dan Flynn said. "(But) I saw a few tears coming out of the shot put" Said Burden: "I did it for myself and my coaches. They really wanted me to win badly and they really helped."

"We practiced hard every day," Posey said." ... We had a successful season."

Posey put in an extra gear to barely edge his opponent in the 4QO just before the finish line.

Dublin Scioto senior Thomas Murdaugh was second in 47.47.

"It was the last time running this event I had to give it my all," Posey said. "I felt (the other runners coming up) and I just saw mywholecareerflash b,eforemy eyes like I was dying or something. I was like 'no way, I have to win something up here.' " Posey, an Ohio State football signee, said it was significant to win his state title at his future school. Posey plans to move up to campus next Saturday.

"You've been Jtllbelievable," Russo told Posey: "You are a great leader."

La Salle's loaded again this spring Balanced squad hopes to build on last season

La Salle coach Frank Russo has nothing but high regard for the group of athletes the Lancers returns this spring.

That balance is evident on the track and in field events for La Salle, which is ranked No. 1 in the Enquirer preseason Division I area coaches' poll. , The Lancers last season were regional runners-up, district champions, Enquirer poll champions and Greater Catho. lie League South division champions.

"We have an outst2.nding nucleus of talent," Russo said.

"What we return in terms of talent and ability ... gives us a great chance overall to compete for a state title."

The Lancers' talent begins with senior DeVier Posey, a two-time all-state qualifier in the 400-meter dash.

Posey finished fifth in the · 200 at state last season.

"DeVier has only been running for two years," Russo said. "He has tremendous upside and a great work ethic. He · still has the potential to make a quantum leap in his individual events. He cauld contend in the 200 and 400."

Senior Kendall Owens was the GCL champion in the 100meter dash .. · Owens' season was cut short in 2007 after he pulled a hamstring in the' GCL meet; Rilsso said the Lancers will benefit from his return.

La Salle freshman Travis Hawes, an all-state cross-country runner, will be a key factor in distance events. -He was 12th at the state cross country meet in the fall.

"I think Hawes can advance to the state champiOifship in

either the 1,600 or 3,200- he has that type of talent," Russo said.

St. Xavier, in at No. 2, has a young s•1uad of mostly sophomores and juniors, but coach Oliver Mason said the Bombers will be among the area's top teams. .

Senior Dan Thaler, who was runner-up in the state cross country meet, returns in distance events. He is expected to compete in the 1,600 and 3,200 and possibly a relay.

"He should have a good season," Mason said.

Others to watch include juniors Phil Grannan (800), J ad~ Greenlee (pole vault), Anthony Walriven (high jump) and Justinian Masoa (long jump).

Junior Aaron Nimrick and freshman Corey Ochs also will contribute. · Lakota West and Mason, new in the Greater Miami Conference, are set to battle for -aominance.

Brandon Candella and Jordan Parayil return as part of a Lakota West 3,200 relay team that finished sixth at the Division I state meet (7:53.86).

Winton Woods, \vith Enquirer track Coach of the Year Ron Wright, easily figures into the top five and could improve its area record time in the 1,600 relay at state.

Joe Booker and Maurice Norman return from that team, which finished third at the Division I state meet (3:15.42).

Lamont Lattimore should be a standout in the hurdles and high jump.

In Division II, Wyoming, Finneytown and New Richmond top the poi] at first, second and third, respectively.
