St. Xavier's cross country team, .first in the final 1990 Enquirer city poll, is starting the 1991 season in the same position. Coach Larry Merkel's Bombers captured nine of the 15 first-place votes cast, garnering 140 points, 20 more than second-place Elder. · "We return two first-team All City performers in Quen Metzler and James Devanney," Merkel said. "Also, we have a good group of seniors who were league champs as freshmen and sophomores." . But Merkel also has several outstanding freshmen, including Chris Bollman, who has the potential to sideline one of the seasoned veterans. Elder coach Steve Spencer has been waving the crying towel during the preseason, but no one's buying his story. "We lost 10 seniors to graduation, includiug Terry McLean and Mark Westrich," Spencer said. "Five of our seven top runners were seniors and this year's senior group is the smallest in years." Despite Spencer's pessimism, seniors Matt Westrich, John Louis and Brian Flannery will lead the way for the Purple Pack as they attempt to repeat as GCL champions and return to the state meet. "After finishing first or second in the state six of the past nine years, we have to be considered underdogs," Spencer said. "We just hope we can be competitive." Like St. Xavier, No. 3 La Salle also returns two All City performers in Noel Enneking and Dave Padgett. Add sophomore

Dave Bockenstette, seniors Robert Mohr, Eric Horn and Doug Stern, and the Lancers have the potential to surface as the top team . This could be the year the Oak Hills boys return to the state meet for the first time since 1979. Veteran coach Bob Yung has the entire squad back from last season, including Jamie Alexander, John Campolongo, Keith Tenoever, J. Gregg Robinson, Terry Williamson and Adam Knecht. "We have great senior leadership and experience," Yung said. "Keith Tenoever was a state qualifier last year, but this won't be a one-man show. Newcomer Matt Hoyes will also play an important role." Milford's a virtual unknown under firstyear coach Dave Ackerman. Although the Eagles lost Mark Lewis to graduation, they return David Planck, Jeff Kozak and Tony Main and must rely on a wealth of untested talent. The top 10 is rounded out with Moeller, Lakota, Turpin, Harrison and Fairfield. Moeller and Lakota are given the best chances to make it into the top five before the season concludes.
