FAIRBORN, Ohio - Moeller has had eight football teams make it to .a state championship game, but never have the Crusaders had a wrestler in a state championship match. Until today. Tom Zinkan beat Chris Grant of Westerville North, 9-8, in the 130-pound semifinals Friday at Wright State University's Nutter Center. Zinkan will be the first Moeller wrestler since 1975 to place in the state tournament. With teammates Clint Whalen i 152 pounds) and Scott Ostholthoff ( 189 J advancing to the quarterfinals and consolation semifinals, respectively, Moeller coach Jeff Gaier is pleased. "This is one of the best years that we have ever had here at state." Gaier said. After Zinkan decisioned previously undefeated Peter Nathanson of Shaker Heights, 11-1, on Thursday, he "had a feeling" that a championship match was imminent. Zinkan opened. Friday's action with a 15-0 technical decision over David White of Akron 'North. Zinkan's defeat of Grant in the semifinals required a little more effort. "I was more fired up today than I have been," Zinkan said. "I had to be a little more fired up for that (second) match." Zinkan will meet Bryan Gron of Cleveland St. Joseph for the title. In Division!: • Princeton's Quincy North and Fairfield's Willie Wineberg will meet in an all-Greater Miami Conference final at 103 pounds. Zinkan vies for Moeller's first title Fairfield has two in championships BY RASDY OPPESHEIMER Enquirer Contributcr
DAYTOS, Ohio Tommy Zinkan became the first Moeller wrestler to reach the state finals, winning twice Friday at the Ohio high school wrestling tournament at Wright State t:niversity's Nutter Center. Zinkan is one of eight Greater Cincinnati wrestlers to reach today's finals. The Moeller sophomore was only third at
Wrestling the district tournament a week ago, the final qualifying spot. But he began the state tournament by beating undefeated Peter Nathanson of S:iuk~·i' :I.ightd. He ad\anced to the finals \\ith a 9-8 win over Chris Grant of Westerville Sort h. Zinkan was a district qualifier last year, but didn't make it to the state tournament. "Last year the desire wasn't there toward the end," he said. "This time I'm ready. I was more fired up today than [ have been all season." Zinkan (31-5) will meet Bryan Gron of Cleveland Villa-Angela-St. Joseph. Gron (32-5) pulled the biggest upset of the tournament, beating Dan Leemaster of Stow Walsh Jesuit, the defending champ, in the quarterfinals. Fairfield dropped to fifth in the Division I team standings. Stow Walsh Jesuit leads Division I, Ravenna Southeast leads Division II and West Liberty Salem is in front in Division III. Today's final round will start with an all-Cincinnati match: Fairfield's Willie Wineberg and Princeton's Quincy North meet for the Division I 103-pound championship. North. a senior, is in the state tournament for the third time, looking for his first title. Wine be I g is trying to become the first Fairfield freshman to win a state title. He's lost only twice all year - both times to North. Nrrth beat Trotwood's Shane Conyers to reach the finals, the same wrestler he lost to in the district tournament. "I learned from that match," North said. "He's got a Russian series of moves that I stayed ahead of this time." A second match between locals was wiped out when Fairfield's Dave Barden lost in the quarterfinal round. Barden had beaten the defending state champion, Lakota's Karl Grove, three times this ~eason. But Grove will go against Clint Musser of Stow Walsh Jesuit in the finals. "I have mixed emotions about it," Grove said. "I would have liked to beat Dave, the revenge and all that. That would have been great. "But a guy beats you three times, it puts a thought in the back of your head," he conceded. Grove beat :\lusser, 8-4, during the season at the Medina Tournament. "But he was tough," Grove said. "The match wasn't as easy as the score looks." Fairfield also has Chad Dennis in the finals. Dennis (33-1), fifth last year, will meet undefeated Joe Plouse (34-0) of Akron North. Lakota's Brian Strunck lost for the first time this year in the semifinal round. The senior fell to Strongsville's Jerry Grammes, 9-3. "Brian got hit with a five-point move in the first period," said Lakota coach Bob Stoll, "and then had to spend the rest of the match chasing the guy. The kid had a big lead and sat on it." In Division II. Bethel-Tate's Joey Calhoun and Lebanon's John Noble both advanced to the final round. Calhoun beat Eric Lippert of Kansas Lakota, 4-2. with a takedown with seven seconds left, after giving up an escape that tied the match 20 seconds earlier. Noble stayed on track toward a second state title, beating Jason Wolff of Twinsburg Chamberlin, 11-5, to move into the finals. In Division III, Terry Shinkle continued in his effort to become Batavia's first state champion. Shinkle (37-0) will meet the returning state champion, Jim Smiles of Columbus Bishop Ready (28-2). Fifth- and third-place matches begin at 10 a.m., followed by championship matches about noon.
Lakota's Karl Grove, right, dominates Hilliard's Tim Cameron in an 8-1 decision in the Division 1112-pound semifinals Friday. Grove will be going for his second s~ate title today. Division I

Joey Calhoun won many individllal honors wrestling for BethelTate. He was a three-time section~1 champ, a two-time district :hamp, and became Bethel-Tate's first state champion two weeks ~go.
For his accomplishments Cal1oun has been selected as The E:nquirer's Division II-III wrestler )f the year for 1990-91 season. Calhoun won 142 matches in ~our years at Bethel-Tate, losing lUSt 17. He was so good, no one on the :earn could push him hard at prac:ice. But coach Bruce Hrycyk round another way to challenge :alhoun. "Joey spent most of this season teaching and helping the other ods," Hrycyk said. "For the first :tour of practice every day he :oached the team. We had six freshmen on the varsity, and he was great with them. They're all ~xcited about wrestling now." Calhoun, who will attend Ohio U. on a wrestling scholarship, .earned both the joys and frustra:ions of coaching. "It made it more interesting for ne," he said. "I learned a lot about 1ow to teach, and it helps you learn nore yourself. I learned patience :oo." He finished his senior season with a 42-1 mark, and swept :hrough the postseason tournanents without a serious challenge. Tom Wiederhold's Clermont Northeastern team won the South~rn Buckeye Conference title for :he second year in a row. The Rockets also won the Roger Bacon lnvitational, Amelia's David Angel lnvitational, and were second belind Moeller in the small school iivision of the Coaches Classic. Those accomplishments earned Wiederhold The Enquirer's Divi>ion II-III coach of the year award. "Last year we had some good rids that were just on the verge," ;aid Wiederhold, who has been at

Masanek, Dennis take Div. I honors Fairfield coach, senior led Indians' wrestling team to 'a special year' BY RANDY OPPENHEIMER Enquirer Contributor
Fairfield claimed both the honors in Division 1: Chad Dennis was named The Enquirer's wrestler of the year, and Ron Masanek won the coach-of- theyear award. Wrestling at 152 pounds, Dennis finished second in the state, a point away from a state title. He Chad Dennis finished the year 33-2. Dennis, fifth in the state as a junior, is the third brother in his family to wrestle at the state tournament. He's been wrestling since he was in kindergarten, and is also a licensed AAU referee. "We have a good kids program in Fairfield," he said, "and we'd do things like have practice at night and stay and help the little kids, try and show them things. "We want to help to maintain what's been built here. It reflects on us too, even after we've gone on to college." Dennis, who normally would wrestle 100 or more matches in a summer, plans to wrestle only 50 or so this summer, so he can schedule trips to colleges. He says Masanek was a big part of his own success on the mat. "He's not a screamer," Dennis said, "but you can tell when he's upset. He gets upset by someone not being able to execute, but the next day he's ready to help. He doesn't linger on a loss." Masanek, in his 26th year as coach of the Indians, says this was a special year for him. "This team provided its own leadership, from the seniors," he said. "In the beginning of the year everybody picked Lakota to be first. I even voted Lakota No. 1. The kids felt they had something to nrove."
Wrestling coaches win state honors Five Tristate residents received special awards this year from the Ohio High School Wrestling Coaches Association. Fairfield coach Ron Masanek and St. Xavier coach Dick Murphy were inducted into the OHSWCA Hall of Fame, and Lakota's Bob Stoll was named the Division I coach of the year. Additionally, Fairfield's Sue Dennis and Oak Hills grad Clara Smith were presented OHSWCA service awards, the only two in the state to receive that honor. Both have organized and supervised many tournaments throughout the area. The season included Fairfield's first freshman state champion, Willie Wineberg. "That was the cherry on top the sundae," Masanek said. FIRST TEAM 103 - Willie Wineberg (Fairfield)

Moeller's Zinkan answers biggest critic By Frank Angst Press Contributor
In wrestling, when all eyes are focused on two individuals battling it out within a padded circle, it's easy to understand that pressure can cause problems for high school athletes. For all the outside sources, the biggest pressures on Moeller's newly-crowned state champion Tom Zinkan are self-imposed. After placing third at the district meet a week earlier, Zinkan pulled off one of the most surprising victories of the state tournament by winning the Divi· sion I 130-pound championship Saturday at Wright State University's Nutter Center. Zinkan, a sophomore, brought home Moeller's first state wrestling championship. "All year Tom has put a lot of pressure on himself," Moeller coach Jeff Gaier said. "One of his goals was to make it to state. Once he accomplished that I think he no longer felt the pressure." Gaier said Zinkan took each match at state one at a time and
gained more confidence with each victory. In his first match, Zinkan defeated Shaker Heights' Tony Watterson, something no one else had been able to do all year. The final score was 11·1. "That match gave him con· fidence that he could go all the way," Gaier said. Zinkan then defeated Akron North's David White 15-0 and Westerville North's Chris Grant 8-7. "Tom got behind early in that match, but he didn't stop. I think he wore Grant down," Gaier said. "Tom scored a takedown in the last minute to put that match away." That victory sent Zinkan into the finals against Brian Gron of Cleveland St. Joseph. The two wrestled to a tie during regulation, forcing an overtime period. In the last four seconds of overtime Zinkan scored an escape to win 8-7.
"Tom had never wrestled better," Gaier said. Zinkan finished the season 33-5.
Moeller's other two state qualifiers, juniors Scott Ostholthoff and Clint Whalen, · failed to place at state.
Gaier said Ostholthoff drew two of the top finishers in his 189-pound class. "I think one of the differences between Tom and Scott was that Tom had the advantage of facio~ some tougher competition earlier in the year. Scott could have used some more quality opponents earlier this year,'' Gaier said. "It was not a great tournament for Scott, but it was a great yt:ar for him.'' Whalen came within one point of placing, losing a 1o-9 match. All in all it was a very successful year for the Moeller wrestling program. The Crusaders won the 15-team Milford Invitational and won their Division in the Coaches' Classic. Gaier said the highlight of the year was the second-place finish m the GCL. "We finished just a few points out of first place and everyone placed for us in that meet. It seemed we peaked for that meet,'' Gaier said. Moeller finished 9-2 in dual meets and qualified six wrestlers to district - Zinkan, Whalen, Ostholthoff, junior John Gatto ( 119) , senior Bob Pflanz (171) and heavyweight Guy Olinger.
Ursuline swimmers achieve self-fulfillment By Frank Angst Press Contributor
·.
"The girls knew they had a lot of talent and ability; they didn't let anything get them down. Some of our swimmers were lost at times because of sickness or injury, but the team stayed deter· mined and focused."
- Ursuline swim coach Lynn Marggrandar
The first time this season Ur· suline swim coach Lynn Marggrandar conducted a practice she lmew her team had the potential for great success. That potential became reality two weekends ago as the Lions captured the ~Is state champions:!R; besting second-place Oak . by 27 points. Marggrandar said determination was the reason this team with potential performed in the pool. "The girls knew they had a lot of talent and ability; they didn't let anything get them down,'' Marggrandar said. "Some of our swimmers were lost at times because of sickness or injury, but the team stayed determined
and focused." Teamwork came through in the relay events as the Lions won two relays and finished second in the third. The 200-yard medley relay team of Jenni Dahl, Holly Oppelt, Shannon Kieley and Beth Jackson set a state record with a time of 1 minute, 38.74 seconds. Jackson won the 100 backstroke and Emily Landon won the 500 freestyle. Marggrandar and Ann Schoenberger guided the Lions to the state title. Marggrandar was quick to ~read the congratulations, noting that most of her swimmers compete for summer programs and crediting those coaches. "Most of all I'm proud of the girls. They deserved this season. As coaches Ann and I can't take a lot of credit. They were the ones who nerformed."
