Football OFFENSE This year's offense ~ed by All-American quarterback, Tim Koegel, was probably more awesome than ever in Moeller's football history. Although the rushing game was statistically responsible for a greater amount of yardage, the passing game was more impressive. Koegel's favorite targets for passing yardage were Dave Condeni, Bob Massong, and Steve Puthoff. Massong was also responsible for much of the rushing yardage, along with Steve¡ Givens and junior Charlie Milton. It was the outstanding protection afforded by the offensive line, though, that gave this squad its effectiveness. Seniors John Budde, Tom Quick, Rob Lockwood, Dan Donnelly, Kevin Yoas, and Jim Brown formed this bulwark.

Football DEFENSE The Crusader Defense, of the infamous "Crunch Bunch," led by seniors Tim Tepe, Rich Hubbard, Karl Woods, Rick Nichols and Chip Fry, to mention but a few, lived up to their name again this year. They ailowed only forty points throughout the entire season. The season included seven shutouts. The "Crunch Bunch" proved a stalwart to even the most celebrated offensive attacks in the State. Of the twelve exceptional teams on the Crusader schedule, only one, Middletown, had a score in double digits. Junior standouts included Billy Long, Tim Schira, Bob Crable, Tim Kolkmeyer, Tony Perotti, Mike Rohlfs and Pete Humphrey.
SPECIALTIES Senior kicker Ken Naber led the Specialty Team making 43 out of 47 points after touchdown. Naber's understudy, junior Harry Oliver, stood in occasionally¡ to prepare for taking Naber's job in 1977. A difficult position to fill. Junior Steve Jagoditz held the ball for the kickers.

State Semi-Finals Moeller football had become a legend in its own time. Before the season had even started, Joe Namath's National Prep Sports magazine had picked the Crusaders as the Number One Team in the nation. This, of course, could only be speculative, but the Crusaders set out to prove it true. They seemed to crush every team they played with such ease and precision, that fans no longer went to a game to see if the Big Moe would win or lose. Instead, interest shifted to the margin by which the Crusaders would win a game. Moeller received extensive publicity through feature articles in such publications as THE CINCINNATI POST and CINCINNATI SPORT. But was all this blown out of proportion? Time would tell. It came time for the State Championsl)ip games. The first game was with Youngstown Mooney Two years ago Mooney had spoiled our chances for a State Champtionship under similar circumstances; would this be a repeat? Surely many insiders knowing the potential of the powerful Crusader team didn't think so, but for some outsiders hearing the reputation of_ the Mooney team, the possibility prevailed. The important night game and the outcome was decisive. At half-time the score was listing ' in Moeller's favor 32-0. Mr. Faust decided to give the second string a chance. They went in and finished the job that had been started for them. The final score was 48-D, and once more the Crusaders were on their way to the State Finals~

The Finals The next week we met Gahanna Lincoln in the championship game. It was covered on Statewide television, but it seemed as if the entire school was there to see it in person. It was difficult, this time, to harbor any fear of loss. Even though no Ohio AAA team had ever won back-to-hack State titles, the Crusaders' performance a week earlier stood as testimony to their ability. The game opened with Moeller in possession. A series of running plays were to no avail. The Crusaders were stopped and forced to give up the ball. It was unusual to see them fight so much for yardage. The fans had come to see what appeared to be contention. The Crusaders just weren't playing their best game. We quickly regained possession and then it happened - a fiftyfour yard touchdown pass to Bob Massong. We were rolling again. After that Gahanna seemed powerless to stop us. They managed a safety on one of their kickoffs, but received the same treatment on the next play when we kicked off to them. The balance of their five points was a field goal, but it didn't matter. Now, more • surely than ever Moeller was the best in the State. But that was not enough. Not only were we the first AAA team in Ohio to win consecutive State Titles, we were also picked by three major polls as the Best in the Nation.

Cross Country The Moeller Cross Country team took on a new face this year. With a new head coach, Mr. Dick Beerman, this meant adjustments to a new style of coaching and a new system. But the newness became familiar guite soon, and Cross Country~as in full trot. How far did it trot? The Varsity 'ran against stiff competition all year, and- with a sigh, once again placed sixth in the G.C.L.Senior Jerry Brinker was a bright spot in the season. He captured both the Most Valuable Runner and the Captain Award at the season's end. The J.V. and the Frosh runners did a bit better in the G.C.L. Both placed third. The Best Sophomore Award went to Jeff Schutter, and the Crusader Award was given to Tony Fago. With Coach Beerman returning to the helm next season, and with the returning runners now familiar with his style, we look forward to a good showing.

The Moeller Soccer men bettered their season this year. The battling hooters compiled a 4-8 record, compared to last year's dismal 1" 11. Coach Fred Manegold's kickers are still a yqung squad. They need time to work out the little problems and oil their squeaky parts in order to become the well-running machine they must be in o;._~er to compete in the G.C.L. ""-· The team tl!is year showed a more aggressive style of soccer, and they gave many opponents runs for their money. Goalie Jerry Thamann, Ken Zinnecker, Paul Trapp, Tom Hertlein, John Nowakowski and Rick Quatkemeyer were some of the .seniors who led the rough-and-tumble action. Returning juniors John Fischer and Mike Byrnes, Mike Meyer, Luke Hennel, Dave Montage, and Mike Dowling promise more of the same in the up-coming season. Let's go soccer! This was Moeller's first year of fielding a Reserve soccer team. This fledgling group of kickers was coached by Mr. Kevin Donovan, a member of Moeller's '73 soccer squad. The Reserve team compiled a 4-3-1 record in their eight outings of the season.

Freshman/J. V. Wrestling The Frosh wrestlers experienced much more than a new school and a riew atmosphere; They experienced first-year coach David Vargo; a rough-and-rugged crazy man of a coach. Coach Vargo is a Moeller graduate and a top wrestler. His grapplers walked orito the mats, inany for the very first time, arid compiled a 3-7 dual-meet record. They placed fifth in the Bridgeto-wn meet, the toughest frosh meet in the city. The J.V. team, under Coach Ted Hall's gQidance, had a some· what successful season. They finished 7-6 for the season. The team also placed fourth iri the G_C.L. for the year.

Varsity Wrestling The Moeller matmen peaked late in the season this year. The Varsity Crusaders, mentored by Coach Ted Hall after Coach John Parker stepped down, wrestled the best competition in the state and in the city this year. With a 1-6 dual-meet record, many critics would view this season as a bomb. This is untrue. The grapplers were laid low with key injuries and snow-ins that made practice and weight watching next to impossible. As the season moved on however, the Crusaders did quite well in tournament wrestling. The Varsity placed third in the Glen Este Tournament, one point behind Sycamore, second in the Indian Hill tourney, and they pinned down fourth out of sixteen teams in the G.C.L. sectionals. The team was lead by senior co-captains Steve Behm, who was hit by a bad knee injury, and Dave Markgraf. Markgraf, the herculean heavyweight, was selected the team's Most Valuable Player.

Varsity Basketball This was a disappointing season for the Crusader roundballers. They closed this year's record book with a 9-11 tally. They did give a creditable showing in end-of-the-year tournm:pent play. They downed Walnut Hills in the first match, but they finally bowed to the Elder Panthers 60-66 in ~n overtime thriller. Moeller's Varsity basketball squad was co-captained this year by seniors Tim Koegel and Dean Cazel. Coach "Gip" Fehring tried various starting combinations throughout the season looking for the winning form. However, that form proved to be elusive. In the opinion of some pundits, the sophomores would have been G.C.L. champions had not several of them been moved up to the Varsity squad late in the. season. As it was, Coach Dave Hammer's Reserve squad ended their season~ play on the winning side of the ledger. Their season's record stand 11-7. If losing helps build character, the Freshman basketball team has some strong characters. Coach Larry Rovito's freshman team was bested eleven of the sixteen times¡ they took to the court.

This year's field and track squads made a very passable mark in the school's record books. The Varsity placed second in stiff G.C.L. competition, the Reserves brought home a championship season, and the Freshmen squad tallied a fifth in the G.C.L. standings. The harriers and the field men were paced by seniors John Meder, Jim Brown, John Cianciolo, Rob Zwick, Terry Brinker, Greg Tilsley and Joe Steiner. Jim Brown and junior Mark Schehr competed almost daily to see who could lob the shot put beyond the previous day's distance. Brown tossed the iron ball fifty-five feet, four-and-one-half inches. This toss stood as the best in the city and fifth in the state. Charlie Milton seemed to break a record each time he soared over the high hurdles. He broke the school's high hurdles record this year. The mile relay team of Tim Schira, Joe Dillon, Joe Steiner and Ricky Neal burned up the track as they lapped the competition. Varsity awards were garnered by Charlie Milton (Most Valuable Trackman), Rick Neal (Most Valuable Runner), Mark Schehr (Most Valuable Fieldman), Joe Steiner (Captain's Award), and Tony Fago (the Crusader Award).

Varsity Baseball Moeller's baseball team was named tenth in the nation by Joe Namath's Prep Sports magazine. This selection was based on seven returning starters (1 outfield, 3 infielders, 1 designated hitter, and 2 pitchers), and two pre-season All American picks (Bob Massong and Ron Klein). The team's expectations for another baseball State title were not realized due to a LaSalle pitcher (Bob Schroeck), some mental mistakes, poor base running at times, and periodic whole-team slumps. Yet their 25-7 record was just one game off the school record (26-6) in 1972 which won the school its first ever State title. The Crusaders did break records this season. They picked off over twenty-five double plays, they posted the most runs scored (189), the most at-bats (1,085), the highest batting average (.310), the most singles (197), and the most doubles (51). At the seasori's end, the Crusaders were rated fourth in the city, and they walked off the field with their fourth G.C.L. championship in the school's seventeen-year history. The Most Valuable Player award was given to Ron Klein, the Best Defensive Player was Jerry Thamann, and junior Russ Huesman was tagged Most Improved Junior. The Reserve squad proved to be tough too. They posted a strong 154 season's record. While the Freshman team (the first such team in Moeller's sports program) walked off the diamond at season's end undefeated in seven outings. Moe was one of the few area schools to field a frosh baseball team, so the majority of teams the fledglings faced were Reserve teams of other schools.
