Welcome / Chairman’s Message

Maintaining relationships and spending time with others is essential...

A

s we head into March, many new Club leaders will be taking up their positions on the Management Committee. I would like to emphasize the importance of Club leadership and how lucky we are to have so many leaders with excellent skills gained in their former professions.

I would also like to take this opportunity to encourage members to consider putting their hand up to serve their Club. A Management Committee is a team working hand in hand for the success of their Club and is a rewarding way to get more involved. The COVID-19 pandemic has taught us the importance of social engagement.

SO DO A FRIEND A FAVOUR –we have all come to appreciate each other’s company perhaps more than ever since the introduction of the COVID-19 restrictions.

faces, said hello to our coworkers and had lunch with at least one or two regulars. We talked about the news, movies, new places to visit or shared aspects of our lives.

When retirement arrived, we no longer have that familiar routine.

We are free to do whatever we want, and yet for some of us, with that freedom can come loneliness. This pandemic has shown it’s easy for us to stay at home and spend more time alone, especially if our mobility decreases.

Maintaining relationships and spending time with others is essential to our emotional and mental well-being. It can help prevent depression. In fact, some studies indicate 20 percent of the population over 70 years of age may suffer some form of depression. There are many causes, but it’s often made worse by the fact that people who were once active now spend much of their time alone.

I believe that this is the result of the hard work and commitment of Probus Club leaders, local membership teams and Association leaders who continue to share the word of Probus in their local community. I also express my appreciation to the team at Probus South Pacific who are there to support the Probus Community.

Finally, I would like to share that I am continually amazed at how some Clubs have overcome meeting restrictions and developed new ways of meeting. Recently I heard of one Club who are meeting in the open air with members bringing a chair and then having a sausage sizzle after the meeting. If your Club has experienced some challenges in returning to meetings, I ask that you keep thinking of new ways of gathering together, inside, outside, face-to-face or virtual – engagement is the key.

You can do something positive for a friend, neighbor Do you have a friend you or former work colleague – haven’t seen in ages or a introduce them to Probus, former work colleague or a either for your own Club or one neighbor you would like to nearby to where they live. It’s get to know better? all about sharing and caring! Why not invite them to a Probus meeting or Club outing (if restrictions allow) – you may be doing them a big favor by widening their circle of friends and interests. In our work lives, we regularly saw familiar

Spread the word about Probus - if only one in ten members brought a friend along to our Clubs, many more would be thriving.

Did you know that members of Clubs in Australia and New Zealand make up nearly 50% of Probus members worldwide?

CEO Message /

Welcome

We highlight a major milestone for Probus as the very first Probus Club in Australia celebrates their 45th birthday.

W

elcome to the March edition of Active Retirees.

In this edition we highlight a major milestone for Probus in Australia. On 3rd February 2021, the very first Probus Club in Australia celebrated their 45th birthday.

The Probus Club of Hunters Hill was formed on 3rd February 1976 - since its formation, it has helped hundreds of members enjoy Probus Fun, Friendship and Fellowship. With more than 90 members, the Club is just as strong today as it was all those years ago.

Volunteering builds community and self-esteem but more importantly, will help your Club reach many more milestones. As restrictions continue to ease across the country, so many Clubs are planning meetings and activities and the future is very bright indeed. Until next time

Successful Clubs are led by volunteers that provide their members with a variety of activities to suit their members’ lifestyles. It is such an amazing achievement for Hunters Hill Probus Club to have delivered this to so many members for over 45 years. It is a testament to their past and current Club Leaders. Many more Clubs will celebrate similar milestones in the coming weeks, months and years and I invite you all to share your celebrations with us so we can share them with your fellow Probians across Australia and New Zealand.

Health / Better With Age

Better With Age A healthy lifestyle is the key to staying fit, active and vital, so you can make the most of retired life.

W

hether you’re two years old or 92, we’re all ageing at the same chronological rate.

And while we can’t stop the clock, there’s plenty we can do to ensure we are healthy and vital, at any age. Heres your guide to ageing positively:

1

Staying In Shape

It’s often assumed that getting older means saying goodbye to the trimmer shape of your youth – but weight gain isn’t inevitable. “It’s true that your metabolism slows down a bit, but you can counteract it with lifestyle changes, and by perhaps eating a little less and exercising a little more.” Nutrition-wise, eating whole, unprocessed foods at every meal will automatically ‘crowd out’ less healthy foods from your diet. In terms of exercise, the national guidelines recommend people over 65 get at least 30 minutes of moderate intensity physical activity (such as brisk walking, swimming, dancing or tennis) most days of the week.

2

3

Our bone density gradually declines from around age 45 onwards, so maintaining our ‘bone bank’ reserves is vital to reduce the risk of osteoporosis, which is estimated to affect 23 per cent of women and six per cent of men over 50. Our calcium needs increase from 1000mg a day to 1300mg for women over 50 and for men over 70, so make sure your diet includes plenty of calciumrich foods (think dairy, canned salmon and sardines, almonds, tofu and dried figs). Getting regular bursts of sunshine is also important, as vitamin D (the ‘sunshine vitamin’) helps our body absorb calcium.

Protecting Your Brain

As we age, certain cognitive functions naturally decline, but on the flipside, some increase. “Speed or reaction time is one that declines, partly because we’ve got so much more in our heads, but our vocabulary and knowledge improves,” says Dr Nicola Gates, psychologist and author of A Brain For Life. As well as not smoking and moving more, giving your brain a workout is important. “The key thing is novelty or challenge,” advises Gates. For instance, you could pick a topic to research on the internet and become an expert on it, sign up for a community college course, or go for a weekly drive to explore a different suburb. MARCH 2021 ACTIVE RETIREES |

Maintaining Strong Bones

4 10

Staging A Disease Detour

Chronic diseases like type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, stroke and dementia become more common with age, but while we can’t change our genetics, we do have control over our lifestyle. “Even if you’re not able to avoid a chronic condition entirely due to genetic factors, you can minimise the impact or delay the onset with a healthy lifestyle,” adds Cyarto. She suggests taking the NARI Healthy Ageing Quiz, which can be found online, which reveals whether your current lifestyle is helping you age well. “It covers nutrition, activity, weight management, optimism and social connection, with tips on how to improve,” she says.

Health / Walking and Cycling Safety

Walking and cycling safely on shared pathways

A

shared path is an off-road area that is open to the public for use by both pedestrians and bicycle riders. Shared pathways can be identified by signs and/or pavement markings showing a pedestrian and a bicycle.

Walking and cycling on shared pathways are great ways to exercise but it’s important we keep ourselves and others as safe as possible. Kate Keogh, Road Safety Education Officer at Central Coast Council, interviewed Bard Haerland about his experiences using shared pathways.

Bard is a Central Coast resident who regularly uses shared pathways in his local area. There are 200 kilometres of shared pathways on the NSW Central Coast. Bard is the current President of Forresters Beach Probus Inc. and will hold this position until the second week of March 2021. He has been a member of the club since its inception in 2005. The Club currently has 195 members.

Where do you walk? Our walking coordinator arranges different locations – we try to go to new places around the Central Coast and even beyond our area. We’ve recently done the Kincumber to Davistown walk, which was lovely. What do you do to keep yourself safe when you’re using the shared pathways?

How long have you been regularly walking on local shared pathways? I have been a walking as a part of our Probus Club group for around 15 years. Who do you walk with? With other members of our Probus Club. We go for a walk around once per month most of the year, except in the hot Summer months. There are usually around 12 to 35 of us but, sometimes, it can be just three or four people. It all depends on what’s happening in people’s lives at the time.

We don’t go out if it’s raining or too hot. Our walkers are pretty good at wearing appropriate clothing and shoes. When a new member starts walking with us, we let them know if there’s any particular safety issues on a specific walk. Our members are aware of keeping to the left of the paths to allow others to pass by. During COVID, we’ve been conscious of social distancing and maintain our distance from one another. We use facemasks when we stop somewhere for a break and a chat. Would you encourage others to use them? Absolutely, I think they’re great!

What do you enjoy about it?

Did you notice any changes during 2020 with the COVID-19 pandemic?

I enjoy a lot about it. Firstly, getting exercise – it’s a healthy activity. It’s also a social experience with our group and it’s nice to say “hello” to others as we pass each other. I love the views too - there are some lovely walks in our area.

Everything has changed! The shared pathways are much busier than they used to be. There are lots more families – more than I used to see. There are many more young children riding bicycles. I see them having a great time. It’s wonderful! Everyone now has to make sure there’s space between each other and most people take this seriously.

Keep yourself and others safe on shared pathway Safety tips before you leave home

When walking on a shared pathway

When cycling on shared pathways

• Take your time and plan your outing – you’re more likely to slip or trip if you’re rushed

• Keep to the left to allow room for cyclists to pass

• Keep to the left

• Wear safe shoes with slip resistant soles

• Wear bright colours to increase your visibility, especially at dawn or dusk • If you use glasses or a hearing aid, wear them

• Your bike must have a working brake, bell or horn and a rear reflector • Check your bike every ride: (A) Air in tyres (B) Brakes are working (C) Chain intact

• Listen out for cyclists’ warning bells

• If you stop to talk, move off the pathway, or to the far left of the path • If you’re a bit unsteady, use handrails on stairs or ramps

• Keep dogs on short leads and under control at all times

• Ride in a predictable manner and always be in control of your bike • When passing:

- sound your bell

- pass on the right

- keep a one metre gap if possible

How Can Losing Money Be

A Good Thing?

G

Negative gearing is one of those financial buzzwords that we’ve all heard before, but might not understand. So what does it mean and how might it affect whether or not you should invest in property?

earing is when you borrow money to make an investment. If you are paying more in repayments than you are earning from the investment, then the investment is negatively geared. When it comes to properties, this means that if your monthly loan repayments are more than the rental income the property generates then it’s negatively geared. It’s often heralded as a fullproof income solution for property investors. Negatively gear your property and claim the financial loss associated with the property as expenses to offset your taxable income, all while your property’s value grows. But is there much substance to the claims, or is it modern day snake oil?

How to use it to your advantage

Negative gearing is essentially losing money, so how can people use it to their advantage? Bianca Patterson, Director at Calculated Lending Perth, says that it comes down to the tax deduction that can be gained. “People generally use negative gearing as an advantage because the tax deduction that they get from the property makes it easier to pay for and hold on to the property,” she said. But Patterson doesn’t see it as a reason to buy a house. “It’s not a reason to buy a property,” she added. “I wouldn’t suggest it as a strategy just for the tax deductions. I would say you would go down that path because there was a really good quality property that you wanted to buy, but just at this point in time it is costing you money to hold onto.” But if you find a good property and you have the income to support the purchase, negatively gearing can be a good solution for reducing the overall spend.

How can negative gearing impact your plans for retirement? Like any form of investment, there are risks involved in negative gearing. Negative gearing is great for people with a high income, but if you’re retired, then it can be a fairly risky option. If you don’t want to keep working, you probably won’t have the income required to make the tax benefits gained from negative gearing worth it. If you don’t have the income to sustain the repayments, you may find that you are losing more money than you can afford. Negative gearing relies heavily on the property’s value increasing over time. If this doesn’t happen, things can get very messy. Don’t stretch yourself too thin.

Finance / Losing Money, A Good Thing? Get a strategy

What are the alternatives?

Having a strategy in place is key to the purchase of a property. Before you buy it, you should know what you want to do with it, said Patterson. “You need to have an end game in mind – you really need to know how long you’re going to be holding on to the property for and what the purpose of the property is.” You need to consider what you want to do with your property. You might want to renovate it and increase its value that way, or maybe you’re considering redeveloping on the land. Whatever the case, it’s necessary to have this in mind when buying the property and match it to your longterm life and financial goals. “As you progress on in age, you need to be sure that the decisions you are making are in line with what you want to achieve and when you want to retire,” said Patterson. “Is that property right for your stage of life and the types of income that you’re trying to achieve?” If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.

If you’re in or considering heading into retirement, negative gearing may not be the best option for you. But what are the other places to look for generating a source of income? “There’s lots of potential to buy property at below market value and add value to them by renovating or developing,” said Patterson. Finding a good property that has a high chance of capital growth is a great option for retirees, especially if you’re considering renovating to grow the value of the property. Positively gearing is when the property generates greater rental income than the value of the repayments. Getting a property like that can be a great solution. “In the long-term they could get a positively geared property that maintains itself. There are properties that provide a strong rental return, so you could positively gear them,” said Patterson. She also suggests talking to your accountant about increasing your upfront payment for the home, so that your repayments are smaller, enabling you to positively gear. The big lesson to learn is to know what you want and speak to the right people to help you get there. Negative gearing might be right for you, but it isn’t right for everyone, so don’t just get caught up in by the buzz.

Technology / Handle With Care

Handle With Care Unsure about what to do with your old technology products? There are a number of ways those gadgets can be put to good use, or at the very least recycled correctly to keep our environment safe.

W

e all have one of those cupboards at home – the one crammed full with out-of-date or broken electronic devices. Perhaps you’ve even made it one of your “New Year’s resolutions” to give it a good clear out once and for all. But what exactly should you do with old technology products? Here are a few ideas to help get you started.

1

Re-use Or Upcycle

Electronics make for particularly bad waste. Their toxic substances have the potential to poison both our soil and our drinking water, however, they can also contain rare and precious materials. With this in mind, it’s important you handle them correctly and sending them to a landfill is probably the worst choice you could make. You’d be surprised how you can re-use or repurpose old devices and their parts. Your old computer could be turned into a web server, or you could donate the computing power of your out-dated laptop to science. Old android devices make great audio players or gaming devices for the grandkids, or you could simply turn your old smartphone into an alarm clock or Skype phone. Old iPads (or any tablets) are ideal for digital photo frames too.

2

Pay It Forward

Why not gift your outdated devices to family, friends or strangers? Maybe there’s a community centre or local school that would be appreciative of a computer, laptop or tablet? There are a number of charities that will take old or broken computers and repair them to working order for classrooms or libraries. Otherwise you could offer your collection for free on websites such as Gumtree (gumtree.com. au) or Sell Buy Swap Free (sellbuyswapfree.com.au)

MARCH 2021 ACTIVE RETIREES |

22

– undoubtedly someone will snap up your unwanted treasure and put it to good use.

3

Sell, Sell, Sell!

If you’d like a bit of extra pocket money in return for your old devices, MacBooks or iPhones would be relatively easy to sell online. Try sites like eBay (ebay.com.au), or visit your local technology stores to see if they’d be happy to re-sell your device as a refurbished model.

4

Recycle Right

Finally, if all other options have been exhausted, make sure your old gadget gets recycled properly. Most councils offer recycling stations that will be sure to help out. Recycling Near You (recyclingnearyou.com. au/computers) invites you to type in your state, suburb, post code and local council before redirecting you to your nearest recycling station. TechCollect (techcollect. com.au) is another free, not-for-profit national recycling service for computers, accessories and TVs. Their website will also help you track down the best place to recycle all sorts of electronic waste.

Technology / How To Choose A Smartphone

How To Choose A Smartphone

W

hether it’s your first purchase or an upgrade, there is a lot to consider when choosing a smartphone.

But first, what is a smartphone? It’s a cell phone with advanced features that allow you to do more than just make phone calls and send text messages. And with an array of capabilities on offer, they can be personalised to suit any user.

Why do you want a smartphone?

The first step is to ask yourself why you want a smartphone. Are you after a more sophisticated device to keep in contact with family and friends? Perhaps you want something to make your everyday errands easier? This will determine what features to look out for.

Features

The smartphone market boasts plenty of styles and models, each with different capabilities. Here are some things you might want to consider:

• Screen Size: the largest screen on the market right now is 5.5 inches. These screens make for easier internet browsing, video calls and general everyday tasks such as texting.

• Camera: the camera quality of most smartphones is high enough that you might want to consider replacing your pointand-shoot. Look out for features such as dual and wide-angle lenses. • Voice Control: most smartphones come with voice command options that will allow you to dictate text messages and emails, and give you a break from relying on a touch screen.

Apps What distinguishes a smartphone from a cell phone is that you can download any number of software applications, also known as “apps”. Some of the more useful apps offer you maps, GPS, public transport timetables and health trackers. But really, the list is endless. There are even a number of apps that work with hearing aids to make the volume of sounds and voices coming from the phone louder with minimal microphone interference.

Tips

• Battery Life: ask the salesperson about battery life. You don’t want a smartphone that needs to be plugged in all the time.

• Anti-glare screen protectors help prevent eye strain and improve visibility for the visually impaired.

• Operating System: the two main operating systems on the market are Android and Apple. Android is available on more devices, which means it is often the cheaper option. Apple is usually the first to receive the latest apps.

• If you think you’ll find the process daunting, ask a family member or friend to go shopping with you.

• Durability: smartphones can be more delicate than their older counterparts. Ask the salesperson about wear and tear, and shop around for a good quality case and screen protector.

MARCH 2021 ACTIVE RETIREES |

24

• The latest models aren’t always the best, but they are the most expensive. Don’t base your decision on what’s new: let the features and capabilities determine what you go with.

R U OK? /

Health

Why your natter matters... and how asking R U OK? could change a life Give The Gift Of Conversation

3. Encourage Action

Ageing is not without challenges – health, relocation, loss, isolation, or difficulties completing tasks that were once simple – any of these can lead to us or our older friends, family members, or neighbours becoming disconnected from community and support networks. A simple chat can mean everything to a friend or loved one who might be struggling. Even if they seem fine, it doesn’t mean they are. Those in need of support might not always ask for it. That’s why you need to trust your instincts and if you’re worried about someone in your world, reach out and ask, “Are you OK?” Comment on the changes you’ve noticed and help them access support to stop small problems from becoming bigger issues. We all sometimes struggle with life’s ups and downs but by making time to support someone who is doing it tough you could change, or even save, their life. The health-promotion charity R U OK? has released resources to help senior Australians give the ‘Gift of Conversation’. We’ve extracted a few tips from the campaign resources to help you lend support to the people in your world who might be struggling.

Try and encourage them to think of at least one step they could take to help them lighten the load. You won’t always have the answers or be able to provide advice to the person. In fact, sometimes it’s better not to give advice. Some problems are too big for a friend and family member to solve and professional help might be needed.

The four steps to a meaningful conversation

4. Check-In

Try and get their agreement to check in again with them soon: “Do you mind if I drop by again soon to see how you’re travelling?” It’s helpful to follow up in a few days to see how they’re doing. This reinforces that you genuinely care and want to help. You can find more conversation tips and resources on the R U OK? website at www.ruok.org.au/yournattermatters

If you or someone you know needs immediate support, contact Lifeline, available 24/7, on 13 11 14 for free and confidential emotional and crisis support. You can find a directory of Australian services and supports at www.ruok.org.au/findhelp

1. Ask R U OK? You want your conversation to feel as comfortable and normal as possible. Pick a place (in person, on the phone, or online) where you’ll both feel comfortable. When starting the conversation, be relaxed and friendly in your approach. Let them know you’ve noticed a change and ask an open-ended question like, “You’ve seemed a bit out of sorts recently. How’s everything going?”

2. Listen

Be prepared to listen and have an open mind. Ask questions to learn more about how they feel, when they feel this way and what might help to improve the way they feel. Don’t rush or interrupt. Let them speak in their own time.

Scenic Rim Coach Tour

Rochedale Probus Club’s “escape” to South East Queensland’s Scenic Rim was a fantastic and fun trip!

Their Probus Outings for 2020 drought came to an end when in November a locally based tour company offered

Club members a free local five-hour coach tour around some of the sights of the Scenic Rim all while travelling in their modern Gold Class coaches.

Members ventured along the Mount Lindsay Highway, through Jimboomba and Beaudesert to the Wyaralong

Dam where they stopped for morning tea in the tranquil surroundings of the shore.

From Wyaralong Dam, it was a short drive through the refreshingly green surroundings of the Boonah

agricultural area, following the recent rains. They stopped in the centre of Boonah for a tourist meander down the main street, appreciating the ambience of the mid-20th century, or earlier, Queensland town architecture. Their return trip home was via the township of Peaks Crossing.

Get Motivated, Ladies Poem by Helen Paatsch, President Lake Colac Ladies Probus Club (VIC)

It was time to have a meeting

Of the inner sanctum team To organise the year ahead – Did we need a cunning scheme? We were pleased to see each other And many of us prattled And once or twice I must confess The President was rattled. She attempted to keep order But we all know very well She couldn’t stop us talking We had a lot to tell. But we did get down to business And planned the coming year In accordance with requirements So all will be quite clear Now nothing rhymes with COVID safe But rest assured “twill be In accordance with the rules and regs So we’ll all stay virus free!

Words Into Masterpieces Wildfire of Plainsong: Ode to Elaine Poem by Rod Garrett Northmead Probus Club (NSW)

Dawn drew away the covers A faraway flue met a subdued symphony.

Her image appeared in a sleep-filled mind Silky notes wavering though a mist of colour. As the image sharpened, The symphony waned Pianissimo.

And dawn – its aurora – glimmered through her. Dancing, brightening. A blush of colour, Around her hair, her clothes, her walls – Her canvas ***

Dark clouds gathered above the sad house Kicking her pride aside.

She searched and found Her symphony – its colours bold and complex Moving to its crescendo – its stirring finale. Trumpets – Skyquakes in the coming sunset. Saxophones – Mellow rich, deep; hugging around her. She is there – always

A wildfire of plainsong Where the tears Of her loved ones Hide.
