Dear Friends of the Monterey Museum of Art As an art museum firmly rooted in our mission to “cultivate curiosity,” we are always advancing ways to be a space of wonder and discovery. In reflecting on the 2020-2021 year, we are proud to have many accomplishments to celebrate. For much of the year, we continued operating under pandemic conditions offering virtual art experiences that provided much needed inspiration and connection for our community. We were able to significantly build on our capacity to use digital channels to deliver our mission, reimagine our offerings, and increase engagement with a rich lineup of virtual offerings. We were thrilled to welcome visitors back to the Museum on May 13, 2021 just in time for the summer exhibition series. Our successful “Re-start the Arts” campaign helped rebuild our organizational capacity and provided space to reflect on the power of art to “re-start” in the face of challenges and about museums as places for thinking, curiosity, discovery, and inspiration. We are honored to be able to do our work, and we celebrate each of you for your support of the Museum and for all you do to contribute towards uplifting and inspiring our community through art.

COLOR DUETS: Kaffe Fassett and Erin Lee Gafill offered a look at the artistic and familial connection between the artists through their works. The exhibition also included personal hand-crafted items and displays—set up to give visitors a glimpse into their creative home.

Cultivating Curiosity in the Visual Arts During the year, the Museum presented 18 exhibitions showcasing California artists and the collection through virtual and hybrid virtual/in-person presentations supplemented with artist talks, workshops for all ages, and more. After nearly a decade of laying the groundwork, the Museum’s collections of California Art and Photography are now available online through its interactive Web Kiosk database, making images and detailed information about its renowned collections more accessible to the public than ever before. In addition, many object records are accompanied by engaging narrative content contributed by CSUMB Professor Emerita of Visual and Public Art and MMA Trustee Lila Thorsen.

“When my husband and I moved here from San Francisco five years ago, we immediately became members of MMA. I wanted to make real connections with other artists and art lovers—and am still amazed at the depth of the artistic friendships I have made here. I wanted to learn about the artistic history of this magical spot on earth—and also to get to know the contemporary art makers and art lovers here. We try to attend every art exhibit opening at MMA— and I would never miss contributing to the Miniatures exhibit! MMA SHOWCASED a number of works from its permanent collection, through presentations such as the William F. Ritschel Memorial. The Museum also made its collections of California art and photography accessible online. 55
ARTIST WHITNEY AGUIÑIGA offered a virtual tour of her works on display in Currents + FLUX, as well as a virtual talk and demonstration where participants were invited to create “pots in protest.” 6 6
Engaging the Community with California Art While the Museum was closed for in-person visits during much of the year, the Education and Public Programs team rose to the challenge by developing creative and engaging virtual programs for students, families, artists, and the public of Monterey County and beyond. Our virtual school tours, offered free to Monterey County schools, were designed with California and National Core Standards for visual art and remote learning models in mind to support educators’ curriculums and virtual classrooms. From Virtual Free Family Fun Days, Virtual Artist Talks, and Color Duets Virtual Drop-In Workshops, to the Arts Access Digital Studio, programs enhanced patrons’ enjoyment of the arts and knowledge of important California artists and their works.

Education Highlights MMA hosted its 3rd Annual Art of the State Symposium on January 9, 2021 with a theme of “Change = Action/Time” focusing on the generational activism of Chicanx and Latinx artists in California. MMA presented five Virtual Free Family Fun Days with art lesson plans, live virtual art workshops, and videos in English and Spanish; eight school tours serving 188 students, two in-person summer camps at MMA La Mirada; and weekly virtual programming by Erin Lee Gafill in conjunction with Color Duets. The Great Pumpkin Drive at MMA La Mirada featured 63 pumpkin creations donated by the community and local artists as well as an ofrenda to honor loved ones. The 450 visitors filled two large food barrels to the brim for All-In Monterey’s pantry. The Museum participated in the All-In Halloween event at Seaside High School which served 1,500+ children and adults. MMA sketchbooks were distributed to 200 participants and donated pumpkins from the event were given to an animal shelter as feed for pigs and goats. Gretchen Andrew served as Artist in Residence at MMA during her exhibition, Future News, hosting virtual open studios and other public programming.
WHILE MMA'S DOORS WERE TEMPORARILY CLOSED, the Museum adapted key programs, such as its school visit program for K-12 classrooms, to a virtual format to ensure arts programming remained accessible. 9
MMA PARTNERED with All-In Monterey for two community celebrations, which resulted in the filling of several food barrels for All-In Monterey’s pantry, festive pumpkin displays for 2,000+ children and adults, and free sketchbooks for 200 participants.

“One of the things I really love and value about museums like the Monterey Museum of Art is that it’s a place you can go and be in public and sort of be in private at the same time. You can have quiet and space to look at art and to experience art but you’re still in public. You’re able to present yourself in relationship to the work, you’re able to smile at your neighbors, you’re able to be connected to a community but it isn’t like being on a Zoom call. It isn’t like being on Instagram and it’s not like going to a concert or a party. Membership and Visitor Engagement As soon as the Museum reopened for in-person visits in May 2021, it was apparent that our community was ready to engage with the arts. Between May and June, we welcomed 3,783 total visitors including 1,054 MMA members, a rate that exceeded pre-pandemic levels. Throughout the year, however, visitors continued to access our virtual programming as demonstrated by the more than 4,000 views of program-related videos posted on MMA’s Vimeo channel. Due to the popularity and greater geographical reach of virtual programs, a combination of in-person and online programming has great potential to expand audiences going forward.
Membership Highlights MMA offered a special members-only weekend to celebrate its summer exhibition series before reopening to the general public on May 13, 2021. Exclusively for members, five Virtual Mondays live events featured guest speakers including art historian and Trustee Lila Thorsen and MMA staff. The annual members’ exhibition, Miniatures, received more than 150 donated artworks, which raised funds to support the Museum's exhibitions and programming. The Museum ended the fiscal year with a total of 1,450 members (910 households), and we are so thankful to members for joining and renewing their memberships—even when physical access was limited.
