From the Executive Director

As I write this, our five-person Collections and Exhibitions team is hard at work “turning over” the Museum’s galleries in preparation for the upcoming Winter Season which officially opens on Friday, January 20, 2023. Between now and then, much like the arrival of our seasonal rains, the Museum will undergo a complete transformation.

MMA’s popular fall season, a celebration of diversity of medium in California’s creative community, showcased Chris Johnson’s explorations in photography, Michelle Yi Martin’s ephemeral fiber weavings, and the varied printmaking styles of artists like Kerry James Marshall and the Gee’s Bend Quilters from the Paulson Fontaine Press. It was gratifying to see so many Museum Members and their guests attend these exhibitions and participate in associated public programs.

As each fall exhibition closes, our installation team will carefully remove the artworks and pack them to be shipped back to lenders or returned to museum storage. At the same time, our registrar will complete condition reports as they track everything coming in and going out. Once the galleries are empty, our preparator will patch and paint the walls, working closely with our Collections and Exhibitions Director, featured artists, and guest curators to hang and light the incoming art. Final touches will include placement of labels and didactics and a thorough cleaning of the space. Although Members rarely see this process, it’s vital to your enjoyment of our Museum—and an important part of what your generous donations help to support.

I hope you will plan to visit our winter season (and bring all your friends) which celebrates the beauty of nature as expressed by generations of regional artists. The thematically linked exhibitions will present 19th – 21st century paintings, drawings, photographs, ceramics, sculpture, illustration, and even furniture inspired by nature, while also revealing the dazzling range of artistry that this region cultivates.

I am so pleased that the Museum is exhibiting the extraordinary work of five women—Elizabeth Barlow, Susan Hyde Greene, Jane Kim, Susan Manchester, and Diane Pierce. Each brings their own bold and singular artistic vision to the season.

It is my belief that these exhibitions will inspire you even more deeply to preserve and protect Nature and Art in our region—fragile ecosystems that have been placed under intense stress and require conscious and caring stewardship.

Presenting Winter 2023

The Monterey Museum of Art’s Winter Season premiers this January with four synchronous exhibitions. Covering an array of subjecthood, technique, and artistic intent, the season is unified by themes of impermanence, preservation, and hope. The full season is led by Monterey Collects California and Flora Fauna, two exhibitions curated to include the Museum’s permanent collection in surprising and interconnected ways.

Monterey Collects California

January 19 – April 30, 2023

Monterey Collects California presents a contemporary survey of pre-1945 California Art, drawn from over a dozen private collections and curated with select works from the Museum’s permanent collection. Recognizing the artistic impact of the pre-1945 era on the Monterey Peninsula, the exhibition celebrates

the collectors in our community whose long-term stewardship has helped advance the legacy of California Art. Featuring select works rarely seen outside of private collection, Monterey Collects California expands on our region’s widely recognized history to present pre-1945 California Art as seen and experienced by the diverse community that activated it. The display includes a variety of painting, printmaking, sculpture, and furniture by artists such as Maxine Albro, E. Charlton Fortune, Armin Hansen, Xavier Martinez, Chiura Obata, Gottardo Piazzoni, William Ristchel, and Peggy Worthington. Composed of sweeping landscapes and anecdotal highlights, the described selection offers unexpected dimensionality in the form of illustrative and figurative painting, varied sculpture, and wistful photography, further identifying a vibrant stream of creative consciousness that has attracted artists to California’s Central Coast for over a century.

Monterey Collects California is on view January 19 – April 30, 2023. Please visit montereyart.org for more information.

The Monterey Museum of Art is deeply grateful to the dozens of area collectors who opened their doors to us to share their hidden treasures and subsequently make this unique exhibition possible.

Flora Fauna

December 8, 2022 – April 16, 2023

Flora Fauna presents a visual celebration of the natural world centered around the work of two Carmel based artists, Elizabeth Barlow and Susan Manchester. The stunning display is characterized by Elizabeth Barlow’s original oil paintings and Susan Manchester's mixed medium drawings, set in conversation with over a dozen flora and fauna inspired works from the Museum’s permanent collection. The exhibition includes works by Hector Dionicio Mendoza, David Ligare, Wayne Thiebaud, Mark Adams, Penelope Gottlieb, and Loet Vanderveen, and select loans from the Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History. Examining how representations of the plant and animal kingdoms have evolved over the last three centuries, Flora Fauna looks beyond the frivolity of artistic muse to suggest a more reciprocal and imperative relationship informed by the effects of climate change and the resulting vulnerability of our region’s own unique and treasured ecosystems. Beneath the surface of their near perfect semblances of beauty, Elizabeth Barlow and Susan Manchester share a reverence and concern for the natural world that sustains their work and permeates the exhibition.

Exhibition Highlight

Elizabeth Barlow’s Mornings at La Mirada

"I first stepped into the La Mirada Rose Garden in 2018 and was instantly cast under a spell. It has all the qualities needed for a secret garden — stone walls, heavy, creaking gates, winding paths — and an expanse of lush roses set against a background of Monterey cypresses and the bay beyond.

When planning my paintings for Flora Fauna, I immediately knew I would create a portrait of the La Mirada Rose Garden.

In Mornings at La Mirada, I created a portrait of this historical place and also a portrait of Presence — symbolized by the roses."

Jane Kim: Migrations

January 13 – March 26, 2023

Jane Kim: Migrations presents the work of celebrated San Francisco based muralist, fine artist, and science illustrator Jane Kim. Kim has created large-scale public art across the country including the Migrating Mural campaign − a series of public installations that highlight wildlife along migration corridors shared with people. By blending art and science, Kim tells a visual story about living organisms, seasonal changes, and the integral relationship between humans and nature. Jane Kim is the founder of Ink Dwell, a studio in Half Moon Bay focused on creating art that explores the beauty and complexity of nature.

Kim: Migrations

“Our planet is home to incredible and wondrous life. I feel most excited, both visually and intellectually in nature. Combining that with my passion for art leaves me with unrefined excitement and sharing even a fraction of that with the rest of the world is the best gift that I know how to give.”

Constructing the Photograph:

Diane Pierce and Susan Hyde Greene

January 12 – April 16, 2023

Constructing the Photograph:

Diane Pierce and Susan Hyde Greene presents the work of two California photographers who employ different working methods – cutting, stitching, reassembling, re-photographing – to reimagine

the photographic medium. Diane Pierce and Susan Hyde Greene both transform the permanence of photography to create works that explore temporal identity and the dimensionality of material.

Exhibiting together for the first

time, Constructing the Photograph highlights the singularity of each artist’s imagery and the individuality of their respective processes.

Acquisition Highlights

Gifts from Enrique Martínez Celaya

The Museum has acquired two artworks by Enrique Martínez Celaya, The Marker (2022) and The Nursery (2010). Gifted by the artist in honor of Robinson Jeffers, the donation commemorates the success of Monterey Museum of Art’s Summer 2022 exhibition The Fire of Heaven: Enrique Martínez Celaya and Robinson Jeffers. The

works, a small painting and a work on paper, recall Martínez Celaya’s artist residency at Robinson Jeffers’ Tor House in Carmel and a career long interest in the late poet’s life and writing. Remaining together in Monterey, the works will continue a dialogue that offers greater context to their relevance and connection to our region.

The acquisition of Martínez Celaya’s work enriches the scope of the Museum’s contemporary collection and signifies a valuable connection to a formidable and burgeoning star in the world of art.

Collection Highlight

Harry Fonseca's Saint Coyote #1

For the Maidu of Northern California, and many other Native American peoples, the coyote occupies a special place in myth and folklore as a highly intelligent but often reckless shapeshifting trickster and creative cultural hero. Predating man on earth, the coyote is considered the instigator of human arts. The Sacramento-born artist Harry Fonseca (1946-2006) was of Nisenan Maidu, Hawaiian, and Portuguese heritage, and in the Coyote series for which he is perhaps best known, Fonseca transformed this iconic Native American mythological figure into a contemporary and comic manifestation of the mythical troublemaker. In the Museum’s painting, Saint Coyote #1, we see a beatified version of Coyote in blue jeans, high-top sneakers, and a black leather jacket, coolly floating upright in a heavenly setting, surrounded by what might be interpreted as adoring coyote cherubim. In this instance, it seems as though he has somehow found his way from Native American mythology into western Christian religious iconography. The question now that he finds himself there might be, “what will he do next?”
