THE ONE y Sottero & Midgle Bridal gown, Clarice’s
One of the first things a bride-to-be does after becoming engaged is shop for her dress. Finding the perfect wedding gown sets the tone for her big day. No matter what the situation, when she has found “the one,” a bride knows immediately, before the dress is even zipped or buttoned. That “a-ha” moment can make the planning ahead seem just a little easier. Keeping the dress search in mind, Saint Louis Bride is focusing on fashion in this issue. “Beyond the Dressing Room” (beginning on page 164) is an amazing seventeen-page fashion essay, which was actually photographed in the
& Country Bridal and Formalwear and The Ultimate Bride. The two-day shoot went smoothly thanks to the bridal stylists at each of the salons who took the guesswork out of what dresses and accessories would look the best on each of our “brides.” It was a joy working with each of them from the moment I pitched the
Essence of Australia gown, The Ultimate Bride
idea to finishing up the written details and credits. I can only imagine how Anette Annalise gown, Bridal Parlour
wonderful I would feel as a bride-to-be looking for my dress and it is my sincere hope that as you page through this issue, you might find “the one!” Enjoy.

“We often don't get to meet the boutique owners and see all they have to offer, so it was a fun challenge shooting in these beautiful and unique spaces. We could tell they take pride in their salons and want to create the best experiences for their clients.”
2 1 SARAH WHITE-KLUMP White-Klump Photography began as a mother-daughter team in 2006 with their main focus on capturing every emotion and detail with an artful eye as to provide their clients with an unforgettable experience that allows them to relive the day over and over again! “Being able to shoot at the actual bridal boutiques we hear so much about was an absolute dream. Not only did we get to meet all of the fabulous owners, but we also got an inside look at all of the designs they have to offer—not to mention the amazing experience they offer to brides.” Sarah, assisted by Michelle Schwartz, photographed

2 MICHELLE SCHWARTZ Michelle joined White-Klump Photography after having her own photography business and has loved photographing weddings, fur babies, architecture and local food for over a decade. Michelle assisted Sarah White-Klump in photographing our cover and fashion spread, “Beyond the Dressing Room,” beginning on page 164. “We often don't get to meet the boutique owners and see all they have to offer, so it was a fun challenge shooting in these beautiful and unique spaces. 3 SARAH LAKE & KATIE MCCURDYMONTGOMERY Over 10 years ago, Sarah and Katie were both chosen to attend training with Alterna Haircare to become educators. They walked in, not knowing what to expect, or even knowing each other. After training they were very excited and happy to be Educators and start sharing the Alterna love together. They have the love and passion for making people look and feel their best, and decided to
use their knowledge and skills to create Blissfully Beautiful Bride, an on location bridal business providing hair and make up services. They come to their brides or can be visited at their full service salon, Bliss Beauty Bar where brides and their maids can get ready in their private bridal suite! Their private bridal suite includes a food & beverage bar, changing room, styling bar, make up bar and seating area. This is their first contribution to Saint Louis Bride.
4 BRADY NANCE Brady began her company, Brides by Brady, in 2012. She did the hair and makeup on day one of our fashion shoot, “Beyond the Dressing Room,” beginning on page 164. “Both our models, Natasha and Hanna, had unique looks and I wanted to enhance their natural beauty. I used romantic, soft pallets and cream blushes to create bridal magic!” This is Brady's second fashion feature with Saint Louis Bride.

“I grew up in Nebraska and met Brendyn in Omaha while attending Creighton University. I moved to Brendyn's hometown, St. Louis, in the fall of 2015 and when we made the move I fell in love with all the magnolia trees surrounding the city. When planning our wedding it was important for us to incorporate these magnolia trees that connect me to St. Louis. We had custom magnolia leaves hand calligraphed as escort cards for each guest that we displayed on a wooden arch during cocktail hour. Also, we had a floral garland spanning the length of our head table with magnolia leaves weaved throughout. It was very sentimental to see something so small with such a personal connection make a big impact to our family and friends.”—HOW THEY PERSONALIZED THE EVENT

“Everyone was encouraged to wear masks or take one that were left sitting around. All of the guests thoroughly enjoyed this as it was the weekend before Halloween. Most of the decor was rustic glam with a hint of fall. Pumpkins were carved and set around the outside of the building. Inside pumpkins were painted and reminding everyone it was Halloween. The centerpieces on each table were a special part of the decor. Each centerpiece was made up of vintage bottles. The bottles were collected by the mother-of-the-bride's father (who passed away about 40 years ago). They had been kept by the bride's grandmother in the attic for all of these years and finally brought out and enjoyed.” —HOW THEY PERSONALIZED THE EVENT

“Scott's family is Polish, so the tradition walking into the wedding reception is for every guest to take a shot of wine and whiskey and say "Na Zdrovie" —which means "Cheers" in Polish. “In California, we had a cake made to match my dress, cookies made to look like my fur babies Pancake and Lola, our musician, Michael Tiernan, learned to play the theme from UP for my walk down the aisle, we had an UP house, signature drinks, a taco bar, all of the personalized gifts we gave out, the list can go on and on. There were just so many details, and each thing we wanted to make our own. In St. Louis, we kept a few things from CA to transfer to St. Louis, our photographer and planner surprised us by having our California pictures all on display, Warren’s “Sweet Beautiful Aunt Terri” made us a beautiful cake that resembled ocean waves, and our pups made it to the photo shoot beforehand!” —HOW THEY PERSONALIZED THE EVENT

Real Moments Kara & Tim November 17, 2018 PHOTOGRAPHED BY L PHOTOGRAPHIE
“We first chose The Missouri History Museum for not only the history and beautiful architecture, but for the Spirit of St. Louis Airplane that represented Tim’s profession of being a pilot. We were transported by the St. Louis Trolly company to other historical sites in Forest Park for our pictures and we chose The Chase Park Plaza as our hotel accommodations for us and our guests. At the museum, we wanted our guests to have other entertainment so we had the World’s Fair exhibit open as well as The Muny Memories. Lastly, Tim and I maintain honeybees so we incorporated bees into our historical theme. Bees were placed in various places such as our personalized monogram, our invitations, and then we used jars of honey from our beehives as table assignments.” —HOW THEY PERSONALIZED THE EVENT

“Give your vendors space to create something new!!! It's so much more fun to create your own vision from scratch than replicating what's already out there, and I was so lucky to have a team that embraced this challenge. Instead of asking a vendor to replicate what you've seen on Pinterest, use Pinterest to get a sense of what's been done, and then ask your vendors to specifically create something that's not easily found online. We mainly used Pinterest to collect images of paintings and architecture from the time period we wanted to evoke, and I am still in awe of how my vendors made that vision a reality.” —ADVICE FOR BRIDES-TO-BE

“Matthew was born in Scotland, so we worked to incorporate a lot of Scottish touches to our ceremony and celebration. We had a hand fasting ceremony with each parent bringing a symbolic color up, we were escorted into the ceremony and reception by a bagpiper (a surprise for our parents!), Matthew’s family wore kilts in their family tartan, and we used the same tartan for decorative flourishes throughout the rest of the décor. AIRING LIGHT coral and peachy shades with neutral patterns and brighter fruit tones accented the natural wood of the
barn and gorgeous greenery. It was important to allow the beauty of the stunning blonde horse, the sun-kissed hills, and the restored historic barn to shine in all their glory by simply enhancing what already existed. The barn has a cathedral feel with the high wooden beams and stunning chandelier and we chose a candle lit ceremony to showcase the mood and romantic vibes that it offers. The modern, intimate, carefree and airy style could not have been more perfect for these lovebirds.

OMANTIC GETAWAYS are often portrayed with couples sipping
Schellhase from Travel Haus St. Louis says that nowadays newlyweds want more out of their honeymoons. “The top thing that couples ask for when they book a trip with us is a travel experience.” When the sand loses its luster and you find yourself longing for more, add a bit of flavor with fun excursions like hiking, snorkeling or zip lining. Visit these classic luxury destinations and create your own romantic adventure.

KAYAKING IN JAMAICA
Excellence Resort at Oyster Bay
116
It’s no secret that Jamaica is a captivating paradise. Its awe-inspiring sunsets, white sand beaches, and lush mountains are made only more inviting by the warm, friendly smiles you meet at every turn. Relaxing in the sun is absolutely on the agenda, but if you want to really take it all in, then hop in a kayak to explore this beautiful island from the water. Venturing out across the waves—just the two of you—has a romance all its own. The splash of the paddle as it dips into the aquamarine waters, the gentle Caribbean breeze blowing through your hair, the thrill of setting out on your own. It’s the perfect remedy to a sun-weary stupor. Schellhase recommends a stay at the Excellence Resort at Oyster Bay. It’s a private peninsula of all-inclusive, adults-only luxury—and a great home base for a kayaking adventure. It sits in the tropical paradise surrounding the stunning Montego Bay, providing easy access to discover the gorgeous bay and its local mangrove lagoons. (Tip: Try a night kayaking adventure to experience the glowing waters of a bioluminescent lagoon. Jamaica is one of the few places in the world to see this incredible phenomenon.)

Basilisk Lizard Camouflaged in the Forest, Costa Rica
Ziplining through the cloud forest of Monteverde, Costa Rica
ZIP LINING IN COSTA RICA Tropical beaches, mountainous volcano, lush rainforests—Costa Rica has it all, plus more. The Guanacaste area, in particular, delivers a honeymoon experience like no other. Awaken your adventurous spirit by rafting through the rainforest on a wildlife safari or trekking through the jungle. Or for a primal “Tarzan + Jane” experience, dare to soar over the trees on a thrilling zipline ride. There’s nothing quite as exhilarating as that weightless feeling of flying through the air. Sail over forest canopies, gorgeous waterfalls and unique wildlife, taking in views that only the birds get to see. Exploring the island from above is something you’ll never forget. Once you’re back on terra firma, take a romantic horseback ride along the gorgeous beaches at sunset before heading back to your all-inclusive resort. Schellhase suggests Secrets Papagayo. A 5-star, adults-only retreat with tranquil beaches surrounded by lush tropical gardens, this resort delivers one of the most intimate and romantic settings in Costa Rica. After a day of wild adventure, treat yourselves to their world-class spa before ordering from their 24-hour room service menu and enjoying a delicious dinner from the comfort of your private terrace. ATVs on the beach in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico
OFF-ROADING IN PUERTO VALLARTA Just saying the words “Puerto Vallarta” conjures up images of cloudless skies, blue-green waters, authentic Mexican food and shopping along the cobblestone streets of the Romantic Zone. All of that should be on your honeymoon to-do list, no question. (And an ocean-view room at the all-inclusive Grand Fiesta Americana is a private paradise.) But if you want to see the natural wonders of Puerto Vallarta like never before, then taking your honeymoon off-road is the way to go. 118

Cinque Terre is at the heart of any Italian honeymoon. A cluster of five picturesque villages along the rugged Italian coastline, its distinctive and colorful houses hang from the cliffs and stand out brilliantly against the rocky terrain. With stunning views (and delicious fresh seafood), this UNESCO World Heritage Site provides some of the best coastal hiking trails in the world. To enjoy Cinque Terre hiking at its best, visit during the months of April and May. The spring storms have passed and the Mediterranean plants—like the gorgeous and aromatic bougainvillea—are in full bloom. There are several paths for any level of fitness ability. Whether you take the 1k well-paved “Way of Love” Trail, the 3.5k Riomaggiore Ring Trail, or you climb the steep ascents from Vernazza to Monterosso, you’ll get spectacular views. After an invigorating day of hiking return to your room at La Torretta Lodge in the village of Manarola. The rooms are set inside an ancient tower with terraces offering even more amazing views of the bay. Pour yourselves a well-deserved glass of champagne and toast to a romantic honeymoon filled with adventure. ♥

NSPIRED BY OUR models, Kenzie and Andrew, our goal was to showcase them in a beautiful, intimate setting right here in Missouri that any couple hoping to elope could achieve. Given Kenzie and An-
drew's love of camping, breakfast foods, and their sweet nature, we knew that a sunrise elopement by the lakeside was absolutely perfect for them. The dusky sunrise brought rich colors and a chilly mist that was warded off by hot coffee and pancakes. Rich sunrise colors and some ethereal white kept everything soft and romantic. The ceremony space was simple, using August A. Busch Wildlife lake as a backdrop, we added just a few personal touches, like a hand-crafted arbor and some floral arrangements. To make it even more special, the couple read real letters they had written to each other the night before.

SAY IT WITH COLOR Finding the best hues for you BY NANCY L. SLADE PHOTOGRAPHY BY AMY MEYEROTT, SHADOW & LIGHT & JULIA NOACK, JULIA NOACK PHOTOGRAPHY
I
’VE BEEN OBSESSED with color analysis for many years. While some may laugh and say the whole “What season are you?” is so 1985, I’m hear to tell you that there’s something great about knowing your “wow” colors! Imagine taking the guesswork out of whether or not you should order the hot pink dress online or what jewelry is going to look best with that leopard print blouse? Wearing colors that harmonize with your “personal palette” will make you look younger, healthier, brighter and even thinner. I was delighted to learn color guru extraordinaire, Linda Davis with House of Colour, was going to be in St. Louis. And, on a moment’s notice, I was able to convince two of my amazing wedding industry friends to join me for a day of color know how! First, Linda did the draping process beginning with discovering whether we each had cool undertones or warm undertones. The process itself is fascinating. Then, we were each color draped in either warm or cool tones to determine our “season.” Amy was typed a winter, Julia an autumn and I was a spring. Julia admits to being a total skeptic until she

observed Linda’s color magic with me and Amy. “I could see the difference her complementary colors made for Amy’s complexion, especially bringing out her eyes. On Nancy, I was amazed at how much the spring colors brightened up her face and made her look younger,” said Julia. “During the draping, we each learned our “wow” colors - the colors that look the very best on us! “My “wow” colors are actually colors I thought I couldn’t wear. I was baffled that they were picked for me, but when I wear them I get far more compliments than ever before. I also didn’t think I was a person who could “pull off” red. It turns out I had been trying all of the wrong reds! I now love my red!” said Amy. At the end of each individual draping, Linda helped determine our best mineral foundation powder, blush and lipstick shades. This was called the “90-Second Makeup Miracle,” teaching each of us that in less than two minutes we can achieve a fresh, natural look in our color palette to compliment whatever we are wearing that day. We all agree after our color analysis session with Linda that we are gravitating towards our “wow” colors when shopping. Our personalized color swatch wallet has

LINDA DAVIS’ COLOR TIPS FOR BRIDES
1
The wedding colors are all about the bride! These colors create a backdrop that will
make your skin look healthier, eyes look brighter, teeth look whiter, and put you in your most beautiful light. Obviously your wedding dress color should be right. The bridesmaids dresses should be based on the brides coloring as well.
2
Be sure the mother of the bride and groom have a color option that will look
good on them! This is a big day for them too. Luckily, it isn’t hard to find shades in other seasons that will work well with your palette and compliment you both in pictures.
3
If you are using a makeup artist, supply your own colors. The wrong lipstick,
blush, eyeshadow or even mascara shade can have a negative effect.
4
The flowers are another fabulous place to bring in colors that will make the
bride look her best. Be sure to communicate the brides “style words” with the florist too. For example, one bride might have words such as pretty, soft, dainty, feminine and another might have words like bold, dynamic, sleek. This will help the florist put together something that you love, and that flatters you!
5
Don’t forget hair! If you color or highlight your hair and have discovered it’s too
warm or cool, your hairdresser

Color Tips “My “wow” colors are actually colors I thought I couldn’t wear. I was baffled that they were picked for me, but when I wear them I get far more compliments than ever before.” —Amy Meyerott may need a little time to correct the color. Because you hair sits right next to your face, it will have a big impact on the way you look and come across in pictures. The wrong shade can dull you down or make you look harsh.
6
Most people wear either yellow gold or white gold best. (A few colorings mix these
well). I tell all my clients...if they love the man to keep the ring, even if the setting color isn’t right!! But any other metal colors should go with you. This would include jewelry, metal on accents on eyeglasses, hair jewelry or metallic shoes.
7
If you are getting a spray tan for your honeymoon, make sure it’s the right shade -
especially if you are a summer or winter. Warm, golden tans work for many Springs and Autumns, but blue based colorings should look for facilities that offers multiple shades. Ask for a neutral beige color, nothing golden or warm.
8
I once had a bride change out the lightbulbs in her venue space. The bulbs cast
a very yellow light that was particularly unflattering for her coloring. While this isn’t a common need, it was an easy change that made a big difference in the way she looked and photographed. ♥ LINDA DAVIS, HOUSE OF COLOUR 913-689-8501 www.houseofcolour.com 134

YES, IT’S YOUR DAY. Your day to marry the one you love and be surrounded by those that love you—especially the nearest and dearest family and friends you’ve asked to be in your wedding party. Every so often, though, the relationship between bride and bridesmaid can be put to the test. HEN YOU HAVE a good thing going, stick with it. That’s why all three Singer sisters chose the same talented wedding planner, photographer, band and invitation designer. Then, each wedding told the couples’ stories through their own personal touches. Deborah and Sam shared their love of world travel, Ruth and Ari had surprise song serenades and Rebecca and Lior incorporated theatrical elements. Planner Simcha Lourie said, “Each Singer sister is truly unique and it was reflected in the style and design of their weddings. However, they share a strong connection to their Jewish traditions and their parents are wonderful role models for how to put love at the center of any celebration.” Simcha was thrilled to be a part of these three Singer weddings over the course of six years and loved getting to know this special family. As did photographer Liz Sloan, who said: “Deb’s wedding at The Muny is still my only wedding and reception to take place there. Ruth and Ari’s soiree at The Four Seasons was spectacular. And Rebeccah and Lior’s celebration was such a great finale. I’m really going to miss them!” 142

Trends and tips for outfitting the bridal party
WHEN IT COMES to selecting bridesmaid dresses, there’s really only one guideline…the bridesmaids should complement the star of the show, the bride. Whether that means matching, off-the-shoulder dresses or a variety of styles all the same color is completely up to the bride. “The bride is the star and the bridesmaids are her backup singers,” says Debbie Rudawsky, owner of Town & Country Bridal and Formalwear. “The focus should be on the bride at all times and the bridesmaids should complement her look.”

Earthy elements create unique feel to weddings BY A M Y Z I M M E R M A N

but more brides want to make their venues feel natural by using earthy elements as the backdrop for an elegant, romantic setting. But think more botanical garden than barn. “We’ve had brides ask for actual trees on the tables. Another wanted pergolas with greenery dripping off of them. Anything that brings greenery, natural color, and earthy elements into the venue is popular right now,” says Josie Littlepage, owner of Cosmopolitan Events. Littlepage and other wedding experts agree that couples are choosing to use greenery and other organic elements to create a more natural, romantic feel to their weddings. Many brides are finding creative ways to use greenery in their décor.

(left) Cosmopolitan Events teamed up with Belli Fiori and Decorum to create this indoor pergola outfitted in fresh, lush florals and suspended candles at Bellerive Country Club. (above) Belli Fiori transformed the World's Fair Pavilion in Forest Park with four amazing 14-foot handcrafted trees.
Boxwood is one of the most popular elements brides are using. Boxwood walls may feature a welcome sign and tiered candles on one side and place cards clipped on the opposite side. Once the guests are seated, the boxwood wall may be repurposed by adding some flowers and using it as a backdrop for photos. Or it may be used as a champagne wall with glasses of bubbly displayed on shelves against a background of boxwood. “We recently had a bride use a garden rose in a bud vase to hold the place cards and we displayed them on shelves with a boxwood backdrop,” says Jody Cox, owner and principal designer with An Affair to Remember. Lisa Molitor, owner of Belli Fiori, says floral and greenery structures are a popular way to add interest to a ballroom. “We just did a wedding with a large greenery arch with flowers to give a light, airy, organic feel. We’re also doing more columns which are unique and offer a different feel than a trellis or a two-sided structure such as a wall,” says Molitor. The soft green of the boxwood or moss or the grey-green of eucalyptus used in these structures provide the primary color for the reception with ivory, white, or peach flowers to enhance the look. “It’s such a change from a decade ago when brides wanted all flowers and no greenery. Now we use touches of flowers to soften but the greenery is the main focus,” says Littlepage. In addition to greenery, brides are incorporating wood and metallic elements. “Not like barn wood, but more of a sophisticated, elevated feel using tables and chairs,” says Molitor. And the barn-like mason jars used in centerpieces of seasons past have 156

been replaced with more elegant mercury glass and wood elements. Mixed metallics, once a no-no, are as accepted on a wedding table setting as they are with fashion. When renting flatware, many brides choose a soft gold and use a mercury vase as a centerpiece. Or they may use gold, bronze, and platinum cake stands. “Matching is out. Now it is all about mixing. We use copper, platinum, rose gold, soft gold. The idea is to create a more authentic feel, like you are walking into an oversized home instead of a wedding venue,” says Littlepage. The same is true with fabrics. “We have brides requesting fabrics with texture such as embroidered lace, microsuede, velvet, and brocade damask to place over the tablecloth to elevate the look,” says Cox. Cox advises brides to be wise about how they allocate their funds. Sometimes décor that appears simple and elegant may be more expensive than a bride anticipates. “Trends are great but it may be tough for a bride on a regular sized budget to know where her money is best spent. For example, instead of eating up half the budget on centerpieces, focus the impact on one visible area. The harvest table setting for bridal parties is a great area to really emphasize and scale back on the other tables,” says Cox. Regardless of how they are choosing to use natural elements, the goal seems to be consistent – brides want to create a classical, authentic atmosphere. “They want to know that in ten years when they look back at the photos they will be happy with what they chose because it is timeless and elegant,” says Cox. ♥

BEYOND THE DAY Consider spreading the love by donating to a good cause on your big day
N
OEL MARBARGER LOVED planning her wedding. But when it came time to decide on wedding favors, she wasn’t sure what to do. “You can get so wrapped up in all the details of your wedding. I wanted to do something that went beyond the day, something more mean-
ingful than a traditional wedding favor that may get left behind,” Noel said. In lieu of favors, Noel and her husband Peter made a donation to the Footprints Program at Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital (www.ssmhealth.com/cardinal-glennon/footprints-program), which helps children with life-threatening illnesses and their families. Their wedding planner, Josie Littlepage of Cosmopolitan Events, helped them choose a charity. “It was a great cause that many of our guests hadn’t heard of. In addition to our donation, it helped bring awareness to Footprints, and maybe it will encourage future engaged couples to consider doing the same thing.” (Continued on page 188)

Borrow wedding traditions and customs from other countries and cultures to celebrate your day BY J E N N I F E R C . F R A K E S

WWW.BRIDESTL.COM • FALL/WINTER 2019
WHAT WOULD YOU do if a guest on your husband’s side stood up during dinner to complain about the food? Or if your husband left the reception and all the male guests lined up to kiss you? Would your father appreciate a whale tooth given to him by his new son-in-law? These are wedding traditions in southern India, Sweden and Fiji, respectively, and may sound pretty strange to us Americans. But there are many other customs of weddings around the world that can be quite poignant and meaningful to any couple’s wedding day. Even if neither you or your husband-to-be has any history with a particular country or culture, you can borrow rituals and traditions that speak to you and that can make your day unique and memorable. Gauri and Fabian Johnston had a challenge before them in planning their wedding day— Gauri, the bride, is Indian, and Fabian is from Jamaica, and they were married in the United States. Gauri is Hindu and Fabian is Christian. “It was important to us that our wedding be representative of both our cultures and both our religions,” Gauri said. Gauri’s childhood temple welcomed both ceremonies, so they held both a Hindu and a ChrisFACING PAGE: (ABOVE) ©IBOM/SHUTTERSTOCK.COM (BELOW) ©FANTRAZZY/SHUTTERSTOCK.COM
tian ceremony there. Fabian was brought to the Hindu ceremony by singing and dancing family members, a custom known as the barat. The couple wore the traditional sari and Sherwani for the first ceremony, and changed to a white wedding dress and a tuxedo for the second. During Hindu ceremonies, people are not allowed to wear shoes in the temple. Everyone was shoeless during the ceremony, but Fabian’s shoes were the only ones that were stolen and hid, as per Indian tradition. The bride’s sister or bridesmaids steal the shoes and return them only after negotiating a price for them and receiving payment. Though it wasn’t an easy task combining so many elements of their different backgrounds and faiths, it was well worth the effort. Gauri said, “All 500 of our guests felt included and had a wonderful time. Even with the challenges, we learned so much about each other’s families and cultures and, in turn, about each other.” Marriage is wonderful, of course, but it’s also hard work. The German tradition of the cutting of the log demonstrates that very clearly. And it was an unforgettable and funny part of the (Continued on page 186)

flowers can symbolize important concepts or people. Schoene Kurlbaum, a Catholic, was marrying Rumi Mahmood, a man from Bangladesh and of the Muslim faith, and wanted to illustrate the blending of the two families. “I carried part of my wedding bouquet and Rumi’s mother was at the end of the altar area, holding the other half of my bouquet. Then, my mom and Rumi’s mom tied all of the flowers together to signify the union of the families, with their blessing.” Jennifer Ritter, the log-cutting bride, also incorporated flowers in a very meaningful way into her ceremony. A vase on the altar held greenery, representing the fullness in their lives from all their family and friends. Grandparents then approached the altar, adding a larkspur, a symbol of love, to the vase. Deceased grandparents were represented with yellow roses. The parents of the couple added red roses to represent faith, hope and love. An ivory rose was in memory of Jennifer’s deceased father. Siblings added irises, the symbol of strength, character and sincerity. Jennifer and Alex called this “The Family Blessing” and found it to be a wonderful way to remember and thank the many people who have shaped their lives. LET’S THROW A PARTY…AND FOOD! rice as the couple exits their wedding ceremony. (Though that tradition has waned since some thought the rice was harmful to birds that ate it. But it seems more likely that the bigger danger is guests slipping and falling on the rice-covered steps). Some brides carry a small bag of rice with them for the same hopes of good fortune, or the wedding couple may eat rice on their big day. In some English and French communities, people throw wheat over a bridal couple to wish them good luck. And according to Persian tradition, happily married female family members and friends sprinkle the bride and groom with

Thankfully, no throwing was involved, but at Schoene Mahmood’s wedding, dates were passed out during the ceremony. “The sweetness of the dates symbolized how we were all holding something sweet in our mouths, so we will be inspired to speak to each other sweetly,” Schoene said.
Eat, Drink and Be Married!
NOTHING SAYS LOVE...LIKE LUMBER Even before the “green weddings” trend, trees have been a part of wedding rituals across the globe. In Bermuda, islanders top their wedding cakes with a tiny sapling. The newlyweds then plant the sapling in their garden at home, where they watch it grow, along with their love and their marriage. In Holland, the bride and groom are seated on thrones beneath a canopy of fragrant evergreens. There, as well as in Switzerland, a pine tree is planted outside the couple’s home as a symbol of fertility and luck. Friends of the bride in the Czech Republic sneak into her yard to plant a tree and decorate it with ribbons and painted eggshells. Legend says the bride will live as long as the tree. On the day of the wedding in Denmark, an arch of pine, beech or oak branches is erected in front of the home of the bride’s parents as a show of respect. This “gate of honor” tradition is repeated on the couple’s 25th anniversary.

DANCE AND DINNER, DANCE AND DINNER Closer to home, Elizabeth and Tim Burroughs borrowed a formula from a Jewish wedding they had attended on the East Coast, though this structure is popular in many faiths in that region of the U.S. At the start of the reception, before the first course, the newlyweds did a toast and their first dance. Then there was a first course, and the dance

Gutierrez has helped several couples donate to a charity on their big day. Couples can display information about the organization they have chosen at a separate table, like the Marbergers, or have a framed piece at each table telling the guests about the donation, suggests Gutierrez. “Couples can have cards stating something like, ‘In appreciation of your love and support, we have made a donation to…’” Gutierrez said. “Also, the couple may mention the charity in their welcome remarks.” Couples can also make the favor itself representative of the cause to which they are donating. Michelle and Jaime Lembeck put pint ribbon pins at each place setting with a card explaining that a donation had been made to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation (www.komen. org). Jaime’s mother is a breast cancer survivor, so the cause was especially meaningful to them. “My mother-in-law could not have been more excited and honored,” Michelle said. also chose the Susan G. Komen Foundation as their charity. The couple had run in the Susan G. Komen “Race for a Cure” and had a photo of them at the race at each table, and a mention of the donation. Stephanie and Forrest Flichum also gave feelgood favors to their guests. They chose the environment as their cause, giving guests blue spruce tree seedlings from The Greenworld Project (www. greenworldproject.net). “We chose them because we wanted to give something that would last,” Stephanie said. “I also liked the idea because as a kid I was given a seedling for Arbor Day that my dad planted in the backyard. It grew into a beautiful tree that has been known as “Stephanie’s tree” ever since. I was hoping that our guests would have that kind of connection with these trees.” Some couples even go a step further and suggest organizations that are meaningful to them to donate to in lieu of wedding gifts. Lee and Stephanie Notowich chose three charities and let

This makes it possible for families to improve nutrition and earn money for health care, shelter and education. “We wanted the celebration of our union to not just be about the two of us and our families, but also about the global community,” Sarah said. Newlyweds Molly Kammien and Connor O’Shea went a step further and asked for donations to their favorite causes rather than traditional wedding gifts. On their wedding website, they each chose a charity meaningful to them and included it under their “registry” tab as an option for guests. They did it through crowdrise.com, an offshoot of gofundme. The couple is alerted when someone makes a donation to their chosen charities, and guests can choose whether to make the amount given anonymous. Molly is a lawyer who works with refugee and immigrant clients, so she picked the International Rescue Committee (rescue.org), which supports refugee rights around the world. The International Rescue Committee responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises and helps people whose lives are shattered by conflict and disaster to survive, recover, and gain control of their future. “We feel like we are very fortunate, and we have enough stuff,” Molly said. “Being able to help contribute to causes that align with our goals made our wedding even more special.” Connor is from Long Island and the ocean

Beautiful Bridesmaids (Continued from page 152) COORDINATING DRESSES Rudawsky says the biggest trend she sees is brides wanting the bridesmaids to be involved in the process of selecting the dress. “The bride has a clear vision of her color palette, but she wants the girls to pick a dress they love. She wants her bridesmaids to feel confident
and beautiful,” says Rudawsky. A bride may select a variety of dresses that fit her vision for her wedding. The dresses are typically the same color but have various stylistic details, perhaps a different neckline or skirt. Each bridesmaid then selects the dress she likes best. This could result in a wedding party with six different dresses or a combination of two or three dresses.
Working with a bridal salon is critical to accomplishing this look, particularly with regards to color. Color varies dramatically among fabrics and designers. It is important to identify the exact color the bride wants and focus on a designer that offers that color in a variety of dresses and fabrics. “For example, if she wants dusty blue and we find that color in the line of a particular designer, we look at all the dresses available in crepe from that designer in that color,” says Rudawsky. Then the bride may select from that set a variety of dress styles to make available to her bridesmaids. The bride and her party may return to the store together to begin the process of selecting dresses. Another benefit of working with a bridal salon is the custom service. All measurements and fittings are done by the salon staff. The salon serves as an advocate for the bride and her bridesmaids if there is a problem with the dresses.
“Low backs, fun backs, and off-the-shoulder are big trends in bridesmaid gowns and fit with the clean lines most brides are wanting,”

STYLE AND DETAILS Gone are the flowy, bohemian dresses of the past few seasons. Brides want cleaner styles. “Low backs, fun backs, and off-the-shoulder are big trends in bridesmaid gowns and fit with the clean lines most brides are wanting,” says Katie Surkamp, manager of Clarice’s Bridal. “Most of what we are seeing are clean cut, more structured dresses. Brides want long, elegant, timeless, sophisticated dresses for themselves and their bridesmaids.” “Off-the-shoulder is a huge style we are seeing and the romantic look has really taken off with brides and bridesmaids. Another popular trend is the bridesmaid dress with a high slit,” says Megan Rumsey, store manager of The Ultimate Bride. Embellishments such as beaded shoulders or a beaded belt remain popular but the sequin trend seems to be fading. Rumsey says she has seen a lot of embroidery on the runways, but the trend hasn’t hit locally yet.
on either side of the wedding party. The groom may have an important woman in his life who he wants to include in his party or the bride may have a special male friend she wants to include in hers. “We are seeing more of that and we help the woman select a dress to complement the suits or tuxedos the groomsmen are wearing or we make
sure the male member of the bridal party complements the bridesmaid’s dresses. The bottom line is, there are no rules anymore. Wedding parties aren’t required to have five bridesmaids in matching blue dresses and five groomsmen in tuxedos. Keep the focus on the bride and her vision for her wedding day and let the experts help make it a reality. ♥

COLORS Softer, pastel colors are popular for summer weddings, such as light blue, blush, and sage green but for winter weddings, brides are choosing shades of mauve, burgundy or maroon. Hunter green is a popular choice for winter weddings, as well as shades of grey, navy, or eggplant. FABRIC Velvet is appearing in many of the bridesmaid dress lines, particularly for winter. While some feature full velvet dresses, velvet accents also are popular. “We are seeing a mixture of fabrics, such as velvet with chiffon or a satin bodice with a chiffon or tulle skirt,” says Rumsey. Crepe remains a popular fabric choice. “We see a lot of crepe because it is a clean, simple look. Crepe is wearable and dresses may easily be worn to another wedding or special occasion,” says Rudawsky. Surkamp says she is seeing more brides using stretch fabrics, particularly with dress linings. Instead of a lining that doesn’t have a lot of give, using a fabric with stretch helps reduce alterations and makes for a more comfortable dress. NO RULES “My takeaway is that brides and grooms are most concerned about expressing who they are as a couple, including who is going to take part in their special day. If the bride wants to have five bridesmaids but the groom only wants three groomsmen, then that is what they do. It doesn’t have to be equal and balanced,” says Rudawsky. That even extends to having mixed genders

I had a beautiful dress that I had never worn, and my friend agreed it was perfect for the wedding. But the week before the wedding, the forecast called for rain. My friend then arranged to be married in a chapel. The wedding suddenly took a more formal turn. She wanted me to buy an expensive dress at the last minute, which I did not have the budget for at the time. I looked for a similar, cheaper option but found nothing that she approved of. My friend then asked me to no longer be a bridesmaid. I was tempted to skip the wedding altogether, but decided to attend. At the reception, the bride introduced her wedding party, and then introduced me, saying I would have been included but we had ‘bridesmaid issues.’ More like Bridezilla issues!” JUST ASKING TOO MUCH Sometimes brides can lose perspective and go a little too far with their requests. “I was a bridesmaid in

When I questioned the bride, she said they'll send gifts even if they don’t come. I ended up only inviting the ones within driving distance. I still had to send shower invites to everyone on the list, however, because the bride made sure to call everyone and tell them to expect an invitation.” Tina, a wedding planner, recalls a maid of honor who truly had to go above and beyond the call of duty. “It was an outdoor wedding, and the couple wanted to have their dogs there,” Tina says. “I assumed they meant two dogs. But there were eight! For some reason the couple thought all the dogs would just sit throughout the ceremony. That was not the case. Three of these dogs fought constantly. The maid of honor spent the entire time chasing the dogs around. She was really irritated by the end of the day.” BOGGED DOWN IN THE DETAILS The following bride may have been guilty of all of the above offenses. Melanie recounts this moneyed makeover she had to endure: “Since all of the bridesmaids were different heights, we had to have our dresses altered so that they were all FALL/WINTER 2019 • WWW.BRIDESTL.COM

The Bridesmaid’s Tales your wedding party to pay for expensive treatments,” Ellen said. “But if it’s important to you and you can afford to pay for them, the bridesmaids would definitely appreciate it.” IMPOSSIBLE TO PLEASE One bride dictated that her bridesmaids were responsible for throwing her a bridal shower,
a couple’s shower, the bachelorette party and a bridal luncheon. “Even though she has plenty of family that could host any of these, she decided that the bridesmaids needed to host all of these parties,” Stephanie said. “Most of us had just graduated from college and didn’t have a lot—or any—extra income. Then she proceeded to complain and criticize everything we did. The food

was horrible, we bought the wrong brands of drinks, we didn't have champagne at the bridal luncheon and we chose the wrong invitations. She was just so upset with all of us at every moment. I have no idea how we could have made her happy.” APPAREL ANGUISH The days of huge, shiny, puffy dresses with hoop skirts are thankfully behind us. There is still some apprehension among bridesmaids, however, about what they’ll be asked to wear. The dress is often beautiful, just not suited to every body type. “I was in a wedding with a friend of mine who was very full-busted,” recalls Erica. “The bride didn’t take this girl’s build into consideration at all when choosing the dresses. My friend had to buy the dress, which was $300 and then pay another $300 in alterations because the spaghetti straps and bodice couldn't support her frame.” But there are some elements of a dress to look for that can complement all body types. Mary Goodwin worked at bridal salons for several years and says that ruching (pleated, fluted or

gathered fabric) is always becoming. “And tea length is good for all heights and for weddings that are in spring, summer and fall,” Goodwin said. “Also, avoid a short shelf, especially for fuller-busted bridesmaids.” Is there a color that’s universally flattering? “Everyone looks good in black and black increases its wear-it-again factor,” said Goodwin. “Pewter is also flattering and bright pink is complementary for all skin tones.” She also suggests a V-neck, as long as the neckline is not too low, and letting bridesmaids choose from one of a few styles of the same color by the same designer. Sometimes it’s just a matter of practicality. “I was in a relative’s wedding in New Mexico in August,” said Ashley. “The dresses were fulllength, long-sleeved, black and white Victorianstyle. Not surprisingly for August, it was 90 degrees and very humid. The bride also insisted we all buy and wear real pearl chokers. And even the flower girls had to wear full makeup, which after about five minutes in the heat felt like wax melting down your face.” Patty, another bridesmaid, remembers a wedding where a problem arose that could have been easily avoided. “The bride chose stargazer lilies for the bridesmaid bouquets,” Patty said. “Two of the girls were highly allergic to these flowers and told the bride this ahead of time. But the bride insisted on them. These two bridesmaids sneezed throughout the entire ceremony, all the while getting dirty looks from the bride and her mother.” IT’S ALL IN THE APPROACH Most bridesmaids are willing to help out whenever they can. But asking politely and treating the bridal party with kindness can go a long way. “I've had brides insist on bossing me around throughout the whole process,” Carrie said. “I am more than happy to participate and help in any way. But when you treat me like an indentured servant, I have a problem with it. I’ve been sent to the store 30 minutes before the wedding to get drinks for the bus, ordered all over creation looking for the bride’s lost lip gloss, picked up people at the airport, ran for the tuxedos, shoes, dresses—you name it. And I really don’t mind doing it all if the brides are thankful and gracious.” GROOMZILLA? Occasionally, it’s the groom who can get out of hand. Jane is in a friend’s wedding whose husband-to-be is from, and living in, Washington D.C. His entire wedding party is also from the East Coast. But the groom decided he had to
have his bachelor party in Southern California. “The groomsmen who said they couldn’t fly across the country for the party were demoted— from groomsmen to usher or out of the wedding completely,” Jane said. Though not flying 3,000 miles for a bachelor party is a ridiculous reason to kick someone out of a wedding, sometimes it does make sense to
reevaluate relationships and roles. Ellen Gutierrez said that every so often she is asked by a bride in a somewhat-embarrassed, hushed tone-- if it ever O.K. to “fire” a bridesmaid. Ellen says unequivocally—yes. “Sometimes expectations on either end can be very different,” said Ellen. “Both parties are usually relieved and happier when they part ways.” ♥

mon thread to weave through everything from engagement photos to invitations to party favors can be a cohesive way to tie everything together.
2. A THEME TO TELL YOUR STORY Without overdoing it, create a theme for your entire wedding event. It may be as simple as a color palette or a vintage style. Choosing a com-
3. MEMORABLE MOTIFS Once you have your theme, choose some motifs to make things even more personal. Say you’re having a vintage eclectic theme, but you also
love dragonflies. Incorporate unique hand drawn dragonflies into your wedding! Hire a graphic designer to create the image and use it on your invitations or in a flower arrangement.
PERSONALIZE YOUR GIFT GIVING As the bride and groom, you will be the ones to receive the gifts. Remember how you spent all that time registering? But you will also be giving some gifts. Here’s a little help to get you track. BRIDAL PARTY This one is pretty much a given. You and your spouse-to-be should present gifts of your choosing to the bridesmaids and groomsmen. While most people choose the same gift for the entire party, it is totally cool to customize and personalize each version for the recipient. FLOWER GIRLS & RING BEARERS The youngest members of your wed-ding party are proba bly easy to shop for… you can just ask their parents what they are into these days. But something special that reminds them of their role in your big day will have sentimental value for you now, and for them someday in the future. PARENTS A little token of appreciation to your parents and his, just to thank them for the support and nurturing, is always lovely. Many people buy a mini-wedding album or have a family picture from the wedding day framed as gifts. SHOWER HOSTESSES An important one. These friends and/or relatives opened arranged a party in your honor, spent time to make you feel spe-cial, and did tons of coordinating to pull it off. It is very thoughtful for the guest of honor—You—to bring a little token of appreciation to the people throwing your shower. —Amy Fenster Brown

4. MONOGRAM IT Create a wedding monogram. Nobody else will have your monogram because it will speak specifically to your theme, motif, colors, and style! 5. HASHTAG GENIUS Create a wedding hashtag. It’s almost a mandatory part of wedding planning these days. A hashtag allows your wedding photos to be searchable on social media. Be sure to choose something unique, AKA not #MintToBe, since that will have many more results than only your wedding. Create signage (incorporating your theme/motif) that shows the hashtag at your wedding so that people can post photos using the hashtag in real time. Place your signage on your bar(s), at the entrance to your ceremony and/or reception, in the bathrooms (write it on the mirror in dry-erase marker!), put it at the bottom of the wedding program or wedding menu, etc.
groom mix their special flavor instead of cutting a cake), a beautifully displayed assortment of bite-sized desserts, a table of colorful macarons, in the fall you can roast s'mores (yes you can indoors!) or even consider having some kind of dessert food truck arrive to your wedding for a fun surprise.
10. BIG PICTURE A family photo display is a touch of nostalgia that connects your big day to weddings in your family’s history. Photos of you and your new spouse’s parents and grandparents arranged on a table or pretty shelf is a poignant and personal touch that Grandma will love. ♥
6. MOOD MUSIC Choose music that you and your fiancé love for both the ceremony and the reception. Songs that are meaningful to you both will add layers of memories to your big day. While ceremonies typically have more instrumental music, anything is fair game. 7. SPECIAL READINGS From a religious passage to a quote from your favorite author or an impactful music lyric, couples often like to share special readings as part of their wedding ceremony. It can also be a lovely way to include a friend or family member into your day in a meaningful way. 8. FUN ACTIVITIES Yes, the day is about you, but you’ve also invited friends and family to enjoy it with you. So, why not have some fun activities for them to enjoy—in addition to busting a move on the dance floor, that is. It can be something as simple as blank cards and pens at each table with a note asking guests to give their best marriage advice. Provide a dish (or vase or bucket—depending on your theme) for them to put the cards into once they’ve dispensed their words of wisdom. Or highlight your favorite pastime with a small hobby inspired craft or activity at each place setting. 9. DELECTABLE DESSERTS Cake isn't for everybody. If you never eat cake or you hate frosting, consider providing an alternate dessert that is more you. Maybe you love pecan pie. Slice it up and serve it to your guests with a dollop of fresh whipped cream. Or try an ice cream station (the bride and FALL/WINTER 2019 • WWW.BRIDESTL.COM
