City Botanic Gardens Brisbane’s riverside City Botanic Gardens was established in 1828 to provide food for what was then a penal colony. The Botanic Gardens officially opened in 1855 and curator Walter Hill embarked on a program to trial plants from around the world to discover those that grew best in the tropical climate. It was here that the first mangoes, paw paws, custard apples, pineapples, tobacco, ginger, sugar cane and coffee plants were grown. Today it is a beautiful park to stroll by yourself or with a one hour guided walk which leaves from the Rotunda at 11am and 1pm Monday to Saturday. Alice Street, Brisbane. brisbane.qld.gov.au

WALK THIS WAY B Get to know Brisbane and its surrounds like a local by walking its streets. By Kerry Heaney.

risbanites love to walk, and so will you, as you discover the city and suburbs. A long

walk is a chance to move slowly through the suburbs, stop at the vistas, listen to birds chatter and appreciate the flowers’ fragrance. Locals make good use of their walking

trails, so you’ll always have a friendly face to chat with and check your directions.

Most are shared paths so watch out for cyclists and keep to the left. It’s also a good idea to start

early, lather up with sunscreen before you head out, take a hat and keep hydrated with a water bottle on hand. Here are seven paths to explore.

CITY LOOP See Brisbane city from both sides of the river with a walk that starts with a stroll across the Victoria Bridge. Head left along the river walkway past the Performing Arts Centre and through the Cultural Forecourt where you’ll see the B-R-I-S-B-A-N-E sign. It’s an excellent photo spot. The Clem Jones Promenade leads you beside the river, but you can take side trails to discover the flower covered walkways and Streets Beach at South Bank. River Quay, where the grassy hill rolls down to the river, is an easy place to rest. Cross over the Goodwill Bridge towards the City Botanic Gardens and QUT. Follow the pedestrian path along the riverfront at water level, past mangroves towards North Quay. You can catch a CityCat for a relaxing ride up and down the river or walk to the Queen Street Mall for a spot of shopping.

RIVERWALK Brisbane’s Riverwalk reaches out over the water at New Farm for around 800 metres from the end of Merthyr Road to the Howard Smith Wharves. You can take a leisurely stroll and sit for a while under the shade on the pontoon. Start with breakfast and coffee at Moray Café, then head along the river under the Story Bridge and take a right at Ivory Lane. Follow the path to Bowen Terrace and take the clifftop walk until it joins Moray Street. There are lots of Queenslander and Art Deco style buildings to admire, and you can finish back where you started at Moray Café for another refreshing cuppa. If you don’t need to end where you started, take the City Reach of the Boardwalk which wanders 2.4 kilometres along the river bank right down to the City Botanic Gardens.

NEW FARM PARK New Farm Park is 15 hectares of flat parkland by the river in New Farm. It is always worth a visit but even more so in winter to see the blooming rose display and in spring when the Jacaranda trees create a delicate purple carpet. Add a Saturday farmers market and a children’s adventure playground into the mix, and you may not want to leave, but a 2.5-kilometre walk along the river bank to the Teneriffe Ferry Terminal will offer some delightful river vistas. Catch a ferry back to New Farm Park, and you’ll enjoy even more water views.

KANGAROO POINT Explore Kangaroo Point with this flat, 6-kilometre walk that starts at The Wheel of Brisbane by the Brisbane River at South Bank Parklands. From the South Bank Boardwalk, you’ll wander past River Quay Green and its collection of restaurants and cafés to the Goodwill Bridge. If time allows, stroll over the bridge and stop for a coffee at Brendan’s Café, which is almost in the centre of the bridge. The coffee and sweet treats here match the superb river view. As you continue back along The Cliffs Boardwalk, you’ll notice ships at the Queensland Maritime Museum and plenty of places to stop and rest for a while. The long flight of steep stairs leading up to Kangaroo Point Lookout will give you an extra workout if desired. Winding beside the mangrove-lined river bank, the path leads right around the tip of Kangaroo Point to Captain Burke Park and under the Story Bridge. At low tide, you can take stairs down to a sandy beach beside the river here. Further along the walkway, Medley Café & Restaurant offers another chance for refreshments. The walk continues to Dockside Ferry Terminal where you can take the ferry all the way back to South Bank.

NORTH STRADBROKE ISLAND.

REDCLIFFE Get your blood pumping with a walk along the Margate and Redcliffe foreshore from Pelican Park to the Redcliffe Jetty. There’s plenty of parking at Pelican Park, an area that is popular for kite sailing and jet skis. There’s also pelican feeding at 10am daily. Birds gather for up to an hour before feeding time, but the bucket of fish doesn’t last long so do not be late. The 7-kilometre walk to the Redcliffe Jetty also makes a great bicycle ride. You’ll travel past the Humpybong Yacht Club, the Woody Point Jetty and along the beach esplanade to Suttons Beach Park. Take Marine Parade as you get closer to Redcliffe and check out Settlement Cove Lagoon which has a huge swimming spot for children. As you head into Redcliffe, a mural on the left marks the start of Bee Gees Way. This open air museum celebrates the early years of the brothers Gibb, who started their musical career playing at the Redcliffe Speedway. Finish with a visit to the Redcliffe Jetty Markets (Sunday 8am–2pm) and a stroll along the jetty.

NORTH STRADBROKE ISLAND For a lung full of ozone-filled, fresh ocean breeze, it’s hard to beat North Stradbroke Island’s North Gorge Walk. The 1.5-kilometre trail winds around the cliff top and offers dramatic scenery as you walk along the cliff edge. You’ll need to take a ferry ride to reach North Stradbroke Island, but the chance to spot turtles, dolphins, and whales in season, makes it worth the extra effort.

FORTITUDE VALLEY HERITAGE WALK There is lots to explore in the Valley which was amongst the earliest part of Brisbane to be established. Today is known for its vibrant eating culture and night scene, but in the late 19th century it was the commercial and retail centre of the state. risbane’s ever-increasing retail and fashion offering means shopping is a must to fit into your itinerary. Bountiful buys for the savvy shopper range from a vibrant market scene and high street stores, to high-end international designer boutiques. The strength of the city lies in its quirkiness and individuality. You’ll find looks here that personify the youthfulness and

vibrancy of this rising city. Queen Street really is the sovereign in Brisbane retail with all the usual high street offerings as well as some interesting additions. The Queen Street Mall has a comprehensive set of stores, in one of the most easily accessible and contained retail areas in the world. Stores line either side of the pedestrian mall and a variety of restaurants form the centre. On busy days you’ll see entertainers and artists. The stage at the George Street end of the Mall (outside The Myer Centre) is host to a wide range of performances including everything from live usic to circus-style acts and fashion parades. With over 1,200 outlets in the Mall you’ll find souvenirs and gifts, local and international fashion, beauty, sports clothing and equipment, homewares, high tech goods and much more. As well as the shops fronting onto the Mall, the adjacent arcades, plazas and centres are well worth exploring. Both major department stores are strongly represented within the Mall. The sparkling David Jones is in QueensPlaza and the Myer department store is located within The Myer Centre at the top of the Mall. The immense Myer Centre amply fills its six floors with 180 retail outlets and a cinema.

LOUIS VUITTON.

Top to toe, it’s all happening in Edward Street as the street stakes its claim as Brisbane’s High Street. Now the city’s most sophisticated fashion hotspot, international collections drop into shops in Edward Street at the same time they do in Europe, making the precinct a prime destination to suit up in style. With fashion stalwarts including Gucci, Hermès and Ermenegildo Zegna as well as renowned jewellery boutique Canturi and Brisbane tailors Mitchell Ogilvie, the whole precinct has given such a new lease on life to what was formerly a bit of a forgotten end of town for retail. On the corner of Edward and Elizabeth Streets you’ll find the immaculate TAG Heuer boutique. This prestige watch brand uses the finest Swiss watchmaking traditions to create a quality timepiece. Their Brisbane boutique stocks a wide range of sporting and elegant timepieces. The TAG Heuer Link model in a chronograph version is an iconic stylish timepiece with a sporty look. Its defining feature is the signature S-shaped links, which gives the wearer an exceptionally smooth feel on the wrist. With a diameter of 41 mm, the black or blue sunray open dial allows for maximum readability, while the bezel features two components, combining two designs: a cushion base and an overlaid ring. The chronograph is a calibre 17 with the small second counter at 3 o’clock, the chronograph minute counter at 9 o’clock and the hour counter at 6 o’clock. These three small snailed counters contrast with the black dial, giving an impression of speed as they reflect back the light. Made entirely of steel, the bracelet is totally integrated into the case, making wearing the Link an elegant experience. The product is available at the TAG Heuer Brisbane and Pacific Fair boutiques (for stockists call 1800 809 915).

KIMMISON JEWELLERY Kimmison Jewellery is a boutique jewellery store in the historic Brisbane Arcade. Among the many gemstones in store, you will find a range of Australian Chocolate Diamonds. Australian Chocolate Diamonds are a unique Australian treasure that holds the prestigious title of being an Argyle Diamond. The diamonds are guaranteed to come straight from the source—directly from the Kimberley Region of Western Australia (Argyle Mine). Australian Chocolate Diamonds are available in earthy and neutral colours ranging from a soft champagne to a decadent chocolate. These diamonds have been cut to precision to bring out the true brilliance and beauty of each stone.

The Argyle mine has a limited lifespan and, depending on resource evaluations, may be decommissioned as early as 2020. When this occurs, Australian Chocolate Diamonds will become a rarity. Australian Chocolate Diamonds are a perfect gift to bring home or a special way to mark the memory of a holiday in Australia.

Ousby Executive Chef at Stokehouse Q perched on the Brisbane River bank at South Bank. Growing up in a rural area, buying fruit and vegetable at the packing shed was the norm for him and being in the city hasn’t changed that deep seeded love of seasonal local produce. “At Stokehouse we cherry pick our menu from producers and farms within our region. There is nothing as sexy as a potato one day out of the rich volcanic soils of the Border Ranges. There is nothing sweeter than strawberries picked hot in the sun on the Sunshine Coast, and there is nothing more rewarding than supporting your local community,” says Ousby. In the Adina Apartment Hotel on George Street, Donna Chang and Boom Boom Room have brought a modern Chinese restaurant and high-end underground bar experience to the city’s booming hospitality scene.

Donna Chang’s menu developed by Ghanem Group Group Executive Chef Jake Nicholson and Head Chef Jason Margaitis challenges the traditional combining Peking style BBQ duck with native fruit glaze and along with Mangrove blossom honey Char Sui pork. A live grouper and shellfish tank featuring the first successfully farmed Queensland grouper fish from the Rocky Point Aqua Culture facility is also on display, bringing the theatrics of Chinese cuisine to Brisbane. At Black Bird, another Ghanem Group restaurant positioned on the Brisbane River in Eagle Street, the focus also is strongly on seasonal local produce drawing from Queensland’s most sustainable resources. Expect to dine on Brisbane Valley quail, Bundaberg figs, Darling Downs black angus, Oakey black angus and Nolan’s premium selection T-bone steaks. Three Blue Ducks in W Brisbane has a philosophy of nourishing the community with ethical, authentic, quality food using fresh local ingredients infused with homegrown inspiration. Andrew Gunn, Executive Chef at Urbane and The Euro has developed strong relationships with local producers. He has created a special dish, The Falls Garden, Qld, to showcase the delicious organic produce grown in the fertile volcanic soils of the nearby Mapleton region on the Sunshine Coast. He enjoys using their older varieties of vegetables such as celtuce and sprouting cauliflower along with handpicked Bunya Red capers grown near Kingaroy. Restaurant Dan Arnold, located on the ground floor of the Alex Perry Hotel & Apartments in Fortitude Valley, offers a dining experience driven by produce-led cuisine. “Our restaurant offers regional cuisine treated with utmost care and translated into well plated and refined dishes, sharing what we have learnt and experienced over our time in France and abroad to bring these dishes to our diners in a more homely, relaxed environment. This restaurant is our canvas for that. There are no rules!” said Chef Dan Arnold. “Our menu showcases innovative gastronomic delights without the pomp and circumstance, dishes like Yam carpaccio, confit and crisp Jerusalem artichoke, candied lemon and hazelnut sauce, or slow roasted sovereign lamb saddle charred pumpkin, baby leeks and “jus gras,” said Arnold.

CHEF KITAK LEE OF THE CALILE HOTEL’S LOBBY BAR.

Also in Fortitude Valley, Chef Kitak Lee (formerly of Melbourne’s two-hatted Kisume) has developed a menu for The Calile Hotel’s Lobby Bar using a lot of local produce, including Brisbane wines, and making his own sodas using Queensland fruits. Getting out of the city precinct, Wild Canary at Brookfield is a botanical bistro that serves breakfast and lunch. Here you’ll find Free Ghost Gully greens from Gatton, plump, juicy Coolmunda Organic Olives grown near Inglewood, Queensland’s olive growing capital. Pick your dishes to try Lirah caramelised balsamic produced in Stanthorpe and Summerland camel Persian feta from the Scenic Rim. For local food matched with local wine, head to Restaurant Lurleen’s at Sirromet Winery just out of the city at Mount Cotton. The restaurant philosophy is directed by Chef Dan Jarrett (Head Chef - The Tamarind) with a distinct take on Vietnamese style dishes, all driven by fresh local produce. Spring chicken kari with fresh lemongrass and coconut, grilled scallops with granny smith and pork floss, and beetroot dumplings are fresh and inviting, while Dan’s signature crispy whole fish with ginger, chili and lime is a standout for sharing. While it’s the perfect destination for lunch or dinner, The Balfour Kitchen also serves a highly awarded breakfast menu each day.

Balfour favourites such as the eggs benedict with chardonnay hollandaise sit alongside house smoked salmon and pickled fennel salad, and chocolate croissant French toast with hazelnut ganache. North Stradbroke Island

Breathtaking views, magnificent inland lakes, and picturesque white sandy beaches, all of this and more awaits visitors at north stradbroke island.

Welcome to North Stradbroke Island (Minjerribah), home of the Quandamooka people. Affectionately known as ‘Straddie’ by the locals, this idyllic island is one of Australia’s natural treasures and best of all, it’s right on Brisbane and the Gold Coast’s doorstep. Straddie is the second largest sand island in the world and more convenient to access than many realise. Only a 45-minute drive from the Brisbane CBD and 60 minutes from the Gold Coast, access from the mainland is by Stradbroke Ferries vehicle ferry (45 minutes) or water taxi (25 minutes), located at Cleveland. Unlike other islands, all roads on Straddie linking the townships are bitumen sealed, making 4WDing recreational only. North Stradbroke Island is home to an abundance of native animals, so its important that you drive cautiously, especially around dawn and dusk.

North Stradbroke Island is blessed with some of the most beautiful and iconic spots in Brisbane and Queensland. With so many hidden waterways and scenic walks, a day at Straddie is unlike anything else. A favourite with locals and visitors alike is the glorious North Gorge walk, an absolute must do on the island. This walk is heralded as one of Australia’s best land-based vantage points to spot dolphins, turtles, manta rays, and the majestic humpback whales on their annual migration between June and November.

for a refreshing dip at one of Straddie’s many beautiful beaches. On the weekend, visitors can browse the colourful markets or enjoy a delicious meal at one of the islands many cafés and restaurants with everything from beachside fish and chips to gourmet cuisine. The island also offers a variety of accommodation options from holiday houses and resorts to waterfront cabins and camping, to suit all needs and budgets.

For the more adventurous travellers, the island boasts many exciting activities including four-wheel driving, surfing, sand boarding, and kayaking, just to name a few. The island is also well known for its scuba diving and snorkelling, with dive trips departing often.

You only need to spend a few hours on Straddie to slip into the relaxed island pace. However you envisage yourself on the island, Straddie has such a diverse range of activities that you can have your holiday, your way. Once you’ve been, it will always hold a special place in your heart.

Those wanting to relax and unwind can head to a day spa, unwind with yoga on the beach or maybe just go

A

lthough it takes just over an hour to drive from Brisbane to Beerwah, this section of the Bruce Highway certainly packs a punch when it comes to things to see and do. Along with the multi-award-winning Australia Zoo, there are mountains to climb, a museum filled with

rare war planes and a free tourist attraction that will have you bopping to the Bee Gees’ hit “Stayin’ Alive” all the way home.

DISCOVER QUEENSLAND’S ONLY FLYING MUSEUM With an opening time of 9am, you can hit the road early and be one of the first visitors at the Caboolture Warplane Museum. This hands-on museum is run by volunteers who delight in sharing their knowledge. Wander amongst fully restored WWII aircraft, view the extensive collection of wartime memorabilia and model aircraft, or try your hand at flying a plane using a flight simulator. If you want to experience the thrill of taking to the skies in one of these historic aircraft for real, joy flights are available with an advance booking. DROP INTO THE CABOOLTURE COUNTRY MARKETS Every Sunday the Caboolture Showgrounds come alive with the sights and sounds of a bustling marketplace filled with over 500 stalls. Browse for antiques, arts and crafts, books, jewellery, furniture and more or relax and watch events such as show jumping in the main arena. The Caboolture Country Markets are the perfect spot to stock up on picnic supplies to enjoy later at Australia Zoo. 140 Beerburrum Road, Caboolture. caboolturecountrymarkets.com.au

CLIMB THE GLASS HOUSE MOUNTAINS Experienced hikers visit the Glass House Mountains National Park to tackle the rocky Mount Tibrogargan summit route which involves climbing the equivalent of 50 storeys. However, you don’t need to be super fit to enjoy this scenic spot. Less

adventurous walkers can spot koalas, kangaroos and wallabies peering through paperbark trees on the Tibrogargan walking circuit and watch black-shouldered kites hunting for prey high above the forest canopy. If you don’t feel like stopping, you can still enjoy the spectacular mountain views out the window on your drive up the Bruce Highway. npsr.qld.gov.au

GO WILD AT AUSTRALIA ZOO If you are brave enough you can get up close and personal with animals such as wombats, echidnas, dingos and cheetahs at Australia Zoo. These Encounter Sessions must be booked in advance and the animals call the shots, so it’s up to them whether they want to interact with you or not. However, entering the lemur enclosure feels like you’re meeting cheeky King Julian and his mates from the movie “Madagascar”. The lemurs climb on everyone’s shoulders, eat fruit out of people’s hands, sit on laps for photos and generally clown around. The midday Wildlife Warriors show at the Crocoseum, featuring snapping crocodiles, sinuous snakes and swooping birds of prey, is famous for a reason. However, there are plenty of other shows which are also worth a look. Meet the largest species of tortoise in the world at the Tortoises LIVE show or chuckle at the

The north-facing beach also provides a sheltered swimming spot popular with families. Coolangatta also hosts Australia’s biggest 50s and 60s nostalgia festival, Cooly Rocks On, in June. Doing For Diamond What Cultured Did For Pearl Diamond Fusion is made when a multitude of microscopic man-made diamond crystals literally penetrate the inner core to create a look virtually identical to a fine diamond. Practically indistinguishable from a natural diamond, the genuine created diamond outer surface is permanently “infused” into the fabric of the inner core. All stones are painstakingly hand cut, approximately 9.2 Mohs scale with a limited lifetime warranty. Diamond Fusion stones are available in many cuts and sizes, just as fine diamonds are: colour, clarity and cut. All Diamond Fusions are hand cut to the highest diamond specifications possible. Round Diamond Fusions are cut to ideal hearts and arrows. All our jewellery is handcrafted and manufactured on the premises by Master Jeweller Robert Hain. We also specialise in repairs and remodelling.

he epicentre of Gold Coast class is Main Beach. Bound on three sides by water, Main Beach is almost an island which gives it a feeling of being slightly removed from the hustle and bustle of the rest of the Coast. On the western side of the area is the

tranquil Broadwater while the east coast beach lies against the incredible expanse of ocean. In total Main Beach covers little more than a square kilometre and is only linked to the rest of the coast by a narrow isthmus or land bridge to the hub of Surfers Paradise. One of the world’s most beautiful beachfront walks follows the track from Surfers Paradise to Main Beach. Soak up the view of the surf, then grab your board and jump in or head for the sand pumping jetty and cast your rod. Dive deep to explore several interesting dive sites and visit the wreck of the Scottish Prince. The iconic Bathing Pavilion is one of the most historic and best loved buildings on the coast, drop by for a snack and a glimpse of Main Beach’s past. No visit to Main Beach is complete without a little retail therapy. With beautiful waterfront views overlooking Broadwater, Marina Mirage is the place to shop. Why not take home a bespoke piece of jewellery from your stay on the Gold Coast. Located on Level One in Marina Mirage is Mariora Australia. Owned and operated in Australia since 1975, Mariora specialise in selected Australian solid and natural opals, unique designs, crafted in 18-karat gold and platinum on the Gold Coast. Opal is without doubt one of nature’s most remarkable gifts. Called ‘The Rainbow Stone’ by Australia’s Aboriginal people, it is now recognised as one of the ten precious gemstones in the world, along with diamonds, emeralds, rubies and sapphires. Opal is Australia’s national gemstone. Those who mine opal are attracted by the gem’s incredible ability to expose an infinite number of colours, forever moving with the light. In one of the harshest environments imaginable. The value of an opal depends on the amount and brilliance of the colour, ideally being evenly distributed across the face of the polished gem. The greater the spectrum of colours from red to violet, the better, with crimson, reds and orange being rarer than the greens and blues. Ideally, the greater the number of colours, the more prized the gem, and if these are arranged in a block pattern, more value is added. The extremes are pin-sized dots of colour (pinfire) to one large sheet of colour (broadflash) covering the whole stone. The elusive ‘harlequin’ is the ultimate in this form but is very rare. Shapes of the finished opal vary according to the characteristics of each stone. Boulder opal is usually cut in baroque or free form, whereas seam opal is at its best presented in cabochon (domed) form. Unique and intricate styling of the opals in gold and platinum, enhanced by top quality diamonds, allows Mariora’s collection to take its place at the highest level. Each creation is delicately engraved with the Mariora signature to symbolise quality and exclusivity.

Made entirely of steel, the bracelet is totally integrated into the case, making wearing the Link an elegant experience. The product is available at the TAG Heuer Pacific Fair and Brisbane boutiques (for stockists SNEAKERBOY, PACIFIC FAIR. PHOTO: DESTINATION GOLD COAST.

MIAMI MARKETTA.

If you want to look like a million dollars while spending rather less, Harbour Town at Biggera Waters has a fantastic range of stores and even better prices. This major outlet shopping centre has taken the discount feel out of bargain shopping. The stores are beautifully designed and the service is excellent, the only thing that is lower is the price; quality brands sell direct at discounts of up to 60 per cent every day of the year. There’s a great range of markets on the Gold Coast. At Ferry Road Markets you’ll find a foodie’s paradise where you can eat fresh local food for breakfast or lunch or select from stores selling just-caught seafood—mud crabs, prawns, bay and reef fish, fruit and vegetables, breads and deli staples—if you’re staying in self-contained accommodation, it’s the perfect market to select delicious ingredients that you can take home to create a feast to remember. Surfers Paradise Beachfront Markets held each Wednesday, Friday and Sunday night (4pm–9pm) attracts throngs of bargain and treasure hunters and after dinner strollers to the Surfers Paradise Foreshore. You can wander amongst more than 120 stalls selling a range of gifts, handmade art and craft, fashion, jewellery, beauty products and homewares. Every Wednesday, Friday and Saturday night, the Miami Marketta arts precinct transforms into a bustling outdoor market with gourmet street food stalls, arts and crafts stalls and live music.
