Up All Night

New York may be known as the city that never sleeps but Chicago is no early-to-bed contender, either. Whether it’s dancing all night at one of our seen and be seen clubs, catching a late night comedy showcase or getting grub, here’s how we burn the midnight oil.

hen the clock strikes midnight in Chicago, the party is just getting started with a slew of activities to revel in during the bewitching hours. The nightclub scene in Chicago is prime for late night. The newest option, TAO Chicago, has become known as a celebrity hot spot at sister locations in New York and Los Angeles and the high-profile atmosphere continues in the River North spot, at the location of the old Excalibur nightclub. Closing time isn’t until 4 am Thursdays and Fridays, 5 am on Saturdays. Fuel up before with a meal at its conjoining Asian fusion restaurant next door. www.taochicago.com Music lovers can find the tunes going all night at Uptown’s famed Green Mill jazz lounge. From traditional to be-bop, contemporary to swing, this swanky hot spot is steeped in ‘30s and ‘40s culture (it’s said to have been a favorite of Al Capone’s) and offers electric performances and stiff drinks until 4 am every night of the week, 5 am on Saturdays. www.greenmilljazz.com Find another riveting show over at Lips Chicago. This newly opened drag show revue in the South Loop

matches incredibly talented performers with a top-notch food and drink menu (our favorite is the Mz Ruff and Stuff grilled steak fritte). Saturdays are the late night option when Lips is open until 2 am but find the show going until midnight on Fridays and 11 pm on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Sundays. www.lipschicago.com If games are more your thing, head to Emporium (with locations in Wicker Park, Logan Square and Fulton Market). The popular bar arcade features vintage Ataris, pinball machines and more, plus live DJ sets and a full menu of craft beers and cocktails. The fun keeps going until 2 am every night, 3 am on Saturdays. www.emporiumchicago.com Who doesn’t need a laugh at 2 am? Find the funnies still going at iO Theater. This improv beacon, formerly known as Improv Olympic, was founded by Del Close and features some of the best comics around until 2 am most nights, 3 am Fridays and Saturdays. www.ioimprov.com Many bars in Chicago also have closing times of 4 am but one of our favorites is Old Town Ale House, beloved even by Anthony Bourdain. www.theoldtownalehouse.com

LITTLE BAD WOLF

LATE NIGHT BITES Hungry for more? These all-night dining spots in Chicago keep things hot well into the early morning. Little Bad Wolf One of Andersonville’s finest not only has some of the best cocktails around (go for the Coronet Spritz), but they serve their upscale bar food until a half-hour before closing time. That means you can enjoy pan-seared white fish, elotes and al pastor tacos until 1:30 am most nights, 2:30 am on Saturdays. www.littlebadwolfchicago.com Pick Me Up Café After a night dancing at Smart Bar or Underground Lounge, walk over to this late-night eatery on Clark Street to enjoy diner classics like all-day omlettes, nachos and chicken wraps plus thick shakes and satisfying desserts. PMU is great for veggie and vegan options too. Open until 2 am M-F, 1 am Saturdays. www.pmucafe.com Big Star While there’s usually a wait time at this popular Wicker Park bar-taqueria, from James Beard-winning chef Paul Kahan, staking a spot closer to when they close (at 2 am every night) will fare better. In addition to some of the best pescado tacos around and irresistible queso fundido, you can also find a large selection of whiskey and margs. There’s also a huge patio for when the weather is warmer. www.bigstarchicago.com

The Loop, Chicago’s official downtown, is home to many of the city’s premier attractions and things to do. When people refer to “The Loop”, they’re talking about the city’s downtown area, bordered by the Chicago River to the north and west, by Michigan Avenue to the east, and Roosevelt Avenue to the South. The Loop area is surrounded by a loop of elevated trains. Lincoln Park

North of downtown, Chicago’s North Side and Lincoln Park area is home to lots of top Chicago attractions, shopping, dining, expansive green spaces, and more. Explore Wrigleyville and cheer for the home team while catching a Cub’s game at the beloved stadium. Lincoln Park is home to significant attractions such as DePaul University and St Michael’s Church is a popular residential area and home to famous landmarks, including Steppenwolf Theatre, Chicago History Museum, and the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum. Explore Old Town, a hip historic neighborhood with Victorian-era buildings, charming streets, family owned restaurants and more. The park itself is a great place to explore – it’s a third larger than NYC’s

Central Park and is full of things to do! Visit the Lincoln Park Zoo (free!), check out the Conservatory, the Cultural Center or enjoy one of the many playing fields and golf courses. Be sure to check out LEGOLAND® Discovery Center, a large indoor space filled with exhibits, construction demos, interactive areas, and more.

Boystown

Chicago’s aptly named Boystown is one of the largest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender communities in the United States. It was also the first officially recognised gay neighbourhood in America. Primarily a commercial area, the main arteries are Broadway and Halsted St, the latter of which has over 30 different gay and lesbian bars, restaurants and nightclubs.

West Side/Central

Chicago’s West Side/ Central area consists of lots of fun neighborhoods to explore. Architecture and American Literature buffs will want to head to Oak Park where you’ll find the largest collection of Frank Lloyd Wright’s residential home designs (including his own) and Ernest Hemingway’s childhood home and museum.

Go on a taste tour of Chicago’s Little Italy where Chicago’s immigrant past is preserved and Italian culture reigns. From pizza and pasta to specialty treats like Italian ice and Polish sausage, the food scene in Little Italy is not to be missed. If you fancy yourself a foodie, there’s no better place to be than the West Loop. The neighborhood is known for its abundance of excellent restaurants and bars, including a handful of Michelin-starred kitchens like Elske and Blackbird.

Gold Coast

Check out the Gold Coast, just north of Downtown for high-end shopping, upscale dining, diverse Chicago architecture, the Chicago History Museum, the popular nightlife scene on Rush Street, and more. Take a stroll down Astor Street and appreciate the 19th-century style homes and apartment complexes. The gorgeous buildings still remain as a testament to the fashionable style of their original residents. From upscale barbeque joints to classic Italian family-style spots, you’re bound to find the perfect meal(s)! Enjoy a walk on Rush Street during the day for top of the line shopping, then circle back at night for the best nightlife in the city. If you haven’t already tried a deep dish pie yet, make a stop at Lou Malnati’s of Gold Coast.

Pilsen

Dozens of brightly colored murals have transformed

Pilsen into the city’s preeminent outdoor art gallery. Here you can discover a large concentration of murals extending along the 16th Street rail embankment from approximately Halsted to Ashland, paired with another dense pocket of largescale street art extending along 18th Street between roughly Blue Island and Ashland. With art covering the sides of restaurants, offices, galleries and even the steps of the 18th Street CTA Pink Line stop, Pilsen showcases pieces to suit any mood ranging from lighthearted works depicting Cheech & Chong and Bart Simpson to those exploring deeper themes such as a memorial to a recently murdered local teen and a “Declaration of Immigration.” A bit further into the neighborhood, see the stunning mural-covered Hector Duarte Studio House at 1900 W. Cullerton.

Logan Square

As a younger crowd has moved into Logan Square in recent years, so too has the outdoor art. The neighborhood is now a moveable feast of eye-catching murals, most notably showcased along Milwaukee Avenue from approximately Fullerton to Armitage. With one of the most densely packed concentrations of murals located in the area behind hip cocktail bar East Room (which also has a “secret” entrance), keep an eye out for the famous “Greeting From Chicago” work at 2226 N. Milwaukee as well as large-scale portraits of Quincy Jones and Robin Williams. You’ll spot murals on the sides of discount retail stores like Dollar Tree, trendy restaurants like Spilt Milk and music venues like Concord Music Hall.

Chinatown

Visiting Chinatown in any

American city is as much a part of the experience as visiting its main sights. Chicago’s Asian epicentre is home to 65,000 Chinese residents, making it one of the largest neighbourhoods of its kind in the United States. The main draw here is Wentworth Avenue where you’ll stumble upon restaurants, distinctive shopping and the Chinatown Gate.

Andersonville

Small though it may be, Andersonville packs in as much as it possibly can. Here you’ll find unique buys in cool vintage stores next to independent bars and live gig venues. Take advantage of the nightlife scene while you’re here, take in some comedy or a theater show and during the day visit the museums and art galleries. Dozens of local vendors occupy this unique shopping hub where you can browse jewelry, apparel, candles, paper goods, prints and furniture without leaving the building. When you do come up for air, there are plenty of locally-owned shops in the surrounding blocks.

Hyde Park

One of the most prominent neighborhoods in Chicago, Hyde Park is located on the south side of the city, along the south lakefront. A significant historic center, Hyde Park has played host to the likes of President Obama, Clarence Darrow, and Muhammad Ali. The many Victorian mansions and Prairie school houses will definitely keep the architecture-lovers occupied.

10

W H E R E T R AV E L E R ®

WICKER PARK

The biggest attraction in the neighborhood is central Hyde Park, home to the revered University of Chicago. Dotted with interesting bookstores, great museums, budget street food, and tree-lined streets, Hyde Park houses the Museum of Science and Industry, Oriental Institute Museum, and Robie House.

South Loop

neighborhood is a top destination for visitors looking for fine dining, upscale drinks, clubs, art-centered shopping, and more. Merchandise Mart is the perfect place to spend the day perusing showrooms full of cutting edge furniture, art and designs. Similar to the Gold Coast, there are plenty of top-rated restaurants along the river to enjoy!

Known as the Wabash Arts Corridor, the affable outdoor art that can be found in Chicago’s South Loop neighborhood is concentrated along Wabash from Van Buren to 13th Street. There’s a giant moose blowing pink bubblegum. There’s a large mural depicting the word “Harmony.” There’s art on the side of the buildings and student housing structures of Columbia College. With some murals simply fun to look at and others delving into more serious topics, the Wabash Arts Corridor offers a well-rounded introduction to Chicago’s booming outdoor art scene. Be sure to check out the art at the Roosevelt CTA Red Line station and pay a visit to Columbia College’s Manifest urban arts showcase in May taking over the Wabash Arts Corridor.

Humbolt Park

River North

It’s hard to miss the bevy of outdoor art that paints the landscape of several areas throughout Rogers Park, from sculptures and statues around Loyola University to the iconic Mile of Murals project. Beginning in 2009, the neighborhood had a goal of painting a full mile of

A large majority of Humboldt Park’s 60-plus murals are concentrated along Division Street from Campbell to California, making for an easy street art stroll along the neighborhood’s main drag. With many of the works steeped in political messaging, here you will encounter an array of pieces chronicling the neighborhood’s rich history of Puerto Rican immigration. See a large-scale work centered around political prisoners depicting the words “Liberación” and several smaller doorway murals painted on the exterior of local Division Street shops. murals along the path of the CTA Red Line. This Mile of Murals can be best viewed along Glenwood Avenue from approximately Farwell to Estes, with another more sporadic concentration of Rogers Park murals located along Ravenswood Avenue between Pratt and Touhy. Art even extends to the beach in Rogers Park, with the 600-foot seawall at Tobey Prinz Beach Park covered in vibrant color. Stop by every Father’s Day weekend for the annual Artists of the Wall Festival.

Wicker Park

This bustling neighborhood attracts art seekers (and Instagram influencers) far and wide. While the neighborhood’s murals are more spread out than other more densely packed art districts in the city, most works can be viewed along Milwaukee Avenue from Division to North or along Division Street from Ashland to Hoyne. At the corner of Division and Hoyne, you will be greeted by one of the city’s oldest murals (promoting racial harmony in Chicago since 1971 with the words “Together We Overcome” written in Spanish and English). There is also art by well-known contemporary painters like a mural of JC Rivera’s famous bear near Division and Honore. Be sure to snap a photo of the ever-changing mural outside of “hidden” Chicago cocktail bar Violet Hour at 1520 N. Damen as well as the massive color-packed piece along Chicago’s 606 urban hiking trail at 1813 N. Milwaukee.

EDITORS TIPS

THINGS TO DO (AND NOT TO DO) Here are some great WhereTraveler tips from our editors on how to navigate Chi-town like a pro.

DON’T ASK FOR KETCHUP ON YOUR HOT DOG. The fastest way to show you’re a tourist is to ask for a hot dog with ketchup on it. Instead, order a Chicago dog (topped with yellow mustard, green relish, chopped white onions, tomato wedges, a dill pickle spear, sport peppers and a dash of celery salt). But if you MUST have ketchup, order it plain and go dress it yourself at the condiment station.

LISTEN TO THE BLUES Chicago has been known as a “sweet home” for the blues, thanks to musicians such as Muddy Waters and Willie Dixon. Plan to spend at least one night taking in live music at one of the city’s blues institutions, such as Kingston Mines in Lincoln Park or the Green Mill in Uptown, or see an icon in the flesh by visiting Buddy Guy’s Legends.

HEAD TO A COMEDY CLUB What do Bill Murray, Tina Fey, Steve Carell and Stephen Colbert all have in common? Besides being legendary, they all got their start at The Second City, Chicago’s iconic improv theater. Head there for some laughs, and you might come away having seen the next big name in comedy.

GET A CTA PASS In the smartphone age, the CTA is easy enough to navigate even for newbies. Buy a three-day pass: $20 for unlimited rides will get you everywhere you want to go. If you’re staying longer, a seven-day pass on a new Ventra card will run you $33—totally worth it if you’re spending that much time here. All can be purchased from the Ventra kiosks at either the airport and any El station.

BEWARE OF MALÖRT If anyone offers you a “Chicago handshake,” beware. Consisting of a Midwestern beer, typically old style, and a shot of Jeppson’s Malört, a Swedish-style schnapps, it’s the second part of this one-two punch that you should fear. Malört was brought to Chicago in the 1930s by Swedish immigrant Carl Jeppson and takes its bitter flavor from the herb wormwood, the same as absinthe. A real Illinois experience.
