I recently photographed Thanks-Giving Square (“All About Town,” page 58) as well as “DREAM” and “Cancer...There’s Hope” (“Art & Soul,” p. 44), the latter of which depicts a collective journey through cancer and the multiple individuals affected by it. As apprehensive sculptural figures enter the battle against cancer, joyful, post-treatment figures emerge in the foreground; I attempted to capture these diverse emotions with wide-angled shots of the entire sculpture, then focus in on the telling facial expressions of the bronze figures.

Public art tells the story of a city, from its strong history to where the city is headed in the future. I was amazed to find that in the Dallas area there are at least 250 individual works of public art. That made it really hard to narrow the choices down for my story (“Art & Soul,” page 44). One of my favorite sculptures turned out to be right in the city where I live, Arlington. “DREAM” was a piece of outdoor art I had never even heard about until I discovered it during my research.
ss tyleR ShaRp I’m a photographer and writer who splits time between Texas and Montana, so naturally I’ve shot a lot of Western subjects. My grandfather was a cowboy and a handful of his friends were saddle makers, so I was very comfortable with the topic of the photo essay (“Carving a Legacy,” page 38). M.L. Leddy’s is an institution, so I was honored to be able to see behind those doors and meet the hands behind the historic craft. I really enjoyed meeting the artisans and learning about their leather-working journey. 24

HE PUBLIC ART SCENE in DFW has certainly come alive over the last several decades, since the first piece of outdoor art was installed in the early 1960s in commemoration of Old City Park near downtown Dallas. Spectators will immediately relate to the tone of DFW’s abounding artworks, which pay tribute the area’s roots while simultaneously casting an eye on the future. In Dallas alone, there are around 250 individual works of art populating the area totaling $19 million, thanks in part to not only the world-renowned artists who have graced the landscape, but also local artists who have made their marks on their city. Brad Oldham’s “The Traveling Man” series and “SkaterBIRD” sculptures in downtown Dallas reflect the Dallas native’s playful, contemporary imagination. In Deep Ellum, Oldham’s collaborative “Traveling Man” series of three giant robot sculptures (surrounded by functional bird sculptures that serve as seats) was just the beginning for the artist. In 2015, he added to his resume a 22-foot tall sculpture on top of a parking garage WHERE GUEST B OOK

tall. Illuminated with LED and external lights that change colors, the interactive piece reminds visitors to aim for the sky in Arlington, newly nicknamed “the American Dream City.” Even taller is the 30-foot “Eye” on Main Street in downtown Dallas at the Joule Hotel. Created by Tony Tasset, the sculpture is exactly as the name implies – one big eye. A mixed media work of fiberglass, resin, oil paint and steel, the sculpture’s iris is said to be modeled after Tasset’s own blue eyes. Known for showcasing creative, contemporary and often unusual art, the Joule’s “Eye” will stare at hotel guests and pedestrians indefinitely. Also in downtown at Bryan Street’s Cancer Survivors Plaza is “Cancer… There’s Hope,” a collection of bronze sculptures located within a small urban park. The last work completed by Salmones before his death, the piece represents a collective journey through cancer, and is partnered on the park’s north side with a 5,000-pound spherical water feature by Josef Kusser. Both pieces are a gentle reminder of hope for downtown passers-by, reminding them of the power of strength, unity and positive change. Even if it was at one time Dallas’ most-loved landmark sitting atop of what is now the Magnolia Hotel, the icon referred to as “The Flying Red Horse” almost lost its wings. Born in the 1930s as the logo for Magnolia Oil Company, the bright red “Pegasus” could be seen flying 450-feet above the street and from 75 miles away on a clear night. The original Pegasus now guards the grounds of the Omni Dallas downtown, thanks to the hotel developer who found the lost horses in a city-owned shed and thought they should fly again.

at 1200 Ross Ave. To find it, head near the Dallas Arts District or West End in downtown and look up: It’s hard to miss the massive bird launching off the garage on his skateboard. For history buffs, take a stroll through Pioneer Plaza in downtown and experience the iconic cattle drive sculptures, which are rumored to be the largest bronze sculptures of their type in the world. In this installation, three statuesque cowboys drive the bronze longhorn steers onto the range. Among native plants and a bubbling stream, the scene portrays the arrival of the first settlers in North Texas. The art pieces were created by artist Robert Summers from Glen Rose, Texas and can be found adjacent to the Dallas Convention Center at Young and Griffin between the historical Pioneer Cemetery and the Dallas Convention Center. Caught in mid-run at Williams Square Plaza in Las Colinas, the largerthan-life ‘Mustangs’ were installed in 1984 at the East Tower of the plaza. Created by African wildlife artist Robert Glen, also featured at a small museum nearby, the sculpture depicts a herd of nine wild mustangs running through a fountain as the water seems to splash beneath the hooves. Inhabiting a good portion of Texas at one time, these horses pay homage to the free spirit of the pioneers who first settled in North Texas. Home to the Dallas Cowboys and the Texas Rangers, Arlington, Texas is a city of dreams. As the city’s first public art acquisition, Laura Kimpton and Jeff Schomberg’s “DREAM” represents Arlington’s art renaissance and can be found a block west of Founders Plaza and the Levitt Pavilion. Made of heavy, sheet-metal steel, each letter weighs about half a ton and stands 12-feet

CRIMI CR IMIN IMI NALS IN COW TOW N ONCE AN ENTERTAINMENT HUB FOR AMERICA’S MOST LEGENDARY OUTLAWS, DOWNTOWN FORT WORTH REMEMBERS ITS WILD, INFAMOUS ROOTS IN SUNDANCE SQUARE.
PHOTO CREDIT ©JOHN SWARTZ, GOTHAM 1900. COURTESY BOOK 5.5/9PT NATIONAL PORTRAIT GALLERY, SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION; GIFT OF PINKERTON’S, INC.
BY JAIMIE SIEGLE OF ALL THE FOLKLORE hailing from the Wild West, infamous tales of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid have remained some the most captivating. When they weren’t robbing trains or banks, the two outlaws and their three cohorts—also often referred to as “The Wild Bunch,” the “Hole-in-the-Wall Gang” and the “Fort Worth Five”—spent much of their downtime in Fort Worth. It was here that they, along with cowboys from the Chisholm Trail as well as fellow Western legends such as Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday, indulged at the many saloons, gambling parlors, dance halls and bordellos around town. But if a picture is worth a thousand words, a black-and-white portrait taken by a Fort Worth photographer in 1900 has become priceless. It marked the beginning of the end for the outlaws, directly leading to their demise. (Soon after, Cassidy and the Sundance Kid reportedly fled to South America where they were killed in a gun fight, and the other members were either shot or captured.) The legend goes like this: A few months after the successful robbery of a bank in Nevada, the “Fort Worth Five” gang—Robert LeRoy Parker (Butch Cassidy), Harry Longabaugh (the Sundance Kid), Harvey Logan, Will Carver and Ben Kilpatrick— arrived at the gallery and studio of John Swartz located at 705 Main Street, not far from their home base in Hell’s Half-Acre. Speculation continues about why the outlaws were dressed in their best; whatever the occasion, they decided to have a group portrait taken in their finest formal attire. Apparently satisfied,
all five men ordered 6.5 x 8.5-inch prints to be picked up a week later, notes author Donna Ernst in “Butch Cassidy: A Biography.” Swartz proudly posted the portrait in his storefront window, unintentionally tipping off a detective who happened to pass by and recognize one of the outlaws. After ordering 50 copies the detective promptly “returned to his office, just one block up at 817 Main Street (a Fort Worth Heritage Trail Marker between 5th and 6th streets exists there today), and began the process of identifying the other four men,” Ernst writes. It wasn’t long until “WANTED” posters identifying the members of “The Wild Bunch” circulated around multiple states, soon covering trees, signs, saloons and Western establishments across the country. Accompanying the names of the criminals were mugshots of each criminal—cropped from Swartz’s iconic photograph, arguably considered to be one of the most important historical images in Western history. Now a thriving hub of new restaurants, retail shops and galleries—alive with the energy it had at the turn of the 20th century—the revitalized district of downtown known as Sundance Square continues to preserve the legacy of its namesake. Within the plaza, patrons can stay at Etta’s Place a bed-and-breakfast named after one of the gang’s female cohorts whose real name was Etta Place. Its themed, artifact-filled suites commemorate the lesser known women of the Wild Bunch whose stories are often forgotten, and Fort Worth’s history as a “gateway” to the Wild West.
“If a picture is worth a thousand words, this black-and-white portrait by a Fort Worth photographer has become priceless: It was the beginning of the end of a long run for the outlaws, directly leading to the gang’s demise.”

EW PEOPLE DRANK MARGARITAS in 1971. Unless they had traveled to Mexico, cocktail enthusiasts had rarely even heard of tequila. But when Mariano’s Mexican Cantina opened on Dallas’ hip Greenville Avenue, a frosty new libation was born that would put both the margarita and Tex-Mex cuisine on the map. Armed with years of restaurant experience and his father’s secret margarita recipe, Mariano Martinez launched his first dining destination at the still-standing Old Town shopping center on Dallas’ Greenville Avenue (the restaurant itself is no longer at that location). Filled with lively sounds of mariachi bands, ornate Mexican murals and costume-clad servers, the festive atmosphere created a collective thirst among patrons for the only beverage that seemed to fit to imbibe at the fiesta-friendly hot spot: Mariano’s signature blended margaritas. And imbibe, they did—so much, in fact, that overwhelmed bartenders couldn’t keep up. Bottlenecks, traffic jams and long lines at the restaurant’s only blender resulted in slower service, inconsistent batches of margaritas and complaints from guests. Martinez racked his brain to find a way to efficiently mass-produce his father’s classic recipe. With a few mechanical upgrades and a little creativity, Martinez found the answer in a washed-up, soft-serve ice cream machine; its continuous churn could produce blended margarita batches at a much higher volume and faster pace, allowing him to remove the likelihood of human error and maintain the quality and integrity of the restaurant’s signature drink. Some told Mariano that the “frozen margarita” concept was scientifically impossible. “Alcohol doesn’t freeze,” they said. Other restaurant owners told him that drinks from a machine would never sell; customers wanted the romance associated with a bartender mixing and pouring their cocktails. But Martinez had seen the potential in the margarita for years, having watched his father make them time and time again. “I always knew there was magic in the drink,” he recalls. The young restaurateur’s 6-ounce, machine-made margaritas poured into short-stemmed glasses sold for $1.25. Soon, diners flocked to Mariano’s from all over the Metroplex for the grown-up slushie, and the contraption quickly became a widespread phenomenon. In 2005, the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History acquired one of the original machines, citing it as a symbol of “American invention and entrepreneurialism.” After months of investigating U.S. patent records and competing claims, Smithsonian curator Rayna Green and a team of historians confirmed that Martinez’s “cool creation” was indeed the first. It was this entrepreneurial ingenuity that is credited as the catalyst for popularizing the margarita and Tex-Mex food in the U.S. The Smithsonian even ranked the machine among America’s top 10 inventions—right up there with Edison’s light bulb. “It replaced the martini in American drinking,” says Green, also a Dallas native. (The sister machine to the Smithsonian artifact known as the “Maggie-Rita,” however, remains in its hometown. Visitors can see it at the Old Red Museum’s permanent collection of Dallas history.) Today, all six Mariano’s establishments (Mariano’s Hacienda has two locations; La Hacienda Ranch has four) have traded in the original cantina’s trendy vibe for a laid-back, fun and family-friendly atmosphere. Additionally, each one offers seven frozen flavors of the iconic beverage and more than 40 types of tequila. As for the drink of choice for the frozen margarita machine maker himself, there’s only one: “Papa’s Original Recipe,” he says. Some creations, it appears, aren’t meant to be improved. While it may lack the glitz and glamour of its glory days in the ‘70s, the Mariano’s legacy has retained its top-shelf standards, loyal clientele and classic beverage recipes for over 40 years—and that accomplishment is reason alone to raise a (margarita) glass. ¡Salud!
