VIRGINIA INN
Chef and owner David Nichols brings the tastes of his home in Central Washington to Eight Row, a new farm-to-table bar and grill in Green Lake. The vibe of the place is above all fresh, from the healthy options on the constantly updated menu to the hanging plants adorning the shelves and windowsills. Happy hour runs from 4-6 pm Monday through Friday. Come by for a look at the extensive cocktail list (check out the Eight Row Spritzes), a collection of discounted glasses of wine and the celebrated king crab corndog.
Rider at Hotel Theodore is one of the swankiest spots around the city to get your day drink or nightcap on, with happy hour running from 3-6 pm and 10-11 pm every day. Bring friends and share the fried Parmesan and ricotta dumplings that appear on their happy hour menu, as well as the Dungeness crab toast and ahi tuna tartare. Spotlighted cocktails include Moscow mules, daiquiris, and the “Rough Rider,” a tall boy with a shot of bourbon or fernet. Once you settle into the cozy, sleek atmosphere at Rider, you won’t want to leave.
Stop by after an afternoon at Pike Place Market for drinks and eats at Virginia Inn, a Seattle staple that was first established in 1903. From 4-6 pm each day, enjoy discounted pints and glasses of wine along with crab cakes, calamari or a myriad of charcuterie and cheese board selections. The V.I. sources their produce, protein and everything else from nearby suppliers, ensuring the freshest ingredients to accompany your draft or bottle of wine. DOUGH ZONE
A Seattle favorite since it opened in 2014, Dough Zone serves an ample variety of delicious Shanghai-style dumplings and buns, soups, noodles, sandwiches and doughnuts in a casual setting. Q-bao pan-fried pork buns and pork-filled dumplings are their specialty—half steamed, half fried. The secret to eating a dumpling, they say, is to grab the dumpling from the top with chopsticks, place it on a spoon, take a tiny bite to release the steam, add a drop or two of vinegar, then eat the entire dumpling in one delicious mouthful. Six locations, offering nonalcoholic and alcoholic beverages as well. 604 5th Ave. S, 206.286.9999, www.doughzonedumplinghouse.com

KANAME IZAKAYA SHOCHU BAR
Expect tasty Japanese stalwarts: sushi, bento boxes (kaname obento), chicken teriyaki, tonkatsu and more, but the real star is the shochu, a liquor distilled from barley, sweet potato or rice. Stronger than wine or sake but weaker than whisky, it’s offered straight and in a variety of cocktails, including such exotic drinks as shochu with sesame milk, and a sho-chu highball with oolong tea. Kaname also serves 13 sakes at room temp, chilled or hot. 610 S. Jackson St., 206.682.1828, www.kaname-izakaya.com
LUOSIFEN
How adventurous do you feel? Win kudos as an intrepid diner at Luosifen, named for a dish from Liuzhou in Guangxi, China. Luosifen consists of rice noodles and a broth made from river snails and pork bones stewed for hours with 20-some herbs and spices. This sweet-sour, spicy soup doesn’t contain any snail meat but does include

pickled bamboo shoots and green beans, shredded wood ear (black fungus) and fu zhu (tofu skin). Their Classic Luosifen bowl comes with crispy pork, BBQ pork, brined egg, and pig feet. 514 S. King St., 206.485.7189, www.luosifennoodle.com
MANEKI
Steep yourself in Japantown history at Maneki, which opened in 1904 and has served the community for more than 100 years. The original three-story building resembled a Japanese castle. In the 1930s, one of the restaurant’s dishwashers was a college student, Takeo Miki, who later became Japan’s prime minister. During the WWII internment of Japanese citizens, Maneki’s building was ransacked and left in ruins, but the restaurant re-opened after the war in its current space, offering delicious, traditional Japanese cuisine in a casual setting. James Beard Foundation named the restaurant an American classic. Hannya Room lounge open until midnight. 304 6th Ave. S, 206.622.2631, www.manekirestaurant.com
SAMURAI NOODLE
This casual noodle joint takes its inspiration from small ramen shops in Japan known for their rich pork broths and chewy noodles. Samurai Noodle prides itself on fresh, authentic Tonkotsu noodles made daily with a machine imported from Japan. It also serves rice bowls and assorted appetizers, including squid tempura, gyoza pot stickers and karaage fried chicken with ginger. 606 5th Ave. S, 206.624.9321, www.samurainoodle.com

TAI TUNG CHINESE RESTAURANT
So many claims to fame. Tai Chung opened in 1935, making it the oldest Chinese restaurant in Seattle. Famed chef Anthony Bourdain ate here, as have various celebrity fans. Iconic actor Bruce Lee was a regular, and his favorite dish was beef in oyster sauce. Tai Tung’s biggest claim to fame? It has to be the extensive menu of succulent Cantonese dishes. 655 S. King St., 206.622.7372, www.taitungrestaurant.com
TAMARIND TREE
Dine at this upscale, elegant restaurant offering indoor and patio seating and enjoy Vietnamese food that gets raves. Specialty dishes include the Tamarind Tree crepe: scallops, prawns, pork slices, shiitake mushrooms, bean sprouts and mung beans in fried rice batter topped with coconut milk. Pair with a lemongrass martini or tamarind fizz. Dessert options fascinate: Try cognac red banana cake or select from eight flavors of house-made ice creams. 1036 S. The tea shop also offers smoothies, fruit and herbal drinks, coffee and interesting drink toppings such as coffee jelly, chia seeds, grass jelly, red bean and aiyu (fig) jelly. Try the Rock Oolong Milk Tea, a fermented and roasted oolong with a woody and smoky taste, grown on Wuyi Mountain in China. 609 S. Weller St., 206.682.6688, www.youngteaglobal.com SAMURAI NOODLE

The grand dame of fine dining in the Emerald City, Canlis has been offering an upscale culinary experience for nearly 70 years. Instead of resting on its laurels, though, the restaurant— serving contemporary Northwest fare—continues to innovate every year. “For most old restaurants, success is through nostalgia, but we have a commitment to not grow old,” says third-generation co-owner Brian Canlis. “Every year, we ask ourselves, ‘How is Canlis going to be new and relevant and exciting and surprising this year?’” That doesn’t mean completely reinventing the wheel. There’s still a dress code, a rarity for the area, and the same welcoming, residential feel that Brian’s grandfather wanted when he opened the midcentury modern restaurant in the 1950s lives on. At the latest James Beard Awards, the food industry’s highest honor, Canlis won both the Design Icon Award—given to a restaurant whose design has
influenced others and remained substantially unchanged for at least 20 years—and Best Chef: Northwest for Chef Brady Williams’ work. “It felt like the national dining scene said, ‘We have seen you and we recognize you for these two seemingly opposite things that you are: being an icon and also being cutting edge,’” Brian Canlis says. 2576 Aurora Ave., 206.283.3313, www.canlis.com
AQUA BY EL GAUCHO Ideally located on the waterfront at the end of Pier 70—near the picturesque Olympic Sculpture Park—AQUA by El Gaucho stuns with Elliott Bay views through the floor-to-ceiling windows or from the expansive outside deck. Gracious servers are armed with a deep knowledge of the menu, which brims with fresh seafood and steaks, and a sommelier will help you navigate the extensive wine list for a perfect pairing with your meal. 2801 Alaskan Way, 206.956.9171, www.elgaucho.com/dine/aqua
ARCHIPELAGO Chef Aaron Verzosa and his wife, artist Amber Manuguid, have created a restaurant that bridges their Filipino American identities, melding flavors from the Philippines with Northwest ingredients in a sensory-packed meal that’s meant to savor. The tasting menu includes nine to 11 courses that unfold as an experiential journey, each dish telling a piece of the story. The Hillman City restaurant is by reservation only, so be sure to book ahead—there are just eight spots at two seatings each evening from Wednesday to Saturday. 5607 Rainier Ave. S, www.archipelagoseattle.com

THE CAPITAL GRILLE For a hearty meal in a high-end setting, The Capital Grille downtown delivers. While it has the classic steakhouse look, there’s a little local flavor with portraits of notable Seattleites decorating the walls. It’s the meat that’s the star of the show, of course—steaks are dry-aged in-house for up to 24 days before being hand-cut by the on-site butcher—but the sides hold their own. Lobster macaroni and cheese, truffle fries with Parmesan, and herb-roasted wild mushrooms are always worth sharing. 1301 4th Ave., 206.382.0900, www.thecapitalgrille.com

Bakery Items
Tom Douglas’ Dahlia Bakery is a necessity, serving a selection of pastries alongside its famous triple coconut cream pie. Another local favorite, Macrina Bakery offers everything from giant cookies to berry-topped cheesecakes at its numerous locations. Located in Pike Place Market, Le Panier is also a popular stop for both locals and visitors, selling macarons, tarts, palmiers and other French-inspired sweets. For those who want to taste a variety of confections, Bakery Nouveau is an easy pick, offering macarons, a variety of cakes and the classic twice-baked almond croissants. T.M. Dessert Works in Phinney Ridge has been around for nearly 30 years and is the neighborhood’s one-stop shop for pastries, cakes, cookies and more. Beyond traditional bakeries, R&M Dessert Bar serves both individual and full-size desserts such as tarts, bread pudding and truffle cake alongside a curated selection of wine, beer and coffee. Another trendy pick, Capitol Hill’s Pie Bar serves up specialty pies alongside a late-night drink menu in a cocktail lounge setting. Hot Cakes Molten Chocolate Cakery is a dessert destination that speaks for itself, offering decadent cakes and caramels in both Ballard and Capitol Hill. Cupcake Royale is another downtown favorite and a must-stop for those craving something indulgent, as they feature flavorful choices such as rainbow sherbet and banana split. There are a few spots in the city to get a donut fix, with Top Pot Doughnuts leading the charge. Mighty-O Donuts is another quality option with a health twist—all the shop’s donuts are vegan and organic with no trans-fat.

No trip to Seattle is complete without a stop at Molly Moon’s Homemade Ice Cream— a local shop with a sustainable mission and decadent, homemade ice cream. Though founded in Portland, Salt & Straw is another Pacific Northwest favorite, specializing in wild flavors such as goat cheese marionberry habanero and caramel corn on the cob. Hidden away in Chophouse Row, Kurt Farm Shop offers some of the best ice cream in the city, with a custard base and farm-inspired flavors such as rose geranium and lemon verbena. Also in Capitol Hill, Old School Frozen Custard offers a modest selection of flavors and classic creations with a rich, creamy base. Sweet Alchemy and Parfait are two other Seattle-based, farm-to-table creameries that are worth a stop as well. If you’re craving that old-school feel, Shug’s Soda Fountain and Ice Cream in Pike Place Market is a must, serving up classic sundaes, sodas and floats. Chocolate and Candy
Chocolate lovers, rejoice—between Theo’s Chocolate Factory tours and the rise in chocolate shops popping up throughout the city, Seattle has got you covered. Seattle Chocolate has been providing the city with quality confections for several decades. On the newer side, Indi Chocolate has been making waves at its Pike Place Market factory and café, producing unique chocolate products and offering ongoing classes. With a head chocolate maker who has a background in botany and brewing, Intrigue Chocolate Co. has also been garnering some recent attention, offering chocolate tastings alongside its craft chocolate selections.
For European-style drinking chocolate, head to Chocolat Vitale in Phinney Ridge. The brick and mortar store also sells craft chocolate bars and specialty teas. Chocolopolis in Interbay is slightly lesser-known and not only offers a curated collection of craft chocolate bars, but also hosts expeditions to chocolate farms around the world. Outside of the city’s chocolate obsession, there are plenty of candy shops to choose from. Operating in Seattle for nearly 40 years, The Confectionery in University Village has old-fashioned appeal and is home to a collection of traditional gummies, sours, licorice, truffles and more. Sweet Mickey’s is another local favorite, offering handmade fudge, chocolate truffles and classic bulk candies in the heart of Ballard. With a few locations in the greater Seattle area, Lolli & Pops is an upscale candy store with everything from macarons to Champagne-flavored gummy bears. Rocket Fizz is another popular franchise, selling an extensive variety of candies in addition to old-school sodas.
Fine Dining Delights
For diners looking for a sweet bite after their meal, Dahlia Lounge is located downtown and is another Tom Douglas creation, home to the same scrumptious coconut cream pie that you can find at Dahlia Bakery. Further down on 4th Avenue is another option, RN74. They offer upscale French fare that’s complemented by its famous hand-cut beignets; or try their dark chocolate crémeux and pair it with an extensive list of sweet wine, coffee or tea. Back in Ballard, Delancey’s classic pizza is best followed by its tasty chocolate chip cookies with gray salt, which are also available in dough form. If you’re craving wine and cocktails more than a full meal, Madrona’s Bottlehouse has a great selection of drinks and small plates, which are only complete with an order of the house pot de crème. For those really looking for a splurge, Canlis is the way to go. Not only is it one of Seattle’s most famous restaurants, but it’s also home to the Canlis soufflé—a decadent last course with crème anglaise and orange Curaçao.
