The Intracoastal Waterway The Atlantic Ocean grabs all of the attention, but most residents of the Gold Coast see far more of the Intracoastal Waterway, whether theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re strolling along the banks or boating through it. In Fort Lauderdale, the Jungle Queen cruises the Intracoastal and the New River, while the Water Taxi offers barhopping and even a trip to South Beach. Morikami Gardens Explore the 200 acres of Japanese gardens that surround the objects and artifacts. Enjoy rotating exhibits, tea ceremonies, traditional festivals, a 225-seat theater, a library, classrooms, a museum store, a café and a lakeside terrace. The gardens are a maze of bonsai collections, resting areas, picnic benches, nature trails and pine forests and small lakes filled with koi. Bonnet House Museum and Gardens Built by Frederic Clay Bartlett in 1920, the Bonnet House was a winter retreat embellished with artistic elements that Frederic and his wife, Evelyn, picked out over their years of marriage. The house is preserved and maintained in its original state, with original furnishings and artwork. Worth Avenue Psst. Come closer—we don’t want to raise our voice. We’re not supposed to tell you this, but there’s shopping in Palm Beach, and anyone can go. We’re whispering because the tiny town of Palm Beach is very sensitive about unwanted traffic. The Starbucks and Nieman Marcus stores barely got permission to open on Worth Avenue—don’t want to attract the wrong element. Even so, there’s plenty of high-end shopping here, including Saks Fifth Avenue, Tiffany & Co., Gucci, Cartier, Jimmy Choo, Tourneau and Brooks Brothers. No riff-raff, please.

Butterfly World Advertised as the largest butterfly complex on the planet, Butterfly World boasts some 10,000 species in its aviaries and gardens. The place abounds with passion flowers and other nectar-rich plants. Butterfly World also is home to hummingbirds and a bug museum with scorpions, spiders and, if you’re not feeling too squeamish, giant Asian cockroaches.

Loggerhead Marinelife Center There’s nothing cuter than baby turtles, and the Loggerhead Marinelife Center in Juno Beach has them by the tank-full. The Marinelife Center serves as both an animal hospital and a tourist attraction. Injured and sick turtles wind up here, where they’re nursed back to health by marine biologists. Once the turtles are healthy, workers and volunteers cart them by stretcher to the beach, where they’re returned to the ocean. While the turtles recover, you can get a close look at them—babies, juveniles and adults are divided among a halfdozen or so waist-high tanks.

The Everglades Famously dubbed the “River of Grass,” this slow-flowing marsh is one of the world’s most unique and fragile ecosystems. All that Joseph Young had built was proven tenuous in 1926 when “The Great Miami Hurricane” hit. Adjusted for inflation, the hurricane still stands as the most fiscally damaging in history, and it put South Florida’s development back decades. Tucked away in the City of Hollywood Archives is a beautiful little manuscript describing the storm written by 12-year-old Martha Rose Scott and gorgeously illustrated by her mother. It describes the scene of the vicious, category-four storm ravishing the Beach Hotel and the Broadwalk, as well as a frantic pastiche of the daily life of Hollywood Beach. Also in the city archive is little Martha Rose’s now antique Raggedy Ann doll that she mentions in the tale—and clutched while fearing for her life and running desperately through the waves. “Martha Rose Scott’s ‘The Mightiest Hurricane in the Nation’s History’ is a story of resilience in facing one’s fears and coping with the aftermath of a

terrible tragedy,” said Richard Roberts, the City of Hollywood’s director of archives, about the tale. “Sharing her book and her story with Hollywood’s schoolchildren, and adults for that matter, is an incredible way of connecting us as a community, from the Broadwalk to the beach. Even from downtown, west and east. My first experience in holding and reading it was pure pleasure and amazement. We would be a lucky city if all our 12-year-olds were as articulate as Martha Rose.” After the monster storm hit Hollywood Beach in 1926, the population of the town of Hollywood went from nearly 30,000 people to around 2,869 in the early 1930s. The land boom fell out following such intense devastation, in addition to the Great Depression, shattering Young’s early dream of a tropical paradise. Though some rebuilding efforts were made, it was only a matter of time until the onset of World War II further hindered the town’s growth. Interestingly, the Navy used one of the buildings built before the storm, the Cavanaugh Apartments, during the war to house officers’ families for nearby training facilities. This small fact adds further to the rich history and lore of the Broadwalk and Hollywood Beach. UP AND CO M I NG

The 1950s and 1960s saw development and the flourishing of businesses and hotels on the beach and around the Broadwalk. It was around this time that the city was able to claim the land north of the Beach Hotel to further develop the Broadwalk itself and secure its future as an attraction worth visiting. Tourists began to trickle back in, and local families continued traversing the joys of the beach. Flamingo Pool, which by this time had historic significance, strengthened the community and even served as somewhat of a day care for children who would get dropped in the morning and their working parents would pick them up at night. Next door to the hotel was a community area called The Ovens, which consisted of a row of wooden pavilions and gas ovens with picnic tables where families would spend the entire day right on the Broadwalk playing paddleball and enjoying the ocean. In the 1960s, small-scale attractions popped up, including sites for miniature golf, archery, trampolines and arcades. During this growth the Broadwalk was ever-changing. Storefronts opened and closed, and a bandshell was built. In the early 1970s, the city

Often visitors and ill-informed South Floridians alike see “Hollywood Broadwalk” written out and think it’s a typo, possibly from a poorly funded tourism board that does not know where to put its “R”s. But when the Broadwalk was conceived and begun in 1923—three years after the city itself—by founder and master developer Joseph W. Young, he made a conscious decision for the strolling beauty that would define his beach to be different from the popular and in-vogue Boardwalks of the Northeast. “The beach promenade was not made of wood, so it wasn’t a boardwalk,” said Hollywood historian Joan Mickelson. “The pink cement Broadwalk, laid in 1922, was the first man-made element on Hollywood’s beach barrier island.” The history of the 30-foot-wide Broadwalk has been one of great and constant change. Initially, the land on which Hollywood and its beaches lie were swampy marsh, covered in thick brush and lined with mangroves. In the Broadwalk’s nascent years, the biggest and only attraction was the Hollywood Beach Hotel completed in 1925, which still stands today as the centerpiece Hollywood beach resort. Around the monolithic hotel a small economy grew with a fire station adjacent and a wide array of shops inside, including the famous Tangerine Tea Room for drinks and refreshments, as well as the Flamingo Pool outside, with its luxurious beachside cabanas. And, of course, everyone took a stroll on the Broadwalk.

finally began allowing restaurants, which was a watershed moment for the landscape of the Broadwalk. Up until that point, people had to bring their own food to the beach. Hamburger joints and hot-dog stands fed happy tourists soaking in the sunshine.

The current-day Broadwalk is fast becoming an inspiring family-friendly alternative to the nearby options of Fort Lauderdale Beach and the lively South Beach in Miami. Mayor Peter Bober is making a concentrated effort to incorporate more live music into the programming so there are performances resonating through the sand and surf upwards of five nights a week. The Broadwalk comes alive from November to Easter with constant, event-based programming such as marathons, weddings, parades and the popular Josh’s Organic Market on Sundays. For those who want to engage in a more natural side of the beach, there are regular volunteers who protect the fragile sea-turtle population of Hollywood Beach, and for anyone who wants to enjoy the breeze, there are regular trolley rides available up and down the Broadwalk. The famous CanadaFest festival that attracts more than 150,000

visitors each year is a huge celebration of all things Canada, made popular by the ever-present local population of French-Canadian tourists. This constant bustle makes the Hollywood Broadwalk a beautifully vibrant place. There are big plans in place with the Margaritaville Hollywood Beach Resort, a 349-room mega resort right off Johnson Street that has been newly refinanced, approved and finalized by the city. There are also plans to move the utility lines on and around the Broadwalk underground. The beauty of the Broadwalk is important to maintain, and it is this effort that has attracted some big-budget filming, such as the film “Rock of Ages,” or even more recently rapper Flo Rida’s music videos. he Antique Row Art & Design District in West Palm Beach has become the center of the universe for antique shoppers in the know. “We love the antiques district in West Palm Beach, on South Dixie Highway between Southern Boulevard and Belvedere Road,” said Simon Doonan, creative director of Barneys New York, who, with interior designer Jonathon Adler, makes frequent visits to the district. Not only is the area being swamped by New York designers, who regularly shop in it, but it is also touted by the mainstream media who proclaim that it’s the best shopping outside of New York and Los Angeles. “The Row attracts a range of shoppers, from well-known decorators, who fly in from New York and Los Angeles, to avid bargain scroungers,” reported The New York Times. The area, located in a once-forgotten neighborhood, boasts more than 40 shops and galleries offering an impressive range that includes 17th- to 20th-century antiques, period art-deco and moderne furnishings, fine and decorative arts, and even kitschy decor made of seashells. Although it has recently come into its own, so to speak, the world’s best interior designers have been shopping Antique Row for more than 25 years. Architectural Digest, The New York Times, Art & Antiques and House Beautiful are just a few of the publications to label the area as one of the East Coast’s premier antique shopping districts. “We love shopping on the West Palm Beach Antiques Row because there is such a wide variety to choose from,” says Todd Dyer Davis, co-owner (with Robert Sidney Brown) of Brown Davis Interiors, a design firm based in Miami with offices in Washington, D.C. “From period antiques to Mid Century Modern furnishings to beautiful shell mirrors and chandeliers, it’s all there. When shopping The West Palm Beach Art and Design District, we are able to source beautiful items.”

DEEP IN THE D I ST R I C T The variety of antique shops in the district is astounding. There’s N.P. Trent Antiques (3729 South Dixie Highway, www.nptrentantiques.com), a 30-year-old shop for serious antique connoisseurs, where you’ll find an amazing selection of 18th- to early 19thcentury English and continental pieces. Gary Rubinstein Antiques (3901A South Dixie Highway, www.garyrubinsteinantiques.1stdibs.com), a favorite of top New York designers, specializes in fine 18th-, 19th- and 20thcentury furniture and decorative arts with an emphasis on Italian design of the late-18th and mid-20th centuries. With two locations along South Dixie Highway, James and Jeffrey Antiques (3619 and 3713 South Dixie Highway, www.jamesandjeffrey.com) also has become a favorite among decorators for their selection of accent pieces and 18th- and 19th-century continental furnishings. Lars Bolander (3731 South Dixie Highway, www.larsbolander.com), a Swedish-born interior designer, owns a shop bearing his name with classically styled furniture and accessories. “The aura of antique row is pure eclecticism,” says Gary Rubinstein, owner of Gary Rubinstein Antiques. “There is something for everyone. There are museum-quality pieces as well as fun vintage items for the young

collector. One can walk from shop to shop and see different dealers’ tastes and collections. It is a destination-shopping experience.” Rubinstein, an antique dealer for 20 years with stores in New York, Connecticut, Miami and Palm Beach, opened a shop in the district three years ago. “We decided to open due to the fact that much of our New York City and European client base had homes in the area and were asking for us to be a presence in the community. The most beautiful space became available and we were on our way.” Rubinstein has watched the area grow and enjoys the fact that the district has become a designers’ destination. “The area has improved in that the diversity of the shops has really improved. There is new blood and everyone is trying to capture a specific audience. The dealers have stepped up their game.” And what does Rubinstein credit for the popularity of the district? “The row is unique in the sheer number of shops in close proximity of each other. (There’s also) the unique and constantly changing inventory of the dealers, the eclectic nature of the different shops and most importantly the value that is there. If we were in New York our prices would have to be way higher, so we can offer a great product for a better price.”

While antiques rule the district, there is also a great selection of specialty shops in the area such as Christa’s South Antiques and Seashells, featuring shell-based treasures, and James and Jeffrey Antiques, offering accent pieces and continental furnishings. TREASU R E HU N T While antiques rule in the district, there is also a great selection of art galleries and specialty shops such as Christa’s South Antiques and Seashells and JF Art Gallery. Jamnea Finlayson, owner of JF Art Gallery (3901 South Dixie Highway, www.jfgallery.com) and treasurer of the West Palm Antique Row Association, describes the area as “a melting pot of high-end antiques from all over the world plus a couple of galleries and a couple of charming and pretty amazing restaurants. It’s an eclectic range from antique to modern, furniture to art, interior to exterior. It is such a charming place to spend an afternoon at, there is a lot to see and experience.” Finlayson’s gallery focuses mainly on contemporary art with a selection of minimalist work. “I like to show both sculpture and paintings that please the eye, and make you feel something.” Finlayson represents a variety of local and international artists in the gallery. “One of my favorite artists in the gallery is Maximo Caminero; he is a Dominican artist, based out of Miami. His works are in museums all over the world and his work is both beautiful and sophisticated.” Opening the gallery in 2003, JF Gallery moved to the area only three years ago. “Some of the shops have been here for decades,” adds Finlayson, who says she’s pleased at all the attention that the district has received and while most of her customers are locals, she does get her share of visiting designers and celebrities. Christa’s South Antiques and Seashells (3737 South Dixie Highway, www.csseashell.com) is more a specialty shop than your typical antique

shop but filled with treasures nonetheless. If you fancy shells, then you must visit Christa’s, which showcases an impressive collection of shell fantasies, furniture, mirrors, lighting and accessories. On the row for almost 20 years, owner Christa Wilms opened the shop after her son was born in 1993. “Antique Row already had about 20 dealers when I got here. I was lucky to get this spot right in the heart of the row. This block is where it all began, with NP Trent, our old neighbor and landlord, buying this block and re-opening stores here as antique shops once the old ones vacated. Then came The Brass Scale, Greta S and Christa’s South Antiques.” Christa’s shop has earned the attention of the international press for the collection of treasures within. “I have been published in every major design magazine in this country, and many in Europe and England as well. I have gotten to work with many super designers and architects. Together we have created such gorgeous creations that, truly, a book should be done on where all these shell objects have been used around the world.” Christa’s shop has had its fair share of celebrity customers, such as Cameron Diaz, Rod Stewart, George Hamilton and Martha Stewart, but everyone enjoys browsing there. “My shop carries items from $5 to $25,000, so simply everyone comes here. Most of my clientele are sophisticated, well-traveled and educated. Men enjoy the shop as well as women, because Christa’s South has so many gifts from the earth.” Proving that the Antiques Row Art & Design District offers a cornucopia of treasures, making it worth the visit. acked tightly in the club, worshippers to the rock gods anxiously await the melodies they know by heart: The deep drone of the bass, screeching riffs emanating from electric guitar, the pounding on the snare drum, and, finally, the singer screaming the first notes into the microphone. It’s not a scene from New York, Los Angeles or Austin, but rather a nightly tribute to music in sunny South Florida. Most visitors to the region are drawn to the sandy beaches and slathering of sun block, but anyone who knows anything can feel the rumbling of rock ’n’ roll.

massive arenas and concert halls in the area, the allure of watching a live band play at a bar or smaller venue is still there. In the heart of downtown Fort Lauderdale’s entertainment district is Revolution Live, which has managed to create an intimate atmosphere for the best of the best to perform. Jeff John, owner and president of the club, said the venue hosts up to 150 shows a year, running the gamut in genre. The stage has seen the likes of Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Smashing Pumpkins, John Legend, P!nk, Kings of Leon, Arctic Monkeys, A Tribe Called Quest and other big-name artists who started out playing shows at the music venue. At Revolution Live, fans can get up-close and personal with their music idol, standing close enough to the stage to see every drop of sweat. “We’ve always enjoyed an experience more when people are right by the stage. I’d rather slap high-fives with someone right in the front row,” Joel Hanks, bassist for Badfish, said. “That’s the type of room we want to play every night.” Badfish, a Sublime tribute band, has performed at the venue a dozen times and was launched to national fame with gigs at Revolution Live. Although the band regularly plays at stadiums and large stages where the audience is banished to stand behind fencing, Badfish always loves to return to South Florida. “In South Florida, we always get one of the most energetic crowds. People come to the club and they’re just ready to rock,” Hanks said. Revolution Live has created such a following that moviemakers have taken notice. While conducting focus groups for musical-turned-movie “Rock of Ages,” the crew decided that the club would be the perfect setting for the Bourbon Room—home to character Staci Jaxx.

“They had the trailers in one parking lot, the concessions and the costumes in the other parking lot,” John remembers of the set taking over his club. “I came down at times and spent a night or two in there.” Fans of the movie will be happy to know that some props are still up—the ties and bras that hung around the bar of the rockin’ Bourbon Room are permanent fixtures, for example. “You like to keep some things so when the crowd comes in they go ‘Hey, yo, look at that, I remember that!’” John said. TOP ROCK MARKET | A big market to compete with when it comes to entertainment is Miami. However, Jeff John feels that while people flock to South Beach to dance to an international, electronic-dance-music DJ’s set, Broward and Palm Beach have a hold on the rock scene. It’s a feeling many locals share. “I would say, in my opinion, Miami has more of a Latin flavor—there’s more rock bands with a horn section and congas. In Broward, there’s more of the hipster rock where it’s a little bit more grungy, a little bit more of a younger feel all around,” said Joel DaSilva, a local musician. A veteran of the South Florida music scene, DaSilva spent 13 years as the front man for the Hep Cap Boo Daddies and then went solo and formed Joel DaSilva and the Midnight Howl in 2010. Creating an eclectic mix of blues, swamp surf, swing and “all of the above,” the band has created a following at music bars from Palm Beach down to Miami. In the years he has been playing, DaSilva said, South Florida music lovers have been a tough crowd to please. However, it’s been changing for the better. With the surf and sand creating a breeding ground for talented musicians, residents have started to take notice.

“It’s gotten a lot better actually: tons of talent,” DaSilva said. “It is a good, strong scene down here for sure.” WE BUILT THIS CITY | Many rock bands that have broken into the national market call the Gold Coast their home. Just to name a few, punk band New Found Glory hail from Coral Springs and indie rock band Dashboard Confessional have roots in Palm Beach County. Many have played small venues such as Culture Room in Fort Lauderdale, which greets a variety of acts every week. Farther north in West Palm Beach is the home of one of the most highly anticipated musical events in the area —and for some, in the world. SunFest, going into its 31st year, is a festival that brings in 50 bands to perform on three waterfront stages. Not only does the weekend of music draw local lovers of music, but last year, tickets were purchased online in 44 different states and 10 countries. “We build a mini city within the city,” said Melissa Sullivan, SunFest marketing manager. “What we try to do is feature regional up-and-comers to add to the value of the performers.” That means not only musicians and bands that rule

the airwaves play. The festival saw Counting Crows, The Fray, Snoop Dogg, Passion Pit, Third Eye Blind, The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Pitbull, Girl Talk and dozens more in 2012, mixed in with local and regional bands that have gained a following within their communities. Staged the first weekend of every May, the “mini city” draws more than 165,000 music lovers to the waterfront for hours of music from the comfort of their lawn chairs. Local restaurants and food trucks are also in full force for hours of tunes, food and drink. For rock acts that have never performed in the South Florida market, Sunfest can be a surprisingly successful event. “I think people don’t necessarily know what the West Palm Beach market is going to be for them, but when they get here they really enjoy it,” Sullivan said. “We do hear from performers that they’d like to play us again.” South Florida holds musical promise. And for musicians like Joel DaSilva, it’s that good rockin’ tune and fans cheering in a dimly lit bar that make the area one poised for musical discovery. “The rock scene is here, just go out and find it,” he said.

As for the circles, they’re a traffic feature designed to break up Hollywood Boulevard. The restaurants and bars around Young Circle bustle at night, and Harrison Street offers a mix of restaurants, bars and galleries, including the Art & Culture Center of Hollywood. Hollywood appropriately dubs itself “Vintage South Florida.” From the Art Deco buildings along Hollywood Boulevard to the funky beachfront Broadwalk, eclectic Hollywood oozes Old Florida charm.

This old Florida town is best known for the condo canyons along the beach and for the horse and dog tracks inland. Gulfstream Park Racing & Casino is a venerable venue to bet on thoroughbreds. Pompano Beach

If you’re looking for bargains on watches and luxury items, stop by the Festival Flea Market. After shopping, hit the beach. From the northern end of the public beach, you can see the “Hillsboro Light,” an inaccessible lighthouse that’s said to be visible for miles. Or take a stroll on the Pompano Beach Pier. This quiet town takes its name from the Hillsboro Inlet Lighthouse, which in fact is in Hillsboro Beach, not Lighthouse Point. The town also has approximately 20 acres of parks and mini-parks for your enjoyment. Cap’s Island, now known as “Al Fletcher Park,” is popular for pram sailing. Along the Coast yard along Atlantic Avenue. During the holidays, it’s home to a Christmas tree advertised as the world’s largest. The Spady Cultural Heritage Museum offers a taste of Delray’s African-American history, and the Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens create an oasis of serenity.

This is a city that loves its waterfront, as the miles of sidewalks and bike lanes along the Intracoastal Waterway attest. It’s also a town that loves a good time.
