A West Virginia native, Annette was inspired by Nancy Drew at age nine to write short stories. She has always loved thrillers and mysteries, especially those set in Florida, with their colorful casts and familiar locations. Being able to talk with one of the best writers of the genre, Brad Meltzer, who is also a South Floridian, she said, was a thrill of a lifetime.
An award-winning cookbook author, nutritionist, culinary instructor and food editor, Robyn Webb was a long time snow-bird visitor to South Florida before she relocated permanently to Miami. She remembers visiting Fort Lauderdale as a college student and can appreciate how the atmosphere has changed over the years. When she’s not home, you can spot her checking out the organic food markets or running on the beach with Fort Lauderdale friends.
Paul Marcellini is a fine art photographer, specializing in detailed images of Florida’s wild scenery. A self-taught naturalist, he strives to educate the public and create awareness of these vital and shrinking ecosystems. As a fifth-generation Floridian, his goal is to capture scenes without the hand of man, wild and pristine, how he imagines Florida was when his family first moved down. McCarthy’s Wildlife Sanctuary was a pleasure to visit. The animal enclosures were impeccably clean and the animals all responded well to the staff. The facility has nice tropical landscaping which worked well as backdrops to my images.
Susan is a two-time Pulitzer team finalist who spent two decades in the newspaper industry primarily as an editor and manager. She grew up on a farm with her very own pony in southern Virginia, growing peanuts, corn and soybeans and raising cattle and pigs. So the farm-to-table trend seems only natural to her as a food writer and takes her back to her roots. The memory of fresh sweet corn is still intense. Find her “Dining Scene” column on restaurant news every Wednesday in the Sun Sentinel’s Food section.

CALL OF THE WILD A better alternative to zoos are sanctuaries, where animals, rescued from abuse and neglect, are allowed to recover. Photographer Paul Marcellini set out to capture these magnificent creatures, now at home, at McCarthy’s Wildlife Sanctuary. PHOTOS BY PAUL MARCELLINI
Founded by former reptile keeper at the Miami Serpentarium, Mark McCarthy, the five-acre McCarthy Wildlife Sanctuary, is home to close to 200 permanent resident animals, many neglected, abused or surrendered by their owners to Florida’s Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. At the sanctuary each animal

is given the freedom and attention needed not only to recover, but to thrive. A visit to the sanctuary, located in West Palm Beach, is a chance to come closer than ever to something wild and fragile. It’s not uncommon to spot white tigers, black leopards, ruffed lemurs, scarlet macaws, great horned owls and albino Burmese pythons.

FITLAUDERDALE Fort Lauderdale evolves from spring break hot spot to healthy haven
Fort Lauderdale has come a long way from when it used to be called “Fort Liquordale.” The nickname was first given to the city in honor of the rum-runners who smuggled illegal liquor from the nearby Bahamas back to the United States. during the 1920s prohibition era. The designation was used again to characterize the extreme partying of the spring breakers that descended upon the city from the 1960s to the 1980s, crowding its beaches and bars for fun in the sun. Today, these images of “Fort Liquordale” have faded away in favor of a city focused on a healthy lifestyle for its out-of-town guests and residents. 26
“The evolution of Fort Lauderdale is remarkable,” says Todd Bothel, deputy director and supervising curator for the Fort Lauderdale Historical Society. “From its days of being a sleepy fisherman’s village from 1900 until the 1920s, then as a training center for the military during World War II, through the wild days of the student vacationers from the north, we’ve now become a world- class, world-traveler destination.” Bothel explains that over the last 10 years, there has been much redevelopment in the downtown area and the beaches. “There are now so many healthy activities to choose from, far beyond from when just

downing a rum swizzle and lazing around to perfect a tan were the norm,” he adds. It’s what draws Jenna Wolfe, a lifestyle and fitness expert and frequent traveler to Fort Lauderdale. “When I first started coming here years ago, it was all about just sitting on the beach. Eye candy used to take the form of a polka-dot bikini; now it’s the bright colors of the jet skis, parasails and more—it’s all so inviting.” And Wolfe is not alone in her desire to have an active vacation. According to the Global Wellness Institute, wellness travel is set to grow more than nine percent in 2017, nearly 50 percent more than overall global tourism. Fort Lauderdale’s established active lifestyle has become the go-to spot for travelers seeking to maintain their health during their vacations. Wolfe goes on to say that what’s different about the destination now is that the city maintains its healthy tendencies year-round. Throughout the year, there are numerous competitive events and opportunities to exercise outside. Several organic farmers markets, such as Las Olas Farmers Market and restaurants with plant-based menus, such as the upscale eatery Sublime, showcase the area’s commitment to better eating. “The active lifestyle is fully incorporated into the fabric of this city,” Wolfe continues. Joanie Bowden, the spa director at St. Somewhere 28
Spa at Margaritaville Hollywood Beach Resort agrees. “At first, wellness meant a good massage. Now it’s how do I eat better, sleep better, exercise better, maintain all of this on my vacation and continue this at home?” she says. She believes that the Fort Lauderdale area has an edge because of its proximity to the beach. While the downtown areas have indeed been revitalized to reflect the city’s dedication to a fit way of life, the beach is still the major draw. “My clients do yoga, but on a beach—and on a water board.” says Dorron Blumberg, professional fitness expert and sports psychologist. “Paddleboarding, waterskiing, kite-surfing, you name it and my clients are requesting these [outdoor] activities.” Blumberg said one of the newest water activities is the water jet pack, which looks part sci-fi and part British Secret Service agent. It’s a water-propelled jet pack attached to a water-craft that sends you high up into the air. “It’s a fun twist on some of the more usual water sports,” he exclaims. So what’s the future for a city already in tune to fitness? Blumberg believes that wellness retreats are on the rise and that is going to continue to go gangbusters. For Wolfe, it may be just a bit more personal. “I come here with my two small children. We all eat better, sleep better and feel better when we are in Fort Lauderdale.

Salad created by Four Seasons Palm Beach executive chef Tory Martindale using greens and vegetables from Swank Specialty Produce farm.
Dining at a true farm-to-table restaurant allows you to share in the farmers’ favorite aspects of their earthy craft: nutritious, tasty, local food. “I call it farm to pharmacy. The food is the medicine,” says John Cerreta, an agricultural consultant who produces about 25 offerings for South Florida chefs at his one-acre Boutique Farms in Deerfield Beach. “It makes you live longer.” Nutrition equals flavor, says Swank Specialty Produce owner Darrin Swank, who farms 20 acres in Loxahatchee, Florida. Swank has been catering to restaurants for 14 years and is up to 45 chefs and 375 products, which includes multiple varieties of lettuce, tomatoes, herbs, seasonal vegetables and beans. His wife, Jodi Swank, said the Four Seasons Resort Palm Beach jump-started their farm business, leading to the acclaimed Café Boulud in Palm Beach and 32 East in Delray Beach as clients. “We became trailblazers of the whole small farm movement” she explains. “The chefs were sold on the beauty of our products, the quality and the flavor.” The farm-to-table movement is largely motivated
by a drive to give consumers the freshest, healthiest produce possible. The Swanks use a natural hydroponic house and organic fields. Cerreta, who started his career by managing celebrities’ nutritional diets, nurtures his micro greens, kale, spinach and radishes with animalfree, green manure that he makes from compost. “It’s an ancient Hindu method—a trademark kind of thing. I don’t have to spray pesticide. It’s a long-lost art,” he says. “It lengthens the life cycle of the plant and makes it stronger and greener. It blows the chefs away. They don’t even know what to do with it sometimes. It’s powerful.” There are, of course, other benefits to local sourcing, as Swank and Cerreta point out: a longer shelf life of produce translates into freshness and flavor, and a reduction of carbon and emissions. “My food is sometimes [at restaurants] within the hour of being picked,” Cerreta says. “There’s no diesel fuel, trucking or flying in.” It’s not a cheap or easy process, however. “Our production is very expensive compared to commercial farms, and they can sell it for a third of what we charge,” Swank said. “Our two main challenges are WHERE GUEST B OOK

weather and competition. Now there [are] 75 people coming to do what we do. Palm Beach County is probably the hardest county in the country to do what we do. The pressure is relentless and [it] never stops.” Cerreta agrees on the subtropical challenge. “It’s very erratic, heavy rains, unnatural pests, iguanas, extreme temperatures, humidity and sandy soil,” he says. The secret to making it all come together is in nurturing a close working relationship between those growing the food and those preparing it. “I didn’t realize when I started this how personal it is,” Swank says. “You’re growing something people are putting in their bodies. It takes a lot of time to build trust.” It also takes chefs with vision. Four Seasons executive chef Tory Martindale, who grew up hunting and foraging in British Columbia, is one of those chefs. He considers the Swanks good friends. 32
“I usually go to the farm at least once a month. It’s always a fun visit, touching and tasting everything,” he says. “We primarily order micro greens and lettuces but have collaborated with them growing specialty items for us as well. I even developed a wedding salad that uses a whole head of baby lettuce. They are tight and beautiful; they almost need no garnish as they are so colorful.” Like the Swanks, Cerreta forms personal bonds with the chefs. He even provides bonus food for their babies. “I’m part of their family. It makes the kids stronger, healthier and bigger. [A lot] less doctors’ visits. The mineral content of my food is completely different,” he says. Eric Baker, executive chef at Max’s Harvest in Delray Beach and long-time customer of Boutique Farms, pureed Cerreta’s gifts of veggies for his son, Brody, for a year. “There is a greater sense of personal connection to the produce when you know the farmer, and you know what

greater sense of personal connection to the produce when you know the farmer, and you know what he puts into [the] ground and how he or she cares for it.”

he puts into [the] ground and how he or she cares for it,” Baker explains. “I am not sure I have ever tasted greens more vibrant and robust than the ones John grows. He is a true artisan.” And that relationship is a two-way street. Baker sometimes buys seeds online and gives them to Cerreta to grow for him to serve his family or at the restaurant. “The ultimate in supporting a local farm is recognizing that chefs often can’t cherry pick from what farms
bring them,” Baker says. “I have to find ways to use the products he provides.” Swank says Palm Beach County is the number one agricultural area east of the Mississippi and believes South Florida benefits greatly from chefs such as Baker and Martindale. “Any money that comes to you gets filtered back out into the community,” Swank says. “It’s not going back to California or Mexico, which is a plus for everyone.” WHERE GUEST B OOK

Q&A
TIME TRAVELER Prolific author and historian Brad Meltzer on storytelling, personal heroes and the coolest sight to see in Palm Beach. INTERVIEWED BY ANNETTE GALLAGHER
How did you get started writing?
It wasn’t until I graduated from college. I was coming out of the University of Michigan and I had a job offer from ... Games magazine. [After the publisher quit before I started working] I thought I’d wrecked my life. I had no idea what to do. So I said, “I’m gonna write a novel.”
How did growing up in South Florida influence your writing?
At the end of the day, I write thrillers, so a lot about crazy people … and there are no more crazy people than in my beloved Florida ... I also set my books somewhat in South Florida—the finale of “The Fifth Assassin” was set in the Dry Tortugas [National Park] at Fort Jefferson [west of Key West]. Where would you send a first-time visitor to the area?
JFK’s hidden Palm Beach bunker. The Kennedys wintered in Palm Beach, so in 1961, the government built a bomb shelter across the Intracoastal Waterway, on Peanut Island. That was revealed in the mid-1970s, and you can tour it now. It’s fascinating.
What are your must-pack items?
I always pack a good book, usually a comic book. I like young adult books, non-fiction—it must be a good story. I always have a Braun razor; it’s what I use to shave my head. Sneakers. I go everywhere in sneakers. Jeans. I’m almost religious about my favorite T-shirt too. I have one that is the illustration from “I Am Amelia Earhart,” made exclusively for me and my daughter by Chris Eliopoulos, the illustrator of the “Ordinary People” series. You wrote the “Heroes” books about famous and everyday
stories when I was little and made me understand the value of a good story. Miss Spicer. Jim Henson and Mr. Rogers both taught me that I could use creativity to change the world. What do you do when you’re not writing?
I love comic books … I love movies. I love sharing what I love with my kids: “ET,” the original Willie Wonka movie, the original Superman, “Annie,” “Wayne’s World.” Where would you like to travel that you haven’t yet?
Africa. I’ve always wanted to do the safari thing, but I feel like going on safari is something you do when you’re “done,” so I hold on to that as my carrot.
heroes. Who are some of yours? You are on the road often; what’s the best part of that?
My favorite part of traveling is when I see someone from my childhood. My oldest friends will come and see me and make fun 34
of me. I had the first girl I kissed in the same room as the last girl I kissed. My wife didn’t find that as amusing as I did.
Aside from the obvious (my mom and my dad) … my grandfather Ben Reuben told me Batman
What’s your next project?
New book. A sequel to “The House of Secrets.” And also on the next illustrated children’s book, “I Am Sacagawea.”

Raised in Brooklyn and Miami, Brad Meltzer, now lives in Boca Raton, Fla. He’s written 11 New York Times best-selling thrillers, including his latest American history probing intrigue, “The House of Secrets.” Meltzer was also the popular host of history shows “Decoded” and “Brad Meltzer’s Lost History” on the History Channel and H2. We caught up with him to find out what he’s been up to and glean personal recommendations for history buffs.

tors with an extensive assortment of shopping and entertainment options including Sawgrass Mills Mall.
FORT LAUDERDALE Once known as a spring break getaway— but no more. Now, Fort Lauderdale is a year-round mecca for worldclass shopping, dining and entertainment, from the Galleria Mall and Westfield Broward to cultural attractions like the NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderale, Museum of Discovery and Science, and the Bonnet House Museum and Gardens. Whether you’re looking for a laid-back beach, a high-end meal or energetic nightlife, you’ll find it in Fort Lauderdale, also known as the “Venice of America.”
lights in this Old Florida town. After a day at the beach, try the fresh seafood and juicy steaks at JB’s on the Beach, an eatery that calls itself “classy casual,” or The Cove for waterfront dining and cocktails. Farther inland, Quiet Waters Park offers a freshwater swimming beach, a cable-ski machine that’s popular with wake-boarders, a water park for kids and mountain biking trails. Or for a change of pace, take a boat out to Deerfield Island Park, an undeveloped preserve where the only residents are gopher tortoises and other wildlife.
SUNRISE Founded as a master-planned community in the 1960s,
HALLANDALE BEACH This city on the southern end of Greater Fort Lauderdale, is best known for the condo canyons along the beach and for two of South Florida’s premier “racinos.” Gulfstream Park is a venerable venue to watch the thorough-breds run especially during the Florida Derby, held every spring. Over at Mardi Gras Casino you’ll find a players paradise with 1,100 Vegas-style slot machines. If the outdoors are the main draw, there’s a wide array of sports from golf and swimming to boating and salt-water fishing to experience.
the city of Sunrise is within six miles of Fort Lauderdale, Davie and Plantation. In the early 1990s, many corporations relocated its corporate headquarters here, establishing it as one of the leading areas to live, work and play. Home to the BB&T Center, the second largest state-of-the-art arena in the nation and home of the NHL’s Florida Panthers hockey team, BB&T also hosts top national entertainment events. HOLLYWOOD A visit to Hollywood means learing about the “Broadwalk” and the traffic circles. The Broadwalk is a paved, beachfront walkway that separates the sand from the shops and restaurants that provide a relaxed, low-key vibe to the area. And the circles are the trafffic feature that break up Hollywood Boulevard. A mile or so inland from the Broadwalk in downtown Hollywood near the ArtsPark, the restaurants and bars bustle at night around Young Circle. Harrison Street offers a mix of sidewalk cafes, bistros, wine bars and art galleries, including the Art & Culture Center of Hollywood. The city appropriately dubs itself “Vintage South Florida.” From the art-deco buildings along downtown to the funky beachfront Broadwalk, eclectic Hollywood oozes bohemian charm.
JUPITER This town on the northern end of the Gold Coast boasts beautiful beaches perfect for families and a less-bustling pace. Visit the Jupiter Lighthouse, a distinctive, historic landmark built in 1860. Stop by the Abacoa neighborhood, which offers shops and restaurants and a ballpark that’s host to the Miami Marlins and St. Louis Cardinals during spring training and the Florida

State League’s Jupiter Hammerheads from April to September. Golf lovers will adore Jupiter, an area known for its five championship golf courses and home to 28 of the sport’s greatest players including Tiger Woods, Dustin Johnson, Rory McIlroy and Rickie Fowler.
WEST PALM BEACH This is a city that loves its waterfront, as the miles of sidewalks and bike lanes along the Intracoastal Waterway attest. It’s also a neighborhood that loves a good time. Sunfest is West Palm Beach’s biggest party, but far from the only one. The party’s always on at CityPlace, the collection of stores and restaurants along Okeechobee Boulevard and “Whether you are on Clematis Street. For design enthusiasts, explore looking for a laid-back the charming antique district of 40 shops with an impressive selection of 17th-to 20th-century beach, a high-end collectibles. PALM BEACH Wealth is the defining feature in this oceanfront enclave. The luxurious homes here routinely sell for tens of millions of dollars, and while the Kennedy family are no longer regular visitors, an exhaustive list of celebrities and entrepreneurs are. Famous Palm Beach residents include Howard Stern and Jimmy Buffett, along with tennis superstars Venus and Serena Williams, novelist James Patterson and billionaire and U.S. President Donald Trump, whose owned the Mar-a-Lago oceanfront property since 1985. The rich history of the area is as magnificent as its real estate, dating back to the 1800s and the days of railroad tycoon and Palm Beach founder, Henry M. Flagler, who also built The Breakers hotel. For a glimpse into Flagler’s life and this fascinating period in American history, visit the Henry Morrison Flagler Museum. The historic Boca Raton Resort & Club, designed by legendary architect Addison Mizner in the 1920s, offers a majestic setting. And for world-class shopping and dining, visit the Town Center at Boca Raton or Mizner Park, which boasts a mix of luxury retailers and independently-owned boutiques to please the most discernible fashionistas.
