For Houston-based freelancer Holly Beretto, writing about The Grand 1894 Opera House was a chance to revisit two of her favorite subjects: history and theater. Discovering The Grand’s significance to turn-of-the-20thcentury Galveston was a terrific way to better appreciate the Gulf Coast city. In writing about Rice Village, she had the opportunity to uncover some eclectic shops and sample some terrific dishes. Holly writes for Arts + Culture Texas, Downtown and Arizona State University magazines. She was recently named the editorin-chief for Pierce, the magazine of Franklin Pierce University, and is the author of “Christ as the Cornerstone: Fifty Years of Worship at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church,” published by Bright Sky Press.

He co-hosted “Texans All Access” and other shows on SportsRadio610 AM (KILT) and appeared on “Texans Huddle” and other programming on FOX Sports Southwest. He also worked on the NFL public relations staff at Super Bowls XLIV (2010, Miami) and XLV (2011, Dallas) and, while attending the University of Southern California, worked for the USC football team during two national championship seasons under coach Pete Carroll. “It would be nice if Houston teams had actually played in some of the big games that I mentioned in this article,” Scurfield says. “Still, writing this story gave me a greater appreciation for just how vital of a city Houston is in the world of sports. We have so many options year-round not even including the Super Bowls and Final Fours of the world. It’s just one more piece of the puzzle that makes Houston a great place to live.”

FOR LOVE OF THE GAMES With four professional sports teams numerous state-of-the-artstadiums, “Clutch City” is a world-class sports town. BY NICK SCURFIELD

Space City, Bayou City, Crush City, H-Town, the Energy Capital of the World—all these monikers have been applied to the nation’s fourth largest metro area. “Big Game City” could also be appropriate, considering Houston has earned a reputation as a global destination for premier sporting events.

GAME AFTER GAME

HOME FIELD ADVANTAGE: The Texans play the Baltimore Ravens in 2014 at NRG Stadium, where 2017’s Super Bowl LI also takes place.

From Super Bowl VIII at Rice Stadium in 1974 to Super Bowl LI at NRG Stadium in 2017, Houston has hosted some of the biggest games and names in sports. A culturally diverse melting pot of more than two million people, Houston boasts an enviable sporting infrastructure that continues to grow stronger with its revitalized downtown and expanding public transit system. The city won bids to host the NCAA Men’s Final Four in April 2016 and the NFL’s 2017 Super Bowl, bringing what are arguably America’s two most coveted sporting events to Houston in a 10-month span. It was the second Super Bowl awarded to Houston since 2004 and the second Final Four since 2011. Over the last 15 years, Houston also has hosted various All-Star games, two NCAA Big 12 Conference football championships, Texas high school football championships and two WWE Wrestlemanias. Add to those events to the city’s year-round pro sports teams—the Houston Texans, Houston Rockets, Houston

Astros, Houston Dynamo and Houston Dash—as well as its thriving collegiate and amateur athletics and annual sporting events including the Houston Marathon, a PGA tournament and international soccer and rugby matches, you have the makings of a truly world-class sports city. “Houston ... has always been seen as an attractive location for hosting major sporting events,” said David Tagliarino, Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of the

Houston Dynamo and a former executive at SMG, the management group that oversees NRG Park. “In addition, Houston is a major gateway to Latin America, Europe and the Middle East thanks to our two international airports [which allow] those events to connect with fans around the world.”

“IF YOU BUILD IT, THEY WILL COME”

PLAYING THE FIELD: Upgrades to venues for the Houston Astros, Houston Dynamo, Houston Rockets and Houston Texans have helped put Houston’s thriving sports culture on the map—not just for fans locally, but around the world.

When John F. Kennedy gave his famous “We Choose to Go to the Moon” speech in 1962 at Rice Stadium, the venue was one of Texas’ largest stadiums, holding up to 70,000 people. The iconic Houston Astrodome opened in 1965 as the world’s first indoor stadium, earning the nickname the “Eighth Wonder of the World” and introducing the commercial use of AstroTurf, the artificial, grass-like surface commonly installed on playing fields around the globe. The Summit, home of the Rockets from 1975-2003 (and now the home of a giant 16,800-seat church), was part of a lavish new breed of NBA arenas that helped to elevate the league to its current level of prominence. Today, each of Houston’s four major professional teams plays in a stadium built since the advent of the new millennium. The Astros’ Minute Maid Park, for instance, opened in 2000 in downtown as the first stadium in Houston with a retractable roof. Two years later, the Texans’ 71,000-seat NRG Stadium was the first NFL venue to have a retractable roof. It received a facelift to bolster the city’s bid for Super Bowl LI, which included new video boards that were, at the time, the world’s largest digital displays in any pro sports venue. Toyota Center, the Rockets’ 18,000-seat downtown arena features the largest indoor center-hung scoreboard screen in the U.S., installed in 2012 for the 2013 NBA All-Star Game. BBVA Compass Stadium, which opened in 2012, is a sleek, soccer-specific stadium that holds up to 22,000, and is the home field for the Dash and Dynamo. Those venues have been the home stadiums of some of the most iconic athletes in Texas sports—Earl Campbell, Nolan Ryan, Warren Moon, Hakeem Olajuwon, Clyde Drexler, Roger Clemens, Craig Biggio, Jeff Bagwell, Andre Johnson, Tracy McGrady, Yao Ming, Brian Ching, James Harden and J.J. Watt, to name a few. Dale Robertson of the Houston Chronicle, the longest-tenured sportswriter in Texas, says it’s all part of a unique overall package that comes complete with a touch of Texas hospitality.

“We have proven that Houston is a really hospitable city,” said Robertson, who has been covering sports for Houston newspapers since 1972. “Rarely will you find anybody that comes to Houston for a major sporting event that doesn’t think that people are really nice, and we have a community that knows how to come to come together and make big events work.” Combined with the city’s supportive, influential business community, large fan base and volunteer pool, the city’s position as a host city has become nearly inevitable. “Even in 1974 (before Super Bowl VIII), when the NFL Commissioner’s Party on Friday night was a big deal, it was the party to end all parties ... I mean, they were roasting whole pigs on spits in the Astrodome. It’s that whole ‘everything is bigger in Texas’ kind of thing.”

CONNECTING THE DOTS What’s more than Houston’s world-class facilities is how they are positioned—and in recent years, what connects them: Minute Maid Park, Toyota Center and BBVA Compass Stadium are all within a short walk of one another, triangulated around the George R. Brown Convention Center and downtown’s Discovery Green. The 12-acre park can hold upward of 100,000 people without having to close any city streets—making it an ideal hub for Final Four and Super Bowl activities, from fan expos and concerts to special pregame events. Across the street, upgrades to the convention center in advance of Super Bowl LI include a mixed-use pedestrian area and 15 restaurants. Get to NRG Park (as well as other downtown destinations) via Houston’s METRORail. The light rail train system opened in January 2004, just before Super Bowl XXXVIIII, with a 7.5-mile north-south Red Line that transported passengers to the stadium from downtown through Houston’s Museum District, Rice University, Memorial Hermann Hospital and the Texas Medical Center. In 2015, the city expanded the light rail system with additional lines that connect to Houston’s Theater District, BBVA Compass Stadium, the University of Houston and Texas Southern University. “The amount of development taking place is setting Houston up for a tremendous future,” Tagliarino said. “The infrastructure, resources and support by the City will enable Houston to continue to compete regionally, nationally and internationally in attracting future events to our great city.” WHERE GUEST B OOK

Visitors to Houston will quickly discover that the city is one of the most diverse in the country. With more than 100 languages spoken across its vast sprawl, thousands of ethnic restaurants celebrating world cuisine and a thriving arts scene that’s global in scope and subject, the Bayou City is a perpetual melting pot of cultural fusion. While Houston has a terrific Chinatown and a bustling Little India, one of the best ways to become immersed in the city’s international offerings is with a trip to Rice Village. Just west of the Rice University campus, this established 10-block area is an eclectic collection of shops, restaurants, pubs and services that bring to south Texas some of the best the world has to offer. It’s easy to spend a few hours—even a whole day— rambling through the area, discovering new dishes and finding new items to add to your closet or home. Stop in for breakfast at Croissant Brioche French Bakery and Café, where the coffee is first-rate and the French-inspired pastries are exceptional. Multiple varieties of quiche, a delightfully fresh fruit tart and an almond croissant that wins raves dot the menu. From there, pop down the street to British Isles, where the interior is crowded with food stuffs, chi-

naware, cards, toys, toiletries, magazines, newspapers, and gifts collected from across the United Kingdom. A Village staple for more than two decades, British Isles is Houston’s one-stop shop for all things Anglophile. “Houston is amazingly cosmopolitan,” says owner Guy Streatfield. “On weekends, it’s like the United Nations in here. Not just British expats, but Americans, Canadians, Jamaicans, South Africans – we recently started carrying foods from South Africa. It’s a wonderful mix.” Available to take home (or they’ll ship!) are Dunoon bone china mugs, which Streatfield says are unique to the shop; handbags and scarves, English marmalades and what Streatfield calls “the mainstays of the British nursery,” which include Beatrix Potter books and toys, Paddington Bear sets and a host of Harry Potter items. At local boutique Myth + Symbol, discover one-of-akind apparel and home goods from independent designers who hail from the U.S. and around the globe. Sisters Trang and Chau Nguyen are the dynamic duo behind the trendy shop, and they’ve made it their passion to not only know the designers whose cutting-edge works grace their space, but the unique stories hidden within each piece. Look for handcrafted dresses and tops, handbags, jewelry and beauty accessories. WHERE GUEST B OOK

Opened in July 2015, it proceeded to make multiple ‘Top Restaurant’ lists in Houston and the rest of the country, as well as claiming a James Beard Semifinalist Award nomination. “It’s a 1,600 square-foot love letter to the food and wine of Greece,” says proprietor Evan Turner. The allGreek wine list is the country’s second largest, with exquisite choices to complement Chef William Wright’s Gulf Coast-meets-Greece cuisine. Don’t miss the grilled octopus, offered with yellow split peas, or the stunningly simple but mouthwatering feta-brined chicken – and when the Greek Village Salad is in season, order it. A few blocks over, El Meson fuses the flavors of Spain and Cuba in a charmingly graceful spot. Try the Champiñones Al Ajillo (mushrooms sautéed with serrano ham and garlic), or the Solomillo Empanizado (butterflycut filet of pork tenderloin breaded and pan-seared in olive oil with white rice, black beans and sweet plantains). In the evening, unwind with game-watching at local Irish-themed pub The Gorgeous Gael, take in a play at the fantastic Main Street Theater, or indulge in a well-earned nightcap from The Kelvin Arms.

STILL STANDING A witness to Galveston’s history for more than a century, The Grand 1894 Opera House remains an epicenter of Island culture.

Today, The Grand’s annual entertainment calendar runs the gamut in genre, from Broadway productions to live concerts and comedy shows.

From the center of the block on Galveston’s Post Office Street, the red-brick edifice of The Grand 1894 Opera House stands sentinel over the city, its Victorian ornamentation and Gilded-Age interior reminders of the grace and charm of a bygone era. Built in 1894 at a cost of $100,000 raised from the financial support of a handful of the city’s prominent business leaders, it part of a string of opera houses throughout Texas. Back then, it was Galveston, not Houston, that was the commercial hub of the South. Up and down the Strand, along the Seawall and in warehouses and offices, trade flourished in this bustling center, giving rise to gingerbread Queen Anne homes and a thriving merchant class, and cementing the Island’s

reputation as a place of cosmopolitan culture with the gauzy graciousness of Southern hospitality. And then came the Great Storm of 1900, the hurricane that virtually wiped Galveston off the map, leaving tens of thousands dead, millions of dollars in damage, and causing engineers and commerce leaders to look up the road to Houston’s inland locale as safe harbor for the next generation of commerce. “The Great Storm blew out the back wall of the stage and took the roof off,” says Maureen Patton, executive director of The Grand. “The fact that the place re-opened a year later, in 1901 is fascinating and unbelievable.” It’s also a testament to what the theater means to the WHERE GUEST B OOK

community. When it opened, it was – as it is today – a road house, a venue meant for touring productions that would perform two or three shows before moving on to their next destination. Throughout the early 20th century, The Grand hosted vaudeville acts, which gave way to silent films, which in turn would bow to “talkies.” By the mid-century, downtown Galveston met the same fate as city centers across the country: shops shuttered in the face of competition of suburban shopping malls. After business hours, downtowns were ghost towns. By the 1970s, the Grand closed its doors. Thanks to the newly formed Galveston Arts Council, with monetary support from the Houston Endowment and the Moody Foundation, among others, $8 million was raised for the restoration of the theatre between 1974 and 1990. The curtain went back up at The Grand in 1974, and a modern era of Island cultural offerings began. “This was the largest stage in Texas when it was built,” says Patton. “The wings and fly space make it perfect for touring shows. “ Today, between 30 and 40 of them roll into The Grand each year, offering a dizzying array of styles and A-list talent. Traveling Broadway musicals stop at The Grand for a night in between weeks-long stays in larger cities. One-man shows, whether comedians or singers or discussions take the stage. Itzak Perlman has performed at The Grand. So has Hal Holbrook, who marked his 90th birthday on the theater’s stage, presenting his much-acclaimed Mark Twain Tonight. Tommy Tune has danced there. Willie Nelson has sung there. So have Lyle Lovett and Ray Charles and the Vienna Boys Choir. “Shows like these are wonderful in here,” says Patton, pointing out that the 1,000-seat theater allows for an intimate space that lets the audience feel close to the action. “This is part of the charm of seeing a performance here.” They can also tour the space and learn more about its history; tours are offered daily, allowing visitors an up-close look at this historic space, which was the Official Opera House of the State of Texas in 1993. But the value of The Grand is more than historic; it’s responsible for injecting nearly $12 million a year to the local economy. “We’ve very much a part of the Island,” says Patton, who’s been at the helm for nearly 35 years. “This theater helps the cultural life of Galveston thrive.”

Maggie Taylor, The Menagerie, 2015

Several years ago, I attended the AIPAD fair and was asked by a collector, “What is your gallery’s specialty?” “Photography,” I responded. He said, “Well, I know that. But what is your specialization?” I smiled. “Good photography.” That’s all there is to it. I want Catherine Couturier Gallery to be a bastion of excellence and honesty with a dedication to the medium in all its forms, but my highest goal will always be to showcase the best fine art photography I can. Our doors were opened in 1996, in our current location on Gallery Row. The gallery quickly evolved into the premier photography gallery in Houston. John sadly passed away in 2008 after a one-month battle with pancreatic cancer but not before insuring the gallery’s future by passing the torch to me. I worked for John for eight years before his death as the gallery manager and director, and I take the responsibility of carrying on the John Cleary Gallery tradition with all the gravitas it is due. Under my ownership, the gallery has evolved to embrace that which John and I both loved (mid-century French street photography and portraits of children, to name two) and more contemporary art that was always my area of expertise. The range of work represented is broader, and my eye is apparent on every wall and in every bin. It is now very much Catherine wartists and these works of art. I love selling art, but that isn’t the reason I own a gallery. My philosophy on dealing art has always been that it is not my job to sell anything to anyone. I am here to present amazing work, offer comprehensive information and facilitate one finding a photograph that will enhance his or her life. I love meeting firsttime collectors who are really excited about a purchase, and I find a lot of joy in tracking down a rare or sold-out piece for a collector with a special request. The Catherine Couturier Gallery is a member of AIPAD (Association of International Photography Art Dealers), and I am honored to be part of such an excellent organization. We participate in AIPAD’s “The Photography Show” each spring and various other art fairs throughout the year. I also review portfolios for organizations and festivals such as FotoFest, give lectures to artists and collectors alike, and am proud to serve on both the Advisory Council of Houston Center for Photography and its annual auction committee. Please pursue the website, and let us know if we can help. We hope to meet you soon. Catherine Couturier, Owner/Director

LAURENZO’S RESTAURANT In 1946, Domenic “Tommy” Laurenzo met Ninfa Rodriguez while she was visiting her twin sister Pilar DiMeo in Providence, Rhode Island. Tommy and Ninfa were soon married and would flip a coin to see where they would plant their roots. Ninfa chose heads for Houston and Tommy chose tails for Los Angeles. Ninfa won the coin toss and so Houston was their destiny! They started their business, Rio Grande Tortilla Factory, selling corn and flour tortillas, taco and chalupa shells, barbacoa de res, tamales and pizza pies, on Navigation Blvd in Houston’s East End Second Ward. We trace our roots and our love for food to those early years begun by Tommy and Ninfa. TOASTERS BREAKFAST & LUNCH CAFE

Toasters Houston is a quaint café in Downtown’s Historic Warehouse District that serves up classic favorites in a modern setting. What do Houstonians love about this place? For starters, the decadent bananas foster French toast, served with two eggs and two strips of bacon which only slightly make it breakfast, rather than the dessert it clearly is. Reviewers and locals alike rave about the scrumptious French toast, made with oversized loaves of Italian bread so big that it hangs over the sides of already oversized plates. Hearty lunch fare includes a tilapia po-boy, honey BBQ chicken sandwich, a classic club and a Philly Cheese Steak sandwich meant to fuel you for the day as you explore Houston. The cozy atmosphere is relaxing with friendly staff ready to serve you with Houston’s hospitality. Check out this local favorite. Toasters Houston is open Monday–Sunday from 8:00 a.m.–2:00 p.m. 1004 N. San Jacinto Street
