Q: What is your favourite thing about Melbourne in the summertime?

A: The more consistent warm weather. The city is a-buzz with outdoor activities such as the Australian Open—a great day out even if you’re not a massive fan of tennis. Melbourne’s rooftop bars and beer gardens are the places to be to enjoy a cold beverage in the sunshine! Q: Lunar New Year celebrations take place this month. Where is the best place to go for authentic Chinese food?

A: Chinatown without a doubt! They know how to celebrate and get very festive, blocking off areas and setting up street stalls. Q: Do you have any tips for bargain-hunters this sale season?

A: The New Year and summer sales flow into February and you can nab yourself a bargain just about anywhere. Emporium has a diverse range of shops and outlets. You can really immerse yourself there and come out with a few good deals. Q: Where do you go to escape the heat?

A: I find the Royal Botanical Gardens a great way to keep cool;

the natural greenery certainly brings the temperature down. The Children’s Garden has a play fountain for the kids and a small stream for them to explore while parents can watch on from a picnic rug. Q: Melbourne is arguably the sporting capital of Australia. What is your pick of sporting events this month?

A: Easily the ICC Cricket World Cup T20 series will be the event to head to. The atmosphere is going to be electric! (The ICC Women’s T20 World Cup will take place from 21 February.)

CROSSING LINES A clash of two New York giants comprises this year’s NGV Summer Blockbuster. EACH YEAR OVER THE MELBOURNE SUMMER the city’s most

significant public gallery—National Gallery of Victoria— holds a “Summer Blockbuster” exhibition that brings the world’s most important artists through its doors and stages their work in radical new ways. This year, the exhibition is a collision of two luminaries from 1980s New York: Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat. Although both artists have had retrospectives in many of the world’s major galleries, never before have their works been shown side-by-side, despite their close working relationship and ongoing mutual admiration. “Keith Haring | Jean-Michel Basquiat: Crossing Lines” showcases their significant works alongside one another while examining how they influenced each other’s practices. Year of the Rat: Where to Celebrate Fireworks, feasts and fiery beasts take over this month. By Kirsty Sier.

LUNAR NEW YEAR celebrations are rooted in thousands of years of custom and tradition, and in Melbourneâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;a city with a rich Chinese and Asian heritageâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;the festivities tend to spill over the city in a rush of sight, sound, smell, colour and performance. Since late January, the city streets from Queensbridge Square to Southgate, South Wharf to Docklands have been alive with light

installations, street performances, outdoor food stalls, exquisite traditional clothing and acrobatic lion dances, which will continue until 9 February. One of the most impressive spectacles of the festival will take place in Chinatown on 2 February, when Chinatown will erupt in stunning hues of red and gold for the official Chinatown Chinese New Year Festival. The spectacular centrepiece

of this event is the Melbourne Dai Loong Dragon Parade. Beginning in the heart of Chinatown at 11.30pm, the Dai Loong— Melbourne’s big dragon—will weave its way towards the CBD in a shimmying line of colour, music and dance. Outside of this main event, the Chinatown precinct will be overrun with lion dancing performances, cultural performances and street calligraphy demonstrations led by a veritable master of the craft. No Lunar New Year celebration would be complete without feasting. Take care to make several pitstops at the hawker stalls selling all kinds of traditional sweet and savoury delicacies.
