Find American comfort fare with creative twists, like the 72-hour Pork Belly with an apple molasses glaze, watermelon bourbon glazed Waffles & Ribs topped with white chocolate shavings and a Bloody Mary Burger made with grass-fed beef, bloody Mary mayo and bacon. Wash your food down with a local beer or unique craft cocktail.

At the Valley’s first hand roll bar and ramen restaurant, diners sit at a bar in front of a personal hand roll chef, who makes the rolls to order and then hands them over personally. The back of the restaurant is a subconcept called Uradori Izakaya—a 15-seat Japanese speakeasy with small plates and specialty cocktails.

Set in a sleek, mid-century modern space, FLINT by Baltaire features contemporary American fare accented with coastal Mediterranean and bold Middle Eastern flavors. The seasonal menus feature offerings such as Pan Roasted Diver Scallops, Fennel Crusted Pork Chop, whole roasted chicken carved tableside, as well as wood-fired pizzas.

HOOP DANCING’S ARTISTRY AND ATHLETICISM

“Hoop Dancing is a cultural tradition shared across many Tribal communities in North America,” explains Daniel Hagerty, director of strategic development and programming for the Heard Museum. A unique type of dance, it can involve the use of more than 50 hoops. “To many who participate, Hoop Dance represents an opportunity to celebrate cultural traditions, and pass them down to future generations. Because it is a form of movement that many different Tribal communities engage in, Hoop Dancing also allows for those from different Tribal backgrounds to come together in fellowship,” Hagerty explains. The hoop, a circle, is an important symbol to many Native people. The hoop itself, and the form of Hoop Dancing, represents the circle of life, the continuous

cycle of life and death, the cycle of seasons—even the male and the female. In Arizona, Hoop Dance is both practiced and celebrated—and both competitions and performances are showcased. This month draws spectators and participants from North America and Canada to the Heard Museum for the 30th Annual Heard Museum World Championship Hoop Dance Contest (heard.org). The event kicks off on Friday evening, February 7, and the contest—showcasing artistry, athleticism and cultural traditions and drawing top American Indian and Canadian First Nations hoop dancers—will be held Saturday, February 8 and Sunday, February 9. There are five divisions, ranging from Tiny Tots (5 and under) to Senior (40 and older), and five judges, who hail from across the

HEARD MUSEUM, THE CONTEST’S VENUE

United States and Canada. Participants are competing for the prestigious World Champion title, as well as cash prizes. Those who will be in town through the beginning of March can attend Native Trails on March 5 (11 a.m.) and March 7 (noon). Held at Scottsdale Civic Center Park, the free event includes Native music, dance and art—including hoop dancing and traditional instruments—which are used to share the stories of Southwestern tribes (www.scottsdaleperforming arts.com). Intricate, detailed and enthralling—the art of hoop dance is a long-standing tradition in Native cultures. It was originally performed by various Indigenous communities as a healing ceremony, and today, it honors those cultural traditions as a shared artistic expression. MICHELLE GLICKSMAN

EXPLORE Destinations GLENDALE This West Valley city has stealthily prepared for the future even as it mines the past. The quaint downtown area is lined with antiques and folk art. There’s also Gila River Arena, home rink for the NHL Arizona Coyotes, and State Farm Stadium, home field for the NFL Arizona Cardinals. Visitor Center: 9494 W. Maryland Ave., Third Floor, Glendale, 877.800.2601. www.visitglendale.com SALT RIVER PIMAMARICOPA INDIAN COMMUNITY Casino Arizona, Pangaea: Land of the Dinosaurs, Huhugam Ki

Museum and Talking Stick Golf Club are just some of the activities at Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, home of two distinct tribes. Plenty of dining establishments and places to stay are available as well. www.discoversaltriver.com

Hiking Trails PIESTEWA PEAK The challenging 1.2-mile trail to the 2,608-foot summit is probably the most popular hike in the city. Families inch their way up, outdistanced by fitness buffs who try to make the round trip in less than an hour. Summit trailhead, Lincoln Drive, east of Highway 51, then north into the park. www.phoenix.gov/parks/ trails/locations/piestewa-peak
