Virginia City

Carson Valley

Emerald Bay

One of the most photographed spots on earth, Emerald Bay looks like a Norwegian fjord, dotted with one perfect feature, Fannette Island, which is topped with a stone cottage. Highway 89 hugs the steep walls above the bay, with parking available on the north and south sides. Eagle Falls tumbles down granite cliffs and empties into Lake Tahoe near one of the finest examples of Scandinavian architecture in the Western Hemisphere, Vikingsholm, built in 1929.

We walk ground where the horse species was born, surrounded by their wild descendants.

This is “big sky country” Carson Valley, Nevada, home to generations of wild mustangs.

Equus, the modern horse genus, originated in North America around 4 million years ago, the descendant of “Dawn Horse,” the origin of the species that appeared here some 50 million years earlier. The horse eventually traveled over a land bridge to Asia and Europe, but fossil records show it dying out on this continent 8,000 to 10,000 years ago, perhaps in part because of our hunter-ancestors. By the time the horse was reintroduced to the continent by the Spanish conquest of the early 1500s, man’s relationship to Equus had changed dramatically, the two species now close partners in work and adventure. But that’s not the case with the five bands that graze near us today in the Carson Valley. Although tolerant of our presence, they are wild in every sense of the word, each family group ruled by ancient instincts and a huge stallion.

“The heathiest horses you’ll ever see,“ says our guide, John “J.T.” Humphrey, describing the 80 beautiful animals of the Carson Valley wild herd that surround him. Humphrey has known many of them since they were born. He began photographing these bands over a decade ago and has since led visitors from around the world to see them. “Many people tear up,” he says. “It’s like the horses have healing powers.”

SECRETS OF THE DEEP After exploring Tahoe’s depths for over 60 years, scientists are still not sure what’s down there.

Lake Tahoe’s huge, glistening surface is an ever-changing canvas of dark blues and turquoise, speckled with white caps.

But hidden below is an immense, deep, cold world, still largely unknown. The average water molecule stays in Tahoe for 650 years. Crushed under more water than all of the manmade reservoirs in America combined, with no sunlight penetrating within 1,000 feet of its bottom, who knows what lies beneath Lake Tahoe?

Fredo’s ill-fated fishing trip in “The Godfather-Part II” (1974) famously emblazoned Lake Tahoe as a gangster graveyard, inspired by multiple tales of mob hits. Tahoe is the second-deepest lake in America, over 300 feet deeper than the Great Lakes. Water temperatures drop well below

40 degrees Fahrenheit just a few hundred feet below the surface, too cold for bacteria production or nitrogen bubbles to form and float victims back to the surface. In theory, bodies could be preserved for decades, with Tahoe’s vastness practically guaranteeing that gangsters dumped here would remain forever undiscovered. Or would they?

Tales exist of the lake giving up its dead—a perfectly preserved Indian maiden in buckskin found on an East Shore beach after a fierce storm, a hole in the lake that sucked drowned miners through underground tunnels to the Virginia City mines where their bodies were discovered.

Then in 2011 the lake did give up a victim. The body of a drowned scuba diver was spotted on an underwater WHERE GUEST B OOK

Tahoe’s native fish, the Lahontan Cut-Throat, were practically wiped out by Mackinaw and other species introduced in the 1800s, but the trout is now making a comeback, in part due to re-seeding of Fallen Leaf Lake. Other local fishing delicacies include Brown and Rainbow Trout and sweet-tasting hybrids like the “Silverside.”

Lake Tahoe is also at the forefront of inland water science.

“Tahoe is iconic,” says Dr. Geoffrey Schadlow, Director of University of California Davis’ (UCD) Tahoe Environmental Research Center, “unique in the world.” The lake’s water clarity has been measured continuously by UCD researchers since 1968, when a 10-inch-diameter white plate was visible over 100 feet down. Clarity then diminished an average of 1 foot a year until the late 1990s, when major watershed restoration was funded with bipartisan support in Congress.

Those projects proved so efficient in reducing soil erosion and runoff that the decline in clarity began to slow in the early 2000s, and then stabilized!

Today, Lake Tahoe’s water remains remarkably clear, with visibility 60 to 70 feet down. See it (or swim it) for yourself, along the shoreline or by boat. Then explore the research and science at UCD’s Tahoe Environmental Research Center in Incline Village, complete with 3-D movies.

Like many environments, Tahoe’s water clarity is under threat from climate change due to warming surface temperature and warmer storms. But today, Tahoe remains a successful example of man’s ability to preserve an environment while still enjoying it, a place whose beauty and mysteries are both remarkably preserved.

Recovered by remote-controlled mini-sub, he was almost perfectly preserved.

In Tahoe’s shallower depths can be found one of its most plentiful inhabitants, the crayfish. It’s estimated that more than 300 million of these creatures scurry along Tahoe’s sandy bottom and among the shoreline’s many boulders. In recent years, commercial operations were granted permits to catch the crustacean and sell it to local restaurants, but none proved commercially viable. Catching crayfish is a popular pastime, however, and you’ll often see kids hanging off the end of a pier dangling a string in the water.

The deepest that crayfish have been found was 820 feet in Crater Lake; Tahoe’s average depth is over 1,000 feet. So, you might not find mini-lobsters down in that darkness, but you might spot some maxi-fish. Tahoe was once part of a prehistoric ocean, and stories abound through the decades of sea monster sightings at the lake. Both native Washoe and Paiute tribe mythology includes giant inhabitants of the lake. “Tahoe Tessie,” as locals have nicknamed her, has been sighted by dozens of witnesses, including two off-duty sheriffs and U.S. Postal employees on a lunch break. Most sightings have been written off as wave crests created by far-distant boats or breezes. But others speculate that huge sturgeon might live in the depths.

Giants of a sort do inhabit Tahoe’s depths. Mackinaw trout are caught most every day of the year by guests on Tahoe charter boats. The record catch is 37 pounds. Old-timers claim there are even bigger “Macks” hundreds of feet below the surface.

Lake Tahoe is part of a closed system, its water not draining to the Pacific but heading east into the Great Basin, evaporating at Pyramid Lake. Kokanee Salmon travel up and down the watershed and each fall battle up Taylor W H E R E G UESTBO O K

Of all the fascinating characters in the history of the West, two are forever tied to Reno Tahoe. Kit Carson and James Beckwourth were both early “mountain men,� fur trappers and explorers of uncharted regions who become famous in their own lifetime for feats both real and imagined.

Both were portrayed as superhero warriors and Indian fighters in best-selling books, yet both had much more complicated relationships with Native Americans, including marrying into their tribes.

Beckwourth was a certified warrior who spent years living with the Crow, becoming their war chief. Born in 1798 to a slave mother and a white Virginia landowner father, he was granted freedom on his 19th birthday and headed west, eventually joining a fur trapping expedition to the Rocky Mountains. A formidable presence (he was nick-named Bloody Arm for his fighting prowess), he became adept at wilderness survival.

the town of Beckwourth and the Jim Beckwourth Museum, housed in his 1850 log cabin. The town is on the edge of the largest mountain valley in the Sierra, part of a scenic drive from Reno, returning through Truckee via Highway 89.

Christopher “Kit” Carson was lead scout for the John C. Fremont expedition, the first American explorers to see Lake Tahoe. Carson’s name still dots the region, largely due to well-publicized reports from Fremont, who credited the mountain man with numerous acts of heroism, including saving the expedition when they became trapped by snow during a winter crossing to California. Visitors to present-day Carson Pass on State Highway 88 experience landscapes not that different from those Fremont’s company first viewed, but now reached via all-season highway from Carson City, through Carson Valley and along the Carson River.

From 1847 to 1878, numerous dime-novel national bestsellers portrayed Carson as an invincible Indian fighter with super-human powers, almost all of the accounts 100 percent fictional and published without his knowledge. Carson was involved in numerous battles with different tribes during his lifetime, with often brutal outcomes, but he was also fluent in several Native American languages, married into the Arapaho and Cheyenne tribes and, late in life, lobbied in Washington on behalf of the Ute tribe.

Detailed in a modern best-seller by Hampton Sides, “Blood and Thunder” (2006), Carson’s story is as riveting today as it was 150 years ago, even without imaginary elements.

He was a bona fide hero of the Mexican-American War, sneaking bare-foot through enemy lines to go for needed reinforcements. Small in stature but fierce in battle, Carson often relied on his wits to survive, yet he never learned to read or write.

Whether portrayed in caricature or documented history, Kit Carson and his fellow mountain man, Jim Beckwourth, remain enduring icons of their time, both complex and fascinating, and undeniable American originals.

Beckwourth claimed to have been captured by the Crow and mistaken for the long-lost son of a chief. He lived with the tribe on and off for the rest of his life, taking several wives and leading the Crow in a victorious battle with the Blackfeet tribe. Then at middle age, he embarked on a series of adventures that included fighting the Seminole tribe in Florida, opening trade with the Cheyenne and establishing the city of Pueblo, Colorado. In 1845, he arrived in California to fight in the Mexican-American War. He then gained national fame for leading a posse that caught perpetrators of a gruesome mass murder at a California mission.

When gold was discovered near Sacramento, a flood of hopeful prospectors headed overland toward California.

Beckwourth thought he could find a lower elevation route through the formidable Sierra Nevada than the one followed earlier by the Donner Party. His discovery was a pass further to the north that is 1,800 feet lower in elevation, terminating in Marysville, California. He contracted with that town’s merchants to clear a new “Beckwourth Trail” wagon train route roughly following the Feather River. The next year, guiding his first group of settlers to California, Beckwourth got them within sight of Marysville just as it was going up in flames.

His financial backing in ashes, the mountain man licked his wounds and headed back up his trail. Near the top of the Sierra crest, he built a home, then a hotel and a trading post: War Horse Ranch. For the next six years, Beckwourth served as innkeeper and storyteller to thousands of prospectors and settlers. One of his guests was Thomas D. Bonner, an aspiring author who contracted to co-write his autobiography: “The Life and Adventures of Thomas R. Beckwourth.” Published in 1856, it became an almost-instant bestseller. In it, Beckwourth is portrayed as being present at most every noteworthy event of his time, with many of the accounts confirmed years later by other eye-witnesses.

Beckwourth left the Sierra at age 60 to live among the Crow, passing away nine years later. His legacy lives on in W H E R E G U E STBO O K
