Once known primarily for its 24-hour casino fun, Reno has sprouted new restaurant and shopping districts and become rightly famous as a world-class hub of outdoor recreation: hiking, biking, whitewater rafting, golfing and nearby ski resorts. But that’s just a taste of Reno’s offerings. A metropolitan area of about 425,000 (counting the neighboring city of Sparks), Reno has a long history of hosting world-class musicians and touring shows. The cutting-edge architecture and exhibits of the Nevada Museum of Art and Reno Philharmonic performances attract thousands every year. Visitors stroll along the Truckee River Whitewater Park and watch kayakers and colorful, migrating birds.

Virginia City
This scenic, Old West town played a pivotal role in 19th century history as the site of America’s largest silver mining strike—wealth that helped the nation overcome the Civil War and become a world power. While silver and other minerals are still mined locally, Virginia City now strikes gold with thousands of visitors annually, who enjoy strolling its wooden sidewalks, shopping for vintage and modern wares and whetting their whistles at historic saloons.
Carson Valley
Carson Valley is a wide-open, scenic valley bordered by towering Sierra peaks and the Pine Nut Mountains, dotted with the twin towns of Minden and Gardnerville and Nevada’s first settlement, Genoa (where you can still enjoy a cocktail at the state’s oldest bar). To the south is Topaz Lake and the gateway to the Eastern Sierra, while at the valley’s other end sits Nevada’s State Capital, Carson City, with attractions including the Nevada State Museum and U.S. Mint. 14

Renowned as the host of the 1960 Winter Olympics at Squaw Valley, North Tahoe is an exhilarating combination of lakeside resort towns, beaches, hiking, biking, watersports and America’s largest concentration of ski resorts, plus the Old West charm of Truckee. Many successful business, entertainment and political figures have second homes here, and spectacular estates stretch along the lakeshore from Incline Village to West Shore and in golf communities near Northstar California Resort. 16

The south shore of Lake Tahoe is a year-around vacation paradise of white sand beaches, breathtaking scenery, world-class skiing and famous name entertainment. South Tahoe traces its history to the Pony Express and explorations of Kit Carson. TWAIN IN TAHOE AND NEVADA The Sierra Nevada and its surrounding ranges inspired Samuel Clemens—and saw the birth of Mark Twain. BY ALISON BENDER
More than 150 years separates today from the date Mark Twain first saw the Sierra Nevada mountains, which separate the sapphire waters of Lake Tahoe from the sagebrush-covered Nevada hills. For Twain, who recounted his experiences in his semi-autobiographical novel, “Roughing It,” the area was a place of vigilantes and gunfights, of silver mines and riches, of natural wonders and wondrous adventures. His account lies somewhere between fact and fiction, but then, Twain did famously say, “Never let the truth get in the way of a good story.” Twain—then Samuel Langhorne Clemens—arrived in Carson City, Nevada, in August of 1861, with his brother Orion, who’d been appointed Secretary of Nevada Territory. Carson City was then a dusty, Wild West town of about 2,000 residents. While there, he writes that he had heard “a world of talk about the marvelous beauty of Lake Tahoe,” so he and a friend, Johnny, packed provisions and began their journey with the intention of taking up a wood ranch.

THE QUOTABLE TWAIN, AS EXCERPTED FROM “ROUGHING IT”
“Three months of camp life on Lake Tahoe would restore an Egyptian mummy to his pristine vigor and give him an appetite like an alligator.”
Mark Twain experienced the Wild West Gold Rush culture in Virginia City and beyond 1861-64.
“The air up there in the clouds is very pure and fine, bracing and delicious. And why shouldn’t it be?—it is the same the angels breathe.”
The pair hiked over the mountainous range until “at last the lake burst upon us—a noble sheet of blue water lifted six thousand three hundred feet above the level of the sea, and walled in by a rim of snow-clad mountain peaks… As it lay there with the shadows of the mountains brilliantly photographed upon its still surface, I thought it must surely be the fairest picture the whole earth affords.” According to Twain’s account, the pair spent a few weeks at Lake Tahoe. They staked out some land by fencing in some property and constructing a house, though the fence was incomplete and the “house” was a brush house with a “strong family resemblance to the surrounding vegetation.” Twain’s journey was still early in Lake Tahoe’s modern history, which dates to 1844, when John C. Fremont spotted it on an exploration. From his campsite, Twain noted a sawmill about three miles away (the first sawmill was built in 1860, but the industry hadn’t exploded as it would in later decades), but his surroundings were mostly sandy beaches, virgin forest and a lake so clear that objects were visible 100 feet below the surface. Twain writes, “The eye was never tired of gazing, night or day, in calm or storm; it suffered but one grief, and that was that 20

ON CARSON CITY: “It nestled in the edge of a great plain and was a sufficient number of miles away to look like an assemblage of mere white spots in the shadow of a grim range of mountains overlooking it, whose summits seemed lifted clear out of companionship and consciousness of earthly things.” “Tradition says the reason there are so many bald people there, is, that the wind blows the hair off their heads while they are looking skyward after their hats.” ON VIRGINIA CITY: “Money was as plenty as dust; every individual considered himself wealthy, and a melancholy countenance was nowhere to be seen.“
“Virginia was a busy city of streets and houses above ground. Under it was another busy city, down in the bowels of the earth, where a great population of men thronged in and out among the intricate maze of tunnels and drifts, flitting hither and thither under a winking sparkle of lights, and over their heads towered a vast web of interlocking timbers that held the walls of the gutted Comstock apart.“ “Vice flourished luxuriantly during the heyday of our “flush times.” The saloons were overburdened with custom; so were the police courts, the gambling dens, the brothels, and the jails—unfailing signs of high prosperity in a mining region—or any region for that matter.”
it could not look always, but must close sometimes in sleep.” Twain and Johnny camped on the shoreline, between two protecting boulders that spared them from the night winds. They fished (mostly unsuccessfully), played cards or, during the days, went on what Twain calls “balloon voyages,” where they would let the boat drift while laying facedown over the water. “So singularly clear was the water that when it was only twenty or thirty feet deep the bottom was so perfectly distinct that the boat seemed floating in the air!” Twain writes, noting “the water was not merely transparent, but dazzlingly, brilliantly so.” One night, Twain lit a fire, then turned away to get a frying pan. He heard Johnny shout and looked up to the see the fire “galloping all over the premises!” As the two watched, the fire spread up the mountainside and over ridges. “It was a floor fire, actually,” says McAvoy Layne, an Incline Village, Nevada-based Twain impressionist. In those days, he says, the Washoe Indians would knock the lower branches from the trees to keep small fires from spreading. However, Layne notes, “a floor fire would not sell a book.” Twain was not one to let the truth get in the way of a good story. Still, this past summer, North Lake Tahoe Fire Chief

Twain writes, “So singularly clear was the water that when it was only twenty or thirty feet deep the bottom was so perfectly distinct that the boat seemed floating in the air!”
Mike Brown presented a plaque to Layne on Twain’s behalf for the Tahoe Basin’s first prescribed burn. Twain is thought to have returned to Lake Tahoe several more times from Carson City, but it wasn’t long before he, like so many during the era, decided to chase the rich veins of silver lying under Nevada’s rocky hills. Prospectors were flocking to the Comstock Lode, which had been discovered in 1859. Twain first went south, to an area called Esmeralda, to try his luck. “Thank goodness he didn’t succeed at mining because we would never have seen a word from him,” says Layne. After his failed attempt at prospecting, Twain traveled to Virginia City. Today a town with a population of less than 1,000 (according to a 2010 census), the city was then a mining boomtown, boasting about 15,000 people and 100 saloons by 1863. Twain worked as an editor at the “Territorial Enterprise” newspaper, which claimed to be the largest weekly paid circulation in the American West. In February 1863, Samuel Clemens first used the pen name Mark Twain. He adopted the name out of deference to his brother, as his articles were sometimes unflattering to Orion’s boss, the Nevada governor.
“Mark twain” is a riverboat term, a way of saying to mark two fathoms of water, but it worked well in Virginia City, too. Twain became a regular at John Piper’s Old Corner Saloon, and when Twain arrived with a friend, Piper kept track by marking twain—or two drinks—on the chalkboard behind the bar. According to “Roughing It,“ after more than a year in Virginia City, Twain grew restless. He’d taken over as chief editor for a week while the editor, Joe Goodman, was out of town. While Twain found the job exhausting, he didn’t want to go back to being a reporter. As he writes, he “could not serve in the ranks after being general of the army.” What he doesn’t mention is that one of his articles caused controversy with a rival newspaper. Legend suggests Twain proposed a duel, though dueling was illegal and he was a terrible shot. Whatever the exact reason, Twain left for San Francisco in 1864. About leaving, he wrote, “I was bidding a permanent farewell to a city which had afforded me the most vigorous enjoyment of life I had ever experienced.” Twain went on to many more adventures, but he left a profound impact on the area. It’s clear from his writing that Nevada’s raw beauty and Lake Tahoe’s splendor left a profound impact on him, as well. WHERE GUEST B OOK

A REGION ROOTED IN JAZZ How an art form came to embody local history

BY ANNA HART
James Browns’ “Cold Sweat” reverberates through the Celebrity Showroom in Reno’s Nugget Casino Resort. The Reno Jazz Orchestra starts off the show with a bang, not a whisper. It isn’t until later that the group slows it down for a duet of an Al Green classic, “Let’s Stay Together.” In the two-hour set for a packed house of nearly 700 concertgoers, the group creates an atmosphere of funk that transcends into a living, breathing entity on stage, embodying the spirit of the musicians who came before them. The formation of the Reno Jazz Orchestra in 1997 owes a great deal to the rich jazz legacy cultivated in Reno. These musical roots are often overlooked, overshadowed by the area’s legendary casinos and watering holes. Yet Reno’s cultural identity and enduring, colorful
jazz history are intrinsically linked. The ensemble seeks to carry on the jazz tradition and subculture that once filled Reno and Lake Tahoe showrooms by reinvigorating jazz standards and big band music for modern audiences. The core group, a 17-piece collection of some of the area’s most talented musicians, regularly collaborates with renowned artists like Grammy-nominated vocalist Tierney Sutton and Rhythm and Blues Hall of Fame Inductee Trey Stone. Although deeply rooted in jazz, the ensemble explores other musical styles like Latin, swing and rock and their subtle connections with jazz. The true constant amid all of the musical variety in the group is its dedication to the aesthetic of big band music. The style reached its peak in the mid 1930s and 1940s, when the downtown casinos like Harrah’s Reno WHERE GUEST B OOK

had grand performance stages built to cater to big band jazz. But the early 1990s saw the emerging popularity of small jazz combos and pre-recorded music. The Reno Jazz Orchestra’s knack for adapting to changing audiences by integrating different genres and musical periods has allowed it to not simply survive, but thrive. The region’s jazz tradition extends beyond “The Biggest Little City.” A fascinating piece of jazz history lives deep in the veins of neighboring Lake Tahoe. While Lake Tahoe is renowned for its ski resorts and picturesque landscapes, hidden among them are historic casinos where some of the most famous (and infamous) moments in jazz history took place. These moments helped define the genre and develop the rebellious counter-culture associated with jazz music. If walls could talk, buildings like Harrah’s Lake Tahoe at the south shore and Cal Neva Resort in the north would chatter about the myriad jazz musicians who made the resorts their stomping grounds. In the 1950s, Lake Tahoe was a hub for both big band jazz and sweet-voiced crooners like those in the Rat Pack, namely Frank Sinatra. Sinatra’s visits grew so common that in 1960 he bought the Cal Neva resort with shareholders including Dean Martin. During Sinatra’s ownership, the Cal Neva Resort became a bustling scene with A-list clientele in the musical realm and beyond, including Lucille Ball and Marilyn Monroe. But underneath the cosmopolitan facade were allegations of mafia connections and FBI
scrutiny. The resort eventually fell into a decline and closed in 2013. The 10-story resort is set to reopen in 2016 as part of the international Starwood Hotels brand following extensive renovations. Cal Neva wasn’t the only swinging place back then. At the south end of the lake, the South Shore Room in Harrah’s Lake Tahoe blossomed in the 1960s as a jazz epicenter in its own right, with the likes of Nat “King” Cole and Sammy Davis Jr. gracing its stage. Back in Reno, local organizations have worked to keep jazz relevant in the region. One of the largest endeavors is the Reno Jazz Festival, which grew from a humble 1964 effort to showcase and cultivate the best of the Reno jazz scene into a nationally recognized event. Since its inception, the festival has fostered an artistic exchange between local jazz musicians and students and worldrenowned professional musicians. At the University of Nevada, the Reno Jazz Department has been instrumental in preserving and enriching the musical identity of the city, educating young musicians and creating opportunities for students and faculty to perform in town, be it in smaller jam sessions or larger ensemble performances. Today, Reno is undergoing a major transformation, from a city of known for its vices to a city known for its cultural renaissance. The Reno Jazz Orchestra is playing a major role in this transformation, keeping music at the forefront. In the ever-changing Northern Nevada identity, jazz has become an essential constant.
