o many restaurants, so little time! St. Louis' dining scene rivals America's largest cities for its vibrant and diverse restaurants—our South Grand neighborhood alone, with its eateries from 14 different countries, is unofficially known as having "more ethnic cuisine than Epcot." South Grand is St. Louis' most recent Green Dining District, of which we have three, including the nation's first, Maplewood (The Loop is the second). To be part of the Green Dining Alliance, at least 25 percent of a neighborhood's restaurants must follow environmentally-responsible practices. Many participating restaurants have achieved 5-star status. While you're here, don't miss out on St. Louis' signature toasted ravioli. Head to The Hill, which celebrates the city's Italian-American heritage, to enjoy it in one of the many mom-and-pop restaurants. Another specialty, St. Louis-style thin-crust pizza, should also be experienced—it's made with with Provel cheese, a combination of Swiss, cheddar and provolone cheeses. Follow your carb-loading with an over-the-top creation from one of St. Louis' great sweet shops—full details on p. 14. Bon appetit!

Sweets for Your Sweet St. Louisans can’t get enough of cupcakes, waffles and ice cream treats. From award-winning creations to local institutions, these are some of our favorites. JENNIFER MCKEE
LEFT: BOARDWALK WAFFLES & ICE CREAM; RIGHT: THE CUP
Bravo for Baked Goods A tempting bakeshop with locations in the Central West End (314.367.6111) and Edwardsville (618.656.2287), The Cup is informed by the travels of owner and founder Ericka Frank. The menu is full of sweet treats: classic cupcakes, limited-edition flavors, seasonal specials, even gluten-free and vegan offerings (none of them less dreamy). Dogs can enjoy biscuits or pupcakes. Be sure to stay abreast of its cupcake calendar. Winners of the sixth season of the Food Network’s “Cupcake Wars,” The Sweet Divine (314.669.9339) is a labor of love for owners Jenna and Jason Siebert. cakes with her mother, and Jason’s grandfather Art was a baker for more than 40 years. Witness— then bite into—their tempting creations at the Soulard shop. An artsy bakeshop, SweetArt (314.771.4278) is the brainchild of another husband/wife team, Cbabi and Reine Bayoc. Cbabi is responsible for the art; Reine the traditional, gluten-free and vegan treats that range from cakes and cinnamon rolls to brownies and cupcakes. Count Beyonce among her fans: During the superstar’s Formation Tour, her staff contacted SweetArt for hundreds of cupcakes.

Ted Drewes Frozen Custard (314.481.2652) is known for its thick concretes topped with fresh fruit, fudge, nuts and whipped cream. The original location on Chippewa is celebrating its 90th anniversary. Find out why it’s so beloved—but get in line early! A truly handcrafted experience, Clementine’s Naughty And Nice Creamery (314.858.6100) uses only the purest of creams and ingredients from St. Louis’ own breweries, bakeries, distilleries and restaurants, churned by hand in small batches. Taste the original speculoos cookie in “nice” flavor Italian Butter Cookie, or go “naughty” with alcohol-infused flavors such as Manhattan, Tequila Chocolate Mole or Fireball.

Soda Fountains Sweet tooths will adore the overthe-top creations at the St. Louis Union Station Soda Fountain (314.923.3939), where all items are handcrafted the old-fashioned way. For decadence in its tallest form, order a Freak Shake, served up in a 22-ounce glass with a vanilla- or chocolate-frosted rim, topped with candy, cookies, cupcakes, cinnamon rolls—it’ll reach beyond what you’ve ever believed can be placed atop a milkshake. Delicious and unique ice cream concoctions are built inside the Fountain on Locust (314.535.7800), an artsy and historic space that was once home to The Supreme Car Company, which sold the iconic Stutz Blackhawk and Bearcat. In ice cream form, the Bearcat is hot fudge over vanilla ice cream and hot caramel sauce over butter pecan on a bed of fresh bananas with homemade whipped cream. Another don’tmiss: the ice cream martinis.
Marvelous Mash-up St. Louis’ newest delights purveyor, Boardwalk Waffles & Ice Cream (314.449.1209), is now open in The Grove. Hot, Belgian-style waffles are made to order, then loaded up with ice cream and toppings and presented ice cream sandwich-style. Oh, the goodness as the ice cream melts into the waffle—if it’s around that long.

The Best Barbecue in St. Louis
ABOVE: ©SW LOUIS. AT RIGHT AND OPPOSITE: ©AMY SCHROMM PHOTOGRAPHY
St. Louis is one of the world’s top destinations for barbecue. And indeed, pit masters here have been serving up juicy, smoked meats for decades. Although the city is closely identified with pork ribs, eateries here make just as succulent smoked turkey, chicken, beef brisket and sausages. Join us on a tour of our favorites. Most restaurants serve until they run out for the day—so get there early. JENNIFER MCKEE
PAPPY’S’ RIBS WITH FRIED CORN ON THE COB AND SWEET POTATO FRIES
Pappy’s Smokehouse (314.535.4340) in Midtown (and coming soon to St. Peters, 636.244.5400) was born out of the love of the barbecue pit. Cofounders John Matthews and Mike Emerson brought their knowledge from the barbecue competition circuit and passion for great ‘cue to this go-to eatery also known for its stellar service. Meats are slow-smoked for up to 24 hours over sweet apple or cherry wood and served undressed, so guests can add their own sauce choice. Food Network named Pappy’s’ ribs the “Best Ribs in America.” Also of note are its pulled pork, brisket, turkey and burnt ends. A sister property to Pappy’s, Bogart’s Smokehouse (314.621.3107)
in Soulard wins over guests with its elevated approach to smoked tri-tip sirloin, pastrami and apricot-bruleed ribs. Sides get special attention here as well: among the choices are Pit-Baked Beans, Sweet & Sour Slaw and Fire and Ice Pickles. Apple butter-glazed ribs, cranberryglazed smoked chicken and smoked salami make mouths water at Adam’s Smokehouse (314.875.9890). Its founders worked together at Pappy’s for years before opening Adam’s, named for a friend and colleague who passed away, in The Hill. Sample a variety of meats on the restaurant’s carry-out and family packs, which make it easy to grab your meal and go.

BBQ Known for its baby back ribs, brisket and specialty sandwiches, downtown goto Sugarfire Smoke House (314.394.1720) has been lauded by the Travel Channel and made appearances on “Pitmasters,” “Beat Bobby Flay” and “Burgers, Brew and Que.” Chef Mike Johnson cooked under Emeril Lagasse and Charlie Trotter before striking out on his own. Sugarfire’s shakes and sweets are just as tempting as its meats—you can combine them both in a pie shake.

A no-frills spot in Florissant, St. Louis Q (314.382.0709) sees a cadre of return customers for perfectly seasoned and smoked meats that include riblets, rib tips, crispy snoot, turkey legs, pig ears, catfish and more. Many of these selections are not found in other St. Louis-area barbecue spots. Among the quality meats found at Doc’s Smokehouse (618.656.6060) are USDA prime brisket and Duroc pork. The Edwardsville, Illinois establishment’s most popular choices are its burnt
ends, St. Louis spare ribs, a Smokehouse burger and 32oz, thick-cut pork steak. Barbecue and Mexican meet at Spare No Rib (314.354.8444) in Benton Park, where the menu is of full of sopes, tacos and rib & taco combos. Its beer menu is just as long as its food menu, with plenty of local, nationally known and Mexican-style selections. Honey Pit Smokehouse (314.698.2121) uses stateof-the-art water smokers to infuse its meats with
moisture, the method used by eight-time World BBQ champion Myron Mixon. The Kirkwood eatery uses a mix of pecan, oak and hickory to create a unique flavor. Cahokia, Illinois’ Sawmill BBQ (618.332.3000) gets raves for its barbecue nachos, corn nuggets, potato salad and sandwiches such as the Pig Daddy, with pulled pork, bacon and a hot link. The meat love continues with smoked turkey breast, baby back ribs and a 20-oz. pork steak.

Salt+Smoke gets high marks when it comes to both barbecue and sustainability—its restaurants are members of the Green Dining Alliance and can be found in the Central West End, the Delmar Loop, Hampton Avenue and St. Charles, with a Ballpark Village location to open soon (314.727.0200). Barbecue pork, grass-fed beef, pastured Amish chicken and vegetarian falafel burgers are but of few of its delights. Eat barbecue, then take meat to go and try your hand at home at The Grove’s Beast Butcher & Block (314.944.6003). Pit masters and owners David and Meggan Sandusky’s succulent selections include Double R brisket, Hotwurst, smoked cauliflower and, for the hearty eater, a 30-oz. pork steak. Choices in the butchery include everything from fresh beef, pork, poultry and sausages to charcuterie, deli and dairy products. Its sister location, Beast Craft BBQ (618.257.9000), is across the river in West Belleville, Illinois. BOGART’S’ BURNT ENDS SANDWICH

Beer Lovers, Unite! Beer and St. Louis are synonymous. The city is home to one of the world’s best known and loved brands, Anheuser-Busch, but also to local favorites such as Schlafly, Urban Chestnut and other craft breweries that are pushing the envelope. Explore with us as we delve deeper into St. Louis’ rich craft-beer scene. You won’t be disappointed. As previously mentioned, no round-up of St. Louis beer would be complete without Anheuser-Busch. Founded in 1852, the brand’s largest and oldest brewery stands proudly in Soulard. Also on site at the 142-acre facility is the Anheuser-Busch Biergarten (314.557.2626), which offers 15 beers on tap, beer flights and Bavarian-style food choices. Schlafly‘s downtown taproom (314.241.2337), was the city’s first brewpub to open since Prohibition, and has been in operation since 1991. Its Ibex Cellar beers, which include a saison, stouts and a Sour Oak Ale, are produced exclusively at this location, which puts out a select 2,000 barrels each year. In 2003, Schlafly Bottleworks in Maplewood (314.241.2337) opened as a distribution and production facility, making more than 60 styles and shipping them throughout a 14-state region. Among creative choices on tap are the Keller Pils, Maibock and Raspberry Hefeweizen.

Schlafly Bankside (314.241.2337) stood for 25 years as Trailhead Brewing Company in St. Charles, in the middle of a National Historic District. It was here, on the bank of the Missouri River that Lewis and Clark began their famed expedition. The building is rich in history itself, serving as a grist mill in 1769, a woolen mill in 1851 and a cannery business in 1922. The Bankside Lager and Kentucky Mule Ale are exclusive to the location.

Urban Chestnut Brewing Company calls its philosophy “Beer Divergency,” which merges the approaches of the Old World with the New World. Thus, American craft beers meet the traditions of classic European brewing and small batches of Bavarian brewed and DIN IN G GUI DE | ST. LOUI S 2 5

imported beers. One of Urban Chestnut’s newest is a brew it produced for the St. Louis Zoo, the STL Zoo Bier; for every case sold, $3 is donated to the zoo’s conservation work. Locations include the Bierhall in The Grove and the Midtown Biergarten. (314.222.0143)
Not only is 4 Hands Brewing Company (314.436.1559) dedicated to crafting top-notch beer, it also supports St. Louis-area and regional nonprofits in the process. With its City Wide (American pale ale) and City Wide Pils (American pilsner), 4 Hands donates $1 per case sold to local charities. Perennial Artisan Ales (314.631.7300) brews with the adventurous craftbeer drinker in mind, with a focus on small batches made from local and organic ingredients whenever possible. Unforgettable selections at its South Carondelet tasting room include 17, an Imperial stout with cacao nibs and mint leaves; Apparent Destination, a saison with aged hops, Missouri wildflower honey, black peppercorn and plums; and Funky Wit Raspberry Rhubarb. Ferguson Brewing Company‘s (314.254.7359) 20-barrel system produces eight year-round selections and rotating seasonal beers. Drafts include fruit beers such as the Mixed Melon Blonde II, Blackberry Helles and Peach Wheat; malty selections such as the St. Louis Pale Ale and an Irish Red, in which six different malts are used, and an oatmeal and Imperial stout.

When Square One Brewery (314.231.2537) came on the scene in 2006, it did so with the objective of producing the highest quality, unique flavors. With selections such as Strawberry Wheat, Margarita Weiss, Maple Stout and Oh Hawaii—which includes caramelized pineapple—Square One lives up to that goal. The brewery resides in a restored building in Lafayette Square that’s on the National Register of Historic Places.

The staff here is serious about craft beer, and we’re grateful. Head to The Hill to find 20 different choices on tap, such as Hibiscus Wit, Key Lime Brewligans and Cat Spit Stout. Inquire about specialty beers—2nd Shift produces many—and be sure to ask for the story behind the name of the stout. With beers named Saluki Dunkeldog, Galaxy IPA and Big Muddy Monster, you’ll be intrigued by the choices at Big Muddy Brewing (618.684.8833), found in Murphysboro, Illinois. Don’t miss the guest taps, which have recently poured Summer Shandy and Pink Lemonade Cider. Enjoy the weather outdoors in Big Muddy’s beer garden.

Named after a small village in Ireland, Six Mile Bridge Beer (314.942.2211) is a convergence point where locals and visitors can stop in for a friendly pint of beer. The Maryland Heights brewery produces a variety of global styles, such as a Bavarian Hefeweizen, Belgian Dubbel, Coffee Maple Stout (brewed with Guatemalan coffee beans) and a French Saison.
