very winter humpback whales migrate to Hawai‘i from the Pacific Northwest and Alaska, making the six-week journey to bask in Maui’s warm waters. They’re here to mingle, mate and calve—and it all takes place just a few miles off Maui’s leeward coast. It’s one of nature’s most magnificent shows that you won’t want to miss while you’re here on vacation. Other not-to-be-missed adventures also await. Maui Off-Road Adventures leads UTV (utility task vehicle) enthusiasts across dry land and lush tropical forest. And, if you would prefer to see trees from a bird’s-eye view, then book a zipline tour with Skyline Eco-Adventures. And no trip to Maui is complete without attending a lū‘au. The dinner show gained fame in the 1950s when ocean liners began bringing in tourists who were eager to learn island customs. These shows have been a mainstay ever since.

Through their efforts, millions of people have learned about whales and other marine creatures, such as dolphins, Hawaiian monk seals, sea turtles and the endangered Hawaiian population of false killer whales. The Foundation also inspires future ocean stewards through its Keiki Whalewatch program, which encourages kids to learn about the ocean by getting a closer look at whales and other marine animals. “The program provides [a chance] for students to get a faceto-fluke experience with humpback whales,” notes education manager Robyn Elrich on the Foundation’s blog. “For me, the program provides an opportunity to spend time with students and introduce them to the amazing creatures that spend the winter right here in our own backyard. I begin every program by asking the students this question: who has ever been on a boat to watch whales before?” To find out more about Pacific Whale Foundation, call 808.249.8811 or visit www. pacificwhale.org.

he ‘Au‘au Channel, between Maui and the neighboring islands of Moloka‘i, Lāna’i and Kaho’olawe, teem with thousands of humpback whales right now, and you can venture on the high seas to watch these massive mammals breach, slap their tails and flukes against the water, and see water spout from their blowholes as they breathe and surface for air. As many as 10,000 whales could be in the area over the course of the season, and since adult humpbacks surface about every 10-15 minutes to breathe, and calves need to come up for air about every 3-5 minutes, there will never be a dull moment while on a whale-watching tour. Male humpback whales are also known for the mysterious and haunting sounds they make underwater, called “whale songs.” These complex songs vary in frequency, and scientists are still trying to understand why only the male humpbacks “sing,” sometimes continuously for hours. For more than 40 years, naturalists and researchers with the Pacific Whale Foundation have conducted studies and collected
