ne of the best-kept secrets in the Sonoran desert is the historic frontier village of Tubac, a thriving arts community just 45 minutes south of Tucson. It’s a perfect day trip for the entire family.
Tubac was established in 1752 as a Spanish Presidio (fort) and over the decades evolved into a jewel of a town found in the middle of the desert, featuring fine art galleries, quirky gifts, specialty mesquite furniture with turquoise inlay designs, clothing, southwestern jewelry stores and restaurants. Artists have been flocking to Tubac since the 1930s. Much like Impressionist artists from the 1860s, they too were attracted to the unique quality of the bright sun, clear skies and arid atmosphere that filters the dust particles, creating a screen of warm color. The inherent beauty of the desert and its intense monsoon season inspired artists to paint dramatic and inspirational landscapes. Art enthusiasts will enjoy spending time in the Tubac Center of the Arts before exploring the various fine art galleries containing world class art. Love history? Begin with a tour of Tumacácori Mission National Historical Park and then make your way over to Tubac Presidio State Historic Park. For the shopaholic types, there are over 100 little boutiques scattered throughout the area. Meander through the streets, each shop quirkier and more unusual than the next. Storefronts are decked out in dazzling colors overflowing with kitsch art and hand made artisan metal flowers. Sculptures and sparkling wind catchers will entice you to shop for those one-of-a-kind items you will never find anywhere else. If jewelry is your passion, the turquoise collections are one of the best in the country. Love the outdoors, wildlife and birding? Hiking the Anza Recreational Trail provides stunning desert views as you traverse the dirt path for an easy to moderate stroll. For the history enthusiast, learn about the story of Juan Bautista De Anza in the sites that have been preserved. After nourishing your soul with art and the beauty of the desert, it’s time to replenish your energy with delicious fare from any of Tubac’s fine restaurants. Among the many restaurants is Elvira’s, one of the top 50 restaurants in Arizona. The dimly lit interior is bedazzled with an explosion of vibrant color cascading down from the ceiling, creating a decadent ambiance and experience that is as unforgettable as the Mexican cuisine. Those seeking much needed leisure time will enjoy one of Tubac’s gems, the AAA Four-Diamond-rated Golf Resort and Spa, situated in an exclusive area a few miles from the center of town. The Stables Restaurant features intimate seating at tables or on saddles at the bar for the wannabe cowboy. The enormous arched windows in the dining room provide views of the rolling green golf course and

With all of these exciting things to do and more, Tubac is a gem waiting to be explored, and whether you’re an artlover, historian, shopaholic, nature-lover, foodie or all of the above, this is a day trip you simply can’t pass up. w w w.wh e re t rave le r.c o m

Navigate
Tombstone The sight of the original O.K. Corral where the famous 30-second shootout took place as the Clanton-Mclaury gang opened fire against Doc Holiday and the Earp family. Today, you can enjoy daily reenactments of the fight along with many other western attractions. Tombstone, 520.457.9317, www.tombstonechamber.com
by the city, the eastern Rincon and western Tucson mountain ranges are about an hour drive apart. Both offer hiking, biking and horseback-riding trails, as well as loop roads for motorized expeditions. The Rincon district is the more ecologically diverse of the two areas, giving visitors the opportunity to experience low-lying desert and high-country forest in a single day. In the Tucson district, hundreds of petroglyphs left by ancient Native tribes can be spotted easily from Signal Hill. www.nps.gov/sagu. Park headquarters: 3693 S. Old Spanish Trail, 520.733.5153. Tucson Map B4
MOUNT LEMMON The great Mount
Lemmon is named after one of its first recorded conquerors: Sara Plummer Lemmon, a botanist, who in 1881, became the first woman to reach its summit. Nowadays, you don’t have to be a pioneer to reach the 9,157-foot peak, but a daredevil streak doesn’t hurt. The Catalina Highway winds up, down and around Mount Lemmon, roller-coaster-style, coming to a halt in the little mountaintop town of Summerhaven. Gorgeous overlooks along the highway—with such curious names as Hoodoo at Windy Point, Sykes Knob and Inspiration Rock—afford mileslong views of the city and desert below. SCOTTSDALE You can still buy a
cowboy hat, a pair of cowboy boots, Western and American Indian art, souvenirs and a hand-scooped sundae here. An influx of hipster investors and a boom in infill development have just added edgier art galleries, trendy gelato shops and mixed-use high-rise developments to the landscape. Pedestrians have it easy, events and festivals are plentiful, and parking is still free. Scottsdale is also home to the largest aquarium in the Southwest U.S., the Odysea Aquarium, and interactive rainforest Butterfly Wonderland. www. experiencescottsdale.com. TUBAC Just 40 minutes south of Tucson
is the historic village of Tubac. It was established in 1752 as the first Spanish fort in Arizona, but now the town is largely populated by working artists featuring more than 100 galleries. www.tubacaz.com. Tubac Chamber of Commerce, 520.398.2704. Arizona Map D7

Tucson Your Way UNIQUE TRAVEL RECOMMENDATIONS, FIT TO MATCH YOUR PERSONAL STYLE. FIND THE CITY CURATED FOR YOU AT WHERETRAVELER.COM/TUCSON
Relaxation
Late Nights
History Buffs
Enjoy the spoils of nature at (1) Sabino Canyon as a number of trails provide breathtaking views and calming waterfalls, making for a nice relaxing spot to enjoy a break from the city life. If you want to reach inner nirvana, (2) YogaOasis can take you there with their very own rooftop yoga atop Playground Bar & Lounge, which provides beautiful views of downtown Tucson as well as the surrounding mountains. After all of that moving, have someone else do all the work for you and relax those tired muscles at the (3) Hiapsi Spa at the Casino Del Sol.
Challenge your friends with some fun and games during the late hours of the night at (1) Hi Fi Kitchen & Cocktails where Jenga, bean bag tossing boards, shuffleboard, pool, a DJ booth, 45 HDTVs and projection screens keep the party going. Voted Best Cocktail Menu by “Tucson Weekly,” (2) Sky Bar will be sure to have you star-struck as telescopes are available out on the patio every night. For a more lax evening, gulp down some of the best local beers and wines or sip on some local and regional whiskeys and agave-based spirits at (3) Good Oak Bar.
The Old Pueblo is rich in history and there is no shortage of ways to learn the city of Tucson’s backstory. Start off with the (1) Arizona State Museum with exhibits that explore the history of the indigenous peoples of the region. Afterwards travel to the oldest intact European structure in Arizona, the (2) Mission San Xavier del Bac, which houses a museum that digs deep into the history of the current church. If you’re an art lover, the (3) Tucson Museum of Art and Historic Block has a vast collection of art, including art of the American West.
