On the National Registry of Historic Places, Inman Park was home to the city’s first streetcar line, which ran from Edgewood Avenue to the Trolley Barn, which is still located at 963 Edgewood Avenue. Inman Park is characterized by its curved, tree-lined streets filled with restored circa 1800s Victorian houses and open green spaces. This picturesque area brims with historic homes, new lofts and condos,

SNOW
SWEETS
Georgians can thank their geography for manageable winters that deliver only a few inches of snow each winter. But this also makes snow a novelty for Atlantans, who love playing in the wintry powder any chance they get. Thankfully for locals and visitors, five football fields of land at the foot of the world’s largest granite monolith are covered in 360 tons of real snow per day for Stone Mountain Park’s Snow Mountain. Soar down the 400-foot, snow-covered hill at Avalanche Alley, where group-sized tubes are available for whole-family fun. Build snowmen and have snowball fights in the SnowZone. Snow Mountain’s other highlights include roasting s’mores at Snow Fire Point and Little Angels, a play zone for kids 3 and under. Tickets: $28, including two-hour tubing session and an allday snow play access. Advance reservations are highly recommended. Through Feb. 26. www.stonemountainpark.com To many, nothing embodies the holidays more than bundling up, holding onto someone’s hand and gliding on ice. Skate Atlantic Station’s 10,000-square-foot, openair ice-skating rink is one of the city’s most popular thanks to its size and convenient location. The rink is surrounded by Atlantic Station’s wide variety of shops—like Dillard’s, West Elm and Banana Republic—and restaurants for every palate. After channeling your inner Michelle Kwan, stroll a few feet away to Kilwin’s where you’ll get 10 percent off everything in the store by showing your Skate Atlantic Station wristband. Open daily. Tickets: adults $13; kids, seniors and military $10. Through Feb. 14. www.atlanticstation.com
Pies may not have originated in the South, but there’s no denying their status as a regional culinary tradition. Perhaps no other variety is as locally beloved as the pecan pie, which was a Christmastime go-to in the South before the holiday earned its place on national calendars. Order a freshly baked pie from Southern Art’s famous bakeshop, including Georgia favorites like bourbon pecan and banana pudding pies. www.southernart.com Cookie exchanges are beloved in the South for good reason. With abundant regional delicacies like pralines and pecan shortbread cookies, there are plenty of sweets to be traded. Visit Alon’s Bakery to peruse its impressive menu of holiday treats that will make you the hit of any cookie swap. www.alons.com
SWINE
One of Atlanta’s best-known and -loved winter traditions came onto the scene five decades ago. Priscilla the Pink Pig made her debut in Atlanta in 1953 as a monorail ride at Rich’s Department Store downtown, although she was originally known as The Snowball Express. Today, Priscilla is still the talk of the town when she sets up shop every year at the Macy’s at Lenox Square. So, what exactly is this holiday institution? In essence, the Pink Pig is a train ride for kids—although most adults, especially new residents, consider it a local rite of passage. Decked out in vibrant shades of pink, the vintage ride retains its 1950s appeal with midcentury memorabilia and signs from bygone days. Perhaps the best update to this holiday icon is its charitable component: a portion of the proceeds from ticket sales now benefit Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta—just another reason to love Priscilla. The ride is open daily, closed only on Christmas Day. Hours: M-F from 10am-8 pm, Sa from 10 am-9 pm, Su from 11 am-7 pm, Christmas Eve from 10 am-6 pm, and New Year’s Eve from 10 am-6 pm. Tickets: $3 per ride, two rides for $5.50, three rides for $7.50. www.macys.com/pinkpig 9

Garden Lights, Holiday Nights
INSIDER’S GUIDE
Dazzling Displays As nights become longer and the air grows colder, winter brings with it the pageantry of illumination. These exceptional light displays will leave you with a sense of wonder and a twinkle in your eye. —MICHELLE KHOURI
GARDEN LIGHTS, HOLIDAY NIGHTS Each year, Atlanta Botanical Garden cloaks its 30-acre grounds in 1.5 million glimmering lights. In its sixth year, “Garden Lights, Holiday Nights” inspires awe by illuminating the garden’s massive topiaries, winding trails and wooded areas with blazing red, orange and yellow lights. Explore the grounds, including the new Walk of Flames and expanded Tunnel of Light, roast s’mores or make a beeline for popular zones, like the Orchestral Orbs, Glittering Galaxy and Radiant Rainfor-
est. Open daily from 5-10 pm. Tickets: $17-$41. 1345 Piedmont Ave. NE, 404.876.5859. www. atlantabg.org STONE MOUNTAIN CHRISTMAS More than 2 million lights set Stone Mountain Park aglow during the annual Stone Mountain Christmas celebration. This two-month affair includes a magical lineup of activities especially well-suited for families with young kids. Perhaps the most ethereal experience in this holiday extravaganza is the brandnew Skylights Spectacular, which lands you in the middle of thousands of shimmering lights, dazzling projections, special effects and can’tmiss photo opps. Included in cost of Adventure Pass: $25.95, plus tax. 1000 Robert E. Lee Blvd., 800.401.2407. www. stonemountainpark.com. HOLIDAY IN LIGHTS Standing at nearly 60 feet high, Centennial Olympic Park’s awe-inspiring Christmas tree is the centerpiece of its stunning light display.
Each November, the 21-acre park becomes an illuminated winter wonderland featuring glowing orbs, shaped lights and holiday-themed revelry scattered about the grounds. Best yet, a 115 foot-by-64 foot skating rink is on park grounds, surrounded by the glow of these gorgeous holiday lights. 265 Luckie St. NW, 404.223.4412. www. centennialpark.com. HOLIDAY LIGHT SPECTACULAR In its first year, this massive light display is a wonderland for the senses. Held at the Atlanta Motor Speedway, Holiday Light Spectacular offers a jaw-dropping drive-through experience for viewing largerthan-life displays illuminated in brilliant colors. But that’s not the only draw. At this magnificent event, you can meet the big jolly guy himself in Santa’s Village, get your face painted, get some holiday shopping done, watch drive-in style movies, and much more. Tickets: $15-$30. 1500 Tara Place, Hampton, 678.583.4455. www. holidaylightspectacular.info

foot rink enclosed in a climate-controlled tent for icy, all-day fun. At 8:30 pm, only ages 16 and older can access the rink, which stays open until midnight. Tickets: $20 for allday pass. Through Feb. 20. (500 10th St. NE, 404.249.0001, parktavern.com).

Tickets: $14-$72. Through Dec. 24. www.alliancetheatre.org ‘NUTCRACKER’ Atlanta Ballet’s awe-inspiring production of E.T.A. ‘THE SANTALAND DIARIES’ Horizon Theatre’s annual holiday tradition is a hilarious, adults-only show about an unemployed writer who accepts a job as a Macy’s elf out of pure desperation. Before he can say “Happy Holidays,” the main character is given his elfin name, Crumpet, and embarks on a series of misadventures. The result is a sardonic, satirical and sarcastic backstage pass to the secret lives of “Santa” and his “elves.” Ages 18 and up. Tickets: general $25-$30, VIP $40-$45. Through Dec. 31. www.horizontheatre.org ‘RUDOLPH THE RED-NOSED REINDEER’ Experience Rudolph’s snowfilled and string-clad world at the Center for Puppetry Arts.
