Q&A Charlene Dunbar

À La Afrique

At age 11, Charlene Dunbar’s family fled from Liberia to the U.S. during a civil war. “[Ankara] became my connection with home,” said Dunbar, who in 2006 established Suakoko Betty, which combines the vibrancy of African textiles with modern silhouettes.

Atlanta is home to an array of African designers whose inspired goods inject vibrancy and vivacity into any wardrobe. These shops are our go-tos for high style and bold color.

Charlene Dunbar

Q: What is ankara? It’s a printed fabric that’s inspired by West African culture. It started with folks out of India trying to copy batik prints that are produced in West African countries and Japan. You lay the wax down [and then] put the dye in. They produced it on a machine. It didn’t do so well in Europe, so some of the European traders ended up taking it to Africa and it took off from there. [An ankara designer’s] job is to pay attention to what’s going on in African culture, whether it’s the rise of cell phone use or different proverbs. They interpret those proverbs, those aspects of everyday African life, into these great designs. Some of them are classic and show up every year, maybe in a different color story, and some of them have to do with the sign of the times, so you’ll have one [print that has] a cell phone and a purse and a high heel—it’s this story of what’s happening in West African culture. It’s steeped with a lot of meaning. Q: How has ankara found its place in the U.S. fashion scene? Seeing a lot of celebrities wear [ankara] was really a tipping point. Seeing ankara show up on red carpets and on different celebrity Instagrams—it

was already growing and rising amongst a lot of black women and I think, maybe two years ago, it really exploded. It’s an exciting time to be in African fashion. It’s been a blessing how far I’ve been able to go with it—being in Essence and going to New York Fashion Week and partnering with different brands and building a following. I’m grateful the idea resonates with so many people. African fashion is not just one note. There’s the sexy African fashion lane, the glamazon African fashion lane. I’d like to think I’m more the modern, clean line take on it. [Suakoko Betty is] more for the girl who’s not trying too hard—she’s artsy, she’s interesting and she’s more laid back with it. It all goes back to celebrating African design, African culture. Q: How do you recommend styling ankara? One of the most popular is a midi skirt—you can wear them with a solid top, a blazer. I’ve seen people get a lot of mileage from clutches. Not everyone is an allover print all the time kind of girl, so the print clutch is a great way to bring in that splash of color without committing to it all the way. I’m seeing blazers gain popularity, whether you want to wear them at work or with jeans for a night with the girls. The blazers are really cool because they can take you from work day all the way to the weekend. Crop tops can go a lot of different directions. For an evening event, you can pair it with a pencil skirt. For a more casual look, throw on a pair of jeans with it. And you can winterize it by putting a button-down shirt underneath it.

THE BOMBCHEL FACTORY There’s no better feeling than buying something beautiful while also supporting a small business that makes a real difference in the world. And that’s just what you’ll feel when you purchase a garment from The Bombchel Factory. After graduating from the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech), Archel Bernard (pictured right) moved to Monrovia, Liberia, and set out to change lives. Bernard started The Bombchel Factory, which employs an all-woman staff of Ebola survivors, rape victims and the deaf. Find sexy, flirtatious and statement ankara pieces, including flowy crop tops, mini skirts, maxi skirts, dresses, necklaces and more. www.shopbombchel.com

F&W STYLE From large totes to shoulder bags, African designer and former model Alexandria Alli’s line of brightly hued purses are a perfect complement to the ankara designs on this list. Priced modestly for shapes and details usually attached to heftier price tags, Alli’s designs range from energetic purples to deep reds to oranges and even metallic shades, including silver, rose gold and rose white. Two-tone totes offer a vintage feel to the modern bags, which are all leather and made to keep the busy woman organized and on the go. www.fwstyle.com

maxi dresses. We can’t get enough of Pearson’s dramatic capes (pictured below), which can be worn in a number of ways to achieve the same jaw-dropping result. www. shopmelangemode.com

SUAKOKO BETTY Charlene Dunbar’s gorgeous line combines the storied tradition of ankara with modern, clean-lined silhouettes. The vibrant patterns in the Spring collection are just asking to be mixed and matched for head-to-toe vibrancy. For the contemporary fashionista who prefers an all-black power outfit, pops of ankara can be added with Suakoko Betty’s clutches and bags. www.suakokobetty.com Mélange Mode

WHERE NOW Atlanta FASHION FIX

The Glass House From making her own prom dresses in high school to flaunting a clean and classic aesthetic on runways today, Abbey Glass’ rapid growth reflects the “less is more” lifestyle gaining ground in the U.S. We sat down with the budding designer to talk about her line, minimalism and where she thinks fashion is headed in 2017. BY MICHELLE KHOURI

How have your designs evolved in the past two years? The evolution of the line has been honing in on why I like things and what I want to achieve from them. I’m less of a fine artist and more of a designer now, because I’m trying to design things for a purpose rather than just to make something look pretty. I’ve maintained similar sensibilities about proportions, lines and structure, but I’ve allowed myself to get more complex—to add without subtracting. I think my sense of color has gotten more sophisticated. The line as a whole has become more cohesive. What are some trends for 2017? This might be a big year for people getting the clutter out of their lives. We need to be more deliberate about what we buy. How does fashion tie into this resurgence of minimalism? People are going to buy or wear things that are multipurpose. Separates are going to become really important. I’ve been designing a lot of things for that because people can get a little more bang for their buck, but it’s still interesting and not stuff y. Color will play a huge role in determining where the balance is. So, if the 10 W H E R E AT L A N TA I F E B R UA R Y 20 17

color is wild then the balance is that the silhouette is very reserved; and if the color is very reserved and more traditional then you can dig into the texture and the cut and do something a little more wild. Why do you think multipurpose fashion is catching on this year? Even in the first part of the 20th century, that’s where we were—not because of trend but because of finances or material restrictions. Right now, I think it’s because people are more aware of their carbon footprint. Minimalism is becoming popular, rather than just being a hipster thing. Tell us about your newest line. The whole [Spring 2017] line is about adventure and vacation—the Italian Riviera and Grace Kelly. It’s unapologetically feminine, but it’s clean lines. Every time we hit a more traditional color, we made sure the fabrication was exciting or that the use of color was something new and different. I know that Cinque Terra, Grace Kelly and the Italian Riviera will never not be intriguing to me and that ties back to the ethos of the clothes, which is that they shouldn’t go out of style. What are some essential pieces for a minimalist wardrobe? You need a classic party dress—that could go black tie, cocktail, New Year’s Eve party. Make sure you have that and you feel amazing in it. I think a leather jacket is important to have, and that will help you edge up any dressier or more feminine pieces. Shirt dresses are worth investing in—a very unique, cool shirt dress. They’re a really versatile, key part of a woman’s wardrobe. A classic pair of trousers that can be dressed up and down is important.

Abbey Glass

How do you define your aesthetic? We don’t want to define ourselves as Southern style. We want to define ourselves in the South as classic style that could go anywhere, that could take a person anywhere in the world and they would feel like they fit in. I think that’s what good design is. It means that you can use the product that you’re creating in a lot of different contexts. It’s not just solving one problem, it’s solving a lifestyle problem.

MAPS MAP 3 ATLANTA DOWNTOWN & INTOWN NEIGHBORHOODS

[WHERE INSIDE]

Atlanta Your Way

LGBTQ Love (1) Einstein’s sprawling patio and prime location in Midtown, Atlanta’s LGBTQ epicenter, have made this a local favorite since it opened in 1991. Don’t miss the Bloody Mary bar during Sunday brunch at this romantic spot, which is made up of three 1920s bungalows. www. einsteinsatlanta.com The ultimate in drag dining,

(2) Lips features delicious food, signature cocktails and a talented cast of female impersonators. www.lipsATL.com Get in on the worst-kept secret that is Atlanta’s most popular gay bar for men, (3) Bulldogs. This rowdy, old-school bar is never a bore and usually open until 3 am on weekends. Mary’s has been voted best karaoke in Atlanta for years thanks to the DJ’s spectacular energy. Patrons flock to this gay-friendly bar in East Atlanta Tuesday and Saturday nights for this outrageously fun “Mary-oke.” 40 W H E R E AT L A N TA I F E B R UA R Y 20 17

New Flames The couples suite at (1) The Spa at Mandarin Oriental is a lovebird's oasis. Book the Couples Journey ($570-$620) for side-by-side fullbody exfoliation and customized massages. www.mandarinoriental.com/atlanta (2) Better Half is one of the freshest dining concepts in the city. The hidden gem offers an intimate, laid-back ambiance and ever-changing menu of interesting dishes that often feature Latin influences. www.betterhalfatl.com Soar onto Cloud 9 with a 15-minute ride on (3) SkyView Ferris wheel. The 20-story ride takes 15 minutes and serves up stunning views of Downtown Atlanta. At night, SkyView lights up with millions of LED lights. www.skyviewatlanta. com Nothing spells retro romance quite like a movie night at the beloved Starlight DriveIn Theatre. www.starlightdrivein.com

Darling Day Trippers An hour drive from Atlanta, (1) Madison offers an enchanting respite with myriad flower beds providing pops of color among picturesque homes lining historic streets. Attractions include the Madison-Morgan Cultural Center, Rogers House and Heritage Hall. www.visitmadisonga. com Once an opulent 19th-century estate, (2) Barnsley Resort is now a 3,300-acre getaway located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Find your bliss among gourmet dining, gardens, historic ruins, golf courses and more. www.barnsleyresort.com In the heart of Georgia's wine country and nestled at the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains sits (3) Three Sisters Vineyards, a farm winery in Dahlonega.
