Buckhead began long ago as a quiet, rural community, which changed rapidly after Lenox Square Mall opened in 1959. 24-Hour Atlanta

Long layovers have met their match. This 24-hour itinerary is for anyone who’s ever asked, “What’s there to do in Atlanta after 1 am?” Chug that coffee and get ready to explore Atlanta’s late-night side. BY MICHELLE KHOURI

SLEEPLESS IN THE SOUTH

Atlanta may not be known as the “City That Never Sleeps” (we’re in the sleepy South, after all), but that doesn’t mean sleepless travelers are stuck twiddling their thumbs. Living up to its name as the Empire State of the South, 24-hour stops keep insomniacs occupied with everything from round-the-clock spas to always-open doughnut shops and, of course, a slew of classic day-and-night diners. Load up on caffeine, then follow our 24-hour itinerary to explore a version of Atlanta usually reserved for night owls. MIDNIGHT MUNCHING AM—You’ve just landed in the world’s busiest passenger airport, HartsfieldJackson Atlanta International Airport. It’s late and you’re probably starving. Good thing you’re in the birthplace of America’s legendary 24-hour diner: Waffle House. Visit this iconic stop for a latenight omelette, loaded sandwich or T-bone steak dinner with a side of hashbrowns “smothered,” “covered” and “topped.” In Atlanta, you’ll never have trouble finding a Waffle House nearby—seven locations surround the airport alone. www.wafflehouse.com

Waffle House breakfast

OVERNIGHT SERENITY AM—Now that you’re full, it’s time for a rejuvenating visit to Jeju Sauna. This 24hour Korean spa is well worth the 40-minute trek from the airport. Inside, an oasis of deep relaxation and tranquility awaits. For the $25 entry fee ($20 for seniors), you can spend a soothing night releasing toxins in nine themed saunas (jade steam sauna pictured on opposite page), several hot and cold baths, a lap pool and a gym. The menu of spa treatments includes hip baths for women ($30), massages ($100), foot reflexology ($60), and more. (Tip: From the airport, take the Gold line on MARTA, Atlanta’s rail transit, to the Doraville Station (last stop). Then, use a taxi service for the 15-minute ride from Doraville Station to Jeju.) www.jejusauna.com

2

EARLY-BIRD BREAKFAST AM—We’re guessing you worked up an appetite overnight, which brings us to our next stop: Metro Cafe Diner in Stone Mountain. Inside this 24-hour diner, you’ll find retro-inspired decor (think chrome, neon and red pleather). Everything on the vast and indulgent menu is made from scratch and covers a gamut of culinary influences. Pick from Greek platters, tuna melts, Cuban sandwiches and all-day breakfast. www.metrocafediner.com

6

HILLTOP HIKE AM—There’s a reason we recommended a diner in Stone Mountain, and that’s so you could be close to Stone Mountain Park, where you’ll embark on a scenic sunrise hike. Pay the $10 parking fee to park in the Confederate Hall lot. Then, begin your one-mile journey to the peak marked by a yellow painted line. Once you reach the summit (1,686 feet above sea level), you’ll see breathtaking views of Atlanta’s glimmering skyline and the North Georgia Mountains. www.stonemountainpark.com

7

SWEETS, SIGHTS & SAUCE AM-6 PM—There’s plenty to do during your daylight hours, so we’ll keep our suggestions snappy. After hiking two miles, what better treat than a freshly baked donut and pipinghot cup of coffee? That’s why we suggest making a stop at Sublime Doughnuts (open 24 hours). www.sublimedoughnuts.com

Once you’ve refueled, head downtown for the 10:30 am Peachtree Trolley Tour. This 90-minute tour aboard a climate-controlled trolley covers many of the city’s major attractions while a realdeal Southern docent recounts Atlanta’s history. Tickets: $15-$30. www.thepeachtreetrolley.com Next up is lunch at one of our favorite barbecue joints: Twin Smokers BBQ. Order your meal at the counter, where you can pick from chicken, pork, brisket and more accompanied by classic sides like mac n’ cheese, collards and coleslaw. www.twinsmokersbbq.com A brisk walk through Centennial Olympic Park will land you at your next destination, one of the world’s largest aquariums. It’s easy to spend a day observing the thousands of aquatic species in Georgia Aquarium’s 10 million gallons. Be sure to give yourself until the 5 pm closing time to enjoy everything this worldfamous attraction has to offer. Tickets range from $33-$39. www. georgiaaquarium.org No trip to Atlanta would be complete without a visit to its shopping mecca, Buckhead. In just one mile you’ll find luxurious Phipps Plaza, mid-priced Lenox

Square Mall and the haute Shops Buckhead Atlanta. Each destination offers an array of dining options—from Shake Shack to True Food Kitchen. (Tip: Opt for a light snack while you shop so you don’t spoil your dinner!) PERSIAN DECADENCE PM—Speaking of dinner, located between Lenox Square and The Shops Buckhead is Divan, a veritable feast for the senses. With a kitchen that closes at 1 am and hookah service on its second level, this chic restaurant was made for late-night indulgence. The menu is a roll-call of decadent Persian and Mediterranean dishes prepared to perfection. Try the crispy yet tender duck leg confit or the exceptional lamb chops. www.divanatlanta.com

9

CAT NAP AM—Congratulations! You made it to the end of our marathon itinerary. Reward yourself with a nap before your flight. Minute Suites are small, rentable rooms in the airport made for resting. Each suite features a daybed, HDTV, free WiFi and a sound-masking system. Find Minute Suites after security at Gate B16. www.minutesuites.com

Majestic Diner

wheretraveler.com for more Atlanta MARIETTA DINER

This family owned diner has earned its reputation as one of the best in the nation by keeping its food consistently delicious, even though it offers hundreds of dishes in a wide variety of styles and cuisines 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. This impressive and hardworking team has kept the “yums” coming without pause since the restaurant opened in 1995—no wonder it’s included on national best-of lists year after year. www.mariettadiner.com MAJESTIC DINER This aptly named diner is one of Atlanta’s most beloved. Situated in the center of the city, the Majestic (as it’s known to locals) is the stuff of all-day breakfast legends. Pick from an ample selection of omelet (like our favorites, the spinach feta omelet and gyro omelet), or opt for classic egg combos with grits and toast. To spice things up, you can also dig into Southwestern egg specialties like eggs rancheros with chorizo. www.majesticdiner.com

ROUND-THE-CLOCK RESTAURANTS

24-Hour Bites

A neverending flow of delectable dishes may seem like a distant dream, but at these diners, it’s a 24/7 reality. Whether you’ve welcomed the wee hours of the morning by bar-hopping on Edgewood Avenue or finished up a long spell of latenight work, midnight munchies have met their match. At these quintessential eateries—which include everything from tried-and-true family establishments to longstanding icons and even one that inspired a play—menus overflow with abundant and diverse options while display cases lined with frosted delights summon your sweet tooth. Our 24-hour roundup will guide nighttime noshers like a tasty beacon in the hungry night, no matter the craving, day of the year or hour of the night. So worry not, midnight munchers, these stops have you covered. —MICHELLE KHOURI 10 W H E R E AT L A N TA I J A N UA R Y 2017

WAFFLE HOUSE We touched on this iconic establishment on page 9, but Waffle House is such a local treasure that we’d be remiss not to include

them on this list. This institution is so famous in Atlanta that a local theater company, Horizon Theatre, commissioned a riotous play, “The Waffle Palace,” to pay homage to the wacky characters that stroll through during the otherwise still hours of the night. www.wafflehouse.com R. THOMAS DELUXE GRILL This extravagantly decorated 24-hour eatery embraces its “you are what you eat” motto by using high-quality ingredients like cold-pressed organic oils, fresh produce and organic grains throughout its menu; the result is food that tastes as good as it makes you feel. Make sure to say hi to Mr. Thomas’ birds as you walk up from the parking lot. www.rthomasdeluxegrill.net

A SOUTHERN LANDMARK Like a multicolored spotlight, the original Landmark Diner is hard to miss. Tom and Carolyn Lambrou opened their neon-encrusted establishment in 1994 after owning several diners in New York. According to Lambrou, who moved to the U.S. from Greece in the late 1960s, owning a diner is part of the Greek-American lifestyle. Indeed, Landmark is a 24-hour restaurant that embodies the flash, energy and hospitality considered trademarks of Greek culture—not to mention the food. Scour page after page of the delectable menu to find seafood platters, traditional Italian and Greek platters, and to-die-for cakes and pies that beckon patrons from their displays.
