Making Modernism “O’Keeffe, Preston, Cossington Smith: Making Modernism” showcases the iconic art of Georgia O’Keeffe, one of the most significant American painters of the twentieth century, alongside modernist masterpieces by the celebrated and pioneering Australian artists, Margaret Preston and Grace Cossington Smith. Born in the late nineteenth century, the three painters came of age during the 1910s and 1920s, decades of great social and cultural transition. While they were not connected by personal familiarity or direct corre-spondence, they were kindred spirits, rejecting the artistic conventions of the past and forging new ways of picturing the changing world. United by their love of nature, O’Keeffe, Preston and Cossington Smith developed subjects from their immediate surroundings into distinct interpretations of place. MODEL CITIZENS Australia’s national circus company, Circus Oz, returns to the Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC) with a brand new show, “Model Citizens”. Audiences will be taken on a visually and emotionally charged journey by the multi-talented Circus Oz ensemble, exploring what it really means to be a Model Citizen in our ‘lucky’ country today. Set in a beautiful yet chaotic model kit world, “Model Citizens” seamlessly blends the risk, beauty and rawness of acrobatic circus with pumping live music, stunning lighting, breath taking physical improbability and no shortage of absurdity. 12–15 April, Playhouse, QPAC, cnr Grey and Melbourne Streets, South Bank. 136 246. qpac.com.au

HOT T TICKE

Grease—The Arena Experience “Grease—The Arena Experience” brings everyone’s favourite rock and roll musical to life on stage like you’ve never seen it before. Featuring all the hit songs from the most popular movie musical of all time, “Grease” is the timelessly funny story of 1950s teen love, cliques, and peer pressure. Join your favourite Rydell High students, Danny and Sandy, the T-Birds and the Pink Ladies along with a cast of hilarious characters as they jive and bop their way to graduation. 7–9 April, Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre, South Bank. 132 849. ticketek.com.au

My Fair Lady

“My Fair Lady” is the Cinderella story about the cockney flower girl, Eliza Doolittle, and the appealingly arrogant phoneticist, Henry Higgins. It is an endearing tale that charms audiences with its warmth and vivid characters. Headlining the company is acclaimed theatre, film, and television actor Charles Edwards (“Downton Abbey”), as Henry Higgins and the young Australian star, Anna O’Byrne, as Eliza Doolittle. Joining them is an outstanding cast. Reg Livermore plays Alfred P. Doolittle. Robyn Nevin plays Mrs. Higgins and Mark Vincent plays Freddy. The role of Colonel Pickering is played by Tony Llewellyn-Jones and Deidre Rubenstein plays Mrs. Pearce. Until 30 April, Lyric Theatre, QPAC, cnr Grey and Melbourne Streets, South Bank. 136 246. qpac.com.au

WHAT’S ON BRISBANE

The 13-Storey Treehouse Andy Griffiths’ and Terry Denton’s best-selling and enthralling book “The 13-Storey Treehouse” has been turned into an even better play. Curtain up! Today’s the day. There’s just one problem. They forgot to write it! And where will they find flying cats, a mermaid, a sea monster, an invasion of monkeys, and a giant gorilla? Luckily the theatre has an extensive prop and costume collection and some very impressive stage technology. “The 13-Storey Treehouse” is brought to life with a seriously funny cast and magical moments of theatrical wizardry. 5–9 April, Playhouse, QPAC, cnr Grey and Melbourne Streets, South Bank. 136 246. qpac.com.au

Once in Royal David’s City Who are we, what are we doing here, and why is it so? Faced with the loss of a parent, do we rage against the universe, search for connection or hope for an epiphany? On the beaches of northern New South Wales, theatre director Will has planned to share a restful, halcyon Christmas with his recently-widowed mother. But then she falls ill. During a bed-side vigil, Will is forced to piece together the splintered shards of his own life, questioning his role as an artist, as a son, as a citizen of the world. 22 April–14 May, Playhouse, QPAC, cnr Grey and Melbourne Streets, South Bank. 136 246. qpac.com.au

CONSTELLATIONS Imagine that we all live in world that is part of a multiverse in which, at any given moment, several different outcomes can exist simultaneously. “Constellations” ingeniously puts this theory on stage. Lovers often say fate brought them together, and fate doesn’t get much credit after that. But in “Constellations” by British playwright Nick Payne, every moment Roland and Marianne share is at the mercy of the infinite and unknowable universe. Constellations has played to packed houses and rave reviews in New York and London. Queensland Theatre invigorates this international hit with an imaginative new pro-duction with Queensland-born and National Artistic Team member, Lucas Stibbard as Roland, and well-known Australian television star, Jessica Tovey as Marianne. Until 9 April, Bille Brown Studio, 78 Montague Road, South Brisbane. 3010 7600. queenslandtheatre.com.au Jessica Tovey and Lucas Stibbard in “Constellations”.

WALKING WONDERS

WALK THIS WAY Here’s five fabulous walks to check out while in Brisbane. By Kerry Heaney

GET TO KNOW BRISBANE like a local by walking its streets, rather than catching fleeting glimpses through a vehicle window. A long walk is a chance to move slowly through the suburbs, stop at the vistas, listen to bird chatter and appreciate the flower fragrance. Brisbanites make good use of their walking trails, so you’ll always have a friendly face to chat to and check your directions. Most are shared paths so watch out for cyclists and keep to the left. It’s also a good idea to start early, sunscreen up before you head out, take a hat and keep hydrated with a water bottle on hand. Here are five paths to explore.

ue ens land .

Riverwalk. Photo: Roshan Sukhla.

1. WALK ON WATER Brisbane’s Riverwalk reaches out over the water at New Farm for around 800 metres from the end of Merthyr Road to the Howard Smith Wharves. You can take a leisurely stroll and sit for a while under the shade on the pontoon. Start with breakfast and

coffee at Moray Café, then head along the river under the Story Bridge and take a right at Ivory Lane. Follow the path to Bowen Terrace and take the cliff top walk till it joins Moray Street. There are lots of Queenslander and Art Deco style buildings to admire, and you can finish back where you started at Moray Café for another refreshing cuppa. If you don’t need to end where you started, take the City Reach of the Boardwalk which wanders 2.4 kilometres along the river bank right down to the City Botanic Gardens.

2. SMELL THE ROSES New Farm Park is 15 hectares of flat parkland by the river in New Farm. It is always worth a visit but even more in winter to see the blooming rose display and in spring when the Jacaranda trees create a purple carpet. Add a Saturday farmers market and a children’s adventure playground into the mix, and you may not want to leave, but a 2.5-kilometre walk along the river bank to the Teneriffe Ferry Terminal will offer some delightful river vistas. Catch a ferry back to New Farm Park, and you’ll enjoy even more water views.

South Bank Secrets By Tiana Templeman

Photo: Tourism and Events Queensland.

IT IS EARLY evening at South Bank and things are hotting up. The sound of people having fun mingles with soft jazz from a nearby restaurant and the heady scent of frangipani fills the air. Elegant fashionistas share the streets with tourists wearing t-shirts and there is no cut-off age limit for enjoying a night out. South Bank has an excitement all its own and some of the best shopping,

drinking, dining and entertainment options in Brisbane. With charming markets, excellent restaurants, alfresco bars and cultural activities galore, there has never been a better time to visit. THINGS TO DO South Bank is well known for its swimming lagoon (Streets Beach) but there are plenty of alternative activities for those who prefer to stay dry.

Culture aficionados can also explore the more traditional Queensland Art Gallery or the Queensland Museum and Sciencentre which continues to evolve with the addition of high tech installations. The latter is a big hit with kids of all ages. Across the road at South Bank Parklands you can take to the sky on The Wheel of Brisbane, a giant observation wheel which takes you high above the city. If you would prefer to take to the water, River City Cruises offer a range of relaxing tours which include a hop-off option so you can explore further afield. Another popular attraction with a maritime theme can be found at the southern end of the Parklands. The Queensland Maritime Museum houses historical maritime artefacts, photographs and paintings in its collection, alongside

numerous vessels which you can explore, such as the World War II frigate HMAS Diamantina and the powerful steam tug Forceful. It is a hands-on museum run by passionate volunteers, many of whom are retired ship masters, marine engineers and ex-naval personnel. SHOPPING SECRETS South Bank is home to a number of eclectic creative markets. If you have an appetite for the unusual and like to browse, visit the Collective Markets, which take place on Fridays at the Stanley Street Plaza from 5pm to 9pm, Saturdays from 10am to 9pm and Sundays from 9am to 4pm. Here you can pick up handmade fashion, vintage collectibles, jewellery, homewares and furniture at affordable prices. Little Stanley Street plays host to the Young Designers Market on the first Sunday of every month from 10am to 4pm. Everything at this market is handmade by the stall holders. For many of these creative entrepreneurs, showing at the market is the first step towards the commercialisation of their designs so you will also be helping a talented up-and-comer get a head start in the industry. Chatting to the creators is one of the pleasures of shopping at this colourful market.

WHERE TO EAT South Bank has a dazzling selection of restaurants and cafés, many of which capitalise on Queensland’s love of outdoor dining. South Bank Surf Club overlooks the famous swimming lagoon and gives an inner-city twist to the traditional Aussie surf club. It is a great spot for a drink and a bite to eat on a sunny afternoon. Alongside the river there is River Quay, a collection of sleek dining options ranging from champagne breakfasts at River Quay Fish to rustic Italian share plates at Popolo and the steakhouse sophistication of Stokehouse Q. Fresh seafood, home-style favourites and an Indonesian influence can be found at The Jetty, while Francophiles will appreciate Aquitaine Brasserie, a charming alfresco diner offering a delicious taste of France with classic dishes such as Marseille bouillabaisse. Nearby Grey Street offers an equally impressive choice of dining options. The vibe here tends to be more lively, especially at Ole, a Spanish restaurant with a dedicated sangria bar. Share plates are a feature here making this a great spot to visit with colleagues or friends. Try The Spaghetti House Trattoria if you’re in the mood for traditional Italian

MARVELLOUS MT COOT-THA

By Kerry Heaney

AT 287 METRES above sea level, Mt Coot-tha might be little more than a large hill, but it’s the best place to see Brisbane, from the suburbs to the ocean. Reach Mt Coot-tha Lookout by driving from the inner city on Milton Road and the winding Sir Samuel Griffith Drive. From the viewing platform, you’ll see why people have been heading up the mountain to enjoy the panorama both day and night for more than 180 years. At the lookout, take in the view with a coffee or snack from Kuta Café or indulge with fine dining at the Summit Restaurant.

The Summit Restaurant building was redeveloped in the 1980s incorporating the second Federation-style kiosk built in 1918. Today, the Summit Restaurant is an award-winning venue with a menu that focuses on quality Queensland produce, and stunning vistas. Mt Coot-tha has many different picnic spots located along the road, but J.C. Slaughter Falls at the base of the mountain is one of the most popular. Along with plenty of barbecues and picnic tables, it has a burbling creek meandering through the middle. Mined for gold between 1890 and 1950, during the war years Mt Coot-tha was a

military base and explosives depot. You’ll find reminders of this history on the walking trails that criss-cross the slopes. The western side is popular with mountain bike riders while those walking tracks are a training ground for adventurers. At the base of the mountain is the Brisbane Botanic Gardens, 52 hectares of landscaped subtropical greenery, open every day from 8am to 5pm. Entry is free and there are also free guided walks Monday through Saturday at 11am and 1pm which leave from the Information Desk. A good place to relax with refreshments is the Botanical Café. Open daily from 9am to 4pm on weekdays and 8am to 5pm on weekends, it’s located near an entrance to the gardens and has a covered deck overlooking a picturesque lake. As you stroll along the winding garden paths, you’ll discover a Japanese Garden, Bonsai House, Fern House, areas of exotic rainforest, a lagoon and bamboo grove and dedicated activities for children. The Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium was named after the Governor of the New South Wales colony who arrived in 1821 and charted an unknown southern sky. The centre’s optical star projector creates a replica night sky, and regular shows are a feature. Mt Coot-tha is a 20-minute drive by car from Brisbane’s CBD and can also be accessed by bus.

DINING RIVERFRONT, BRISBANE

BRISBANE’S Riverfront Dining BRISBANE’S EAGLE STREET is a culinary hot spot with

its unrivalled view of the Story Bridge and Brisbane River and a selection of dining options to match. This wide stretch of water backing on to the tall cliffs of Kangaroo Point is glorious by day, but by night the whole area twinkles with lights dominated by the colourfully lit Story Bridge which changes its hue to suit the occasion. Looking for a quick coffee or just a light meal? There’s plenty of choice in Eagle Street Pier at 45 Eagle Street. Discover simple, honest food at casual eatery Jude Kitchen & Bar, fast and healthy flamegrilled burgers from Grill’d or soft and hard tacos, burritos and nachos at Mexican taqueria Guzman Y Gomez. For a post-work drink with friends or a night out on the town, try the stylish yet intimate cocktail bar

Mr & Mrs G Riverbar. Named after its owners, veteran restaurateurs Andy and Marcia Georges, it is right on the river bank and adjacent to the couple’s much loved Il Centro Restaurant, home of the legendary Sand Crab lasagne. Spreading the fun of Bavarian bier and culture around the globe, the Bavarian Bier Café’s wide balcony on the second level of Eagle Street Pier is a great spot for business lunches, after work drinks or a relaxing dinner. There’s an impressive range of imported beers at the Bavarian Bier Café, which also offers a good selection of schnapps and wine. They are famous for their schnitzel but also have lighter options. Pony has an uncomplicated approach to modern Australian food with a flavour-driven menu and an array of shared plates and wood-fired dishes.

DINING RIVERFRONT, BRISBANE

Friday’s.

Saké Restaurant & Bar serves up contemporary Japanese cuisine with a distinct local flavour and has an exclusive range of premium sakés imported directly from Japan. Try the Otsumami menu, which features small bites that are perfectly matched with delicious saké and shochu cocktails. A little further down the river at 71 Eagle Street, Riparian Plaza’s open promenade and plaza area features

some of Brisbane City’s most popular waterside dining experiences, including Kingsleys Steak and Crabhouse, Riverbar & Kitchen and modern Asian delicacies at Madame Wu. The Riverside Quarter at 123 Eagle Street is home to Jellyfish, Friday’s, Baba Ganouj, Pig ’N’ Whistle, Groove Train, Blackbird Bar & Grill and Navala Churrascaria. Friday’s on Eagle Street facing the river, boasts a large outdoor river front

terrace fronting a huge island bar and is a popular spot late in the evening until the early morning. The Waterline Restaurant has an extensive wine list and offers modern Australian cuisine. The Terrace Grill is open for lunch and dinner, with plump juicy char grilled steaks, seafood and innovative modern Australian cuisine. Closer to the Story Bridge, Customs House, with its grand colonnades, portico, and copper-sheathed dome, is a fine example of Victorian Free Classical style architecture. It is open for both lunch and dinner, with Customs House Restaurant’s expansive river views. They are especially appropriate for a leisurely Sunday breakfast available on the riverside terrace from 9am. Further afield in Toowong, the Regatta Hotel is known as the Grand Lady of the Brisbane River. Established in 1874, it has survived fire and flood and now boasts the Boatshed Restaurant, the Street Café, the Main Bar and the Courtyard. Executive chef Daniel Fleming has designed menus, which provide an innovative, broad range of dishes using fresh, seasonal produce. The choices are many but the river links them all, its banks winding through the city creating vistas to delight diners both night and day.

PONY Standing proud on the lively riverfront, Pony Dining offers modern Australian cuisine with premier waterfront dining, leading event solutions, an iconic bar and a spacious terrace, boasting unrivalled views of the Story Bridge. A lasting impression starts with the fragrance of wood smoke and spirited chefs around a custom made Argentinean wood-fire grill serving an honest, uncomplicated and flavour driven menu. The seafood and meat are sourced from reputable suppliers within Australia. The quality cuts of meat are prepared over the wood-fired grill. Pony Dining offers seafood and pasta dishes that are thoughtfully created with seasonality in mind. The menu also features dishes designed for sharing as well as innovative vegetarian options. LES CLEFS D’OR BRISBANE

Sand tobogganing, Moreton Island. Photo: Tourism and Events Queensland.

LES CLEFS D’OR

By Jaime Lachs

CHIEF CONCIERGE, RYDGES SOUTH BANK

IN EARLY MARCH this year, Concierge

Services in association with Tangalooma Island Resort arranged for a hotel concierge familiarisation experience on Moreton Island. The day started with a boat trip from the Brisbane base at the Holt Street Wharf to Moreton Island which is approximately 75 minutes across Moreton Bay. Once on the island we were greeted by the customer service team and they proceeded to show us the islands accommodation and importantly, the dining and bar facilities. One of the highlights of the day was the desert safari to an area known as the Tangalooma desert. At the desert we were greeted by a very large steep sand hill, and many of us imagined we were athletes training on the sand dunes. We climbed the hill holding a toboggan and once we reached the summit, we slid very quickly down to the base. Make a note to listen to the guides carefully, as this may save you from cleaning sand from all over your face and in your clothes, as some of us learnt the hard way. We eventually cleaned the sand off by swimming in the amazingly clear ocean water, where we swam around a variety of small fish.

There is also the option of swimming at the wrecks, which is a series of scuttled boats that over time have formed a natural reef and is now a diver’s paradise. After dinner in the Asian themed restaurant, where we dined like it was the last supper, we ventured to the boat wharf to participate in one of the major draw cards to the island, which is feeding the dolphins. This is a professionally organised and National Parks monitored event. The dolphins are wild and there is no guarantee to how many will come to shore purely for that reason. The whole experience is definitely worth considering as Moreton Island is a small sample of the many beautiful islands which Queensland is blessed with, and it is within sight of Brisbane city.

■ As always if you would like to arrange a trip to Moreton or any other similar activities, please consult your friendly hotel concierge.
