FEBRUARY EVENTS BY CELIA FEIL

The Australian Ballet: The Sleeping Beauty The Australian Ballet’s dazzling production of “The Sleeping Beauty” comes to Brisbane for the first time this month. David McAllister’s interpretation remains faithful to the spirit of the original choreography of 19th century master Marius Petipa. Audiences will be delighted by the famously challenging balances of Princess Aurora’s Rose Adage, her romantic Wedding Grand Pas de deux with the Prince, and the lively variations of the couple’s storybook friends. Accompanied by Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s enchanting score and dressed in exquisite costumes by internationally renowned designer Gabriela Tylesova, a cast of royals and courtiers, fairies and wood nymphs, bluebirds and storybook characters bring new life to a classic story. 24 February–4 March, Lyric Theatre, QPAC, cnr Grey and Melbourne Streets, South Bank. 136 246. qpac.com.au

MATILDA THE MUSICAL “Matilda The Musical” is the multi award-winning musical from the Royal Shakespeare Company, inspired by the genius of Roald Dahl. With original songs by Tim Minchin, “Matilda The Musical” is the story of an extraordinary girl who, armed with a vivid imagination and a sharp mind, dares to take a stand and change her own destiny. Winner of over 70 major international awards, including 15 for Best Musical, “Matilda” has become the most successful and acclaimed musical in Australian show business history. Photo: James Morgan.

Nigel Kennedy Internationally renowned classical, jazz, and rock violinist Nigel Kennedy will turn the clock back to perform “Vivaldi: The New Four Seasons + Dedications”. Some 26 years after releasing his breakthrough recording of Vivaldi’s “The New Four Seasons”, which sold over three million copies (the best-selling classical record ever), Nigel Kennedy has the Italian composer in his sights again. Presenting an exciting new version of his iconic masterpiece, Nigel Kennedy adds a typical and traditional twist, as he performs an acoustic version of his ground breaking Four Seasons. With “The New Four Seasons”, Kennedy will take audiences on a journey through the seasons with extraordinary flair, delivering new interpretations of the music whilst staying true to the essence of Vivaldi’s “Four Seasons”. 2 February, Concert Hall, QPAC, cnr Grey and Melbourne Streets, South Bank. 136 246. qpac.com.au

EXPLOSIONS IN THE SKY Texan post-rock behemoths Explosions in the Sky make their way to QPAC’s Concert Hall for one night only as part of their Australian tour. Renowned for their scathingly intense live shows, the quartet have sold out Radio City Music Hall, created the soundtrack for “Friday Night Lights” and a number of other motion pictures and TV shows, and most recently performed at Glastonbury Festival. Explosions in the Sky have garnered popularity beyond the post-rock scene for their elaborately developed guitar work, narratively styled instrumentals and what they refer to as “cathartic mini-symphonies” during their enthusiastic and emotional live shows.

Single Asian Female

La Boite Theatre Company’s “Single Asian Female” is an incisive new comedy skewering race and gender in contemporary Australia from Brisbanebased award-winning writer Michelle Law. Step into the after-hours of a suburban Chinese restaurant and meet a family of whip smart women who are definitely talking about you in their native tongue. Set on the Sunshine Coast, this hilarious play answers what it means to be an Asian woman living in Australia. “Single Asian Female” is about women navigating distinctly female relationships; sisters at odds with each other, frenemies undermining each other, and a mother trying to overcome generational and cultural gaps to connect with her daughters. 11 February–4 March, La Boite at the Roundhouse Theatre, The Works, Level 5, 6–8 Musk Avenue, Kelvin Grove Village. 3007 8600. laboite.com.au

“Lucent” draws together works from the Aboriginal and Pacific collections, illuminating connections and differences between the cultures. Evocations of light and its absence are explored through works ranging from installations of great majesty to intimate adornments for the body. Multiple feathered “Banumbirr (Morning star)” poles associated with creation stories engage with a 22-metre black “Ngatu Ta Uli (barkcloth)” used within mourning rituals, as do decorative and ceremonial pearlshell pendants from both cultures and textiles.

HERE ARE NINE

breathtaking views to seek out to enjoy some of the many faces of Brisbane from dawn to dusk and beyond.

1

CLIFF EDGE, KANGAROO POINT Favoured for picnics, abseiling and watching city fireworks, the Kangaroo Point Cliffs were created by convicts mining rock for buildings from the 1820s. The park by the Brisbane River bank below the cliff has a walking path and plenty of spots to relax and take in the scenery. From the clifftop the views stretch across the city and a beautiful bend in the river. Watch the City Cats as they glide up and down the river’s reaches or enjoy the twinkling city lights at night.

2

MOUNTAIN TOP, MT COOT-THA The twisting road to the top of Brisbane’s highest peak, Mt Coot-tha, will take you 287 metres above sea level. This popular vantage point over the city has a café for coffee,

cake and ice cream, and a restaurant where you can dine for lunch or dinner and take in the views at leisure. There’s also several walking tracks and trails on the mountain where you will really earn your rest at the top. The mountain is home to Brisbane’s television stations and their studio, and was also home to anti-aircraft guns and searchlights during World War II.

3

BRIDGE CLIMB, KANGAROO POINT Opened in 1940, the Story Bridge is a steel, cantilever bridge crossing the Brisbane River connecting Fortitude Valley to Kangaroo Point. Climbing with Story Bridge Adventure Climb to the top of the 72-metre-tall bridge offers a view like no other, and is a favourite spot for people to ‘pop the question’ and propose. One of only three bridge climbs in the world, it’s also popular for abseiling.

4

WHAT GOES UP, SOUTH BANK See Brisbane’s South Bank and city skyline from a new perspective in a Wheel of Brisbane gondola. Sweeping up and round the promenade in the Cultural Forecourt at South Bank, the air-conditioned capsules offer views from 60 metres above ground.

5

GO GLIDING, TAMBORINE MOUNTAIN About an hour’s drive from Brisbane, subtropical Tamborine Mountain is a plateau filled with red dirt, rainforest and rare birds. Its cooler clime makes it a popular day trip destination when the weather is hot and there are many picnic spots and walking trails to explore. Head to the Western Escarpment to watch hang gliders and para gliders taking off!

6

WHALES WAY, NORTH STRADBROKE ISLAND It’s beautiful anytime of the year, but from June to November at Point Lookout on North Stradbroke Island, all you need is a pair of binoculars to watch the whales swimming past in the ocean. Thousands of whales swim past Australia’s East Coast during these months creating a moving feast for land-based whale watching. Don’t have binoculars? Just hire them on the island.

7

TAKE THE HIGH ROAD, SCENIC RIM From Carr’s Lookout near Killarney, you can see Mount Superbus, Mount Wilson and Mount Barney and the head waters of the Condamine River. Just a little further along the road is Spring Creek Mountain Café where the view is just as good and the delicious Southern Downs produce will have

you eating much more than you planned. Take one of owner Bev Rusky’s pies home with you. With that pie in mind, it’s the quickest two-hour car journey you’ll ever make.

8

DAM IT, BRISBANE VALLEY Just an hour’s drive from Brisbane’s CBD, lies the peace and tranquillity of Lake Wivenhoe. A major water supply for the area, it’s also much-loved by campers and kayakers. The day picnic areas are always popular but if you want to go light, pop into Cormorant Café at Cormorant Bay for a breakfast or lunch overlooking the lake.

9

ROOF TOP, FORTITUDE VALLEY It’s not the highest, or the biggest but this bar sure packs a punch when it comes to sunset views of Brisbane’s city skyline. Positioned on floor 11, Eleven Rooftop Bar at 757 Ann Street offers much to like with 270-degree views over the central city hub and Fortitude Valley. There’s bar snacks or restaurant meals while you watch the sunset or while the night away. This place comes with a dress code, so don’t forget to leave your high vis vest at home and glam up for the night. It’s a perfect place to escape the frenzy of Fortitude Valley’s nightclubs for a while as well.

South Bank Secrets By Tiana Templeman

South Bank pool. Photo: Tourism and Events Queensland.

IT IS EARLY evening at South Bank and things are hotting up. The sound of people having fun mingles with soft jazz from a nearby restaurant and the heady scent of frangipani fills the air. Elegant fashionistas share the streets with tourists wearing t-shirts and there is no cut-off age limit for enjoying a night out. South Bank has an excitement all its own and some of the best shopping, drinking, dining and entertainment options in Brisbane. With charming markets, excellent restaurants, alfresco bars and cultural activities galore, there has never been a better time to visit.

THINGS TO DO South Bank is well known for its swimming lagoon (Streets Beach) but there are plenty of alternative activities for those who prefer to stay dry. The Gallery of Modern Art, or GOMA as it is affectionately known, has an international reputation for hosting exhibitions that are the envy of other galleries with the likes of Picasso, Matisse and Warhol drawing record crowds. Culture aficionados can also explore the more traditional Queensland Art Gallery or the Queensland Museum and Sciencentre which continues to evolve

Brisbane Lookout views, Mt Cooth-tha.

MARVELLOUS MT COOT-THA

By Kerry Heaney

AT 287 METRES above sea level,

Mt Coot-tha might be little more than a large hill, but it’s the best place to see Brisbane, from the suburbs to the ocean. Reach Mt Coot-tha Lookout by driving from the inner city on Milton Road and the winding Sir Samuel Griffith Drive. From the viewing platform, you’ll see why people have been heading up the mountain to enjoy the panorama both day and night for more than 180 years. At the lookout, take in the view with a coffee or snack from Kuta Café or indulge with fine dining at the Summit Restaurant.

The Summit Restaurant building was redeveloped in the 1980s incorporating the second Federation-style kiosk built in 1918. Today, the Summit Restaurant is an award-winning venue with a menu that focuses on quality Queensland produce, and stunning vistas. Mt Coot-tha has many different picnic spots located along the road, but J.C. Slaughter Falls at the base of the mountain is one of the most popular. Along with plenty of barbecues and picnic tables, it has a burbling creek meandering through the middle. Mined for gold between 1890 and 1950, during the war years Mt Coot-tha was a

military base and explosives depot. You’ll find reminders of this history on the walking trails that criss-cross the slopes. The western side is popular with mountain bike riders while those walking tracks are a training ground for adventurers. At the base of the mountain is the Brisbane Botanic Gardens, 52 hectares of landscaped subtropical greenery, open every day from 8am to 5pm. Entry is free and there are also free guided walks Monday through Saturday at 11am and 1pm which leave from the Information Desk. A good place to relax with refreshments is the Botanical Café. Open daily from 9am to 4pm on weekdays and 8am to 5pm on weekends, it’s located near an entrance to the gardens and has a covered deck overlooking a picturesque lake. As you stroll along the winding garden paths, you’ll discover a Japanese Garden, Bonsai House, Fern House, areas of exotic rainforest, a lagoon and bamboo grove and dedicated activities for children. The Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium was named after the Governor of the New South Wales colony who arrived in 1821 and charted an unknown southern sky. The centre’s optical star projector creates a replica night sky, and regular shows are a feature. Mt Coot-tha is a 20-minute drive by car from Brisbane’s CBD and can also be accessed by bus.

hot spot with its unrivalled view of the Story Bridge and Brisbane River and a selection of dining options to match. This wide stretch of water backing on to the tall cliffs of Kangaroo Point is glorious by day, but by night the whole area twinkles with lights dominated by the colourfully lit Story Bridge which changes its hue to suit the occasion. Looking for a quick coffee or just a light meal? There’s plenty of choice in Eagle Street Pier at 45 Eagle Street. Discover simple, honest food at casual eatery Jude Kitchen & Bar, fast and healthy flamegrilled burgers from Grill’d or soft and hard tacos, burritos and nachos at Mexican taqueria Guzman Y Gomez. For a post-work drink with friends or a night out on the town, try the stylish yet intimate cocktail bar Mr & Mrs G Riverbar. Named after its owners, veteran restaurateurs Andy and Marcia Georges, it is right on the river bank and adjacent to the couple’s much loved Il Centro Restaurant, home of the legendary Sand Crab lasagne. Spreading the fun of Bavarian bier and culture around the globe, the Bavarian Bier Café’s wide balcony on the second level of Eagle Street Pier is a great spot for business lunches, after work drinks or a relaxing dinner. There’s an impressive range of imported beers at the Bavarian Bier Café, which also offers a good selection of schnapps and wine. They are famous for their schnitzel but also have lighter options. Pony has an uncomplicated approach to modern Australian food with a flavour-driven menu and an array of shared plates and wood-fired dishes. Saké Restaurant & Bar serves up contemporary Japanese cuisine with a distinct local flavour and has an exclusive range of premium sakés imported directly from Japan. Try the Otsumami menu,

which features small bites that are perfectly matched with delicious saké and shochu cocktails. A little further down the river at 71 Eagle Street, Riparian Plaza’s open promenade and plaza area features some of Brisbane City’s most popular waterside dining experiences, including Kingsleys Steak and Crabhouse, Riverbar & Kitchen and modern Asian delicacies at Madame Wu. The Riverside Quarter at 123 Eagle Street is home to Jellyfish, Friday’s, Baba Ganouj, Pig ’N’ Whistle, Groove Train, Blackbird Bar & Grill and Navala Churrascaria. Friday’s on Eagle Street facing the river, boasts a large outdoor river front terrace fronting a huge island bar and is a popular spot late in the evening until the early morning. The Waterline Restaurant has an extensive wine list and offers modern Australian cuisine. The Terrace Grill is open for lunch and dinner, with plump juicy char grilled steaks, seafood and innovative modern Australian cuisine. Closer to the Story Bridge, Customs House, with its grand colonnades, portico, and copper-sheathed dome, is a fine example of Victorian Free Classical

style architecture. It is open for both lunch and dinner, with Customs House Restaurant’s expansive river views. They are especially appropriate for a leisurely Sunday breakfast available on the riverside terrace from 9am. Further afield in Toowong, the Regatta Hotel is known as the Grand Lady of the Brisbane River. Established in 1874, it has survived fire and flood and

now boasts the Boatshed Restaurant, the Street Café, the Main Bar and the Courtyard. Executive chef Daniel Fleming has designed menus, which provide an innovative, broad range of dishes using fresh, seasonal produce. The choices are many but the river links them all, its banks winding through the city creating vistas to delight diners both night and day.

PONY Standing proud on the lively riverfront, Pony Dining offers modern Australian cuisine with premier waterfront dining, leading event solutions, an iconic bar and a spacious terrace, boasting unrivalled views of the Story Bridge. A lasting impression starts with the fragrance of wood smoke and spirited chefs around a custom made Argentinean wood-fire grill serving an honest, uncomplicated and flavour driven menu. The seafood and meat are sourced from reputable suppliers within Australia. The quality cuts of meat are prepared over the wood-fired grill. Pony Dining offers seafood and pasta dishes that are thoughtfully created with seasonality in mind. The menu also features dishes designed for sharing as well as innovative vegetarian options. LES CLEFS D’OR

By Graham Hodgson STATE DIRECTOR QUEENSLAND AND NORTHERN TERRITORY; CHIEF CONCIERGE, EMPORIUM BRISBANE

LES CLEFS D’OR INTERNATIONAL President: COLIN TOOMEY,

STAYING COOL IN SUMMER February is another hot month in Brisbane and if it is anything like what we experienced in January, it is sure to be another scorcher. Having made good use of your hotel facilities I would encourage you to venture out and explore one of the many public pools available at various locations across Brisbane. Arguably the most popular of these is South Bank. Not only is it home to our premier galleries and museums but it is where you will find Streets Beach—a man-made lagoon surrounded by white, sandy beaches and sub-tropical plants. Newmarket Pool, a short 10-minute drive from the CBD, is another excellent swimming facility particularly for those of you with young children. Options here include a children’s pool with slides and water features, a 25-metre covered heated pool and a shade cloth covered toddlers wading pool. If you’ve got a car I would recommend driving 40 minutes north to

the seaside town of Redcliffe—birthplace of The Bee Gees and home to the Redcliffe Lagoon. Located on Redcliffe’s foreshore with views across Moreton Bay and beyond. Make a day of it and enjoy fish and chips by the sea—perfect! Don’t forget to pack a hat, sunscreen and towel. Most hotels will have designated pool or beach towels available. If you are ever in doubt ask your concierge. LES CLEFS D’OR Les Clefs d’Or Queensland’s first meeting for the year will be held at the Stamford Plaza Brisbane in the first week of February. It will give members an opportunity to discuss the previous year as well as activities and events on the horizon for 2017. Most notably will be the combined Les Clefs d’Or National AGM, Concierge Hospitality Ball and Meet The Region tourism expo scheduled to take place in July. Watch this space!
