CELEBRATING 80 YEARS OF TRAVEL
Essential Charlotte Welcome to Queen City! If you only have limited time to sightsee but want a dose of culture, turn your attention to this sight, hand picked and guaranteed to intrigue in less than two hours. 80 MINUTES IN:
Discovery Place Nature Junior botanists can get their hands dirty at this small yet supremely interesting institution, formerly known as Charlotte Nature Museum. A favorite attraction—but really, they’re all favorites—is the Butterfly Pavilion where free-flying butterflies grow, frolic and taste flower nectar. At the Creature Cavern, kiddos get close to critters like turtles, owls and, even, skunks. The outdoor Paw Paw Nature Trail wends through a 100-year-old forest. 1658 Sterling Road, 704.372.6261. ‘Tis The Season
‘It’s the most wonderful time of the year,’ sings Andy Williams, and we have to agree. From harvest days and a Thanksgiving parade to a full calendar of Christmas festivities, here’s what to do in Charlotte.
HARVEST DAY Step inside the Schiele Museum of Natural History on Nov. 19 and find yourself caught in the harvest on the Backcountry Farm. Cooks prepare traditional Thanksgiving Day dishes while craftspeople and farm folk demonstrate early American handiwork. 1500 East Garrison Blvd., Gastonia, 704.866.6900 THE POLAR EXPRESS TRAIN RIDE Relive the most fascinating moments from the eponymous movie when you hop aboard this special event at North Carolina Transportation Museum. Salisbury Ave., Spencer, 704.636.2889 HOLIDAYS AT THE GARDEN Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden is beauty in every season, but as the holidays approach it transforms into a magical world. Get in
the spirit with a hot chocolate in hand as you relax on a horse-drawn carriage ride, or stop and visit Santa. Nov. 20Jan. 3. 6500 South New Hope Road, Belmont, 704.825.4490 NOVANT HEALTH THANKSGIVING DAY PARADE For close on 70 years, Queen City has been celebrating T-Day at this entertaining parade. What began as a small, local event is now jampacked with regional marching bands, gigantic balloons, extravagant floats and excellent performances. Nov. 24, 9:30am. Tryon, Stonewall and Ninth streets. WEIHNACHS MARKT CHRISTMAS MARKET Check out Olde Mecklenburg Brewery’s German-inspired open-air Christmas market, where local gifts and baked goods are bought and sold. CHARLOTTE SYMPHONY’S MAGIC OF CHRISTMAS On Dec. 4 and 6-7, conductor Albert-George Schram leads the Symphony, the Oratorio Singers and the Charlotte Children’s Choir in this seasonal tradition at Belk Theater. Sing-alongs and exciting surprises complete the affair. 130 N. Tryon St., 704.372.1000 CHRISTMAS TOWN USA Glowing Christmas lights paint every last inch of McAdenville, making it the next best thing to the North Pole. Not only is the small town illuminated every night in December, but it also hosts other fun and festive activities. 100 Main St., McAdenville. —J.R.
FRESH-AIR FUN With its mild climate, Charlotte is ideal for year-round outdoor activities. Here are some not to be missed. Freedom Park After World War II, the Mecklenburg County Lions Club wanted to build a park to honor veterans. Today, Freedom Park is nestled between Charlotte’s Dilworth and Myers Park neighborhoods on 98 acres with a 7-acre man-made lake featured prominently in the center. Latta Plantation Nature Preserve Mecklenburg County’s largest nature preserve weighs in at 1,351 acres. In addition to walking trails, opportunities to kayak and canoe, fishing and picnic spots, are the Historic Latta Plantation (dating to the early 1800s) and the Carolina Raptor Center featuring live eagles, falcons and owls. Historic Segway Tours The Markets, Museums & Parks Segway Tour is a great way to learn about Charlotte’s past and present, taking guests to featured uptown stops including historic 4th Ward with its Victorian houses, Levine Cultural Center, the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art, and other historic and current landmarks. —E.M. Charlotte Your Way UNIQUE TRAVEL RECOMMENDATIONS, FIT TO MATCH YOUR PERSONAL STYLE. FIND THE CITY CURATED FOR YOU AT WHERETRAVELER.COM/CHARLOTTE.
Foodie
LGBTQ
Art Lover
Chef-owner Joe Kindred was nominated for Best Chef Southeast in the 2016 James Beard Awards. While he didn’t win (this time), diners who dig into contemporary Southern small plates at his year-old Kindred (1) win every time. Feast Food Tours’ (2) different tour options let foodies explore many neighborhoods. A favorite is the “Soul of the South Uptown” that delves into local cuisine and culture. And, open nearly every day year-round Charlotte Regional Farmers Market (3) offers locally produced jams, goat’s milk soap, and the like, as souvenirs.
Gay or not, if you want to get down on the dance floor to some highenergy beats, The Scorpio (1), Queen City’s oldest dance club, is where to do it. Plus, drink specials, like $1.50 longneck beers, are easy on the wallet. A weekend evening at The Nickel Bar (2) requires sexy dress and a two-mile jaunt from Uptown to the historic neighborhood of Smallwood. In the performing arts world, favorite local group Theatre Charlotte (3), is producing its 89th season. Plays include madcap comedy “You Can’t Take It With You” and Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol.”
On the first Friday of the month, grab a light meal at one of the restaurants within Atherton Market before the South End Gallery Crawl (1); then walk the Rail Trail down to Park Ave, the center of activity. Charlotte’s diverse NoDa (2) neighborhood is also its arts district, home to North Carolina Academy of Art, tattoo boutiques, fine art consultants and other “arts” business. And, the Harvey B. Gantt Center (3) bursts with art and culture, but the building itself is also a work of art, featuring patterns from West Africa and others inspired by Underground Railroad-era quilts.
