Straight to the Finish It’s Bank of America 500 season, and while Charlotte’s urban distrct is amazing, we know you’ll be heading to Cabarrus County. Tie in race weekend (or anytime) with a visit to a top race shop. 80 MINUTES IN:
Roush Fenway Racing and take a ride to Concord, North Carolina, for a visit to the “winningest team on the track” (NASCAR’s own description). Soak up the stories of driver Jack Roush, see the team’s legendary cars up close and relive glory moments in the museum’s 100-seat theater. Roush Fenway has two shops (the Sprint Cup shop has a viewing area) plus the museum and gift shop, so you can easily make this a full-throttle pilgrimage. Miles of Style in the Queen City
Charlotte’s got style. The city’s melting pot of culture, music, art and dance all celebrate a city of flavor, individual heritage and history. To find style throughout the city’s neighborhoods, we asked Kristen Shaeffer, Charlotte native and the force behind the blog Every Chic Way (everychicway.com), to “design” her ultimate roadmap for exploring the Queen City—from fashionable restaurants to bars with astounding city views and tucked-away boutiques. Her guide oozes with all that we love about Charlotte.
cording to Shaeffer. Offerings like the jalapeno egg white brioche and shrimp raft line the breakfast and brunch menu alongside scratch-made cocktails. COTSWOLD MARKETPLACE With a collection of vendors hailing from all over the Charlotte area, “you could spend hours in this one store,” said Shaeffer. Local boutiques and artists make up the backbone of the store. THE BALLANTYNE HOTEL AND SPA This South Charlotte classic (left) is always a chic stay. Pamper yourself with a session at the hotel spa before or after a dip in the indoor pool. Weekday (M-Th only) spa guests can also sunbathe by the outdoor pool for added relaxation.
BEDSIDE MANOR Best known for home décor and linens, Schaeffer points to Beside Manor (below) for its one-of-akind steals. Designers like Alixx, Cando and SDH are just a few of the brands on hand at this homegoods boutique.
SHAIN GALLERY This Selwyn Avenue gallery hosts a mix of local and regionally recognized artists. Mixed mediums, photography and other art forms pepper the gallery year-round, and it’s always stylish.
For more style picks: wheretraveler.com
CAPITOL The splurge-worthy gem in Charlotte’s fashionable crown, Capitol (left) attracts mavens to gander at the special-occasion dresses by renowned fashion houses like Oscar de la Renta. BLACKLION Set up as individual stalls, more than 177 merchants sell gifts, home décor and furniture through the store. “You can find pieces like a quirky lamp and in the next booth you might find something really traditional,” said Shaeffer of this Pineville marketplace.
RURU’S TACOS + TEQUILA A festive patio, packed bar and inventive menu make this restaurant a must-visit for Shaeffer. Spot movie titles and lines as taco names on the menu. LITTLESPOON This local café is a hotspot for weekend brunch, ac-

Charlotte Your Way UNIQUE TRAVEL RECOMMENDATIONS, FIT TO MATCH YOUR PERSONAL STYLE. FIND THE CITY CURATED FOR YOU AT WHERETRAVELER.COM/CHARLOTTE.

History Buffs
At the University of North Carolina, a $2 donation grants access to see dozens of plants through the four sections of the (1) UNC Botanical Gardens. If a guided tour is in your budget, pay $5 for a tour through the McMillan Greenhouse. Explore the (2) Charlotte Open-Air Market for local goods and outstanding people watching. Find tents and stalls lining the market. (3) Price’s Chicken Coop, a cash-only Charlotte institution, offers affordable fried chicken dinners. The lines are long, but it’s worth the wait. Eat at the curb out front for the full experience.
After a long afternoon exploring Uptown museums and cultural centers, find the (1) Romare Bearden Park—named after the famous, local artist—for a relaxing moment facing the cityscape. The five-acre park hosts an annual concert series and events. For hungry art enthusiasts, (2) Halycon serves up dishes that are almost too pretty to eat. Venture to the (3) McColl Center for some of the most modern art in Charlotte. This repurposed church—complete with soaring ceilings and large stained-glass windows—hosts exhibits, art events and film screenings.
Visit (1) Rural Hill for a scenic look at North Carolina history. This 265-acre estate was founded in 1759 by John Davidson, a signer of the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence. Reenactments like the Loch Norman Highland Games celebrate Davidson’s Scottish lineage. The (2) Hezekiah Alexander House (“The Rock House”) is a two-story home built in 1774. Tours show the preserved rooms and grounds. Get a taste of gold rush fever at (3) Wells Fargo History Museum. Sit in a Concord stagecoach or explore a full-scale model bank branch from 1889.
