The Essential Dallas-Fort Worth Where magazine celebrates 80 years of travel this year, and we’re commemorating it with 80-minute itineraries to the most-loved locales in DFW. In this music and artsthemed issue, we’re highlighting the renowned Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth. 80 MINUTES IN: Located in Fort Worth's Cultural District, The Modern is a feast for the eyes, both architecturally and aesthetically speaking. The picturesque, Tadao Ando-designed building is as much a work of art as the post-World War II masterpieces inside of it, which range from paintings and sculptures to digital installations. Opening April 17, The Modern’s “Frank Stella: A Retrospective” exhibition will easily consume one’s spare 80 minutes. However, even a
The Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth brisk tour of the permanent collection is enough to offer inspiration from the world’s foremost contemporary artists, including Pablo Picasso, Andy Warhol, Georg Baselitz and more. For visitors in town on Tuesday evenings, the museum’s free lecture series offers insights from artists, critics and historians; guests can also enjoy the presentation from Café Modern via live broadcast, along with gourmet small bites and cocktails. www.themodern.org

HOT DATES DATES THROUGH MARCH 20: ‘Variable Dimensions’
The first floor of the Crow Collection of Asian Art is populated with oddly shaped sculptures, intricate drawings, peculiar knick-knacks and patterned rugs and cushions. A bulletin board collage of ink drawings and newspaper clippings offers a glimpse into the inspiration and perspective of "Variable Dimensions" artist Alexander Gorlizki. In the unique exhibition, Gorlizki infuses his playful point-of-view onto a variety of Eastern-influenced media. Blending elements of sacred geometry, biomorphic symbolism and themes commonly found in the Islamic arts, "Variable Dimensions" demonstrates that fine art doesn't have to be serious. Best of all, admission to the Crow Collection is always free—and its permanent collection of Asian art alone is worth the trip to the Arts District. 2010 Flora St., 214.979.6430, www.crowcollection.org

MUSIC SCENE
For the Record
Listen up, vinyl junkies and old-school audiophiles: Like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re gonna get at one of these vinyl retailers, from limited-edition pressings to rare and out-of-print LPs. On April 16, better known to turntable enthusiasts as Record Store Day, many participating stores serve as the site of new and/or limited vinyl releases, not to mention music-filled parties and events. Check out a few of our favorite places for purchasing vinyl and celebrating its humble holiday. With a bit of patience—and good luck—odds are you’ll find the perfect album(s) to add to your collection, even if you have to dig a little bit. But hey, isn’t that part of the fun? BILL’S RECORDS Head just south of downtown Dallas and say hi to Bill, whose collection of mostly used records is barely alphabetized but one of DFW’s largest. New selections are minimal and often reflect Bill’s own musical tastes, but he’ll happily order any special requests and has an extensive eBay shop if you can’t find the elusive record you’re looking for. 1317 S. Dallas/Fort Worth Your Way
Family Travelers
First-Time Visitors
Outdoor Enthusiasts
For kid-friendly fun with an educational twist, visit the Perot Museum of Nature & Science (1), located right in the heart of Dallas. Filled with interactive demonstrations, like an earthquake simulator and a sports exhibit in which visitors can race against the world’s fastest animals and pro athletes, the Perot is nothing short of awe-inspiring. Animal lovers will also delight in the Texas-sized Fort Worth Zoo (2), where little ones can get an up-close look at giraffes, primates, exotic birds and other colorful species from around the world. Live renaissance entertainment (and a full bar for adults) awaits royal audiences at Medieval Times Dinner & Tournament (3), where spectators can enjoy a jousting competition and a four-course meal served the medieval way (that is, without silverware.)
Of all its landmarks, Dallas’ Dealey Plaza (1) —where President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in 1963—is perhaps the most recognizable. Downtown's grassy knoll and JFK Memorial are rarely seen without visitors, as is the case at The Sixth Floor Museum, which explores the assassination through archived images, eyewitness interviews and artifacts. A concert, game or guided tour at AT&T Stadium (2) rounds out the essential DFW itinerary, as the venue demonstrates why everything is bigger in Texas. No trip to “Cowtown” is complete without a visit to the Fort Worth Stockyards (3), home of rodeos, steakhouses, Western retailers and a daily cattle drive. Enjoy a trip back in time to the Wild West and pick up a pair of handmade boots or a branding iron as a souvenir.
Indulge in some all-natural fun at White Rock Lake (1), a scenic area bordered by a 9.3-mile hike and bike trail. Have a picnic, take furry friends to the dog park or visit the Bath House Cultural Center’s museum and art gallery. For a safari-style excursion, head to Fossil Rim Wildlife Center (2). Just an hour from DFW, this animal sanctuary and “drive-in” zoo is home to thousands of roaming native and exotic animals, including wolves, bison and the endangered southern white rhino. Feed giraffes and zebras from the palm of your hand or spend the night in a tent or cabin. Outdoor adventures in Fort Worth are easily accessible from downtown. Rent kayaks, canoes or stand-up paddleboards (SUPs) at Panther Island Pavilion (3) on the Trinity River, or enjoy swimming and tubing instead.
