The Essential Dallas-Fort Worth Where magazine celebrates 80 years of travel this year, and we’re commemorating it with 80-minute itineraries to DFW's most-loved locales. In this issue, we’re highlighting Fair Park, home to much more than the annual State Fair and Cotton Bowl Stadium. 80 MINUTES IN: Featuring the world's largest collection of 1930s Art Deco exposition buildings and multiple iconic Texas landmarks, Fair Park encompasses a diverse range of year-round attractions, from the Children's Aquarium and African-American Museum to the Texas Discovery Gardens and historical Hall of State building (pictured), completed in 1936 in honor of Texas' centennial anniversary. For theater enthusiasts, visit the Music Hall at Fair Park,
Fair Park where 'Wicked,' 'Ragtime' and Woody Allen's 'Bullets Over Broadway' take the stage in May and June. Live music fans can enjoy the sounds of summer at Gexa Energy Pavilion, an outdoor venue that plays host to acts including Hall & Oates (May 13), Dave Matthews Band (May 14) and The Avett Brothers (June 18). Get to all the fun in Fair Park with a short drive from downtown or a quick DART ride from almost anywhere in the Metroplex. www.fairpark.org

he roots of golf run deep in Dallas-Fort Worth. With scenic landscapes, consistent weather conditions and panoramic views of the Texas sunset, this thriving climate for year-round play has given rise to some of the game’s greats, from Dallas’ Jordan Spieth to legendary golfers (and native North Texans) Byron Nelson and Ben Hogan. It’s no surprise then, that it’s the only metro area that hosts two tournaments on the PGA Tour: The AT&T Byron Nelson (May 16-22), which is played at Irving’s TPC Four Seasons Resort and Club Dallas and hosted by the Salesmanship Club of Dallas; and the Dean & DeLuca Invitational (May 23-29), which has been played at the same course—the Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth—since its inception 70 years ago. The Byron was renamed in 1968 after the tournament’s first winner in 1944. Since then, it’s become one of DFW’s most anticipated social events and the tour’s most successful fundraiser, raising more than $143 million. The Colonial has gained notoriety over the years not only for its history and longevity, but “players feel it’s an all-around test of a good “They’ve got a golfer,” says Dennis lot of character Roberson, Colonial and originality,” tournament manager Frazar says of the for the last 35 years. Oak Cliff courses. “It’s about hitting all “Sometimes my the shots, controlling son and I will go your ball, putting well down there and ... it’s not just about play to remember how far you can hit what the game is [the ball].” all about.” Both tournament courses are technically private (although Byron attendees can get a tee time at the membersonly Cottonwood Valley course nearby with a Four Seasons “Tournament Package”), there are ample public courses in DFW for golfers of all levels to enjoy. Dallas-based course consultant and former PGA player Harrison Frazar recommends municipal courses like Stevens Park and Cedar Crest, which hosted the 1927 PGA Championship. The story goes that golfer Walter Hagen was near elimination when a young spectator, 15-year-old Byron Nelson, handed him a cap to shield the sun from his eyes, allowing Hagen to take the lead and eventually win the championship. “They’ve got a lot of character and originality,” Frazar says of the Oak Cliff courses, which feature square greens reminiscent of those from the ‘20s and ‘30s. “Sometimes my son and I will go down there and play to remember what the game is all about.” Read on for some of Frazar and Roberson’s other course picks, then turn the page for their tips on making the most of your tournament experience.

Jordan Spieth (right) warms up before hosting the 2015 AT&T Byron Nelson Youth Clinic.
From the Experts: Tournament Tips First-time spectator? Keep reading and you won’t look like it. Visit wheretraveler.com/dallas for more local insights and pro tips. GET THERE EARLY At the TPC course, “go where the putting/chipping greens and driving range are,” Frazar says. “Sit there, watch someone hit balls and hear conversations with players and caddies … [to] see how they do what they do.” Attend the Colonial on Wednesday for a more relaxed atmosphere; fans can bring cameras and are more likely to get autographs as players are more accessible. STAKE YOUR CLAIM Bring blankets or fold-up chairs to claim a spot, but have someone hold down the fort or you’ll lose that real estate. Expect lots of drama and excitement near holes 1-3 at the Byron, but expect lots of people, too. With a condensed layout and few elevation changes, fans can easily walk the Colonial course with a player, but bleachers at the ninth, 13th, 16th and 18th holes allow for seated spectating.
Ones to Watch: PGA Pros Local PGA players competing in the back-to-back tournaments include J.J. Henry, Colonial member Ryan Palmer and 2015 Byron Nelson Champion Steven Bowditch and of course, 2015 Masters Champion Jordan Spieth, who tied for second with Brandt Snedeker at the Colonial last year. Ranked No. 1 in the world ahead of Spieth at No. 2 at the time of publication, Jason Day has also committed to the Byron. “All the excitement and main energy will be around Jordan, and I would definitely go watch him play,” Frazar says, who’s known Spieth for several years. “He’s one of those special guys who has the ‘it’ factor but he has a lot of poise [that] comes from deep down.” The Colonial’s 2015 and 2014 winners, Chris Kirk and Adam Scott (who is also ranked among the top 10 in the world), will also return to Fort Worth. For tickets and more information on the AT&T Byron Nelson/Four Seasons Resort and Club Dallas, visit www.attbyronnelson.org. For tickets and details about the Dean & Deluca Invitational, visit www.deananddelucainvitational.com.
PLAN YOUR ROUTE Frazar encourages fans to research players’ golf styles then “watch their mannerisms on the course, from
how they chip and putt to how they carry themselves.” Know tee times beforehand to get a head start. AT&T Byron Nelson Youth Clinic
DON’T MISS THE YOUTH CLINIC On May 17, Jordan Spieth hosts the Byron’s Youth Clinic—one of the tournament’s most beloved traditions. The Colonial’s Nike Youth Clinic on May 22 is also hosted by a PGA pro. Both events are free. FOLLOW THE ACTION “The real golf fans go next to 1618” of the TPC course, Frazar says. In Fort Worth, the No. 5 hole that runs along the Trinity River is its most famous—and one of the tour’s most challenging. Roberson also recommends the ninth, another water hole near the clubhouse.
A HOLE-IN-FUN: PGA PARTY TIME The Byron’s Pavilion—more specifically, the “Pavilion After Dark”—is as much a destination as the tournament itself, as DJs and bands keep the party going long after the last round. The Colonial’s free evening concert series at Frost Park May 26-28 begins after tournament play. Just don’t miss the action at the 13th—”our wild and crazy hole of excitement,” Roberson says. Surrounded by concessions, vendors and an amphitheater of bleachers and skyboxes, the par-3 over water is a homebase for many fans. The Colonial’s “Famous 13th Hole”

Sure, DFW is full of action and entertainment, but let’s face it: Sometimes you need to get out of the city and explore. A few hours’ drive from the Metroplex, there are plenty of places to do just that, from historic small towns to scenic state parks. All you need to enjoy them is a tank of gas and a sense of adventure.
Mammoth Site, which became a national monument in 2015. The site comprises the remains of 24 Columbian mammoths—the largest mammals in the world at the time, standing roughly 14 feet tall and weighing up to 20,000 pounds. The well-preserved site remains the only recorded discovery of a nursery herd of Pleistocene mammoths, which lived from about 2.5 million years ago until around 10,000 years ago. During the excavation, scientists also uncovered fossilized remains of a camel (Camelops hesternus) and the tooth of a young sabertoothed cat. For history and museum junkies, the Mayborn Museum Complex is also a must-visit. Housing a 28-foot model of a Pliosaur and an in-depth look at Texas’ history and heritage, exhibits include an old settlers’ village, a log cabin and a Comanche tipi. Of course, don’t miss the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame and Museum, the Dr Pepper Museum and the Texas Sports Hall of Fame.
BSR Cable Park
WACO About halfway between Dallas and Austin on I-35 is Waco, where folks from all over Texas are flocking to its refurbished downtown area for unique experiences in dining, shipping and entertainment. Magnolia Market at the Silos, an old Cottonseed Mill on Webster Avenue, is partially responsible for Waco’s growing popularity, thanks to Chip and Joanna Gaines of the hit HGTV show ‘Fixer Upper.’
Magnolia Market
Upon arrival at the Silos, shop the Gaines’ rustic-yet-refined home décor store, games on the lawn, a garden with a wooden teepee for children and food trucks serving up a range of items, from crêpes to pizza to gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches. The newest addition to the Silos is Magnolia Flour, a bakery slated to open in May. Not far from the Silos is BSR Cable Park, previously voted “best cable park in the world.” With a six-tower cable system of custom rails, sliders, boxes and other obstacles, BSR’s bi-level lake will satisfy even the most serious wake shredders. GRANBURY Take US-377 80 miles west of Dallas to Granbury, home of the first town square in Texas to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Here, visitors will find boutiques, restaurants and tasting rooms, and charming bed-and-breakfasts. Built in 1886 and rumored to be haunted, the Granbury Opera House features imported chandeliers, twin curved staircases, its original limestone walls and balcony railings for a genuine, nostalgic and historic feel. Renovated in 2013, it plays

host to a regular schedule of performances and productions. Visit local Barking Rocks Winery around the corner from downtown for a flavor of Texas grapes, or regional favorite Revolver Brewing for craft beer (locals love the Blood & Honey ale) and a brewery tour, plus live weekend entertainment. MINERAL WELLS For an off-the-beaten-path adventure, head to Mineral Wells, about 90 minutes northwest of Dallas. Legend has it that magic healing properties exist in the water of the small town’s natural springs. Enjoy the beauty of the state park or take home your own bottle of “Crazy Water,” just like folks did in the late 1800s. At the Crazy Water Bath House, indulge in a 20-minute soak in the magic water or a reasonably priced spa treatment. A popular resort town in the early 1900s for affluent travelers seeking the healing magic of Mineral Wells would reserve their accommodations at the now-defunct Baker Hotel. Now undergoing full renovations with no reopening date in sight, the 14-story, Art Deco-style hotel is known for its ghost stories, which have become as legendary as the magic water for which the town was named.

[WHERE INSIDE]
Dallas/Fort Worth Your Way
Art Lovers
Cocktail Enthusiasts
History Buffs
At the Nasher Sculpture Center, visitors will find a picturesque sculptural garden featuring works by Pablo Picasso, Willem de Koonig, Joan Miró and more. Inside, exhibitions highlight today’s top contemporary artists, including Joel Shapiro (1), whose latest suspended sculptures are on view starting May 7. Visit The Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth for “Frank Stella: A Retrospective” (2), which runs through September and offers a comprehensive look at the prolific artist’s range and impact. For more Shapiro and Stella, plus Warhol, Chagall, Kandinsky and more, head to NorthPark Center, which recently added to its courtyard Leo Villareal’s ‘Buckyball' (3). Known for his ‘Bay Lights’ sculpture in San Francisco, Villareal’s LED installation at NorthPark is most visually astounding at night.
Cool off with a Sangria Pop cocktail from Del Frisco's Grille (1) in Fort Worth's Sundance Square or Dallas' ever-trendy Uptown neighborhood for a grown-up take on the quintessential summer snack. A new addition to the Dallas Design District, Quill Lounge (2)—a luxe cocktail concept from celebrity chef John Tesar—offers a sleek space and a touch of class with craft beverages to boot (such as the 'El Tintero,'pictured). Finally, get your margarita fix and then some at the 6th Annual Margarita Meltdown (3) on May 29 in Dallas' West End, where 40 establishments compete for the title as voted on by attendees. Can't make the event? Visit participating restaurants like Yucatan Taco Stand, Meso Maya, La Margarita in Irving, TBD Kitchen and Pie 314 in Lewisville, Resto Gastro Bistro and more.
For aviation and military history enthusiasts, don't miss the Cavanaugh Flight Museum's Warbirds Over Addison (1), May 20-22. Watch the museum’s collection of WWII-, Korean War- and Vietnam-era planes take flight, book a trip in a P-40 Warhawk or P-51 Mustang (among other models) and more. For another trip down memory lane, visit Dallas Heritage Village (2), a replicated mid-19th century Dallas community. Meander into the historic homes and buildings while reimagining life as a North Texas pioneer. In Fort Worth, history is everywhere: Take a self-guided tour along the Texas Trail of Fame (3) in the Stockyards, or look for the Historical Trail Markers in downtown to see where Butch Cassidy, the Sundance Kid and other Western legends and cowboys hung out in their heyday.
