SIGNS OF THE TIME
“Signs of the Time” is a Gold Coast exclusive exhibition of worldrenowned, national and local urban artists from the Collection of Ken McGregor and commissioned by Gold Coast City Gallery. The exhibition will feature works from urban art megastars including; Banksy’s “Nola (White Rain)”; Bambi, Britain’s best-known female street artist, and her iconic Amy Winehouse portrait “Amy Jade”; the godfather of stencil art Blek Le Rat’s statement self-portrait “The Man Who Walks Through Walls”, Iranian street artist A1One’s anti corporation work “East Resist” and Swoon’s social struggle artwork “Street Sweeper”. The project will extend beyond the gallery walls with a range of events across the Cultural Precinct and around the city including art, dance and skate workshops, live demonstrations, art battles, live music and a wrap up street party. The 2017 Sand Safari Arts Festival The 2017 Sand Safari Arts Festival takes centre stage on the sands and streets of Surfers Paradise for this annual celebration of sand and sea-inspired art. The popular free event features the Australian Sand Sculpting Championships, drawing thousands of spectators to admire the country’s most talented sculptors, as they intricately carve life-sized masterpieces inspired by the theme ‘Mermaids and Mythical Creatures’. The Sand Trail, sees the art of sand sculpting extend beyond Surfers Paradise as more than 20 works of art pop-up in hotel lobbies, libraries and shopping centres from Tweed Heads to Loganholme. Expect the unexpected and prepare to be wowed as the UK’s renowned “inflatablist” Luke Egan (aka Filthy Luker) returns to exhibit his bold, playful and clever inflatable art interventions throughout Surfers Paradise. Na Ying Chinese vocalist Na Ying is considered one of the best present-day female singers in Mainland China, having sold more than 10 million albums. Na Ying brings her World Tour to Jupiters Theatre on the Gold Coast for one night only, the perfect way to celebrate the Lunar New Year. Na won several national singing contests in the 1980s, and received vocal training from the famous composer Gu Jianfen. She released her 1st album in 1994 in Taiwan and Hong Kong called “Dreaming With You”. FIESTA DE LA MUSICA FREE CONCERT Fiesta de la Musica returns in 2017 to delight Gold Coast music lovers after successfully building audiences over the past three seasons. Celebrating the best of classical music from around the world, Fiesta de la Musica is a series of free lunchtime performances on the first Thursday of every month. Comedy in The Basement There’s laughs galore this month at The Basement at The Arts Centre Gold Coast. On 3 February catch Los Angeles Comedy Awards™ Comedian of the Year, Al Del Bene; on 10 February Australian comedian Daniel Townes will wow audiences with his laconic and disarming delivery. On 17 February, the bold and brassy Bev Killick will perform, while on 24 February Sean Woodland tells comical truths drawing on a barrage of observational funnies that are befitting of his irreverent and curious persona. UnSeenGC Summer 16-17 Making the most of the exceptional public spaces in the Gold Coast Cultural Precinct, Gold Coast City Gallery presents a series of digital artworks in “UnSeenGC Summer 16-17”. The exhibition is a mobile 3D augmented reality (AR) art experience and features artworks by five prominent national digital artists: Andrew Burrell, Josh Harle, Tracey M Benson, Pamela Lee Brenner and Johannes Muljana. Invisible to the naked eye, virtual objects, images, and video are discovered by looking through a smartphone or tablet. Utilising the technologies of image recognition, artworks appear on screen as visitors move around the Cultural Precinct, pointing their cameras at an assortment of images and signs throughout the environment, augmenting the physical environment with the virtual digital artwork. JUST NORTH of the busy throng of Surfers Paradise, you’ll find Main Beach—a relaxed mix of cafés, restaurants, bars, resort shopping and a choice of calm or surf beaches. It’s also home to Marina Mirage and Mariners Cove Marina—the jumping off points for all manner of water-based tours.
THINGS TO DO Main Beach beaches are a lot less crowded than Surfers Paradise’s iconic stretches of sand. For calm protected beach swimming head for the inside beaches of The Spit—a permanent sand spit that separates the mainland and Southport Broadwater from the Pacific Ocean. On the other side of The Spit are lifesaver patrolled surf beaches with flagged swimming areas—the Seaway Beach (patrolled November to April), Sea World Beach (patrolled on weekends and school holidays) and Sheraton Beach and Main Beach (both patrolled all year round). You can walk, run or ride along the Gold Coast Oceanway, a 36-kilometre network of coastal pathways stretching from the Gold Coast Seaway (The Spit) to the Point Danger Lighthouse (Coolangatta). Enjoy a family day at Sea World— one of Main Beach’s top attractions.
It’s the perfect day out with dolphin and seal shows as well as the chance to see sharks, stingrays, penguins and polar bears. The Storm Rollercoaster, an interactive dinosaur display and an acrobatic ski show will keep everyone happy! For casual fish and chips or fresh caught local prawns and crabs, head to Peters’ Fish Market. Outside tables overlook the fishing fleet or find a spot across the road on Main Beach. HOME TO SOME OF the Gold Coast’s most famous surfing spots, relaxed Coolangatta is lined with white sand beaches flanked by tall Norfolk pines. It was named after the schooner Coolangatta, wrecked there in 1846, and is the most southern suburb of City of Gold Coast sharing the border with New South Wales. For some of the Gold Coast’s best surfing conditions, head to Kirra Beach, Snapper Rocks or Rainbow Bay, but you might also want to try throwing in a line to catch snapper, bream or tailor. There’s also plenty of whale watching opportunities from the heights of Point Danger. All that sand activity will work up an appetite. You won’t have to leave the water views to enjoy a feed if you claim a spot on the huge beachfront balcony of the Coolangatta Surf Club. It’s a great spot for whale and dolphin watching and also perfect for a weekend breakfast. The restaurant features local produce with a range of steaks, seafood and

Inland from the towering skyscrapers and world-famous surfing beaches is a tranquil wonderland of rainforests, waterfalls and charming small villages. By Danielle Lancaster. WELCOME TO TAMBORINE Mountain, home to Queensland’s oldest national park and the third oldest in the world. In less than an hour from the Gold Coast’s surf and sand you can be in the midst of one of the area’s hinterland gems. Tamborine Mountain, rising over 600 metres, is the first hill behind the Gold Coast, giving it the ‘Green behind the Gold’ status. This is the most northern section of the great volcanic caldera of Mt Warning and forms part of ‘Australia’s Green Cauldron’, an Australian National Landscape of Significance. Tamborine Mountain National Park consists of different sections. The Witches Falls Section, with its grassy picnic areas surrounded by a natural greenhouse, was the first section declared in 1908. Since then 13 sections have been added. There’s Joalah,
Cedar Creek, The Knoll, Palm Gove and MacDonald to name a few. For a wheel chair/pram friendly walk consider Esme Street Environmental Park—a community rainforest maintained area. The short Curtis Falls walk in the Joalah Section of the national park is easy and if you can only fit in one walk, choose this one. At Hang Gliders Lookout the panorama spans across the Border Ranges, valleys and to neighbouring mountains such as Lamington. If the wind is right, keen hang gliders will be preparing and running off the grassy ledge for their descent on the thermals into the Scenic Rim below. If you’re brave you too can soar like a bird doing a tandem jump with South East Queensland Hang Gliding. It’s also the perfect location to watch the sunset. The Gold Coast’s hinterland is recognised as one of the most biodiverse regions in Australia. Its subtropical

CHEF CONCIERGE, SOFITEL GOLD COAST BROADBEACH THIS MONTH I WOULD like to take the opportunity to introduce our esteemed colleague Christian Espino. Christian is planning his trip to Berlin to attend the International Congress of Les Clefs d’Or, and we wish him well as he represents us here on the Gold Coast.
“An artist by trade, I stumbled upon hospitality 23 years ago when I arrived in Australia and have never looked back since. I started in Housekeeping at the Grand Hyatt Melbourne then moved on to Front Office, Bell Desk then Concierge where I affirmed where my passion lies, making memorable moments for our guests,” Christian said. “The Concierge profession is never boring and, in fact, is quite completely the opposite as not a day is the same with a multitude of simple to outrageous questions and requests which we all deal with with a smile. This is the reason why I have stayed in the industry till today, never a dull moment.” “And little did I know that working as a concierge would require me to be a psychologist, marriage counsellor, personal shopper, babysitter, a security officer and a genie, all rolled into one.”

In 2009, I was privileged to be a part of the pre-opening and opening team of Grand Hyatt Macau where I gained a vast knowledge and experience working and leading a team in a different environment with cultural divergence.” “A year after, in 2010, I was invited to join the newly reopened and rebranded Mira Hong Kong wherein I pioneered the creation of a new service culture, delivering brand promise and the establishment of operating standards to help drive the hotel towards ultimately being named the only Design Hotel in Hong Kong.” “Currently at the InterContinental Sanctuary Cove Resort, I embark on another journey and this time under completely different working dynamics, set against a backdrop of picturesque fountains, lush gardens, a marina, golf course and a spectacular one-acre beach lagoon pool— this is bliss.” “As Confucius said, “Choose a job you love and you will never have to work a day in your life” and that I am glad I did.”
