MAIN BEACH BY JANE HODGES

JUST NORTH of the busy throng of Surfers Paradise, you’ll find Main Beach—a relaxed mix of cafés, restaurants, bars, resort shopping and a choice of calm or surf beaches. It’s also home to Marina Mirage and Mariners Cove Marina—the jumping off points for all manner of water-based tours.

THINGS TO DO Main Beach beaches are a lot less crowded than Surfers Paradise’s iconic stretches of sand. For calm protected beach swimming head for the inside beaches of The Spit—a permanent sand spit that separates the mainland and Southport Broadwater from the Pacific Ocean. On the other side of The Spit are lifesaver patrolled surf beaches with flagged swimming areas—the Seaway Beach (patrolled November to April), Sea World Beach (patrolled on weekends and school holidays) and Sheraton Beach and Main Beach (both patrolled all year round). You can walk, run or ride along the Gold Coast Oceanway, a 36-kilometre network of coastal pathways stretching from the Gold Coast Seaway (The Spit) to the Point Danger Lighthouse (Coolangatta). Enjoy a family day at Sea World— one of Main Beach’s top attractions. It’s

the perfect day out with dolphin and seal shows as well as the chance to see sharks, stingrays, penguins and polar bears. The Storm Rollercoaster, an interactive dinosaur display and an acrobatic ski show will keep everyone happy! There’s so much to do on the water— go whale watching (humpbacks cruise past from June to October) with Gold Coast Whale Adventures; do a fourwheel-drive buggy and Segway tour of South Stradbroke Island; sail, jet ski, jet board or stand-up paddleboard on the Broadwater, take a thrill ride with Paradise Jetboating or see it all from the skies with a helicopter ride over the highrise skyline, the coast and islands with Gold Coast Helitours—all leave from Mariners Cove Marina. You can even learn to surf at The Spit with Get Wet Surf School. WHERE TO EAT You can mix it with the locals and experience some of the coast’s best bars and dining on Tedder Avenue. When your watch says cocktail o’clock, start with a Jalapeno Margarita or a local Burleigh Brewing Co beer at Bar Chico.Settle in for some share plates from chef Darren Baranello’s Mediterranean, Asian and

10 WHERE GOLD COAST I JANUARY 2017 I wheretraveler.com

Middle Eastern-inspired menu, or wander down the Avenue to Shuck for some serious people watching and some of the Coast’s freshest seafood—the sand crab lasagne is sensational! For wonderful water views, join the locals for a sunset drink at Southport Yacht Club. Get a table overlooking the moored yachts and as the sun fades you’ll see the lights of the Gold Coast twinkling over the water. The meals are great too! For casual fish and chips or fresh caught local prawns and crabs, head to Peters’ Fish Market. Outside tables overlook the fishing fleet or find a spot across the road on Main Beach. Right next door is Palazzo Versace Hotel—offering high tea at Le Jardin, casual waterfront dining at Vie Bar & Restaurant or a gastronomic adventure to remember at Vanitas. Glass Dining & Lounge Bar is known for its succulent steaks; Omeros Bros for supreme seafood in stylish surrounds; and Ristorante Fellini for the finest Italian fare. The best bets for breakfast are Providore Marina Mirage or local favourite Lark Café and Grocer on Main Beach Parade. WHERE TO SHOP High-end centre Marina Mirage offers more than 80 speciality stores (fashion, art and design, homewares and even a pooch boutique). Visit Mariora for unique jewellery featuring Australian Opals. For designer shoes, bags and accessories you can’t go past Maryon’s on Tedder Avenue. They stock international designer labels including Céline, Emilio Pucci, Givenchy, Kenzo, Marc by Marc Jacobs, Marni, Nicholas Kirkwood and Sonia Rykiel. GETTING AROUND Travel around the area via the G:link, the Gold Coast’s easy to use light rail network. DISCOVER THE GOLD COAST’S NEWEST BEACHSIDE ‘HOODS. MIAMI, MERMAID, AND NOBBY’S are adding lifestyle cred to previously overlooked patches of the Gold Coast. Read on to discover where to find the best dining, shopping and holiday fun at the coast’s newest hipster ‘hoods.

MIAMI One of the best spots to soak up this suburb’s hip new vibe is Miami Marketta, a live music venue, creative hub and outdoor dining venue. Delicious sweet pies from The Whoopie Lady and pillowy gua bao packed with tempura crab and Asian slaw from Lucky Bao, shared tables, funky bars and talented local artists make Miami Marketta the place to be. The street food market comes alive on Friday and Saturday nights but you can also drop in during the week for handmade leather bags and accessories at LaKoa, chic homewares at Reinvented Treasures and vintage inspired fashions at Love Street.

If you’re after something for breakfast or lunch, head to Paddock Bakery, an 80-year-old cottage that has been converted into a bakery-cum-cafe. On Sunday mornings you can stock up on nature’s bounty at the Gold Coast Organic Farmers Market which sells nothing but the freshest, guaranteed Certified Organically grown seasonal fruit and veggies. big hit with families but at night hip twenty-somethings play until 10pm. Alfred’s Apartment, an eclectic 60s-inspired store featuring a boutique, diner and an old-style barber shop, offers a delicious taste of the past. Around the corner another retroinspired cafe, Vintage Espresso, serves up wholesome breakfasts such as French toast served with berry compote, coconut yoghurt and toasted almonds. One of the newest spots at Mermaid Beach is Etsu, an ‘izakaya’ that serves drinks and food (think of it as a Japanese pub). Funky pop culture references abound, the music is pumping and the shared plates of gyoza, sashimi and tempura will have you coming back for more. If you are craving some serenity after all that fun, you can find your chi at the Australian School of Meditation and Yoga which runs numerous classes throughout the week. NOBBY’S BEACH You will find everyone from hipsters to health nuts and families at Nobby’s Beach, a trendy café and dining precinct with a laid-back vibe. Start your day at BSKT Cafe, one of the Gold Coast’s most picturesque beachside cafés, which

strives to make the world a healthier place with nutritious and delicious food. Don’t miss the Taylor Swift smoothie made with Himalayan salted caramel protein, coconut ice-cream and caramelised coconut syrup. You can always work it off on the walking track that leads to the picturesque North Burleigh Hill lookout. One of the restaurants that started the Nobby’s food revolution was Hellenika. It used to be a secret spot favoured by locals-in-the-know until the restaurant scored a tasty review in The Australian. While getting a table is more challenging these days, those who persevere are rewarded with authentic home-style Greek cuisine with a modern twist. Think tangy taramosalata, chargrilled octopus and house-made halva ice-cream for dessert. Quench your thirst at Bine Bar & Dining where you can top off your weekend with 50c wings and craft beers between 4pm and 6pm. For something more stylish, there is The Cambus Wallace, a cocktail bar and live music venue. Named after the ill-fated Cambuswallace, a wooden sailing ship which sank in sight of port in the late 1800s, this moody cocktail bar provides a safe haven for rum and whisky lovers on stormy nights (or any other night for that matter).

The Coolest End of the Gold Coast HOME TO SOME OF the Gold Coast’s most famous surfing spots, relaxed Coolangatta is lined with white sand beaches flanked by tall Norfolk pines. It was named after the schooner Coolangatta, wrecked there in 1846, and is the most southern suburb of City of Gold Coast sharing the border with New South Wales. For some of the Gold Coast’s best surfing conditions, head to Kirra Beach,

Snapper Rocks or Rainbow Bay, but you might also want to try throwing in a line to catch snapper, bream or tailor. There’s also plenty of whale watching opportunities from the heights of Point Danger. All that sand activity will work up an appetite. You won’t have to leave the water views to enjoy a feed if you claim a spot on the huge beachfront balcony of the Coolangatta Surf Club. It’s a great spot for whale and dolphin watching and

EXPLORE THE HINTERLAND

WELCOME TO TAMBORINE Mountain, home to Queensland’s oldest national park and the third oldest in the world. In less than an hour from the Gold Coast’s surf and sand you can be in the midst of one of the area’s hinterland gems. Tamborine Mountain, rising over 600 metres, is the first hill behind the Gold Coast, giving it the ‘Green behind the Gold’ status. This is the most northern section of the great volcanic caldera of Mt Warning and forms part of ‘Australia’s Green Cauldron’, an Australian National Landscape of Significance. Tamborine Mountain National Park consists of different sections. The Witches Falls Section, with its grassy picnic areas surrounded by a natural greenhouse, was the first section declared in 1908. Since then 13 sections have been added. There’s Joalah, Cedar Creek, The Knoll, Palm Gove and MacDonald to name a few. For a wheel chair/pram friendly walk consider Esme Street Environmental Park—a community rainforest maintained area. The short Curtis Falls walk in the Joalah Section of the national park is easy and if you can only fit in one walk, choose this one. At Hang Gliders Lookout the panorama spans across the Border Ranges, valleys and to neighbouring mountains such as Lamington. If the wind is right, keen hang gliders will be preparing and running off the grassy ledge for their descent on the thermals into the Scenic Rim below. If you’re brave you too can soar like a bird doing a tandem jump with South East Queensland Hang Gliding. It’s also the perfect location to watch the sunset. The Gold Coast’s hinterland is recognised as one of the most biodiverse regions in Australia. Its subtropical rainforests harbour a huge number of rare and endangered animals and plants. Over 170 species of birds have been recorded, and numerous frogs, insects, reptiles and intriguing fungi can be seen by those with an eager eye. Today’s visitors can experience not only natural but also man-made treasures. There are award-winning restaurants, artisan’s studios, shopping for antiques and knick-knacks at quaint outlets and quirky mountain markets. Plus roadside stalls, wineries, distilleries and local

Jasmin Organics, at the top of Tamborine Mountain, combines nature and science in an organic skincare and beauty range. Stop by their beauty shop to sample their award winning products. Knowledgeable staff are on hand to help you discover how to achieve radiant, healthy and younger looking skin. Stop by Antiques Plus in Eagle Heights for treasures from the past. With quality, unique pieces, you’ll feel like you are stepping back in time when you visit their store. Attractions worth adding to your list include Tamborine Mountain Distillery and Thunder Bird Park where you can dig for thunder eggs. Tamborine Rainforest Skywalk is a unique eco-adventure which has elevated walkways in the beautiful rainforest canopies. It is set in a magical 30 acres of privately owned rainforest and the walk takes approximately 45 minutes at a leisurely pace. The entire walk totals 1.5 kilometres and is a combination of forest floor trails, 300 metres of high-tech steel bridges and a 40-metre cantilever bridge that soars a breathtaking 30 metres above the creek and rainforest below.

Another popular thing to do is to see glowworms. Do a tour at night into the National Park to see them in their natural habitat or visit the man-made Glow Worm Caves at Cedar Creek Estate where you can see the nocturnal glowworms during the day in realistic underground chambers. All of this adventure does work up an appetite, and Songbirds is an excellent place for lunch. This multi-award winning restaurant is set in a private rainforested retreat and has accommodation available. It is very popular so it’s best to book ahead. For something less formal, The Botanic Garden is perfect for a picnic and is popular for all ages. The garden has a rainforest walk, Japanese Garden, Orchid House and quaint stone bridge over the lake. Foodies who want to cook their own will not be disappointed. There are numerous road stalls selling organically grown produce dotted around the mountain and many fine dining options boasting award-winning chefs. The Green Shed, where the locals take their excess produce for sale, is open Sundays from 7am at the showgrounds. Whether you come for a day trip or stay for a few days, Tamborine Mountain, shrouded in its rainforest blanket, will win over your heart.

LES CLEFS D’OR

LES CLEFS D’OR INTERNATIONAL

By Shane Edwards

President: COLIN TOOMEY,

CHEF CONCIERGE, SOFITEL GOLD COAST BROADBEACH

The Shangri-La Hotel, Sydney General Secretary: JAMES RIDENOUR, InterContinental Melbourne The Rialto

WELCOME TO THE Gold Coast. On

behalf of Derek Fenn, Marriott Surfers Paradise Resort and Christian Espino, InterContinental Sanctuary Cove and myself we look forward to helping you enjoy our patch of paradise. Les Clefs d’Or is a worldwide society of professional concierge. Founded in Paris, France in the early 1950s, we are a unique society of like-minded individuals striving to deliver service to the traveller. The parameters of legal and moral are the guidelines we work under, so the scope of which we are able to deliver is left up to your imagination. The Gold Coast is full of wonderful restaurants, cafés and bars as well as being known as Australia’s theme park capital. The Hinterland offers visitors a number of nature experiences and exposure to natural beauty or, as we like to call it, the ‘Green Behind the Gold’.

Sun, sand and surf are three words that pretty much sum us up! We are not called the Gold Coast and Surfers Paradise for nothing. Our beaches are some of the best in the world; constant warm temperatures all year round make us the envy of the southern states. Remember to swim between the flags, as the motto goes ‘if we can’t see you we can’t save you.’ It is an exciting time on the Coast with all the construction of new facilities for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games as well as Jupiters Casino, Pacific Fair Shopping Centre and our new light rail, which all play a part in making the Gold Coast one of the most liveable cities in Australia. Relax, take a deep breath and enjoy. Keep an eye out for our golden crossed keys and make sure you introduce yourself.
